The difference between the Lada Vesta X Ray. "Vesta" or "X-Ray" - which is better? Car comparison, characteristics, owner reviews

Relatively recently, AvtoVAZ released two models, which were called X-Ray and Lada Vesta. Despite the fact that their names are completely different, the difference in appearance and internal equipment is not that big, so the cars can be classified as one line. And yet they are slightly different, so in order to understand which is better, Khrey or Lada Vesta, we will conduct a detailed review of these two cars.

If you choose by size what is optimal for you - Lada Vesta or Lada X Rey, then the situation here turns out to be diverse. Where Vesta is ahead of its rival in some indicators, it loses in others. Let's compare the sizes of Lada Vesta and X Rey:

  • The length of the first model is 4410 mm, while the second is 4165 mm.
  • Lada Vesta, compared to X-Ray, differs in several parameters, but not in width - the size of both is 1764 mm.
  • The height of the Lada Xray, compared to the Vesta, is greater - for the first model it is 1570 mm, and for the second it is 1497 mm.
  • If we compare the Lada Vesta or Lada X-Ray in relation to the wheelbase, then the longer sedan has it 2635 mm, while the hatchback has 2592 mm.
  • Also worth mentioning is the ground clearance. For the Lada West it is 178 mm, which, compared to the X-Ray, is 17 mm less.

By the way, even the weight of both cars is close to each other. Vesta is only 20 kg heavier than its brother - 1670 versus 1650. It turns out that the sedan is longer and lower, while the hatchback is taller but more compact.

As mentioned above, both cars have a lot in common. They are made in the general style of the plant. Both have almost the same front. Externally, the hood is similar for both models, the optics look equally stylish, and both one and the other model have round fog lights. And even the crossed lines representing the “x” sign are similar in both.

If you do not pay attention to the differences in the bodies, then the VAZ stampings on the wings and doors are visible to the naked eye. Of course, such a design looks very impressive, but because of this the car visually loses in length, which is especially noticeable in the case of a hatchback.

But many people have complaints about the wheels. This is especially true for their size. Considering that the basic configuration has fifteen-inch wheels, and the top ones have sixteen-inch wheels, then even such wheels seem small. That's why many people change them to seventeen-inch ones.

Separately, we should talk about the body differences and differences between the Lada Vesta and Lada X-Ray. Of course, there is no talk of prestige here, since both models are produced by the same manufacturer. And the buyers themselves cannot yet decide for themselves which car has more status. But there are significant differences in bodywork between Vesta and XRay.

At the moment, Vesta is sold by the plant as a sedan, but there is already talk that the line will expand - the plant’s future plans include a station wagon, a hatchback, a Cross pseudo-road car, and even an extended version of the Signature. And this suggests that the Tolyatti plant is about to surprise with fresh new products!

As for the Xray, this model so far acts only as a hatchback, although many are trying to put it on the same level as a crossover. For now, there can be no other options here, with the possible exception of Cross, which is also about to be expected on the market. The new model, by the way, apart from the Lada Xray plastic suspension, the planned all-wheel drive and some other little things, will not differ in anything new.

In the end, as for the body, when choosing a Lada Vesta or X Rey, everything depends only on your personal preferences. But, of course, if you choose a hatchback, you can wait for its prototype in the future. But with a sedan, unfortunately, there is no alternative yet - just wait for the carriage.

Comparison of technical characteristics

So, let's look at the technical equipment in more detail and decide who to bet on - the Lada Vesta or the X-Ray.

As unfortunate as it may be, the hatchback wins here completely. After all, it can offer its buyer several engines at once, while Vesta has only one.

Both models have in common a 106-horsepower engine from the VAZ-21129 series. This is a unit that has long been time-tested, with sixteen valves, four cylinders, and a distributed fuel injection complex. Of course, its power is not huge, but for a small hatchback and class B sedan it is perfect.

However, if Vesta has exhausted its options, then X Ray is also ready to offer a couple more current units. And this is a 110-horsepower engine, having the same volume of 1.6 liters, but at the same time developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance. For many, this option will be slightly preferable, since the unit is more economical, more dynamic, and the cutoff is located a little higher.

However, the top ones included not an imported engine at all, but, again, a domestic one. And this is a 1.8-liter engine from the VAZ-21179 serial line. It doesn’t have any special design, but this model has 122 hp. With. and 6000 rpm. Of course, such a motor makes it possible for greater agility, which, however, is concealed by a five-speed robot that is paired with the unit.

So, as you can see, when comparing X Ray and Lada Vesta, in this case the first model wins.

Transmissions

If we talk about the equipment of the Lada Vesta and XRay regarding gearboxes, then the situation here is approximately identical. Both cars have a manual transmission and robotic AMT. Both here and there they are five-speed. The only difference is that the sedan has a domestic gearbox, while the hatchback has a French one.

But there is no fundamental difference here. The units here work clearly, and the levers have fairly short strokes.

Even though many are trying to position X Rey as a crossover, there is no basis here. A simply tall hatchback does not have an all-wheel drive system, even in the optional list. Actually, like Vesta, which is also front-wheel drive.

But in terms of chassis design, they are completely identical. This is a spring, independent front suspension with a stabilizer and MacPherson struts.

Interior

If you compare the interior of the Lada Vesta and X Rey, then everything here is not for everybody. Inside, both cars look cocky and impressive, and, as for kinship, here it catches the eye. There are equally comfortable seats, an almost identical steering wheel, and wells in the dashboard.

True, thanks to the length of the sedan, it is more comfortable to sit in the rear seats. But it may be uncomfortable for tall passengers. But the Hatchback wins in terms of its height and compactness.

Options and prices

Despite the fact that both cars have the same equipment, X Ray is more expensive than Vesta. The first has a starting price of 589 thousand rubles, while the second has a starting price of 529.

There are more configurations of the Lada Vesta. She has seven of them, while Ray has only four. This suggests that the buyer has more chances to choose what he likes most from the sedan.

Conclusion

As you can see, the cars have many similarities, although there are also fundamental differences. Basically, they relate to engine equipment and trim levels.

Otherwise, the cars are very close to each other, including in terms of interior and exterior.

In recent years, the main Russian automaker has been seriously working on improving its cars. Such zeal is completely justified, because Avtovaz cars have not been able to compete with foreign cars for at least 10 years and gain recognition among the broad masses.

Attracting foreign specialists, improving production technologies, using innovative materials and much more helped the automaker “give birth” to the last two new products, which are quite competitive with foreign cars. We are, of course, talking about the Lada X-Ray and Vesta. Having become competitors to foreign analogues in the domestic market, they also began to compete with each other. Lada X-Ray is a compact crossover, also known as an elevated B-class hatchback, which is an excellent means of transportation both over rough terrain and in the city rhythm, without being devoid of style. Lada Vesta is a sedan or station wagon, a more mobile car, also not devoid of a pleasant exterior.

Attention! Both machines were created using similar technology, which allows us to draw some parallels between them and, accordingly, make comparisons.

So which is better: Vesta or X-Ray? Let's figure out for what purposes and in what circumstances one or another car is preferable.

The need for comparison and its parameters

Some may think it is irrational to compare two cars, especially from the same concern. However, in modern realities, it will be very useful for an inexperienced car enthusiast to consider this comparative review, especially if the choice is made between Lada Vesta and X-Ray. Of course, taste and needs (guided by them to choose the best vehicle for themselves) are purely subjective concepts, and it would not be true to say with one hundred percent certainty that the information presented below is only one truth. In any case, every aspect of the comparison, or rather, its conclusions, is based on a consideration of all technical characteristics, studying reviews of auto specialists, owners of these cars and an in-depth analysis of all information.

The most basic, most important to any car enthusiast, were chosen as comparison parameters. Their list is as follows:

  • technical characteristics (engine strength, gearbox, suspension, etc.);
  • dimensions;
  • speed parameters and fuel consumption;
  • pass parameters;
  • configurations, their convenience, prices;
  • comparison of exteriors (exterior design);
  • comparison of interiors (car salons).

Having summarized the basic concepts of the review, we can objectively compare the Lada Vesta and X-Ray.

Specifications

As for engines, in Lada Vesta and X-Ray they are represented by completely identical models that have the same characteristics. More precisely, these are the motors:

  • VAZ-21129 with a power of 106 horsepower;
  • HR16DE - 110 horsepower;
  • VAZ-21179 - 122 horsepower;

There are also some other engines that cars are equipped with, but these are quite rare cases. All of them are equipped with 5-speed gearboxes, either manual or automatic. However, the gearbox unit is better implemented in the Lada X-Ray, since the general construction technology, as well as equipping one of the configurations of the innovative gearbox from French engineers (JR5), is a serious and confident step forward. In addition, the crossover has improved the operation of both manual and automatic transmissions. Boxes presented on cars:

  • Lada Vesta: VAZ-2180 - 5-mortar, manual; JH3 510 - 5-speed manual; VAZ-2182 - automatic.
  • Lada X-Ray: JR5 - 5-mortar, manual; JH3 512 - 5-mortar, manual; VAZ-21826 - automatic.

As you can see, in terms of implementing the operation of the engine and gearbox, the crossover is slightly better.

The third main component in any car is the suspension. Both Ladas are front-wheel drive and their chassis design is completely identical. The suspension of Vesta and X-Ray is an independent chassis system with a spring front axle, struts, stabilizers and a torsion beam at the rear. But even here the X-ray has a slight advantage - it has greater ground clearance, which will be discussed in more detail below. Although at the same time the Vesta platform is more stable and reliable, which should not be ignored.

Regarding the operation and operation of all components in general, there were no complaints from owners and test drivers. Everything is done with high quality and works like a clock. Overall, in terms of technical characteristics, the X-Ray is slightly better and more refined. However, the Lada Vesta will also not get lost next to the crossover, since in many ways the structural structure of both cars is similar.

Dimensions and exterior

The situation is much more interesting when comparing the dimensions of Vesta and X-Ray, because in some places one car is inferior, and in others - another. So, summary characteristics:

  • Length: Vesta - 4,410 mm; X-Ray - 4,165 mm.
  • Width: 1764-1764.
  • Height: 1,497-1,570.
  • Wheelbase: 2,635-2,592.
  • Clearance: 178-195.
  • Trunk volume: 480 liters for West and 361 liters for X-Ray.
  • Weight: 1,230 (curb - 1,670) kg - 1,220 (1,650) kg.

Choosing which car is better based on size is extremely irrational. In this case, it all depends on the needs of the owner, that is, if ground clearance and height are a priority - X-Ray is better, but if you need to transport a lot of things in the trunk or length plays an important role - Vesta.

Of course, in terms of exterior it is difficult to compare anything. It all depends on individual tastes. Both cars are made in very competent and eye-catching design solutions. To be fair, it is worth noting that many car enthusiasts and car experts prefer the Lada Vesta in terms of appearance.

Speed parameters and fuel consumption

Since the design solutions (engines, gearboxes, suspension, etc.) are largely similar, the Lada X-Ray and Lada Vesta have approximately the same values for both maximum speed and acceleration to 100 km/h. Based on this, we can conclude that by purchasing a more expensive package, you will get higher speed parameters. In this aspect, the cars are equal, even despite the body structures and their aerodynamic properties. Speed characteristics:

  • Lada Vesta: maximum speed - 181 km/h; acceleration to 100 km/h - 10.9-13 seconds (depending on the included motor).
  • Lada X-Ray: maximum speed - 178 km/h; acceleration to 100 km/h - 11.1-13 seconds (depending on the included motor).

The average fuel consumption on both cars is also approximately the same; according to the manufacturer’s data, it ranges from 8.5 to 10 liters in the city, 5.5–6.5 liters on the highway and 6.8–7.6 in the combined cycle.

In general, in these parameters the cars are approximately equal, and here it is worth relying on the component motor. If you want more speed, take a 122-horsepower unit; if you want to save on fuel, take weaker engines: 106-horsepower on the X-Ray or 87-horsepower on the Vesta.

Patency

Cross-country ability is also a very ambiguous parameter, because the VAZ concern claims that both Vesta and X-Ray were created taking into account all the nuances of Russian roads. As noted earlier, the car suspensions are almost identical and have a fairly rigid structure. Taking into account the use of the rear beam, you can believe this, because this chassis element is capable of providing a fairly comfortable and smooth ride of the vehicle on uneven surfaces. Despite this, the higher ground clearance of the X-Ray (it is, after all, a raised hatchback) gives the car some advantage in cross-country ability when viewed relative to Vesta.

Various testing companies checked the cross-country ability of both cars in various conditions. The conclusion from them was clear: the ground clearance of 195 mm for the X-Ray (versus 178 mm) significantly reduces the chance of “sitting” on the bottom.

Therefore, if the driving conditions and the condition of the roads in your area are quite difficult (in winter there is a lot of snow, constant mud, etc.), it is better to give preference to the Lada X-Ray. Definitely, in terms of cross-country ability, the crossover has the best characteristics.

Vehicle configurations

It’s worth noting right away that the functionality of the TOP configurations of the Lada Vesta and Lada X-Ray is almost identical. Therefore, in any case, if you are aiming to purchase the best version of the car, the equipment will be the same. But if we consider all types of configurations of both cars, then Vesta has a clear advantage. What is it? The fact is that when choosing, you can more flexibly select the necessary options in each individual case. And Vesta has a great advantage in the number of functional variations: 7 versus 4 for X-Ray.

Vehicle configurations:

  • Lada Vesta: Classic, Comfort, Comfort-Optima, Lux, Lux-Style, Lux-Multimedia, Lux-Lime.
  • Lada X-Ray: Optima, Optima-Comfort, Top, Top-Prestige.

There are no significant differences in the configurations of both cars, that is, all basic ones have a radio, speakers, etc., and more advanced ones, for example, have air conditioning. Taking into account such a strong identity in the choice of functional features of a particular car, Lada Vesta has a significant advantage in this regard over the X-Ray, due to the possibility of a more flexible selection.

The cost of basic car configurations differs by 60-70 thousand rubles: X-Ray costs 589,000, Vesta - 529,000 rubles. Top versions of cars cost 742,000 and 672,000 respectively. Selecting a color or a more advanced functional package costs an additional 10-30,000 rubles on top of the cost of the basic equipment for each car.

Interior

Again, determining whose interior is better: the Lada Vesta or the X-Ray is a difficult task. The manufacturer confused all the cards for reviewers by making almost identical car designs from the inside. Both models in more expensive trim levels are available in leather interior, while in less expensive ones there is a lot of plastic, regular fabric, etc.

The cars are quite spacious and can carry five people without causing them any inconvenience. The only significant difference is the trunk volume: Vesta has 480 liters, while X-Ray has 361, which makes the first car more family-friendly. Although, by folding the rear seats in a crossover, you can increase the capacity to as much as 1,200 liters, this is not always possible.

Many note that it is much more difficult to find fault with Vesta’s interior than that of X-Ray. In any case, the concept of taste is extremely subjective, so we will not make general conclusions regarding the interior design of cars. One thing is for sure - the interior in both cars is, if not at the level of foreign cars, then very close to them.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is necessary to draw a conclusion: after all, which is better: Lada Vesta or X-Ray? No matter how much VAZ fans would like to hear the name of their favorite car, it is impossible to answer this question unequivocally. When choosing a particular car, everything depends on the individual preferences of each person and the purpose of using the car.

A number of things can be said with certainty:

  1. Specifications are almost identical, neither of the two cars has any advantages in this aspect. Of course, the X-Ray structure contains some parts from European and Japanese manufacturers (for example, gearboxes), but Vesta is not without this, in which part of the suspension is made with spare parts from Nissan. That's why quality and values of tech. resources are almost identical.
  2. Operational Capabilities slightly higher for X-Ray, this is especially reflected in cross-country ability. However, the fuel consumption or speed parameters of the cars are the same.
  3. Interior and exterior are a matter of taste, and focusing on this is stupid, much less making any assessments of them.
  4. In terms of configuration variations, Vesta has a clear advantage, but in basic and top ones the functionality is the same.
  5. Cost as well as design is everyone's choice. Is it worth overpaying 60-70,000 for a crossover - decide for yourself.

So, answer yourself: “Which is better for you: Vesta or XRAY?”

Many fans of the domestic automobile industry are interested in the question: which is better Lada Vesta or Lada X Ray? Both cars are currently flagships in the AvtoVAZ model range. Appearing on Russian roads in 2015, Lada Vesta and Lada X Ray won recognition and admiring reviews from their newly-made owners. Using technical data and a description of the external features of the cars, including photos, you can compare these two models.

Both models are made in the same stylish design with a pronounced letter X on many parts of the cars. The head optics and the front part of the body with the radiator grille are practically the same. Identical X-shaped stampings on the fenders and doors of cars attract the attention of others. The interior and ergonomics of the cabin have minor differences.

It is impossible to compare both of these models on the same scale. First of all, they are made in different body types, which means that a comparative analysis must be carried out taking into account this important design difference.

OptionsLada X-RayLada Vesta
Length/width/height (mm)4165/ 1764/ 1570 4410/ 1764/ 1497

Luggage compartment volume (l)361 480
Curb/maximum weight (kg)1190/1650 1230/1670

The X Ray crossover, thanks to its significant ground clearance and short wheelbase, has advantages on roads with worse surfaces and on poor off-road conditions. In terms of dynamic characteristics, it loses to the more stocky and streamlined Lada Vesta sedan, whose center of gravity is lower and stability on the highway is much better than its competitor. If you compare the Lada Vesta in city traffic on the asphalt, in terms of maneuverability it is not much different from the X Ray.

Specifications

The technical equipment of Lada Vesta and Lada Xray is similar. The power units for these models are the same: a 106-horsepower 16-valve 1.6-liter engine and a 1.8-liter engine with a capacity of 122 hp. Two gearboxes work in tandem with them: a 5-speed “robot” and a classic “mechanics”. Despite the similarity in the equipment of these machines, their speed characteristics differ slightly.

Ride and Handling

The comparison of the Lada Vesta with the Lada X Ray in terms of driving characteristics is the most interesting. The front suspension of both new products is independent, equipped with anti-roll bars. The rear wishbone semi-independent suspension with gas-filled shock absorbers is also unified for both cars. But the settings of the car's chassis are different.

The crossover in its design is designed for frequent trips to the countryside, and its suspension is tuned more rigidly to “swallow” potholes and bumps in off-road conditions. In the city of X, Ray is less comfortable due to the constant slight trembling from minor joints and defects of city roads.

The sedan is equipped with a softer suspension that copes well with minor irregularities on city roads. But its design and suspension tuning are not designed to overcome serious obstacles.

In order to independently evaluate the driving advantages and handling of these cars and decide for yourself whether to buy a Lada Vesta or an X Ray, dealership centers offer a test drive. It is better to sign up for this service in advance, indicating a convenient date and time.

Prices for new AvtoVAZ products

Prices for Lada Vesta and Lada X Ray are displayed in detail on the official website of Lada cars. The significant difference in price from the basic configuration to its maximum performance is explained by the large number of options and generous equipment of the car. How much this or that modification will cost depends on the buyer’s preferences.

Basic equipment

Lada Vesta with the most modest Classic equipment and a base engine paired with a manual transmission will cost the buyer 545,000 rubles. The list of equipment already includes all the necessary safety systems for skidding and loss of control, two airbags and some pleasant little things for comfortable driving.

The cost of the X Ray in the minimum Optima configuration with the same engine and manual transmission starts from 600 thousand rubles. The equipment of the crossover is distinguished by the presence in the “base” of an installed audio system with speakers and modern functionality. In addition, X Ray is equipped with electric power steering, unlike Vesta’s electric power steering.

Maximum configuration

Prices for the new Vesta in Moscow with a “robot” and a more powerful engine start at 650,000 rubles for the average Comfort equipment. The maximum list of Luxe/Multimedia options will cost 735 thousand.

Similar equipment for a crossover in the mid-range Luxe configuration will cost 760,000 rubles. The price of the top version Exclusive will be 830 thousand. The crossover has a more generous package, which includes:

  • interior lighting;
  • presence of an additional socket in the trunk;
  • 17" alloy wheels;
  • double luggage compartment floor;
  • folding rear seats that create a flat surface for carrying additional luggage;
  • leather trim of the gearshift knob and steering wheel;
  • the presence of an additional box under the front passenger seat;
  • original design of seats and interior Exclusive.

The presence of additional options and the advantage of a 5-door off-road explains why Khrey is more expensive than Vesta. After watching numerous videos where two models are compared directly under the conditions of their actual use, you can decide which car you should buy, taking into account individual preferences.

Conclusion

Despite the fact that these two representatives of the Tolyatti concern are assembled on the same platform and have the same units and components in their designs, they are still different. They differ in driving behavior, handling, some little details in equipment and much more. It is impossible to say unequivocally which of them is better, each is good in its own way. The final choice remains with the buyer, who will weigh the pros and cons and choose the best option for himself.

We tried to compare the two most popular domestic cars under the Lada brand: Vesta and XRay. Read on to find out what came of it.

Lada Vesta Cross or X Ray: comparison of cars

First, let's evaluate the sales level of these models. Since Vesta in the “Cross” version was launched on sale quite recently, we will take sales of regular Vesta sedans and station wagons and compare them with the X-Ray indicators. There is the following data:

  • a year after the start of production, the number of Lada Vesta station wagon cars sold reached 8,000;
  • Lada is ahead of its competitors in terms of total sales of passenger cars;
  • from January to August 2018, Vesta was the second most popular car after the Kia Rio, while the X-ray was only in 9th place. These are the total figures for the Vesta model, including the sedan and station wagon.

The statistics are already giving us pause. On the other hand, these data reflect not so much the quality of the cars sold, but the preferences of the car enthusiasts themselves and their purchasing power.

The average price for Vesta in the Cross version is about 788,900 rubles, while XRay will cost almost 100 thousand cheaper.

And if everything is clear with popularity, then from a price point of view the advantage is clearly not in favor of the Lada Vesta.

Comparison of dimensions and appearance

The cars are built on different chassis. In the case of X-Ray, this is the B0 platform, on which popular models of the Renault-Nissan concern are built. But Vesta has a completely original chassis design.

Body and dimensions

Externally, Lada Vesta and X-Ray are so similar that if it were not for the difference in height and body shape, one could confuse them even if they were placed next to each other. They have one thing in common: design at the level of modern foreign cars and the famous “X-DNA”.

Vesta Cross is a sedan, while the X-Ray is a hatchback. Vesta Cross is slightly lower and longer than the X-ray (4424 millimeters in length versus 4165 for the hatchback) and visually this gives it a more rapid appearance.

Vesta Cross station wagon (Lada Vesta SW Cross) has the same dimensions as the sedan, with the exception of height - SW Cross has become 11 mm higher.

Externally, Iksray gives the impression of a more “muscular” comrade - a small “jock” of the domestic automobile industry, taller and shorter than the elegant Vesta Cross.

Where the Vesta Cross modification definitely wins outwardly is in size ground clearance(203 millimeters versus 195 for the competitor). It's a small difference, but there are situations in which even a small advantage can be significant. Russian roads in a number of regions prove this truth every day. At the same time, do not forget that a loaded car loses 2-3 cm of ground clearance.

Lada X-Ray It stands out against the background of its competitor with a high window sill line, visually making the car somehow more powerful. “Compact high hatchback” is how it is officially called, and the Lada X-Ray fully justifies this name.

After just a couple of years of launching into the series, the Lada Xray has already completely fit into everyday reality, is selling well (see statistics at the beginning of the article) and has found constantly warring armies of fans and haters on the Internet.

The fact is that AvtoVAZ wanted to stuff a newly designed body into the base from Renault Sandero Stepway. The result was controversial.

The dimensions of the VAZ Xray are almost identical to the Sandero, including the length of the body and the size of the wheelbase. Even the head optics are very similar to those installed on the Stepan. But despite its continuity, the new Lada has become a market bestseller, although not as popular as Vesta.

The XRay body turned out to be truly original in appearance, although the Sandero is considered a more status model by the group. Partly because the basic version has only 15-inch wheels, and only higher trim levels can afford 16- or 17-inch ones.

Xray is the result of a compromise integration of a new body into a chassis that has long been mastered on the assembly line. Questions may arise here regarding the passive protection of passengers, since the car has not passed the EuroNCAP tests. But many were most disappointed by how the production hatchback looks compared to the concept.

This is the production car:

And this is the design prototype:

Agree that the car has lost most of its charm. All that remains is the notorious letter X in the front part and on the side stampings. But the result was at least a repairable design. Just ask yourself: could the manufacturing plant change assembly equipment and retrain staff in a short time? That's it...

Salon

In the interior of the Vesta Cross, the ergonomics of the front panel make a pleasant impression. A serious drawback is the inability to display speed information on the on-board computer display, since the analog instrument scales are difficult to read during the day.

But in general, the interior is put together so well that even the plastic trim does not make any squeaks. Noise insulation, as already noted by many reviewers, is better than in the XRay, and is already ahead of that of the concern's previous budget models. Even at a speed of about 130 km/h, you can carry on a conversation (although at such speeds it is better not to be distracted by chatter).

Vesta Cross salon:

Now let's take a look at the ergonomics and equipment of the Lada XRay. Like the exterior, the interior environment doesn't look as great as the 2012 prototype. Compared to Vesta Cross here:

  • no central armrest,
  • many control buttons are inconvenient (heating, for example) and you still need to reach them,
  • the required antifreeze temperature indicator is missing on the dashboard of the XRay hatchback,
  • unsatisfactory visibility through the central rearview mirror and generally from behind, since the window behind is too small.

The common problem of both cars is that the multimedia system is not very fast and the navigation is not the most advanced.

Three adult passengers can fit relatively comfortably behind the driver. “Relatively” - because the ergonomics of the rear seats are not conducive to long trips. And even in the maximum configuration, there is no longitudinal adjustment of the sofa and is not expected.

And how did it happen that the trunk of the XRAY is smaller than that of the Vesta?

Overall: alas, Xray loses to Vesta in terms of visibility and interior ergonomics. Although it’s worth mentioning about Vesta’s armrest that it interferes with using the handbrake. It would be better if it were movable.

Ride and Handling

The Vesta Cross sedan has the same chassis as the previous SW Cross station wagon and, apart from the body type, there are no significant differences. Their main units are identical, even many body parts are compatible. There is a difference in the suspension design (springs, shock absorbers), and in the bifurcated muffler and plastic body kit, which cannot be installed on a regular Vesta sedan.

The difference in price between just a Lada Vesta and Vesta with the Cross prefix, depending on the version, is 53 – 63 thousand rubles. If you choose between a “cross” sedan and a station wagon, then the cost of the latter will be 32 thousand more expensive - this is a standard surcharge for the two-volume body of the Vesta.

Transmission Lada Vesta and X-Ray

Neither Vesta Cross nor XRAY differ from each other in their set of engines and gearboxes. But the hatchback has more trim levels and the price for the initial version is 579,900 rubles versus 763,900 for Vesta. However, the sedan has better handling and acceleration dynamics. But there are controversial points: Vesta Cross drives fine on the highway, but in traffic jams there is a noticeable lack of traction at the “lower” levels.

The top version of XRAY has a trump card hidden up its sleeve - “robot”! It is he who helps where it is difficult to travel. However, sometimes it is inadequate in choosing driving modes, so most owners prefer “mechanics”: nerves are more expensive.

The transmission of the Vesta Cross sedan is slightly different from that found on station wagons. According to the manufacturer, the robotic gearbox of the top-end Vesta now changes gears faster. True, journalists who could tell about the updated “robot” AMT 2.0 never got it. In this regard, you’ll have to take the marketers’ word for it... But no one has any complaints about the “mechanics”. Perhaps, in this round there is a draw between Cross and XRAY.

Available engines and fuel consumption

For both cars, engines with a displacement of 1.6 and 1.8 liters, with a power of 106 and 122 hp, of domestic production are available. It is worth mentioning separately the Japanese motor for XRAY, which is currently no longer bet on it, since it is more expensive and more difficult to maintain. As for the VAZ 1.8-liter engine under the symbol VAZ-21179, it is, in fact, experimental and there are complaints about it. There is an opinion that its 122 “horses” are not enough for country roads, so overtaking must be done with careful calculation, as if you were a racer. The tachometer cutoff occurs earlier than expected.

There is no point in even comparing them in terms of speed: both cars are designed for relatively quiet driving. These are not sports sedans, but rather cars for travelers (with a stretch) and for family people (the latter applies more to the XRAY).

Suspension and handling

The Vesta Cross sedan's ride turned out to be worse than that of conventional sedans - the stiffer suspension and 17-inch wheels with low-profile tires (205/50 R17) are to blame.

But the car turns confidently and without rolls. And no road bumps can throw Vesta off course (which cannot be said about the oncoming air currents from oncoming trucks on country highways).

In terms of handling, Vesta is more playful than Xray, which especially helps on unpaved sections of the road and off-road. The steering wheel responds to even the slightest movement.

Wear tests

According to life tests of the Autoreview magazine, in 2016 the Lada XRAY hatchback traveled 32 thousand kilometers and passed tests in a corrosion chamber. In the summer of 2018, the Lada Vesta Cross passed the endurance test of the Fifth Wheel magazine, covering 9.5 thousand kilometers. What were the results?

XRAY showed unsatisfactory performance of doorways: dirt seeped in everywhere. At the same time, resistance to corrosion was exactly at the level of competitors on the B0 platform under the Renault brand. As far as we know now, the seals have been redesigned and they no longer cause problems.

It became easier off-road with switchable ESP. This was noted by all reviewers who dealt with the Xray crossover. During the tests, shortcomings in the factory firmware of the engine ECU were revealed, which have now also been eliminated. The robotic gearbox has shown its reliability.

However, in terms of the cost of scheduled maintenance, we get a VAZ at Renault prices. The overall reliability rating of XRAY showed only 14th place out of 19 according to Autoreview for 2016. Even taking into account the rising prices for spare parts, any previous Lada is cheaper in this regard than Xray.

What's up with Vesta?

During the tests, the first concerns were caused by the cast wheels: the discs vibrated desperately at high speeds. This was the price to pay for an excellent energy-intensive suspension.

A lighter body compared to its opponent gives Vesta Cross a slight advantage in dynamics and fuel consumption. The highest value achieved is 8.4 liters per 100 km.

After 9500 km, the front shock absorber boot fell apart and this was the only serious problem during the entire test period.

Which is better: Lada Vesta or X-Ray?

There is no clear answer to the question of which of them is preferable for the Russian car enthusiast. And not at all because these cars are unsuccessful and no one needs them. Of course, more complete information will be available in about six months, when sales data is updated with statistics on the new Vesta. But surely both cars will maintain high positions in the ranking, taking into account the constantly rising prices of foreign analogues.

Immediately after the start of sales, Lada Vesta caused a stir among motorists. Many of those who were looking for a car in the budget price segment began to consider this model in more depth. Ultimately, the majority of motorists preferred Vesta over models from foreign manufacturers, which cost more. However, after the start of sales of the Lada-X-Ray, buyers began to think about what to choose - a cheaper sedan or a roomy city hatchback. Some car enthusiasts still have not found an answer to this question. Therefore, it will be considered in more detail. We will compare "Vesta" and "X-Ray" below.

Main differences between the models

The main difference, judging by the reviews, between the Lada-Vesta and the Lada-X-Ray is that the sedan is a car developed completely from scratch. Its development continued for quite a long period, but they began to talk about Vesta already in the early stages of construction. The model is popular because people have been waiting for its appearance for a long time. Regarding X-Ray, we can say that it was not developed from scratch. The model was based on the no less famous Renault Sandero model, and it was built on the basis of the Logan, which has been tested over the years by many taxi drivers in Russia.

In this case, people get confused in their choice. They think about what is better to choose - new developments and sensations or a reliable platform that has long proven itself to be good. So far there are no exact answers to this dispute. All differences will be discussed in more detail below. Which is better - Vesta or X-Ray?

Body

Some drivers choose a car based on the prestige of a particular brand. However, in this case this factor is minimal, since both models are produced by the same company. Many people judge prestige by looking at the body; they differ between Vesta and X-Ray.

Vesta is produced only in a sedan body, but in the near future the plant is preparing to present other versions to the public: a version with increased ground clearance and a car with an extended wheelbase. The latter will be produced in limited quantities, but this version looks more prestigious than the others. Many VAZ car lovers are looking forward to these new items.

"X-Ray" is available for free sale only in the hatchback body. Some people believe that the model is a crossover, but this is not so. For fans of light off-road driving, AvtoVAZ is still preparing a version of the XRAY Cross, which can be considered a full-fledged crossover. Changes in the new product will be minimal: all-wheel drive, increased ground clearance, various body linings and other improvements.

If you like sedan cars, then it is best to choose the Lada-Vesta. If you like “pseudo-crossovers”, the size of which is slightly larger than that of other cars, then it is better to give preference to “X-Ray”. There are no suitable options for station wagon lovers at the moment, but Vesta should soon appear in this body style. The same applies to those who like crossovers to overcome light off-road conditions. AvtoVAZ is preparing Xray Cross for them.

Dimensions

Externally, the cars do not differ much from each other in size. However, if we look at everything in more detail, we can see that everything is different.

The Lada Vesta is almost 300 mm longer than the X-Ray, and therefore it is more comfortable due to its larger wheelbase. The cars are completely identical in width. The heights of the models are different: Vesta is 73 mm lower than X-Ray, although visually this difference seems larger. This is due, in particular, to the ground clearance - the X-Ray has 17 mm more and is equal to 195 mm, while the Vesta has 178 mm. When it comes to luggage compartment capacity, the sedan wins - its volume is 480 liters instead of 361 liters for the hatchback. Although the X-Ray looks larger in appearance, it weighs 40 kg less.

For those who value space and capacity, it is considered better to buy a Vesta; the X-Ray is less spacious. In addition, it is more comfortable due to its wheelbase. If there is a need to overcome light off-road conditions, then it is better to give preference to the X-Ray. It is worth noting that with the rear seats folded down, the luggage compartment volume of the hatchback increases to 1207 liters. Vesta does not have such an opportunity.

Appearance

You will notice if you compare the Lada-Vesta and the Lada-X-Ray that the exterior of these two models has the same features. This is due to the fact that after the start of sales, the Lada-Vesta began to enjoy enormous popularity and therefore the designers decided to make the X-Ray in a similar style. The front ends of the cars are almost identical. If you look closely, you can see the letter “X”, which is drawn by the headlights, radiator grille, fog lights and bumper air intake. The models also have very similar hoods. However, when examining the cars from the side, it is noticeable that the X-Ray seems to have a shortened front part, unlike the Vesta. And yet it’s too early to say which is better: “Vesta” or “X-Ray”.

The models are also similar from the side. They have X-shaped patterns that make the cars look more modern. However, this makes "X-Ray" feel short. Vesta does not have this problem. Many owners complain that small diameter wheels are installed on the X-Ray. However, the manufacturer installs 15- and 16-inch wheels on the model, but in the massive wheel arches such wheels seem very small. Some X-Ray owners immediately after purchase install larger radius wheels on it.

Which car is better: Lada-Vesta or X-Ray - it’s hard to say, the design has minimal differences. As mentioned above, cars differ only in body styles. Otherwise, they are almost the same, and there is no noticeable difference between them.

"Lada-Vesta" and "X-Ray": characteristics

An equally important criterion when choosing a car is its technical characteristics. They are different for Vesta and X-Ray. With what? To answer this question, let's look inside the cars.

Power unit

Judging by the number of options offered, the hatchback wins. It is available for purchase with 3 different motors. Lada Vesta comes with only one engine option.

Both cars are equipped with a 106 hp engine. With. from AvtoVAZ. This engine was installed on others, so many people know about its reliability. It is 4-cylinder, 16-valve and has a distributed fuel injection complex. Of course, the motor is not the most powerful, but it is enough for these models. "Lada-Vesta" with this unit accelerates to 100 km/h in 11.2 s, while "X-Ray" does it longer by 0.2 s. In this indicator, the sedan wins. However, it is already losing in maximum speed: Vesta has 175 km/h, while X-Ray has 176 km/h. You will have to overpay a little for this, since Vesta’s consumption is on average 0.5 liters lower. With such an engine you shouldn’t count on exorbitant power, but it is more than enough for a quiet ride.

"Lada-Vesta" is presented only with this engine. X-Ray also has 2 more engine options. One of them is a 110 hp engine. pp., it is a joint development of the Renault-Nissan alliance. Its device is identical to the previous one. According to the engineers, the engine should have a power of 116 hp. s., however, it was reduced for some reasons. Thanks to innovations, this engine has good traction and is more economical. Top speed has also increased to 181 km/h.

The 122 hp engine is still the most popular. With. and volume 1.8 l. It was developed by AvtoVAZ engineers. At the moment it is installed only in X-Ray. Thanks to a torque of 170 Nm, the engine accelerates the car to 100 km/h in just 10.9 s. The top speed has also increased compared to other variants and is 186 km/h. Fuel consumption has not increased here. This was achieved thanks to the innovations of engineers. The engine could accelerate the car even faster, but due to the fact that the robotic gearbox does not work perfectly, this is impossible. If this engine were installed with mechanics, then realizing the full power of the unit would be much easier.

If a powerful engine is important, then at the moment it is better to give preference to the Lada X-Ray car. Its engine range includes a powerful 122-horsepower engine, which is not available for Vesta. However, the company plans to fix this soon and begin installing the engine in the sedan. In this case, Vesta should become faster than X-Ray. Implementing this engine in a sedan is not the easiest task, so it is being postponed.

Transmission "Lada-Vesta" and "X-Ray"

In terms of checkpoints, everything is much simpler. The cars have almost identical boxes. Only a 5-speed manual transmission and a robot are installed here. Lada-Vesta is equipped with two options: a manual transmission, developed by AvtoVAZ employees, and AMT, a French-made robot.

They did not install Russian-made gearboxes in X-Ray. The model is equipped only with a French-made gearbox - these are JR5 512 and JH3 518. The operation of domestic and foreign gearboxes is not much different from each other. Both options shift gears smoothly, do not create extraneous noise and are quite short-throwing.

Many cars in the same price category are equipped with automatic transmission, which is better according to reviews. "Vesta" or "X-Ray" do not have this. Only mechanics and robot are installed here. The management of the enterprise took such measures in order to reduce the cost of production, since the introduction and subsequent installation of the machine gun in cars would require additional costs. It is worth noting that the robot is sometimes late in changing gears and this causes jerking. But many Lada-Vest and X-Ray owners are used to this.

Suspension

Many argue that the Lada X-Ray is a crossover. However, it is not. Proof of this is the lack of all-wheel drive. The model is a hatchback with increased ground clearance. There are no disputes regarding Vesta.

Apart from the increased ground clearance, there are no more differences between the cars in terms of suspension. The front part has struts with springs and independent suspension. A torsion beam is installed at the rear.

Salon

The cars are very similar inside. And it’s impossible to say that Vesta is better than X-Ray. They have almost identical steering wheels, center panel design and seats. However, there are still differences. The interior of both models is well designed, all elements are well assembled. There are no squeaks or backlashes while driving. The seats are quite comfortable, however, on the rear sofa with the headrests lowered down, the seating position for passengers is uncomfortable, as they rest against the shoulder blades.

The interior of both models is equally good. It is very difficult to answer the question of which is better: “Vesta” or “X-Ray”. All elements are made from approximately the same materials. In terms of sound insulation, the differences are also minimal; it is at a decent level. The X-Ray is better here only because it is much more comfortable for tall passengers to sit in it due to the structure of the roof. It also has more luggage space with the seats folded down.

Options

Both cars are presented in 3 trim levels: classic, comfort and luxury. In the standard configuration, Vesta is equipped rather poorly. Of all the amenities, there are only electric windows, an on-board computer and 2 airbags. At X-Ray the situation is similar. In the average configuration, Vesta has body-colored door handles and rear-view mirrors, as well as a mirror in the passenger's sun visor. The X-Ray is equipped in the same way, but in addition it has 16-inch wheels. Luxury cars have the same equipment. All possible options are installed in them.

Price

In its standard configuration, Vesta will cost the buyer 529 thousand rubles, while X-Ray with the same equipment will cost 589 thousand rubles. In the luxury version, the sedan costs 672 thousand rubles, the hatchback - 742 thousand rubles. You can also purchase Vesta in lime color, paying an additional 30 thousand rubles.

Which is better: Lada Vesta or X-Ray?

It’s a matter of everyone’s choice, because, as they say, there are no comrades according to taste. If you need a stylish sedan with low consumption and good traction, then Vesta is an excellent option. If you want a crossover for off-road driving, but you are not ready for large expenses, then it is best to choose X-Ray.

Bottom line

In conclusion, it is worth noting that each of the cars under consideration is good in its own way. Both models are manufactured by the same company, so the quality of workmanship and power units are approximately the same. The main difference between cars is the cost. We hope you received the answer to the question of which is better: Lada-Vesta or X-Ray, and the reviews from the owners were useful to you.
