Lubricants TM-1 and TM-2 have proven themselves well in this capacity. In addition, Lukoil TM-5 transmission fluid was developed and introduced into production.

Experts advise using lubricants that meet API GL-4 standards in VAZ 2109 transmissions and their modifications. If the owner does not know what kind of lubricant is in the box of his Nine, it is best to use API GL-4 class lubricant. TM-4 or TM-5-9P oils also meet the relevant requirements. Unfortunately, the latter type of lubricant is difficult to find on sale, so it can be successfully replaced with TM-4-12 oil. It is allowed to use liquids that correspond to classes 75W-90, 80W-85, 80W-90 from any manufacturer, but provided that they have high quality indicators.

Level control and required volume

Repairing a failed VAZ 2109 gearbox is not a cheap operation, so you should check the lubricant level regularly. Experts recommend doing this every 5 thousand kilometers or once a year. If low oil volume is detected, it should be refilled. This will ensure a long service life of the box.

To check the oil level in the gearbox, you need to use an inspection hole or overpass. In this case, the car should be positioned so that the right side is slightly elevated. This can be easily done by placing a board, brick or other suitable object under the wheel. After which you can start checking the lubricant level in the Nines gearbox.

Drivers use this word to refer to cars with five-speed gearboxes that have a dipstick located in the engine compartment next to battery. They control the lubrication level. Before removing the dipstick, the area around it is thoroughly wiped from dirt and dust to prevent it from getting into the crankcase. After this, the dipstick is removed and wiped with a rag, then it is installed in its place. Now you need to take out the meter again and look at the trace of the transmission fluid. It should be located between two marks, which are designated as MIN and MAX. If so, you can continue to use the machine.

According to the instructions, the gearbox of the four-speed VAZ 2109 contains 3 liters of oil. But it is also advisable to purchase lubricant in quantities of 4 liters. A small amount of fluid may be needed to add to the gearbox housing during operation of the vehicle.

Topping up oil

How much oil is poured into the VAZ 2109 box is already known, you can start topping it up. The process of adding lubricant to non-serviced and serviced boxes is different, this is due to design features these nodes. It is important to note that you should only add the type of lubricant that is used in this gearbox.

Lubricant is poured into four-stage units through the filler hole, which can only be reached from the bottom of the engine compartment. The procedure is performed with a syringe for liquid oils. It is necessary to pour oil into the box to the required level.

The place where it is installed is thoroughly wiped with a rag to remove dirt, then the probe is removed from the socket. It is convenient to top up using a syringe, a large-volume rubber bulb or a funnel. The device is installed in the measuring hole and the required amount of oil is added.

DIY oil change

You can perform this operation yourself, since there are no particular difficulties when replacing the lubricant, and you do not need special equipment or tools.

Tools and materials

To replace, you need to prepare the following:

  1. New lubricant for filling into the gearbox. The volume of liquid depends on the design of the mechanism.
  2. An empty container for collecting waste liquid, the capacity of which should be slightly more than 3 liters.
  3. Rags.
  4. Socket wrenches for 12 and 17.
  5. A syringe with a hose for a gearbox without a dipstick, a funnel or a rubber bulb for boxes with a dipstick.

Before starting work, you need to warm up the lubricant in the transmission; to do this, just drive 10 km.

Drain the oil

Before adding new lubricant, it is necessary to drain the old oil that has used up its life. This process takes no more than 15 minutes.

The procedure will be as follows:

  1. The machine is installed on a lift or inspection pit.
  2. Use a rag to wipe the filler and drain plugs.
  3. Using a 17 key, slightly unscrew the filler cap to release air from the gearbox.
  4. Place the empty container under the drain hole and unscrew the plug.
  5. The waste is drained, and after the liquid has flowed out, the lid is replaced.

While the waste fluid is draining, inspect the drain plug for metal shavings. If it is detected, you should flush the gearbox housing.

Consequences of untimely replacement
