More and more car enthusiasts, choosing analog optics, opt for H7 headlights. In this article we will try to name the best h7 low beam lamps currently available on the market.

    Automotive low beam lamps type H7 are not a new product at all. They have been available on the market for more than 15 years, and in a huge range. Sellers offer hundreds of different items, each of which has unique technical parameters (amount of energy consumed, level of light output, beam brightness, range, etc.). There is no absolute leader, but the participants from the next list, out of ten positions, have secured a place in the top for one reason or another, which we will discuss in detail.

    Hella H7 +90%- one of the leading models on the halogen lamp market. The Hella company is one of the divisions of the large Philips concern (about whose products below), and is its subsidiary. Despite the positioning of the brand as “budget”, this particular model demonstrated good test results (1400 lm - luminous flux).

    Osram Night Breaker unlimited– such a long name hides an impressive lamp that has been showing the best brightness coefficient for many years now. The luminous flux of this device is 1500 lm, and the beam range is increased by 10 meters in comparison with competitive models. Such a striking result may create uncomfortable conditions for oncoming drivers, but it still falls within the accepted norm.

    Koito Whitebeam III– this model from Japanese creators demonstrates an acceptable result, which is slightly lower than the products described above. The tungsten filament here is thicker, thanks to which the luminous flux is 1355 lumens. The low and high beam indicators here are slightly higher than the accepted norm (21 thousand and 17 thousand kilojoules, respectively). From a legal point of view, there are no violations, but inconvenience and blindness are possible.

    Bosch Plus 90– this is one of the first models (on the market since 2009), but at the same time one of the most successful. The 90% brightness provided by this lamp was considered an unattainable result for a long time. The technology of cone-shaped beam directions of the lighting beam contributes to higher illumination of the road surface, and sufficient filling of the bulb with xenon contributes to high-quality light transmission. It is equal to 1550 lm, and is absolutely safe for road users.

    Philips Vision Plus +60% is an affordable model from a well-known manufacturer, which was created for car enthusiasts who are not chasing “super-brightness”. However, the luminous flux in this model is decent - 1450 lumens, and the illumination indicators of the near zone (50R) and far zone (75R) are equal to an impressive 27 thousand and 13,375 kilojoules, respectively. Such a product is within the permissible value and demonstrates an impressive service life if the headlamp is properly cared for.

    Osram Silverstar version 2.0– another product from a well-known manufacturer of automotive (and not only) lighting. The claim on the packaging about 60% brighter luminous flux, in comparison with standard analogues, is supported by 1490 lumens in reality. The tungsten filaments here are thicker than those of competitors, and therefore the beams of light do not scatter and perform well even in poor visibility on the road (blizzard, fog).

    Philips X-treme Vision +100%- a controversial model in the market of lighting equipment for cars. The fact is that this model is the next generation of the Philips Vision Plus +60% described above, but with all this, it has indicators that are not only not improved since the release of the previous model, but in some way shifted for the worse. Luminous flux – 1.4 thousand lm, low beam – 25750 cd, high beam – 12625 kilojoules. At the same time, the price has increased in comparison with its “younger brother”.

    Valeo +50% Light– the most affordable option in the price category among the previously presented models. The value of all indicators is slightly lower than that of competitors, but still a good result: 1450 lumens, almost 28 thousand cd in the near zone, and 11 and a half cd in the far zone.

    Philips Vision +30%- this is the choice that suits drivers who are not accustomed to sacrificing the quality of the goods they consume. Original components (quartz glass), as well as the unique development of all components, allowed this model to be included in the list of leaders. From a technical point of view, the luminous flux does not “shine” with high numbers - only 1390 lm, but the illumination is at a decent level (25750/11300 cd).

    Osram Super +30%- the last one on this list, but not in terms of quality, is a lighting device. The model demonstrates good results in the test, and the manufacturer’s statement that the light brightness is 30% greater than that of basic analogues is fully confirmed. The only disadvantage of the lamp can be considered an unacceptably high brightness level, which will disturb drivers during night trips (841 cd, with the norm being 750 cd).

    The test of H7 lamps turned everything upside down. We are no longer sure that we were right when, based on the results of tests of H4 halogen lamps, we recommended that anyone concerned about the safety of night trips should first of all pay attention to lamps from well-known brands. Expensive branded H7 lamps, which we considered as favorites, failed the tests, which was the biggest surprise of this test.


    However, various kinds of tests were rich in surprises. The surprises began with the search for a car whose headlight would become a test one. Besides the fact that there are not so many models that use H7 lamps in the headlights compared to the wide selection of those that use H4 lamps, as soon as a suitable candidate appeared, there was some kind of catch. One has headlights that need to be polished, another has a white coating on the inside of the glass, which is most likely a result of the headlight reflector burning out, and the third has something else that can affect the quality of light.

    But here we have a new VW Polo Sedan with headlights in ideal technical condition for the test - thank you "Atlant-M Sukharevo" for providing the car so quickly. If so, we are going with nine lamps, purchased back in March at randomly selected retail outlets in Minsk, to the “Resource Center” of the Automotive College named after Academician M.S. Vysotsky.

    Waiting there is the SKO-SVET-A device, designed to measure the light parameters of vehicle headlights. The device has passed state verification.

    We used the test methodology, but if then the voltage in the on-board network of the test car was maintained at a level of 13.8-14.0 V using a starter charger, now the lamps will be checked with the engine running.

    First of all, we assessed how the standard lamp shines.

    There is a small flaw in the picture of the cut-off line - the angle of the “bird” runs parallel to the normative border, but slightly lower than required, which should slightly worsen the lighting of the right side of the road when the car is moving in real conditions.

    According to standards, above the border in the so-called shadow zone, the light intensity should not be more than 750 candelas (cd). Otherwise, oncoming and passing (through the rear-view mirrors) drivers will be blinded.

    Below the limit, the light intensity must be at least 1600 cd, otherwise the driver will have to drive the car in low light conditions. The standard lamp met the required luminous intensity parameters.

    It remains to be seen what the Polo Sedan is equipped with at the factory.

    Osram! It’s a good choice for initial equipment, but we can’t call the light from the standard lamp a reference light due to the incident with the bird’s angle.

    Let's move on to checking the light bulbs purchased for testing. The first was the Neolux lamp, the most inexpensive of the products we purchased for the test. The inscription “German Technology” on the front side of the package should speak for itself, but much more informative are the inscriptions “Made in India” and “India” printed on the side of the box and the base.

    It is noteworthy that Neolux was found in two retail outlets, while the seller of one of them was sure that she sold German lamps, and was very surprised when I showed her where Neolux was actually manufactured.

    However, the Indian lamp turned out to be not so bad. The complaint about the cut-off line picture is actually the same as the standard Osram one.


    “India” should not blind other participants in the movement, and the fact that in terms of light intensity, as it later turned out, it was somewhat inferior to all other participants in the test, can be attributed to its low cost.

    Only for 1600 rubles. more expensive Neolux lamp "Dialuch". I won’t hide that I was rooting for this lamp. Not the same way, of course, as I support the football team BATE, but something like that. Why? The countrymen did it anyway.

    I really wanted that this time the Brest Electric Bulb Plant, surrounded by “foreigners,” would not let us down in the same way as during the H4 halogen test.


    And “Dialuch” did not disappoint. He drew a picture of the cut-off line no worse than Osram and Neolux, and demonstrated the power of light better than “India”. You are going the right way, comrades!

    Next was Narva. Among the inscriptions on the packaging we again see German Technology, but the base suggests that the lamp was made in Poland.



    Let there be Poland. The main thing is that Narva became the very participant in the tests that left us no chance to find fault with either the cut-off line design or the magnitude of the light intensity.

    When I bought Lynx, I saw the hieroglyphs on the box and decided that it was a Chinese light bulb. Having read on the packaging that the manufacturer of the lamp is Akita Kaihatsu Y.K., Japan, I doubted whether it was worth taking it for testing.

    What kind of catch can you expect from “Japan” with its unsurpassed workmanship? And only the desire to pit German Technology and Japan Technology against each other, as well as the fact that we had not tested Japanese lamps before, pushed us to purchase.

    What a mistake this desire saved me from became clear when we saw what Lynx “drew”! At first we decided that we had installed the lamp in the headlight incorrectly, but the lamp was in place as it should!

    It turns out that the Lynx emitted a decent piece of unshaded light flux into the shadow zone of the low beam on the left side of the light spot, which would hit oncoming people in the eyes and blind passing drivers. If you try to adjust the headlight, lowering the light part of the spot to a horizontal line so that the headlight does not dazzle, the illumination on the right side will disappear. This means that the driver of a car in which Lynx is parked runs the risk of not seeing in time that there is a pedestrian on the side of the road who thinks he can be clearly seen and is preparing to cross the road right under the nose of the car. Or radish horseradish is not sweeter - a tractor is left on the side of the road until the morning.

    However, these were still flowers! The berries began when we checked the strength of the Japanese low beam above the cut-off line. It turned out to be equal to 1961 candelas, which far exceeds the maximum permissible light intensity in the shade according to the standards. To make it clear how much this really is, I will say that in the test of H4 lamps with an intensity of 1949 cd, a lamp from the Brest plant shone in the lighting area. But this is the lighting zone, and here there is shadow - wow, the Japanese have it! You won't envy those who manage to get caught in the light of a car equipped with Lynx bulbs!

    What's the matter anyway? Due to the way the cut-off line is blurred, it seems that the lamp does not fall into the focus of the headlight. We place Narva, which gave the perfect picture, to the left of Lynx. The difference is visible in the bases, but the distance from the base surface to the filament coils seems to be the same by eye. In general, it is unclear where the Japanese screwed up.

    After Lynx it was Patron's turn. This lamp is the only one whose place of production we could only guess at. The manufacturer did not skimp on the inscriptions ISO 9002, Original Quality, TUV, TecDoc, Advanced Technology, but we did not find any indication of the place of manufacture either on the packaging or on the base.

    However, there are no other complaints about Patron. The angle of the “bird” is slightly lowered, but isn’t that what we observed in the previously tested lamps, with the exception of the ideal Narva and the goofy Lynx?


    Patron is also fine with light power.

    We change the Patron headlight to SCT White Plasma Xenon. There would be a question about the origin of the lamp, since on the packaging and base there are indications only of SCT Germany, however, an additional label is affixed to the box, from which it follows that the lamp was made in China.

    And again, not the same! The shortcomings in the cut-off picture are the same as those of the Lynx, although less pronounced.


    True, the SCT lamp met the standard light intensity indicators, but you can’t expect high-quality light distribution from it, no matter how you adjust the headlight.

    To be honest, after SCT we no longer hoped for surprises, because only representatives of the brands were left out of the test participants. So, GE, place of production - Hungary.

    So what do we see? The horizontal section of the cut-off line does not coincide with the standard line, but goes up from the center of the light spot to the edge. If the road is two lanes, this may not be a big deal, but if there are more lanes, the driver of the oncoming car in the far right lane may very well not thank the driver who installed GE light bulbs in his car.

    It’s good that at least the Hungarians didn’t overdo it with the power of light.

    Unfortunately, this cannot be said about Philips Vision +30% (place of production - Poland). At first we thought that we had mistakenly taken the already tested SCT White Plasma Xenon instead of Philips - the picture was too similar.

    But no, nothing is mixed up. Maybe it was installed incorrectly? Again, not the same - the lamp in the headlight is as it should be.

    We begin to measure the light intensity - we get 810 cd in the shadow, but it should be no more than 750 cd. The packaging says "+30%". This means that the lamp under test has a 30% increase in luminous flux. But does this mean that at the same time the standard must be violated in the area responsible for dazzling other road users?

    By the way, on the SCT packaging there is also an indication of an additional 30% of light, but this lamp did not cross the regulatory threshold for light intensity in the shade.

    The last participant in the test is Osram Halogen. We readily believe in the inscription on the Original Spare Part packaging, because what else can we do if the standard lamps are also Osram?

    What we can’t believe is the picture that Osram Halogen drew on the device screen! Nothing like it compared to a standard lamp, and the problem is the same as what was just observed in Philips - unshaded light comes out into the shadow part of the light spot.

    We will not repeat what this entails. And in terms of light intensity in the shadows, Osram Halogen has only Lynx as its competitors. I never foresaw that German Technology and Japan Technology would butt heads in this way.

    However, what kind of Technology are they selling on our aftermarket? Why are the markings on the bases of the standard Osram so strikingly different from the one with Original Spare Part written on the box? Maybe manufacturers are lying when they say that parts for conveyor assembly and original spare parts are produced on the same equipment and using the same technology? None of the other lamps have such blurry, hard to read markings on the base. Maybe it wasn't Osram in the box at all? And Philips wasn’t Philips at all?! Against the backdrop of Philips’ performance, how can we explain the result of Narva, which emerged victorious in our test, if Narva is a subsidiary budget brand owned by Philips?

    But maybe, while changing the light bulbs, we messed up something in the headlight adjustments? Unlike previous questions, this one is much easier to answer, because the stock Osram must return to its place and, together with the Polo Sedan, go back to the dealer. We set it up, look - and find no differences with our very first measurement.
