The whole point is that we rejoice at winning 1 chip not 5 times less than we regret losing 5. This is subjective and difficult to prove, but in practice this is exactly the case. Winning more often but less is a more positive way to spend your time than winning a lot and rarely (or even never). In fact, if you bet on one number, on average you will win 37 times. But do you need it, it’s depressing to lose chips 36 times and wait for that rare moment of winning?! Moreover, there can easily be more than 36 defeats in a row, and in order to “wait out” them, waiting for a win, you need more chips...
