Which car is better than the Solaris or Polo sedan. Comparison of Volkswagen Polo sedan and Hyundai Solaris

For a long time, experts have not been able to give an answer to the question of which is better to choose: Hyundai Solaris or Volkswagen Polo. This is not surprising, since the cars are really similar in many respects.

Today in the Russian car market there are a lot of cars belonging to the budget category. Among all, the "Korean" - Solaris and the "German" - Polo stand out brightly. Despite belonging to a specific state, cars are assembled in Russia. Our compatriots fell in love with these cars, as can be seen by looking at the dynamics of sales.

Features of appearance

Arguing about which choice should be made: Volkswagen Polo or Hyundai Solaris, you definitely need to remember about such a parameter as exterior... External indicators of the "German" are pleasantly pleasing. One feels the severity, which in this case is also combined with economy. In fact, the Korean manufacturer also saved a lot on its brainchild, and therefore both machines cannot boast of the highest quality materials.

Both in Hyundai and Volkswagen, it is possible to adjust the driver's seat. The position of the steering wheel also changes. The body of the Korean car looks more modern. It is suitable for people between the ages of 30 and 40. Solaris is equipped with a driver's seat, which is laterally supported, which is convenient when overcoming sharp turns.

Motorists with great experience assure that both cars will not initially please with their own dimensions. Among the pluses it is worth noting high quality side mirrors... As for the luggage compartment, its volume is identical. The ground clearance of the "German" is literally 10 mm more.

What's inside the cars

Now the next step is to inspect the salon. In general, everything is very ergonomic. It will not be difficult for you to reach the air conditioner start button while directly behind the wheel. But be that as it may, experts assure that the interior of the Korean car is a little more interesting, plus, the control of the headlights is under the steering wheel, but the Polo has this component separately.

Compared to the Polo, Hyundai has more space in the front, and as for the rear row of seats, the opposite is true.

Another especially important point is that in a Korean brainchild a tall person will not be comfortable, because he will rest his head against the ceiling.

Chassis

Probably, you have already decided for yourself what suits you best: Volkswagen Polo or Hyundai Solaris, but you can talk about this more precisely only after you know the parameters of the walker.

Knowledgeable drivers say that the Korean car is not the most comfortable steering, and there are some difficulties with the suspension. As soon as the car picks up speed, the control deteriorates noticeably. The developers are trying to get rid of this problem by installing stiffer rear springs and shock absorbers, but so far they have not been able to achieve the desired result.

Volkswagen on the road much more confident... The car responds adequately to pits and other defects in the road surface. If you find out which car of the Volkswagen Polo - Hyundai Solaris pair is more suitable for driving long distances, the "German" will be out of competition here.

Power units

Engine comparison is a must when it comes to choosing one vehicle out of two. On the Russian market, Polo is sold only with a 1.6-liter engine, the power of which is 105 horses. Hyundai wins in this aspect - here the choice is wider. It is possible to take a car with 1.4 or 1.6 motors, their power will be 107 and 123 hp.

Drivers write that the old automatic transmission of the "Korean" with four steps is much better than the modern automatic transmission of the "German" with six steps.

It remains to compare the fuel costs. Hyundai spends a few liters less, in almost all operating modes, and this is an extremely important plus, given all modern realities.

Additional options

Korean vs German car - who has more options? This criterion is also important. The Polo is equipped with rear power windows, but it lacks a side window, unlike its competitor. Volkswagen has an excellent built-in multimedia system as well as alarms and alloy wheels.

Today, amid the protracted financial crisis, many people are looking for the best car that will meet certain criteria:

  • Modern and reliable;
  • Safe and affordable.

It is these models that include Hyundai Solaris, Volkswagen Polo and Kia Rio. Three cars - two Koreans and one European. That is, completely different principles for the release of their products from manufacturers. Not surprisingly, making the best choice is difficult. It is for this reason that we propose to compare which is better: Kia Rio, Hyundai Solaris or Volkswagen Polo.

We will evaluate these vehicles according to several important criteria.

The appearance and features of the equipment of the interior of the models

So Koreans. The appearance of these cars is quite interesting and modern. It is immediately clear that the manufacturers relied on the younger generation of motorists, since the appearance of both models is quite aggressive. Yes, these are not elite sports cars, but also not the simplest budget cars, which are clearly intended only to move a person from point A to point B.

How can the Volkswagen Polo answer? and the German is no worse in terms of its exterior. True, the designers were targeting a slightly different category of potential buyers. This model is clearly intended for the typical middle-class person who lives in the city, works in a good office, has a beautiful wife and a couple of kids.

What's in the salon? In the salon of all three competitors, you can see the so-called universal standard. That is, nothing superfluous and special for the actual cost of the cars. Inexpensive plastic, but very high quality decorated, ordinary, but quite comfortable chairs, a minimum of technological inclusions, but everything is quite interesting and comfortable for the average buyer. Does the person want improvement? You are welcome!

Change the interior trim yourself, install a powerful audio system and other bells and whistles for your property.

Technical features of the three vehicles

If we compare Hyundai Solaris, Kia Rio and Volkswagen Polo in this regard, then we also get an ambiguous picture. The thing is that you will not find serious differences in technical characteristics. Yes, there is a certain difference, but it is minimal.

  • For example, Korean cars use two variants of gasoline engines;
  • German - three, also running on gasoline.

Yes, the Polo has better choices, but the Korean variants are more powerful:

  • The power of German power units is from 90 to 110 horsepower, with 1.6 liters of volume;
  • The power of the motors installed on the Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio is 108/124 horses with a volume of 1.4 / 1.6, respectively.

Everything else is also pretty similar and standard: the same type of suspension, braking systems, and so on. Even in the choice of a gearbox, the buyer will not be able to win much, since in all three cases both automatic transmission and manual transmission are offered. True, a six-speed automatic is provided for Solaris, which its two competitors cannot boast of.

Perhaps there is a significant difference in the cost of the models? Let's compare:

  • Hyundai Solaris. Price from 375 to 582 thousand rubles, depending on the configuration and equipment;
  • Kia Rio. Cost from 380 to 600 thousand in rubles;
  • Volkswagen Polo. You can find from 385,000 rubles. The extreme bar is approximately at the level of competitors.

That is, there are no serious differences according to this criterion.

Yes, the choice is really difficult to make. Therefore, a potential buyer is advised to heed the following tips:

  1. Find out what bonuses this or that seller provides.
  2. Get information about service and warranty service - for which of the options will it cost more? Find out the availability of service centers in the places where the car will be operated.
  3. Listen to your own feelings when examining all three proposed options.

A fairly large number of models of the budget segment are offered in the automotive market of the Russian Federation. The leading positions in popularity among them are occupied by quite powerful and roomy and Volkswagen Polo, which, by the way, are assembled on the territory of the country. Both cars won the trust of Russian motorists, which is confirmed by solid sales of these models. Let's try to figure out together which is better, Hyundai Solaris or Volkswagen Polo sedan. We are sure that the information presented in the article will help you make the right choice when buying a new car.

Exterior

About the appearance of cars, we can say that the Polo has representative and strict German features, trimmed to the smallest detail, but somehow boring. Naturally, the German company had to save on everything, however, this also applies to the Korean automaker, so inexpensive materials were used in both models.

The driver's seat can be widely adjusted and the steering column can be adjusted in two positions. seems more youthful, more suitable for motorists aged 30-40 years. The Korean model has a more comfortable driver's seat, with good lateral support, which allows the body to stay on tight turns.

According to experienced drivers, it is difficult to feel the dimensions on both cars at first, you need to get used to it. This is most likely due to the fact that neither the front end nor the rear of the car is visible, although the mirrors on both models are good.

Both cars have almost the same luggage space. 10 millimeters less than the Polo, and the rest of the dimensions are almost identical.

Salon

What about the ergonomics of the Volkswagen Polo or Hyundai Solaris? In both cars, all elements are in place, close at hand. Some believe that Solaris has a more interesting salon, and the control of the optics is on the left stick of the steering column, and on the Polo it is made separately. There is more space in the front seats in the Korean model, but in the rear there is more space in a German car; in Solaris, a tall person can rest his head against the ceiling.
Undercarriage

According to many motorists, the Korean car has insufficiently tuned suspension and steering. The car is difficult to control at high speed. The automaker is still struggling to balance the handling by changing the rear springs and suspension struts.

Volkswagen Polo behaves better on the road, which is manifested in sufficient steering sensitivity and well-responsive suspension pits. It can be concluded that in this aspect, a German car will be more suitable for long-distance trips.

Motors

The engine range of the Volkswagen Polo presented on the Russian market consists of only one 1.6-liter unit with a return of 105 horsepower, which runs on gasoline. The one is wider: it can be driven by either a 107-horsepower 1.4-liter engine or a 123-horsepower 1.6-liter unit. According to the drivers, even the old Solaris four-speed automatic transmission is more comfortable and dynamic than the German car's six-speed automatic transmission. The fuel consumption of the Korean model is significantly lower than that of the Polo, which is a significant plus.

Technical details

Let's compare the Hyundai Solaris and Volkswagen Polo sedan in the initial configurations with a manual transmission and power plants with a volume of 1.6 liters with a capacity of 123 "horses" for a Korean and 1.6 liters with a capacity of 105 "horses" for a German:

  • Solaris's engine uses AI-92 gasoline and develops a torque of 155 Newton / meters at 4.2 thousand revolutions per minute.
  • at Polo, the motor uses AI-95 gasoline and develops a torque of 153 newtons / meter already at 3.8 thousand revolutions per minute;
  • the Korean model has a semi-independent rear suspension on springs, and the German model has a semi-independent torsion bar;
  • the Solaris has drum brakes, and the Polo has disc brakes.

In terms of various options, the Volkswagen Polo has rear power windows, but there is no on-board computer. But on the other hand, the German car boasts a standard sound-reproducing system, light alloy wheels and an alarm.

For Hyundai Solaris with such equipment, you will need to pay 574,900 rubles, and the Volkswagen Polo will cost Russian buyers 619,000 rubles.

Other aspects

In theory, the German car should sell much better than the Hyundai Solaris, but thanks to the wider engine range and lower fuel consumption, the Korean is in the lead in terms of sales. An additional benefit of the Solaris is the 5-year warranty versus the 3-year Volkswagen Polo. In any case, these are two excellent cars, especially considering the amount that is asked for them, and the choice will still be yours.

We offer you to watch a video material on the topic of which is better Hyundai Solaris or Volkswagen Polo sedan, created by the journalists of the automobile portal Wheels.

Choosing the right car is troublesome. It is necessary to take into account all the pros and cons. Volkswagen Polo and Hyundai Solaris have long been popular with Russian consumers. Since the release, these cars have been more and more modernized to improve their qualities, which today constitute excellent healthy competition to each other. It is sometimes very difficult to choose your car. These cars are of the same price segment. So how do you know which one is better?

Polo. What is he?

Volkswagen is represented on the market by the German brand. And this is an indisputable plus. German car manufacturers present themselves as reliable and successful. And as in all German cars, the Polo feels style and moderation... No bulging elements or oblique headlights. Everything is strict, simple and convenient. Despite the budget cost, it feels like the design was done by professionals: all buttons are located where they should be. Everything is very convenient.

The manufacturer indicates the clearance, the so-called ground clearance, of the car is 163 mm, but it should be borne in mind that the declared indicator is relevant for an empty car. The more the cabin is loaded, the less the clearance will be. For example, a car with three passengers and a half-loaded trunk has a ground clearance of 120 mm. And this is a tangible difference from the declared one.

What is Solaris?

Stylish Hyundai Solaris is produced by a Korean company. The design of this car is very impressive. Despite the budget cost, the car instantly attracts attention on the road. It is not immediately clear that this is a state employee, the Korean is already very handsome.

The design is modern and bold. And this is not surprising, because I worked on the design myself Thomas Bürkl... This famous designer once worked for BMW, and today he creates the Hyundai style. And looking at Solaris, we can safely say that there is some kind of German gloss in it. In the latest version, the manufacturer has updated the front panel, thereby turning it towards the driver, which makes the ride very comfortable. Also in the salon there is a possibility of a speakerphone, which allows you not to be distracted from the control.

What do these cars have in common?

  • Price policy... Despite some discrepancies, in general, both cars will cost the buyer the same price.
  • Fuel consumption... Both Hyundai Solaris and Volkswagen Polo can be fueled with 92nd gasoline. Minor adjustments aside, the fuel consumption is the same.
  • The German has an acceleration of up to one hundred kilometers in 10.5 seconds... For comparison, a Korean for a similar maneuver will need 11.2 seconds, however, on the road, the differences are not particularly noticeable, both iron horses briskly react to the depressed gas pedal and rush forward.
  • Comfortable handling... Feedback from the owners of both cars speaks of soft handling and excellent engine response.
  • a wide selection of inexpensive spare parts in case of repair.

What are the differences between these cars?

  1. The Volkswagen Polo and Hyundai Solaris have a spacious and easy-to-use trunk. A priority for taxi drivers and travelers. Despite the fact that the Polo's trunk is slightly smaller in size, the opening is much more spacious, which makes it much more convenient to load luggage.
  2. The Korean has a new suspension in the latest version, the ride is noticeably softer than on the old versions. However, the same Polo served as the prototype for the update. Volkswagen was previously distinguished by a more comfortable ride, and now, despite all the updates from Hyundai manufacturers, there is a shaking on the uneven road and the driver needs to adjust the steering wheel. The German Polo is much more reliable in this regard.
  3. Additional advantages of the Polo are a rain sensor, parking sensors at the rear and front, as well as so popular on long trips Cruise control... Solaris does not have these options yet.
  4. Noise isolation... When driving around the city, you don't feel much of a difference, but you should go to the track and Hyundai Solaris loses noticeably, the cabin is too noisy, you have to communicate in a raised voice.
  5. Design... Volkswagen has it laconic. The manufacturer has worked on the appearance of the steering wheel and dashboard, which look amazing in the latest version. It is possible to bring the control of the phone, display and radio tape recorder to the steering wheel, which is very convenient. Additional lighting in the passenger compartment in the foot area creates a very welcoming atmosphere. However, some consider the model too conservative. The Korean Solaris compared to the German Polo is trendy and modern.
  6. When the cabin is fully loaded, sitting in the back is noticeably more comfortable in a Volkswagen than in a Hyundai, where the three of us cannot accommodate. In addition to the fact that the ceiling is low and often practically touches the head, it is also very uncomfortable for the third person in the middle to sit.
  7. But the Hyundai warranty is calculated for 5 years and 150,000 km, in Polo the standard 3 years and 100,000 km. If the buyer decides to part with his car after three years, it is much easier to sell the car under warranty at a better price.

So how do you decide which car is right for whom?

Active drivers will prefer the Hyundai Solaris for its striking looks, low fuel consumption and excellent handling. This car is very comfortable for two. Volkswagen Polo, on the other hand, is ready to accommodate five people, without depriving them of their convenience in the least. In the city, the bright Solaris will show its best side, but on long trips to Polo it is much more comfortable.

Fans of fast and frisky driving will appreciate the qualities of the Polo, it has better grip, excellent cornering, and on bumps, like a reliable horse, it stubbornly follows a given path, not trying to jump off the trajectory, like Solaris. But Hyundai is more popular with the beautiful half of humanity, its appearance is beautiful, and the steering wheel is noticeably lighter.

Whichever car the buyer decides to choose, Volkswagen Polo or Hyundai Solaris, in any case, he will be satisfied. Each of these cars has a lot of advantages for which they will fall in love with their owner.

Six or seven years ago, competition in the class of budget sedans was rather arbitrary. Few manufacturers offered technically modest and most often absolutely unattractive sedans. Among them, buyers had to choose the car that best met their requirements. However, the situation gradually changed. Almost all manufacturers have affordable sedans in the model range. And buyers, seeing this state of affairs, have become much more finicky.

Now one attractive price is not enough for successful sales. Car enthusiasts take into account everything - maintenance cost, performance, reliability, driving performance and design. However, the leaders in the class of budget sedans have been defined for a long time. They are rightfully Hyundai Solaris and Volkswagen Polo.

Interior and exterior

The Korean sedan has been updated this year. The Solaris design changes are not global, but they have clearly made the Korean sedan look more harmonious. The designers changed the shape of the radiator grille, corrected the shape of the front optics. As a result, the front Hyundai Solaris began to look much more solid. Buyers love it. But the Hyundai designers did not touch the rear part. She already suited everyone.

Korean Hyundai Solaris

Following Hyundai Solaris, the Volkswagen Polo has also been updated. But even in the case of a German car, it is quite difficult to notice new design elements. The grille in the refreshed Polo now features three chrome stripes. The front bumper has also changed slightly. In addition, daytime running lights appeared on all versions of the German car after restyling. And the more expensive Polo versions are now equipped with fog lights with cornering lights. As a result, the available Polo at the front began to resemble the more expensive Jetta model. Although behind the budget German sedan it will not be possible to confuse it with some other car. The classic taillights were not touched during the modernization.

German Volkswagen Polo

Finding changes inside the Volkswagen Polo is even more difficult. Aside from the new steering wheel, which is truncated at the bottom of real supercars, there is none at all. Only for the top version of the Highline can now be ordered a pretty two-tone black and beige interior trim. A little later, presumably at the end of the year, Polo will be offered a new multimedia system with a five-inch touchscreen display.

Volkswagen Polo interior

The situation is similar with Hyundai Solaris. The Koreans have made only minor cosmetic changes. The most notable of these is the new dark background for the center console display. In pre-styling cars, it was too bright and tired on a long journey. This issue has now been resolved. The most attentive motorists will also notice the redrawn symbols in the instrument cluster. Otherwise, the inside of the Korean car remains the same - cozy, stylish enough and comfortable for the driver. In terms of the quality of the materials used, both cars are also approximately on the same level. You can't find expensive soft plastic in them. And this is quite expected. But the build quality and fit of parts pleases. Manufacturers do not make any discounts on the budget of these models.

Hyundai Solaris hatchback interior

Tall passengers in Solaris and Polo will be cramped. Of course, they will withstand an hour or two, but on a long trip it will no longer be entirely comfortable. But for those passengers whose height does not exceed average, both cars will fit perfectly. There will be room in the knees and over the head, even with a small margin.

And of course Solaris and Polo pleasantly surprise you with their large trunks. In the German sedan, 460 liters are allocated for suitcases, packages and bags. In Hyundai Solaris with a sedan body, the trunk is even slightly larger - exactly 465 liters. In a Korean car with a hatchback body (this body type is not offered for the Volkswagen Polo), the luggage compartment volume is noticeably less, namely 370 liters. But the smaller volume is compensated by the widest possibilities for the transportation of bulky items.

Specifications Hyundai Solaris and Volkswagen Polo

But a direct comparison in technical terms will not work. And all because the base engine for the Volkswagen Polo is a 1.6-liter gasoline engine. Its output is a modest 85 "horses" and it works only with a manual gearbox. However, even these few "horses" drive the compact sedan quite actively - only 11.9 seconds from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour. And the top speed of 179 km / h looks very decent.

Most car enthusiasts, however, prefer to pay a little extra and choose Polo with the same engine, but in a more powerful 105-horsepower version. This version of the German sedan, moreover, can be equipped not only with "mechanics", but also with an automatic transmission. The dynamics of the Volkswagen Polo with a 1.6-liter 105 horsepower engine is good. The first hundred kilometers per hour Polo with "mechanics" is gaining in just 10.5 seconds. Fuel consumption is also good news. In urban conditions, the Polo will require 8.7 l / 100 km. Outside the city, the appetite is even less - only 5.1 l / 100 km.

This is where the choice of engines for the Volkswagen Polo ends. Only in May 2016, under the hood of the German car, a turbocharged 1.4 TSI petrol with a capacity of 125 horsepower should appear, which has been installed on the related Skoda Rapid model for quite some time. The current 1600 cc engine, by the way, will also retire soon. Already in December of this year, it will be replaced with a new power unit of the same volume, which will not only comply with Euro-5 environmental standards, but will also be slightly more powerful than its predecessor. In various boost options, it will develop 90 and 110 horsepower.

For a Korean car, it all starts with a 1.4-liter gasoline engine that develops 107 horsepower. And if "Volkswagen" combines their base engine only with "mechanics", then the Solaris engine can work in tandem with an automatic gearbox. With it, the Korean car gains the first hundred kilometers per hour in 13.4 seconds and consumes 8.5 liters of fuel in the city for every hundred kilometers. Hyundai Solaris with the same 107 horsepower engine and a manual gearbox is expected to be more dynamic and economical - 11.5 seconds of acceleration to one hundred kilometers per hour and 7.6 l / 100 km when driving in an urban cycle.

The second engine, offered for the Korean car, with a volume of 1.6 liters, develops 123 horsepower. Before the update, it was combined with an archaic four-speed "automatic" and a five-speed manual gearbox. However, during the upgrade, the Koreans added one additional stage to the "mechanics", and the automatic gearbox after the upgrade became a six-speed one. As a result, the updated Hyundai Solaris with a 1.6-liter engine has become more dynamic and more economical. In numbers, it looks like this. To accelerate to one hundred kilometers per hour, a car with a manual gearbox takes 10.3 seconds, and the version with an “automatic” does the same exercise for almost a second longer. In terms of fuel consumption, the situation is as follows - Solaris with an automatic gearbox in the city will require 8.8 liters of fuel for every hundred kilometers, and the same car with "mechanics" will consume only 8.1 liters of fuel.

So which car is the best of this pair? So far, the advantage is on the side of Hyundai Solaris. It is he who has been holding the leadership in his class in terms of sales for many years. And this is quite natural. The Korean car not only boasts a stylish, spectacular design, but also offers customers powerful engines and a good level of equipment. The Volkswagen Polo looks more modest against the backdrop of Hyundai in technical terms. Engines installed on a German car are weaker. At the same time, Volkswagen Polo with the same level of equipment is more expensive. And the price, as you know, in the class of budget sedans is often a decisive factor when choosing a car. On the other hand, for many car enthusiasts, it is the Volkswagen Polo that is the Das Auto for which it is not a pity to overpay a little. So whatever one may say, the rivals of Hyundai Solaris and Volkswagen Polo are worthy.
