Enabling the Ford Focus 2 function. Ford Focus II: Controversial point

Reading time: 4 minutes.

The second generation Ford Focus is no longer produced today. However, the number of cars sold is huge, and thousands of copies are in use throughout the Russian Federation. This is an excellent option for those who need an inexpensive machine that is reliable and easy to maintain. As practice shows, this is only a small list of advantages inherent in this car. Is it possible to somehow improve the operation of this model? What are the hidden capabilities of the Ford Focus 2? Let's figure it out.

To begin with, we note that the second generation of Focus was assembled in various countries, which could not but affect the setup of the car and its systems. For this reason, a situation may arise when it is possible to activate a particular function on one machine, but this cannot be done on another instance.

The fact is that from the factory some features on the car may simply not be installed and no manipulation will help enable them. However, many owners of the second generation Ford Focus experimented and independently activated various functions, including:

  • changing the settings of the head unit, which significantly improved the sound quality;
  • activation of Scandinavian light;
  • turning off the interior light, which lights up when the doors are opened;
  • disabling the seat belt signal on the dashboard.

Scandinavian light

Quite often, disputes arise about disabling the rear wiper, which turns on automatically. Some Focus owners note that they managed to do this. Most people say that it is impossible to deactivate this function on their own without making changes to the settings of the car control system. So, let's talk in more detail about those opportunities that you can definitely realize on your own at the second Focus.

As you know, many modern cars have such an option as automatic headlights. This is very convenient, but the second generation Focuses are not equipped with this function from the factory. In addition to being convenient, in some countries it is mandatory by law to drive with DRLs or lights on. This requirement also applies in the Russian Federation, and therefore activation of the Scandinavian light function is completely justified.

So, the advantages of this are obvious:

  • the driver will never forget to turn on the headlights, since the car will do this automatically;
  • A sudden change in lighting on the road will not be a problem, because the car’s headlights will be on, providing excellent visibility.

So, in order to implement this function on the Ford Focus 2 (including restyling), we need a standard set of tools (keys, pliers), wires, fuses (10 and 20 A) and connectors. In addition, you need to purchase a 4-pin relay. The relay from VAZ is excellent, it is very cheap and allows you to activate Ford secrets.

When all the parts are ready, you can start working. First you need to unscrew the terminals from the battery. After this, open the fuse box, which is located under the glove compartment. We attach the connectors to the wire and install everything into the block, not forgetting about the relay. The installation diagram can be found on the Internet. We also install fuses. After this, close the unit and connect the terminals to the battery. That's all, and now the second Focus has a Scandinavian light.

Automatic locking

This feature is quite useful, and it is very easy to activate.
. Its essence is that when the car starts to drive, the door locks automatically close and it is impossible to open the doors.

The function is activated by performing the following actions:

  • insert the key into the lock and turn on the ignition;
  • Close and open the doors 3 times in a row using the corresponding button;
  • turn off the ignition;
  • open and close the doors again the same number of times;
  • turn on the ignition, after which a short beep should sound;
  • open and close the doors, after which a long beep should sound;
  • turn off the ignition.

After performing these manipulations, the Focus doors will automatically close after the start of movement.

Is it worth or not to activate hidden functions on the Ford Focus 2 restyling.

The procedure for replacing the fuel pump on a Ford Focus 2 Scandinavian light Quite often, disputes arise about turning off the rear wiper, which turns on automatically. The relay from VAZ is excellent, it is very cheap and allows you to activate Ford secrets.

However, the number of cars sold is huge, and thousands of copies are in use throughout the Russian Federation.

So, the advantages of this are obvious:

If the window does not close completely when pressing the key once, repeat the procedure for restoring memory settings. Now take the manual and read on page 66. When you press the [double lock] button twice, the central locking system and the security alarm system are activated.

On vehicles without dual locking, the turn signal lamps will flash twice to confirm that the system is activated.

What you need to perform Ford computer diagnostics.

On vehicles equipped with double locking, the turn indicators cannot be activated. On vehicles equipped with a double locking feature, if you press the [dual locking] button twice with an interval of no more than three seconds, the double locking feature and interior scanning sensors will be activated.

The direction indicator lights flash twice to confirm that the system is activated.

It’s written crookedly... By default, the standard central locking is programmed to open all 4 doors from the first press of the key fob open button.

This mode can be changed to a mode in which the first press of the key fob open button will open only the driver’s door; if you press it again within 3 seconds, all other doors will open.

Changing the mode is very simple: A signal will sound and the dimensions will flash to confirm the mode change.

For this reason, a situation may arise when it is possible to activate a particular function on one machine, but this cannot be done on another instance. The fact is that from the factory some features on the car may simply not be installed and no manipulation will help enable them.

Connecting the adapter.

So, let's talk in more detail about those opportunities that you can definitely realize on your own at the second Focus. As you know, many modern cars have such an option as automatic headlights.

What can be activated on any car: We highly recommend this function for lovely ladies who carry their purse in the front seat. Activation of the possibility of installing xenon.

Automatic locking

Vehicles with automatic transmission are equipped with this option from the factory. The system prevents the car from rolling away when starting uphill and can help novice drivers.

The system allows you to determine the pressure drop by changing the wheel speed using ESP sensors. You will not be able to see the pressure reading, but if the pressure drops, a warning will light up on the instrument panel to check the pressure. Changing the octane number of 92 or 95 gasoline.

Ford Focus III Activating hidden functions

Changing wheel and disk size parameters. By default, you can only disable the APS traction control system, but it is not possible to disable traction control in corners without enabling the settings from the Ford Focus ST.

During normal driving around the city, even very dynamically, you will not feel any difference, but if you try to take part in races from a standstill, the ESP system will interfere with you. Many brands have it already programmed, but I personally didn’t have it. The function is activated by performing the following actions: As you know, many modern cars have an option such as automatically turning on the headlights.

Hidden features of Ford Focus 3 (p. 2)

This morning, on the way to work, I noticed an interesting detail in the operation of the heating system: with the A/C turned off (only the stove is working), I turn on the “circulation inside the cabin” button. But after a while I notice that the function is disabled (no icon on the screen, no recirculation). I can’t say exactly how long it takes for the self-shutdown to occur, but something like 1-3 minutes.
FF3 sedan 2.0 PS, mileage 6080 km.
I'll try to track down this incomprehensible moment in the evening.
Has anyone come across what this is? Cabin filter contamination sensor, air conditioning error, some kind of electronic brain? Or at the next plant I won’t see this anymore. Interesting. I'll tell you in the evening.
By the way, this reminded me of the operation of the air quality sensor found in a Volvo. But I haven’t heard of anything like this in Focus. It's a pity, great stuff =)

Regarding the issue of automatic shutdown of recirculation.
The experience of a weekend trip confirmed absolute independence in the operation of the climate control system.
That is, if you switch the control to the mode:
AUTO, MONO, A/C off, recirculation ON - then in my case, with the cabin filter operating for 3 months and in city traffic, recirculation is turned off haphazardly in the time range from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. It looks like some kind of sensor is still monitoring this.
So, I have not yet found official information on how it works and why, there is only the following:

Hidden text1)

“Note: If the system is operating in “AUTO” mode when the air temperature outside and inside the vehicle is sufficiently high, the climate control module will automatically select the air recirculation mode to achieve maximum cooling efficiency for the interior. Once the selected temperature is reached, the system will automatically select a new incoming air temperature.”

“When turned off, the HVAC system turns off and recirculates air.”

2)
Ford Club UA. The Ukrainian dealer seemed to think this was a problem and replaced the unit:
http://ford-club.org.ua/board/index.php?showtop...;page=2
“Posted 07 February 2013 – 01:45
... The air recirculation mode in the climate automatically turns off about 30 seconds after turning it on...”

“Posted 15 February 2013 – 12:03
If anyone is interested, the problem was solved by replacing the entire climate control module. Now it won’t turn off!”

In general, IMHO, switching off on your own is not bad, but 30 seconds is extremely short. In the near future I am going to change the oil, and at the same time I will change the cabin filter, I will leave the issue for control. And let's see what the St. Petersburg dealer says.
Thank you all for your participation.

Gadgets Ford Focus 2 hidden features

Good afternoon. Ford Focus 2 was produced from 2004 to 2011, with restyling in 2008. In addition to restyling, minor changes were made to the car throughout its production. In today’s article I will talk about the problem areas of the 2nd generation Ford Focus, and I will write the approximate cost of eliminating the jambs. The article is a visual aid for potential buyers.

About the Ford Focus 2 platform.

It's no secret that modern cars are produced on the so-called. platforms. Ford Focus 2 is based on the Ford C1 platform. Also produced on this platform: Mazda 3 (BK), Mazda 5 (BK), Volvo C30 (P14), Volvo S40 (P11), Ford C-MAX (C214), Volvo V50 (P12).

Accordingly, when choosing a Ford Focus, you can look at these cars.

Weaknesses of the second generation focus:

Body.

  • The body of the 2nd generation Ford Focus is galvanized, so cars older than 7 years rarely have through corrosion...
  • On older cars, rust starts from the sills and along the bottom edge of the doors.
  • The most problematic place is the back cover, this is especially evident on cars assembled in Spain and Mexico.
  • The paint on the front bumper and along the leading edge of the hood often peels off.
  • The chrome finish on the plastic often bubbles.
  • Headlights on pre-restyling cars often sweat. Coating the headlight glass with sealant.
  • The plastic rod leading from the lock cylinder to the hood latch often breaks. This can be treated by replacing the lock assembly (about 5,000 rubles), but some “Kulibins” install a metal rod from Mondeo.
  • Over time, crickets appear in the interior, especially on pre-restyling cars

Engine.

  • The most reliable engine in the 2nd generation Focus is the Duratec 1.6, but only if the timing belt is regularly replaced.
  • The 2.0 TDCi diesel is also reliable, but is rarely available for sale.
  • On Duratec 1.8 and 2.0 engines. after running 100,000 km. The thermostat fails. The cost of replacement is about 2000 rubles.
  • After restyling in 2008, the tensioner was removed on Duratec 1.8 and 2.0 engines and after a mileage of 30,000 km. The belt begins to slip, and it makes an unpleasant whistle. This can be treated by installing a tensioner from the pre-restyling version, the price of the issue is about 5,000 rubles..
  • The throttle assembly requires flushing every 50,000 km, and every 100,000 km the TPS fails due to a design flaw.
  • Often on Duratec 1.8 and 2.0 engines there is oil in the spark plug wells, the reason is the drying out of the valve cover gasket. The cost of fixing the problem is 3000 rubles.
  • If there is no traction after 3000 rpm and the Check Engine light is on, the exhaust manifold flap control valve has probably failed or is failing. Replacing the valve will cost approximately 8,000 rubles.
  • Until 2007, on 1.6 engines equipped with a phase shift system (Twin Independent Variable Camshaf Timing), camshaft couplings often failed. The cost of replacing them is almost 10,000 rubles.
  • When operating on low-quality fuel, fuel pump failure is common. The pump itself is quite reliable and runs for about 200,000 km, but its screen gets clogged with dirt and is not supplied separately for spare parts. Some services offer mesh cleaning, some replace the pump assembly. In any case, the operation requires removing the tank and costs about 5,000 rubles.
  • Sometimes, after a mileage of 100,000 km, on a Duratec 2.0 engine with a manual transmission, vibrations and jerking appear when running, the reason is wear of the dual-mass flywheel. This can only be treated by replacing it and costs about $800.
  • After a mileage of 150,000, the neutralizers fail, this is usually treated by replacing them with flame arresters (and sometimes they are simply punched), and decoys are installed on the lambda probes.

It is better to reduce the oil change interval on engines when operating in the Russian Federation to 10,000 km. (manufacturer recommends 20,000.

Transmission.

  • There are no particular problems in the transmission of the second focus. The 4F27E automatic transmission is reliable and easily covers 300,000 km.
  • The most unsuccessful gearbox is IB5, installed with a Dutatec 1.8 engine, after 70-80 thousand km the pinion axis in the differential breaks with a breakdown of the crankcase, on the same gearbox the input shaft bearing jams at a mileage of 150,000. When buying a car with this gearbox, be prepared in the foreseeable future to change it to an MTX75 from cars with a 2.0 engine. A contract gearbox costs an average of 30,000 rubles.
  • There is no need to be afraid of gears jumping out on cars with manual transmission; this can be eliminated by tightening the cables and is cheap.

Chassis.

  • The chassis itself is very reliable and does not have any particular problems (wheel bearings run 150,000 km). Many parts are unified with the Mazda 3 and are available for free sale.
  • If you are buying a car older than 2008. Pay close attention to the rear suspension; there have been cases of the rear hub breaking off along with the wheel while driving.

Steering.

  • On Russian roads, steering tips break after a mileage of 40,000-50,000 km. The cost of replacing all tips is about 5,000 rubles.
  • Pay attention to the condition of the steering rack. When there is a knock or when the oil change interval is missed in the gyroscope, it often fails. The assembled rake costs more than 30,000 rubles.
  • Also check the power steering when purchasing. If it doesn't work, don't buy it! A common problem is failure of the power steering board. At showdowns, the price of the board starts from 25,000 rubles (this is really a pain).

Electrics.

In general, the electrics are reliable, but there is a fly in the ointment:

  • The license plate light contacts oxidize within 2-3 years and can be treated by disassembling and cleaning.
  • On sedans, the wiring harness for the electric trunk lock often breaks.
  • The cabin temperature sensor often fails (the price of the sensor is 6,000 rubles).
  • The resistor that limits the speed of the stove often fails; it itself is not expensive, but changing is quite problematic (about 2,000 rubles with labor).

If you decide to buy a 2nd generation Ford Focus, the best choice would be a car with a 1.6 petrol engine or a diesel engine.

In conclusion, a short video review:

That's all for me today. If you have anything to add to my story about the problem areas of the 2nd generation Ford Focus, leave comments and share your experience.

You have set yourself the task of learning how to perform diagnostics and gaining access to activating hidden functions on a Ford car, and reducing the cost of visiting a service station. For this, today you have every opportunity. Of course, this will require some preparation.

What you need to perform Ford computer diagnostics.

The first thing you need to do is buy an adapter for diagnostics. Which one should I buy? The choice here is not very large - a scanner based on the ELM-327 controller or ELS27 adapters. If you decide to opt for a budget option, we recommend using a universal adapter. All these devices provide comfortable operation and, most importantly, they are ideal for working with FORD vehicle systems.

In addition to the adapter, you also need a computer. The best option is a laptop with a USB connector and Windows OS version no lower than XP.

We will use ELMConfig as a working program.

Connecting the adapter.

The initial connection of the equipment should be made in the following order:

    Connect the adapter to the computer;

    Install the driver;

    Install the software (ELMConfig);

    Disconnect the adapter from the PC;

    We insert the scanner into the diagnostic connector of the car;

    Turn on the ignition. Necessary to supply power to the adapter;

    Connect the connecting cord to the PC;

    Launch the ELMConfig program.

Now you have access to the car's systems and modules and can activate or disable various functions, including hidden ones.

Let's look at a few examples of activating and deactivating options on a Ford Focus 2.

Disabling the automatic window heating system.

In the main program window, select the button labeled “GEM” (General Electronic Module), go to the “Configuration” tab, and in the window that opens, go to the “page 2” tab. In this tab, in order to determine the activated options, we perform a reading - click the “Read from GEM” button. After reading, active functions will have tick marks.

Find the item "Automatic activation of heated windows" and uncheck it - hover the cursor and press the left mouse button. Next, you need to save the setting - this is done by clicking on the “save to GEM” button.

The program will offer to reboot the module - we agree, click the “OK” button. The work can be completed here.

You may ask why you need to disable this feature. Think for yourself, in winter, when starting the car is difficult, turning on the heating creates an additional load on the battery and generator, and if the car is parked outside and covered with snow, then it is not advisable to use the heating until the snow is cleared.

Deactivate the automatic activation of the rear wiper when moving backwards.

Cleaning the rear window is necessary in rare cases. Turning on the wiper in automatic mode leads to damage to the glass surface and rapid wear of the brushes. For this reason, it is logical to deactivate this function. To do this, in the ELMConfig program window, select the “GEM” module, go to “Configuration” - “page 3”. We read from GEM, uncheck the box next to the item “Activate the rear wiper when selecting reverse gear.” We save the setting - “write to GEM”, and reboot the control module.

The algorithm of actions when enabling/disabling any functions is approximately the same and, as you can see, no special knowledge is required to make changes.

Thus, using fairly simple equipment and free software, you can change the settings of many other functions.

Focus II is a car manufactured by Ford. These cars are no longer produced and can only be purchased used. As a rule, there is a demand for these cars only among young guys who have recently graduated from driving school. Many call Focus " credit sickness" or " office plankton machine”, due to the fact that they are often bought on credit by low-income citizens.

The 2nd generation of Focus was produced from 2004-2012. The suspension design, which was truly amazing and reliable, was carried over from the first generation. In 2008, restyled cars with an updated design went on sale. There is nothing left from the first generation (the only exceptions are the engine and roof).

Safety

The second generation Focus is one of the safest cars. After all, according to Euro NCAR it has five out of five stars for passenger safety (35) and child safety (40), but pedestrian safety is much lower, and is only two stars out of five.

Advantages and benefits of Ford Focus 2

  1. Several body styles: four-door sedan, three-door and five-door hatchback;
  2. Interior: ergonomic, different colors depending on the configuration, good sound acoustics, roomy, informative and readable instrument panel, decent air conditioning quality, leather or fabric seat upholstery, comfortable lumbar and lateral support;
  3. Luggage compartment: the volume of the sedan is 466 liters of luggage, the hatchback is 281 liters, if you fold the seat backs, the located seats increase to 930 and 1145 liters, respectively, the loading height is low, the openings are wide;
  4. Large range of power plants: 5 gasoline engines and one turbocharged diesel;
  5. Low fuel consumption for a car equipped with a 1.4 engine - in the combined cycle is 6.6 liters per 100 km;
  6. Electronic injection, modernized ignition system, good dynamics of the two-liter engine;
  7. Power plants comply with a standard of at least Euro-4;
  8. Reliable steering;
  9. Long service life of automatic and manual transmissions;
  10. The ride is durable and comfortable;
  11. Good controllability;
  12. Maintenance costs are low;
  13. You can install non-original spare parts, of which there is a huge selection on the market.

Weaknesses of Ford Focus 2

  • Body;
  • Salon;
  • Electronics;
  • Engine;
  • Transmission;
  • Suspension.

The first thing you should look at when buying is the body. You should immediately understand that the car is quite old, and that the factory paint has faded somewhere, and the body and doors may be rusty, the interior trim will be worn out, and the sills and bumpers will have operational damage. But still, Ford has other disadvantages in the body that you need to be aware of and fix them immediately after purchase. Ford Focus 2 does not like Russian winters, which is why the Focus has frequent breakdowns:

1) Problem with locks. The most important thing is that with a cylinder for opening the hood (a feature of the Ford Focus of both the 1st and 2nd generations is opening the hood with a key), the lock turns sour. There are two ways to fix all this: apply penetrating lubricant to the lock cover (where the emblem is) or replace the lock from plastic to metal, which will fit well on a Ford Mondeo.

2) Sometimes there are “jambs” with incorrect operation of the central locking, which is responsible not only for locking the door itself, but also for the gas tank flap.

3) Problems with the chrome coating, which is supposed to make the car more beautiful, but after several winters, rust begins to appear in the place between the metal and chrome, which no longer makes the car beautiful.

4) If your car is a hatchback or sedan, then you should regularly check the license plate lights, because These body types have problems with the wires of this unit, which becomes corroded due to moisture.

5) Malfunctions with windshield washers, which consists in the fact that the windshield washer hoses fly out of their mountings and flood the engine.

Overall, the Ford's interior is not bad. The quality of the fabric upholstery is excellent, it withstands the dry cleaning process remarkably well and is wear-resistant, but after a few years of use the interior begins to noticeably creak.

The most expensive electronic item that often fails is heated seats, for which you will have to pay a considerable amount of money. Problems often occur with the stove, the motor of which may fail. Also, at approximately 50 thousand km, the resistor breaks, accompanied by a not strong, but unpleasant whistle. The heat sensor in the cabin also suffers, but only in versions with cruise control. Also, due to Russian winters, the heating threads of the side mirrors suffer. In restyled cars it is quite difficult to change the bulbs in the headlights, since to do this you have to take out the entire headlight.

Focus has four engine options: 1.4; 1.6; 1.8; 2.0 liters. Let's look at each one separately:

1) 1.4 liter engines, by themselves, are durable and reliable (if you regularly change the oil and filter in them), but it is better to install a manual in the configuration, because it definitely won’t run on an automatic. But one problem arises from this - due to the fact that the engine always spins at high speeds (it will not run at low speeds, because it has little power), the engine's life is quickly depleted. Therefore, when purchasing a car from third or more hands, you should think carefully, because there is a risk of getting the engine overhauled;

2) 1.6 liters (100 hp) - this engine, like the 1.4, is considered durable and reliable (also don’t forget to change consumables). Its main advantage is its simplicity of design, so you can repair the engine yourself. But today the engine power is very low. And if you take it together with an automatic, then you definitely won’t have enough dynamics.

1.6 liter (115 hp) - this engine model will be better than its predecessor 100 hp engine, and you can already drive with an automatic transmission with almost the same gas consumption. It is distinguished only by the added variable valve timing system, both on the intake and exhaust shafts. This motor has a problem with the phase shifter clutch, which quickly "runs out", but on later and improved models this problem occurs less frequently.

3) The 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines are almost identical in design and their problems are also similar. The service life of such motors is 350 thousand km. What needs to be changed? The most important thing is the timing chain (200 thousand km), and the gasket between the head and the block (100 thousand km), otherwise oil loss from the engine begins. You also need to frequently monitor the tightening of the bolts, otherwise they will unscrew due to vibrations.

This car has three transmission options, and each has its own pros and cons, let's look at each:

1) The IB5 manual transmission is not very good, it has a lot of problems and they are not very pleasant. The most common is second gear overshoot. All this happens due to weak synchronizers. But due to the fact that the gearbox will often work at full capacity, the pinion axis in the differential may burst, and all these actions will subsequently lead to a hole in the crankcase, the repair of which will be expensive. There are also problems with the input shaft bearing, if you hear a hum from the gearbox, then run to the service center, because... This will not lead to good consequences, but only to difficult and expensive repairs.

2) The MTX75 manual transmission gives more love and hope because it is more durable. Its disadvantages are the oil seals and shift rod seals, but this is all easy to do. It is also better to monitor the oil; it should not be at a minimum, otherwise the shafts and gear rims quickly wear out and become unusable. You also need to monitor the release bearing, which is very weak and wears out after 50 thousand km.

3) The 4F27E automatic transmission is very reliable, because it has been installed on cars since 1980, and all the bugs in it have long been corrected, which is why this automatic transmission is as reliable as a tank. Only one thing spoils the picture - after 55 thousand km. It is advisable to change the valve body and also need to replace the pressure regulator solenoids.

As I said before, the Focus has an excellent suspension, which was inherited from the first generation. The suspension is reliable and rarely breaks, all this is due to the excellent tuning of the independent chassis, but still some elements fail and need to be replaced. The most basic, short-lived elements:

  1. Support bearings of struts. To 40-70 thousand km. They become unusable and require replacement. The wheel bearing, which only comes complete with the hub, also requires attention.
  2. After 40 thousand, a quiet knock may appear, which means that the stabilizer struts have become unusable.
  3. At 80-110 thousand kilometers you will need to change the bushings and with them: ball joints, levers and silent blocks. After all this, you will need to pay attention to the shock absorbers.

After replacing these parts, your suspension will be as beautiful as the car that came off the production line.

In conclusion, about the shortcomings of the 2nd generation Ford Focus.

Our “office plankton machine” is not even bad. For a simple guy, it is quite suitable, although it has some disadvantages, but if you follow these disadvantages, then everything will be fine. Of course, you won’t be able to buy a new car, but when buying second-hand, you need to check all the listed weak points.

P.S.: Dear car owners, if you have noticed systematic breakdowns of any parts or units of this model, please report it in the comments below.
