Over the past few years, I have worked hard on creating new models, releasing several different options to the public, but one of the most important updates, of course, was the new model Ford Focus fourth generation.

Ford probably could not have updated the previous generation for several more years, sales were so good. Consider for yourself: more than 158 thousand copies were sold in the USA alone last year Focus models. During the same time, several hundred thousand more models of this brand were sold around the world. Such results can be the envy of many automakers. For example, in 2017, the total sales of Lada cars amounted to 311 thousand units.

From here we conclude: the American model is still relevant both in terms of technical and external data, that is, it quite suits car enthusiasts in terms of the main characteristics that are vital for the sale and promotion of the product. Moreover, sales of the model of the first two generations were also high: in 2012, Ford sold almost 246 thousand cars in the home market, and the first restyling of the first generation sold an incredible 286 thousand units in the States alone.

So why was it necessary to update an already successful one? Perhaps a visual comparison of the two generations will answer this question. As they say, let's put them side by side and compare.

Revolution, not evolution


In terms of redesign, Ford chose a revolutionary approach rather than an evolutionary one. The photo shows that this is clearly a Ford Focus, but it is also noticeable to the naked eye that it is completely new. Moreover, not only the appearance, but also the concept as a whole has changed.

The automaker apparently really wanted to do more, but did not go that route. A change in its proportions made it possible to compensate for the lack of increase in the length and width of the body. Thanks to the updated design of the “living” part of the car, the new model received an elongated hood, which gives it a sporty, “pumped up” look. More eye-catching elements, more ornate recesses, thickenings, extensions.

Such a careful restructuring of the model still made it possible to obtain a more spacious interior and expand the usable space for the cargo compartment. Entering/exiting the car will be easier and more convenient.




A few more words about the shape of the model. Ford did a very good job on her appearance. The sheet metal has received such ornate improvements that it is simply impossible not to notice them. The dynamic silhouette, coupled with the sophistication of the details, distinguishes the new generation from the old square, streamlined model. Where the third generation had only featureless angles and sharp, chisel-like creases, the new generation hatchback offers beautiful soft lines with stunning style.

The new “face” is dominated by a large trapezoidal false radiator grille. The lower bumper vents vary in style depending on the trim level offered, but even on the base trim they look wider and more aggressive than those on the 2017 model. The headlights are slimmer, more refined, and better frame the longer hood. The sides are more sculpted, especially from the rear three-quarter view. The car looks clearly more upscale than it is positioned on the mass market. All of the above is especially noticeable in cars with premium trim levels, which are more reminiscent of or than a budget hatchback.

It would be impossible to call the model victorious if internally, from a technical point of view, the latest developments in the automotive industry were not applied to it.




The updated, high-quality exterior flows gently into the interior, where the Focus has been carefully redesigned for the modern automotive era. Instead of vertical orientation central panel made of black soft plastic - a new panel, divided into wide horizontal pieces, with a mix of different materials, as is done in more luxurious cars. More variations on the theme of the new Ford Focus are on the way

Ford has already demonstrated new Focus in a five-door hatchback and station wagon version, also showing four trim levels: Active, ST-Line, Titanium and Vignale. All these trim levels will in the future be switched to the sedan version, which, judging by the license plate, will be the first to arrive on the Chinese market. The new Focus sedan has completely adopted the style of the hatch with the only difference: the classic shapes are much more clearly visible in it.


And also on a new concept - an elevator “all-terrain” version of the car, which will be offered as a replacement for simple crossovers.


Sports, powerful versions are being prepared - ST and RS. Their technical data has not yet been disclosed, but, presumably, we will be talking about at least 300 hp. With. under the hood and 4-5 seconds of acceleration to the first hundred.

At the beginning of 2018, the updated 4th generation Ford Focus was officially announced in the markets of Europe and China. This time, the German division of the company was involved in the development of the car. But let's be honest. It is impossible to say that the company’s specialists managed to achieve any outstanding results. The Ford Focus 4 will sell successfully, but will not go down in automotive history.

Designers and marketers had to make a number of compromises in order to create worthy competition in the market. But you will learn more about everything further.

Car appearance

With each new version, the car lost its rounded shapes, leaning more and more towards chopped and more rapid lines. In the 4th generation Ford Focus, this solution reached its apogee. If in profile you can still perceive continuity with previous versions, then in front they are completely different cars, from a different price category.

The appearance of the new Ford Focus 4 has become more aggressive and expensive, with the expectation that this model will be popular among young people. The company’s specialists managed to achieve such dramatic changes thanks to the new exclusive C2 platform. It presented several modifications at once: a sedan, a station wagon, a 3- and 5-door hatchback, as well as a cross-version.

The front part of the car has undergone huge changes. You can see them in the photo of Ford Focus 4. The designers retained the idea of ​​​​dividing the radiator grille into two parts, but radically redesigned it. Instead of a small slot with chrome inserts, a massive diamond-shaped false grille is now installed in the upper part. It is worth noting that the pattern on it may vary depending on the body type you choose. Thus, in the sedan and station wagon versions, the grille is covered with long horizontal chrome strips (as was the case in previous versions), while the hatchback and cross-version have honeycomb-shaped cells instead (previously, a similar solution could be found in the racing modification ST-R), and the premium The Vignale equipment received wavy chrome stripes.

Also at the presentation of the car, quite a lot of attention was paid to the lower air intake of the bumper. Now it not only acts as a decorative element, but also serves as an aerodynamic shield. It distributes oncoming air flow, preventing turbulence in the rear axle and tunnel, thereby improving passive noise insulation, and also improves cooling of the front calipers, which reduces their wear and increases performance during active driving.

Looking at the photographs of the Ford Focus 4, you can see how much the bumper itself has undergone major changes. Externally, it has become more massive, but at the same time the designers have made every effort to improve its streamlining. Instead of the usual forms, we see complex curves and sweeping lines. The sections for the fog lights stand out clearly against the general background, along the edges of which there are real air intakes, and not dummies, as can often be seen in this price segment.

The latest Ford Focus 4 actively supports a new direction in design, namely the elimination of abundant chrome elements. Therefore, on the front of the car it can only be found in the exclusive Vignale trim level, sedan and station wagon. But even so, these will be minor elements, in the form of chrome stripes on the radiator grille or fog lamp surrounds.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the optics. In my own way appearance and its functionality is almost the same as that installed on the latest Volvo hatchbacks. It may not be original, but the double-decker headlights fit perfectly into the overall sporty design, but more importantly, they perform their function perfectly.

The front view of the Ford Focus 4 has undergone far fewer changes, but they are also striking. The designers tried to visually expand the arches and add sporty “muscle” to the car. They more than succeeded. From the side the car looks no less aggressive than from the front. The glazing line has also changed. It has a teardrop shape, which visually narrows the roof as it approaches the trunk. Thus, the car appears lower, which again should emphasize its sporty orientation.

Fans will also be surprised by the new wheels on the Ford Focus 4. First of all, they are large: 17 inches in the base and up to 19 inches in the maximum configuration. Looking at them, it immediately becomes clear that their development, like the car as a whole, was carried out by the German division. In terms of their design, they largely repeat the popular BMW wheels of previous models with minor modifications.

Now about what awaits us in the “loin” part of the car. Pursuing the general style, it became more “pumped up” and received many aerodynamic bends. The rear window is noticeably smaller, in particular due to the enlarged spoiler visor. The exception, perhaps, is the sedan version, where the glazing line has grown considerably.

The rear optics, instead of a smooth teardrop shape, received a strict, sporty design, with the same angular backlight pattern. A similar solution can be found in almost all competitors in the segment and it looks really good. The bumper became wider and almost completely lost its smooth transitions. Most of it is covered with matte plastic and a powerful splitter. Along its edges there are additional brake lights trapezoidal shape. On the right is the forked tip of the exhaust system.

In general, the design of the new product turned out to be successful. Although the car has lost a bit of its former originality, it looks quite interesting and not boring in its price segment.

Salon and interior

To say that the interior of the new Ford Focus 4 has changed would be completely wrong. It has been completely redesigned and for many, these innovations will appeal. Previously, motorists, including fans of the model, blamed the previous generation for the Kinetic Design interior, or rather, for its inappropriate bulkiness and futurism. It has been replaced by minimalism, which is popular today.

Center panel and console

The most noticeable changes have been made to the front panel and center console. So, they have become significantly smaller and no longer take up so much free space, at least visually. The front panel itself is divided into three conventional levels. At the very top there is a classic instrument panel, a large (as much as 8 inches in the maximum configuration) multimedia screen and a minimal set of keys responsible for controlling the multimedia system.

By the way, the latter has acquired support for Apple Car Play and Android Auto. To the delight of orthodox drivers, the instrument panel is classic; the company’s engineers are not yet ready to offer electronic analogues in this price segment. Instead, you can make do with a projection screen.

At the second level of the front panel there are now a minimum of elements: control of electric window lifts at the edges of the doors, a classic set of headlight adjustments and a small climate control panel with two analog displays.

Well, at the very bottom you will find a miniature central panel compared to the previous generation. Now there is enough space on it to place your phone and a lot of other necessary things. The automatic transmission selector, familiar to many, was replaced with a washer. This solution may take some getting used to, but it looks very stylish and organic. In addition to the washer, the panel contains control buttons for electronic assistants (during descent, ascent and even off-road), a set of necessary connectors (AUX, USB, wireless charging for a smartphone), as well as an electronic handbrake. In all this update, the only element untouched was the steering wheel.

Decoration Materials

After Korean cars The interior of the Ford Focus 4 will seem like a breath of fresh air. And no, we’re not talking about design here, in this particular issue it’s a complete copy of modern Hyundai and KIA, we’re talking about the materials used.

All interior elements with which you interact are made of high quality plastic. It is quite soft and has a pleasant texture. In some trim levels, the upper part of the central panel is stylized in leather with stitching. Without looking closely at the details, it will be difficult to distinguish such a dummy. And in the case of the expensive Vignale package, some interior elements are actually covered with genuine leather, and decorative inserts are made of aluminum.

The new 4th generation Ford Focus boasts premium finishing materials for soft elements. Here you have a choice: high-quality fabric made of proprietary technology, a combination of materials (fabric + leather), full leather trim, Alcantara (only in the Vignale package). It is worth noting that there are much more “soft” elements in the car than we are used to. In addition to the seats, similar inserts can be found on the armrest, door panels and even along the edges of the center console.

Ergonomics and visibility

As mentioned above, the company abandoned the old Kinetic Design design, and they entrusted the development of a new one to German engineers. Therefore, as expected, the result satisfies everyone modern requirements consumers.

The controls are now divided into several groups: multimedia, climate control, suspension and transmission, optics and ESP. It’s impossible to get lost in them, but more importantly, they are all in familiar places and a couple of hours’ drive is enough to get used to them.

The new Ford Focus 4 body received a more extensive glazing line. The A-pillars have become noticeably thinner and the center console has become smaller. All this had a beneficial effect on visibility. Now the car has become even easier to drive.

As for the seats, Ford has again borrowed design cues from Volvo, adding "innovative" headrests and special seatbacks. How did this affect them? Reliable lateral fixation, correct fit, and the presence of all adjustments, which already become electronic from the middle configuration, only made them better.

Innovations will be noticeable not only to the driver, but also to passengers. Due to the new platform, the car has become noticeably more spacious. At the rear, passengers have as much as 50 mm of additional legroom and 60 mm of shoulder room, as well as 30 mm of height. The inclination of the backrest has been noticeably increased, as has the length of the “cushion” under the feet.

Well, in the end it’s worth talking about the luggage compartment. In the classic versions of the sedan and hatchback, it remains virtually unchanged, but for fans of the Ford Focus 4 station wagon, a slight modification awaits. The trunk has become higher, wider and longer by a couple of centimeters, but more importantly, the loading height has decreased by almost 5 centimeters. Regarding the equipment, it has everything you need: 12V connector, curtain, optional dog net. There were some innovations. The rear seats are now equipped with an Easy Fold system. According to the developers, it can help you fold the back row faster and easier.

Control and comfort

Due to the fierce competition in the segment, it is becoming increasingly difficult to stand out through design or equipment. But in this case, American marketers and German engineers focused on handling and comfort. The old platform has completely exhausted itself and has been replaced by new body Ford Focus 4 marked C2. Compared to its predecessor, its wheelbase has increased by 54 cm, and rigidity has improved by as much as 20%. How did this affect the car?

The car has become tougher. This is especially noticeable on the Ford Focus 4 hatchback model. Handling has improved. The response to steering inputs is almost instantaneous. This, of course, is not yet a sports car indicator, but it is significantly superior to competitors in the segment. The car takes turns at almost any adequate speed. Electronic stabilization systems provide significant assistance in driving.

As for the smoothness of the ride, you can feel it in the Ford Focus 4 sedan and station wagon. There, the chassis system is less compressed and handles minor irregularities much better. In addition, the extended wheelbase plays a huge role. You will still experience strong bumps, cobblestones and speed bumps. In other situations, you can move around with relative comfort.

There is sound insulation in the car and it copes with its function almost perfectly. Perhaps it will be missed in winter, while driving on studded tires, but similar shortcomings also occur in more expensive cars.

You can safely go on long trips with the Ford Focus 4 station wagon. The huge trunk and torquey engines contribute to this. As mentioned above, the seating position in the car is well thought out. The driver can safely drive hundreds of kilometers without feeling tired. But the back row may be a little disappointing for those who like to travel in a large group. The rear sofa has pronounced lateral support, and therefore the third passenger will have to sit on the resulting hillock. But for driving four people the car is perfect.

In general, if you read reviews of the Ford Focus 4 from European motorists, you can easily understand that the car has risen one step higher and is now much better associated with the European C-Class.

It may surprise many that a typical city car is tested off-road. The reason for this decision is new equipment Ford Focus 4 cross. It is made in accordance with all popular trends: body kit made of ABS plastic, increased ground clearance, front-wheel drive and a wide range of various electronic assistants. What is the result of such a transformation?

Let's be honest, the car is in no way suitable for real off-road use. But with such tasks as a trip to the country or nature along a country road, he is more than good at it. The car also copes well on snowy roads, which is quite significant in the Russian climate.

These figures are not surprising. German engineers did not just lift the car, but actually worked on its chassis. This time, the engineers did not stretch the old “trolley” and increase the plastic body kits, as many in this segment do, but completely changed the platform. According to the engineers themselves, the new modular design of the C2 has become the most modern development of the brand, and in the future it can be found in other models. What has changed?   • Width – 1825 mm;
  • Height – 1454/1480 mm;
  • Curb weight – 1383 kg, which is 88 kg less than its predecessor;
  • Wheelbase – 2701 mm, which is 53 mm longer than its predecessor;
  • Trunk volume – 375/1354 l hatchback, 608/1650 station wagon;
  • Volume fuel tank– 50 liters;
  • Tire size – 205/60 R16 (for Europe only), 215/50 R17, 235/40 R18, 245/30 R19;
  • Ground clearance – 155 mm in basic version, 185 mm in the Active configuration and 145 in the Vignale/ST-Line version.

Other equally important indicators include the drag coefficient. For the sedan it is only 0.250, while for the Ford Focus 4 station wagon, hatchback and cross version it is 0.273.

The new body uses modern alloys of aluminum, steel, and composite materials. In total, this made it possible to increase body rigidity by 20%, and the reliability of subframe fastening to an incredible 50%. Also, the Ford Focus 4 sedan model managed to pass a crash test. Indicators, in comparison with the previous generation, have improved by 40% in a frontal collision and by 35% in a side collision. All thanks to the addition of new stiffeners and predictable crush zones.

Characteristics of Ford Focus 4: transmission and internal combustion engine

As is already known, along with the C2 platform, the new product received a number of new power units, as well as a completely redesigned automatic transmission. There were some innovations here, but let's start in order.

Ford Focus 4 engines:

  • 1.0 EcoBoost – 1-liter three-cylinder petrol engines. Power will vary between 85, 100 and 125 hp. depending on the configuration and country of sale;
  • 1.5 EcoBoost – petrol four-cylinder power units with a volume of one liter. Power can also be varied between 150 and 182 hp;
  • 1.5 EcoBlue – diesel four-cylinder internal combustion engine with a volume of 1.5 liters. Depending on the configuration, the maximum power will be 95 or 120 hp. The more powerful version has a torque of 300 Nm and is achieved at 2000 rpm. The younger one in the same conditions can offer only 250 Nm;
  • 2.0 EcoBlue - diesel four-cylinder internal combustion engine with a volume of 2.0 liters. Maximum power 150 hp and 350 N.m at 2000 RPM.

All of the engines presented above have from one to two turbines. Gasoline models are also equipped with a system for changing the phases of the gas rotation mechanism. The youngest version, 1.0 EcoBoost, received a unique cylinder deactivation technology for the company and this segment. It allows you to turn off one of the cylinders when there is no need for full power. Switching on and off occurs in 14 milliseconds.

Now regarding diesel power units. They are equipped with new steel pistons and low-energy turbines. Also, they use AdBlue technology (adding urea to fuel), which is familiar to the European market. That is why models with diesel engines will not be supplied to the Russian market.

We should expect that for the CIS countries a naturally-aspirated engine with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 85 and 120 hp, which we have already seen in previous generations, will be added.

Now about the transmission. Due to numerous customer complaints, the company's engineers decided to temporarily abandon robotic box PowerShift gears. It was replaced by an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission of the ZF brand. Good news for mechanical enthusiasts too. It can be found in many trim levels, excluding the maximum. The company's engineers offer a proprietary 6-speed manual transmission with a fork mechanism.

If you study the latest Ford Focus 4 news, you will find out that the car will now be equipped with a rear multi-link independent suspension, but only in rich trim levels and cross-versions. The rest will have to be content with a classic beam at the rear and MacPherson strut at the front.

Prices and options

The model has been sold in Europe and China for some time, and prices for the Ford Focus 4 in Russia are already known. So fans of the model can already rub their hands.

Ford Focus 4 configurations (prices in Euro):

  • basic version with manual transmission and 1.0 liter engine. – 18,700;
  • intermediate version Special Edition with automatic transmission and 1.5 liter engine. – 25 300;
  • sports equipment ST-Line with automatic transmission and 1.5 liter. - 29,700;
  • Focus Active crossover with 1.0 engine and manual transmission – from 25,400;
  • premium version of Vignale with 1.5 l. ICE and automatic transmission – from 32,000.

Now, as for the other versions. The basic Ford Focus 4 wagon starts at 19,900 euros, and in the Special Edition the price rises to 24,900. But in both cases you get a liter engine and automatic transmission. A sedan with the same configuration will cost 500 euros less. Models with a 1.5 liter power unit start at 26,000 and 26,500 euros for a sedan and station wagon, respectively. The price of a Ford Focus 4 with diesel engines starts from 22,000 euros. But you shouldn’t count on their appearance on the domestic market. At least those stated in European and Chinese specifications.

Choosing a used car

To evaluate new Ford Focus 4, and to predict its further advantages and disadvantages, you can look at past generations of the car. Moreover, the sales date of Ford Focus 4 is already known, and many Russian motorists who were previously owners of previous generations are waiting for the appearance of the new product. Therefore, soon, many interesting used cars will appear on the market that you can consider buying.

First generation. These are quite affordable and simple options. When purchasing them, first of all you should pay attention to the condition of the body. Many cars are more than 15 years old; corrosion and accidents have taken their toll. With engines everything is much simpler. It is not recommended to consider diesel versions, as well as 1.4-liter gasoline versions, for purchase. The best option would be models with 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines.

Second generation. One of the most popular on secondary market. Choose a good option won't be difficult. Just like in the previous case, start with the body. Local touch-ups are not scary. But the car after serious Accident is better bypass. Same with engines. It is better not to consider small volume and diesel versions. Optimal power units start at 1.6 liters. The best option would be 2.0 liter gasoline engine. Regarding the transmission, the manual and automatic transmissions are reliable, but the robotic versions have a bad reputation.

Third generation. It is divided into pre-restyling and restyling. As a result, there are much more of the former on the market. But they have the same problems. More precisely, there is only one – the Powershift preselective robotic gearbox. Cars with it can be rented only with low mileage and only if you know the history of the car well. In other cases, it is better to avoid such modifications. Otherwise, the car has no critical problems.

How do you know if a car is of interest to buyers? As soon as the release date of Ford Focus 4 in Russia was announced, thousands of drivers were already interested in the car. Salon Focus 4 underwent major modernization. The instrument panel now does not have wells, but is an ordinary pointer and unremarkable. It’s worth noting the new head-up display. In the center console (after changing the entire dashboard architecture) an overhanging 8-inch touchscreen monitor (already in the base) appeared. Thanks to the increased wheelbase, it was possible to make the car a little more spacious.
