Connecting a rear view camera to the radio with your own hands. Installing a rear view camera on a car with your own hands Installing the camera step by step

If you don't already have a rear view camera on your Duster, then you should read this review sent by our reader Andrey K. In his review, the owner of Renault Duster presented a photo report on installing a rear view camera with his own hands and a number of tips:

  • Where to buy a rear view camera
  • Monitor for rear view camera
  • How to install the camera yourself
  • How to connect the camera.

I purchased new Renault Duster in 2014 in the dealer's showroom. Naturally, rear view cameras ( KVZ) was not available at the time. Now in the new Duster a KVZ is installed with an output to the monitor of the standard multimedia system, but those who have a Duster from 2012 to 2014 have to solve the problem of installing the rear camera themselves.

Some time after the purchase, I wondered where to buy a rear view camera? And which one is better to choose? Having scoured the Internet, I decided on a camera that is put in place rear light license plate lights. I found such a camera in an online store Aliexpress at a price of 1218 rubles, I ordered it. The parcel arrived in about 20 days. By the way, buying goods on Aliexpress from Russia has become much easier, because there you can pay both with a card and with Qiwi and WebMoney electronic wallets. I pay using Qiwi, it’s very convenient, in Svyaznoy communication stores you can deposit the required amount into your wallet through the terminal without commission, and Aliexpress now accepts payments in rubles.

So, I received the camera pretty quickly. What was in the package:

Camera Specifications:

But in addition to the camera, I also need a monitor, which I started choosing after paying for the camera and waiting for the parcel.

Monitor for rear view camera

As you may have guessed, I also found the monitor and ordered it on Aliexpress for 1875 rubles. The package with the monitor arrived 10 days later than the camera. I received this device:

I liked the monitor, large diagonal, ability to connect 2 cameras! To be honest, since you can connect 2 cameras to the monitor, in addition to the rear view camera, I also ordered a second camera in a metal case as a side camera, but I still haven’t installed it on the Duster. If I install it, I’ll write back with a photo report.

In the meantime, here's monitor specifications, if anyone is interested:

Installing a rear view camera with your own hands

Installing a rear view camera on a Duster should not pose any particular difficulties. Before installation, you need to remove the rear license plate light. It can be removed easily, just press on the side with a screwdriver, pry it up and pull it out. We disconnect the wires from the light bulb in the lantern; you can insulate the terminals on the wires with electrical tape, since we will no longer need them.

We try on the video camera in the empty window, if it fits, we proceed to installation. The first step is to tuck the cable for the camera inside the tailgate. This is done easily, you need to unscrew two bolts (with a Torx key) on the plastic cover, remove it and access from the inside is ready.

I connected the camera to the right reverse light so that when switching to reverse, the camera would also turn on at the same time.

The advantage of the chosen camera model was that the cable was long enough to connect to the monitor, but the power cable was a bit short, so I had to lengthen it with two pieces of stranded copper wire. The spliced wires were connected using adhesive tape (what is "Scotch locks" , ).

It is better to start pulling the power cable and video cable from the rear view camera. I didn’t bother to completely hide the cable inside the door and in one place where the cables are connected by connectors, I laid the cable outside along the glass, securing it with double-sided tape ( see above). Some will say that it is unaesthetic, but it is simple, and who will look there later?

The cable is hidden along the entire path in the gap between the headliner, between the plastic upholstery and the body. I connected the power wires to the reverse lamp in the right lamp. I didn’t take anything apart, I just connected to the wires from the lamp using tape locks - what a convenient thing! (how to connect to power in the rear light,).

After laying the cables, we connect the camera itself and place it in the socket. Since the camera did not have a rubber gasket, I placed it on a transparent liquid sealant to prevent moisture from getting inside.

How to connect a rear view camera?

When I finished connecting the camera's power, all that remained was to connect the video cable to the monitor. Before this, I laid the power cable and video cable together, but now we pull the video independently to the front panel, where the monitor will be. It turned out to be easy to install the video cable; I hid it in the gap between the ceiling and the rubber seal all the way to the front door, and then ran the cable into the glove compartment. All that remains is to connect the monitor.

The monitor itself has wiring for connecting a reverse signal so that the monitor automatically turns on when driving in reverse. And there is a button to turn on the monitor manually. I decided to turn it on manually, so I only needed to connect power to the monitor and video:

I powered the monitor from a standard cigarette lighter, simply plugging the plug from the monitor into it. Additionally, what I had to do was buy a tee for the cigarette lighter so that I could also turn on the parking sensors and the air ionizer in the Duster’s cabin.

In principle, that’s all, the only thing I have left “raw” is the monitor mount, I keep it in the glove compartment, and when necessary I take it out and put it on the front panel.

I think you need to buy a regular bracket with a suction cup and stick it to the glass, it will be more convenient (while I was writing a review, I bought this bracket):

And one more nuance that I discovered after the complete installation. It turned out that the rear view camera sits too deep and its view is cut off by ¼ from the top. Of course, you can try to make a thicker gasket so that the camera sticks out more from under the back panel, but there is no time to do this yet. Otherwise, the rear view camera suits me.

DVR or action camera – which is better to choose?

Modern passenger car models are equipped with parking sensors. Therefore, many drivers believe that installing a rear view camera is a waste of money. After all, the manufacturer has already taken care of safety. However, such equipment allows you to avoid unpleasant situations. After another collision with a pole or tree while parking, many car owners begin to think about purchasing such a useful accessory. In fact, installing a rear view camera is a simple process. You can do it yourself. The main thing is to choose the right accessory.

What to pay attention to

Before purchasing a rear view camera, you should pay special attention to the characteristics of the product. After all, some of them may only be an addition to a GPS navigator. If the device will be used very often and over a long period, you should not try to save on such accessories. As a rule, the relatively low cost hides poor quality.

When choosing an accessory, you should pay special attention to its characteristics:

  1. Black and white or color photography.
  2. Does it work in the dark?
  3. What viewing angles does it have?
  4. Are there parking markings?
  5. Is there protection for the lens from moisture, and what material is the camera made of?
  6. Video recording resolution.

Where should it be installed?

Installing a rear view camera usually begins with choosing a location. Installation of such accessories is usually carried out in the license plate light located at the rear. There are kits that are equipped with special lampshades with a special place for the camera. Before deciding where the accessory will be installed, it is worth answering a few questions:

  1. How often does this part of the vehicle get dirty? For example, it is permitted to install a rear view camera on trucks directly on the roof. In this case, the accessory is protected from dirt, but at the same time it will be much more difficult to wipe it.
  2. Which shooting angle is your priority? Tilt of the camera allows you to see those areas that are difficult to see in mirrors. But at the same time, experts recommend choosing the installation location so that all objects on the monitor look more natural.
  3. Is it possible to install the device so that it is not visible to prying eyes and does not spoil the appearance of the car?

Installing a rear view camera, the price of which ranges from 1,500 to 8,500 rubles, can cause some difficulties. If you doubt your own abilities, you should seek help from specialists.

Rear view camera installation: connection

The camera must be powered from the vehicle's network. Such accessories consume approximately 12 V. Finding a wire with this voltage will not be difficult. But in this case, you will have to dismantle all the parts that do not allow you to reach the necessary cable leading specifically to the license plate illumination. As a rule, in such situations, you have to remove the plastic trim and thresholds in the trunk, which hide the wiring coming from the car radio. The camera must be connected to it so that you can get the image on the monitor. In fact, the installation diagram for the rear view camera is quite simple and understandable. Installation does not cause any particular difficulties.

The camera is connected to the positive cable and the radio connector. Of course, the part will need to be removed. Then you need to find the connector where all the wires are collected, thanks to which the license plate is illuminated. This is not always required. This is only necessary in cases where the installation of a rear view camera, the price of which depends on many characteristics, is carried out in the backlight. If desired, the accessory can be connected to the wires of the reversing lights, in the area of the dashboard. The main thing is that the wire has a positive charge to power the camera.

Final stage

After connecting the camera, you should check its functionality. When you engage reverse gear, the device should turn on automatically. If the image appears, then everything is connected correctly. All that remains is to lay the wires - and the installation of a standard rear view camera will be completed. There is nothing complicated in this matter. This requires a little patience and accuracy.

It is worth laying the wiring so that it is protected from moisture and mechanical damage. To do this, you should use the original clips and lay the cables only in those places that are provided in the vehicle specifically for such purposes.

For novice drivers, a rear view camera is a great way to learn how to park correctly and feel the dimensions of the car. To install a rear view camera, you can contact specialists at a service center or install it yourself.

This function is called Parktronic, and is now installed on almost all models at the factory. But if it is not installed, you can install it yourself.

To do this, you just need to follow the instructions and everything will work out.

Selecting a camera model

The choice depends on what image quality you want to see on your monitor. Also, the main criterion by which you should choose a camera is the presence of a flashlight. This is necessary so that when parking at night you can see all the obstacles on the way. Also, before buying a device, you need to decide for yourself what it will be like:

  • image color. What kind of picture will you see on the monitor - black and white or color;
  • online shooting in the dark and in poorly lit places;
  • viewing angle;
  • quality of the transmitted picture;
  • shockproof and waterproof housing;
  • presence of parking zone markings.

Before buying a camera, decide for yourself based on the criteria listed above. If you already know approximately which model you will purchase, then be sure to read reviews about it.

Installing a rear view camera

Like any action, installation must be done in stages. In fact, there is nothing complicated. So, let's take a closer look:

Important! When purchasing a camera and its accessories, buy a little more wiring than you need. This will help you route the wires in the best way and, if necessary, take the device to another unplanned installation location.

Where to install

It is best to install the equipment in a place where it will be least exposed and almost invisible. This will protect it both from contamination and from the actions of intruders. As a rule, the camera is installed above the license plate, sometimes along the perimeter of the bumper. On some car models you can see round holes covered with plastic on the rear bumper. More than one camera can be mounted into these holes. Everything directly depends on the car model. So, on the Audi Q 7, the rear view camera can be installed under the trunk lid, above the license plate. Most models allow you to install the gadget above the number. Some drivers also mount the device on the trunk lid. In this case, you may need more wiring than you expected. But if your machine has a ready-made solution for installing the device, it is better to use it.

Equipment cost

The cost of this device varies from 1500 to 6000 rubles. depending on the model, functions, manufacturer and country of assembly. It is better to purchase a camera from a trusted manufacturer, without overpaying for the brand. Be sure to pay attention to the presence of a warranty card and a complete set of necessary parts for installation.

How to display the camera on the radio screen

To display the camera on the radio screen, firstly, the radio itself must be equipped with a display and support video formats. If your radio does not have these functions, then you can purchase a rear view mirror that is already equipped with a built-in screen.

So, we connect the device to the monitor. To do this correctly, you must first of all carefully read the equipment instructions. Sometimes radio tape recorders have several inputs for camera plugs, in which case you need to navigate by color. Typically, the input to the radio is located on the rear wall. In order to connect the device, you will have to remove the music player.

After you have connected the monitor and video camera, you need to connect the radio back to the network and insert it into place. Remember that the wire with a negative charge must be connected to the ground of the car in the most accessible place, i.e. it must be grounded, and the wire with a positive charge must be connected to the rear view light. Typically, the power wire for this light is located near the gearbox.

You can also display the camera on the mirror screen. To do this, you will need to connect the mirror itself to the wiring in the car and carefully route the wires. This can be done along the ceiling and down to the driver’s seat, hiding it behind the dashboard. When purchasing such a mirror, be sure to pay attention to device compatibility. It is advisable that they be from the same manufacturer.

Important! Instructions will be included with the camera. Read it very carefully and follow it. Incorrect connection of the camera and its further use can burn not only the radio and camera, but also all the wiring in the car.

Installation Features

There are not so many connection features. All devices are connected as standard, regardless of the model. Remember that the device is powered by the rear light, so it must be connected to the wiring that goes to this light. So that you can more clearly see how to install a rear view camera on different cars, we suggest you watch a video for each model:

  • Kia Rio: ;
  • Hyundai Solaris: ;
  • Lada Granta, Largus: ;
  • Mazda: .

As a rule, the camera comes with very detailed instructions for installing it on different car models. If the installation principle is the same, then a number of car brands are indicated simply in a list, which is most often the case.

Important! If you are afraid to carry out the installation yourself, contact a specialist.

Installing a camera in a car repair shop

If you do not want to install a rear view camera yourself, but understand that you really need it, you can contact any service station, where qualified specialists will install it for a fee. The cost varies from 5,000 to 10,000 rubles. depending on the city and the auto repair shop. Regardless of the city, installation will be paid. Of course, it is much cheaper to install a rear view camera yourself.

That is why it is best to install a rear view camera yourself. Firstly, this will save you a significant amount of money, and secondly, you will be able to independently adjust the device in the future and set it at the angle that you need for successful parking.

Installing additional gadgets

When installing a rear view camera, some drivers also install washers for it. Let's look at the installation process, as this is a necessary device, especially in slushy conditions and off-road travel.

So, you will need:

  • a regular hose at least two meters long;
  • washer nozzle. It is not necessary to buy a new one; you can use an old one, for example, from any car, even a Russian one. But, if you still decide to buy a new one, then you can safely purchase an injector for any car produced by AvtoVAZ;
  • key to 10;
  • plastic straps;
  • tee for divorce;
  • drill and 6 mm drill bit.

The necessary material will not be expensive, you will definitely get it under 100 rubles. Next, the plan of action is the same as when installing the camera, so it is better to mount the camera and its washer at the same time.

So, we remove the casing, disconnect all the wiring in case the hose leaks, run the hose, put one end of it into the rear view camera hole, install a nozzle on the hose, fix it, install a tee for water supply and you're done! This procedure may take 1.5-2.5 hours, but your camera will always be clean and the image clear.

If you install the device in a car repair shop, then you can immediately ask them to install the washer; it won’t take much time from the specialists.

Modern technologies

Wireless rear view cameras have appeared relatively recently. Installation of such a device does not require kilometers of wires or dismantling of the casing. To install such a camera, you need to turn on Bluetooth on the camera and turn it on on the radio so that the device can pick up the signal and display the picture. Despite the fact that technology does not stand still, in this case it is better not to give up on wires; they will ensure uninterrupted operation of the camera for a very long time.

27.01.2017

In the bustle of the city, a huge flow of cars and people, mirrors are not always effective enough and there is a need to install a rear view camera. This device allows you to increase the visibility for the driver, thereby preventing possible problems on the road. You can install the camera yourself, saving money. Installing the camera will not be difficult.

Choosing a camera

Everything will depend on personal preferences and capabilities. Do you want an expensive camera from a well-known brand or is a mid-range device more suitable for you? Most importantly, be sure to take a warranty receipt, which will indicate a guarantee for at least a year. Of course, expensive does not mean the best, however, if possible, try to choose models that are not too cheap so that you feel more comfortable using a high-quality unit.

There are several types of cameras, namely two:

Wired device type

Wireless device type via Wi Fi

So, a wireless camera is easier to install, which means fewer wires - fewer problems, however, this type of camera is not always compatible with a radio, so it is better to consult a specialist on this issue.

Functionality necessary for comfortable use of the device:

Switching between color and black and white shooting modes

Image quality at night - matrix sensitivity

View up to 180 degrees

Lens protection

Water protection

Markings for easy parking

Choosing a location for installation

When choosing a location for installation, pay attention to the following points:

Is it susceptible to contamination?

How visible is your device from the side?

Is the shooting angle correct?

Is it convenient to care for the device: wash, wipe?

Some drivers install a camera in place of the rear license plate light bulb, and this is a very good option. It happens that the car already has a place for the camera. If the car is a truck, an acceptable option is the roof of the car. True, in this case it will not be very convenient to care for her.

When installed correctly, your device will cover inspection areas that mirrors cannot, which is undoubtedly very good for safety.

Installing the camera step by step

When you mount your camera yourself, it usually involves the following simple steps:

First you need to prepare the installation site

Then, mount the device in the prepared place

Connecting the camera to the reversing lamp

Connecting to a Monitor

Minor difficulties may arise with the wires. But they are usually neatly removed for a more aesthetic appearance.

How to install a camera in place of the license plate light

Some car models require the installation of a camera in place of the lamp, which illuminates the license plate. Then you need to proceed as follows:

Remove the rear door trim

Unscrew the screws from the handle

Detach the pistons trim

Remove the rear door connectors

Detach the trim on the rear door to mount the camera

Remove the license plate lamp

Mount your device there

Connect lighting elements with dimensions

Replace the outer trim

Connect the minus to the trunk lid

Connect the power wires to the reverse lamp

Increase the length of the wire going to the monitor by placing it in a corrugation with the rest of the wires

How to install a camera on a lighting panel

You can also place your camera below a light bulb. But this is very inconvenient and not aesthetically pleasing, since then the camera will be very noticeable against the background of the license plate. It is better to fix it on a plate with lighting lamps.

To do this, do the following:

Empty the trunk of its contents

Remove the license plate

If necessary, increase the length of the camera bracket

Make a hole for the lens

Route the camera wires through the trunk

Separate the left side of the trunk trim and the sill trim

Connect all wires following the instructions for the device

Connect the "plus" to the rear left headlight to provide power to the camera

Fasten the wires in the right place

Check the operation of the device. To do this, turn it back. If an image appears on the monitor, your camera is connected correctly.

Install all car parts into place

Installing the camera in place of the trunk lock

You can install your camera in the trunk lock location, provided that the shape of the camera allows it: the device itself is small, has a thread and looks like a door peephole.

Then proceed like this:

Install an electric lock

Remove the trunk lock

Install the camera by inserting it into the hole

Connect the wires

Test the operation of your device and adjust

Secure with a nut

This camera location has a number of advantages: it is less susceptible to contamination, almost invisible, and has a good viewing angle.

By installing the camera yourself, you will undoubtedly save your money, which is very nice. Also, the rear view camera justifies the money spent on its purchase by your comfort and greater safety of movement in any environmental conditions.

The authorities of Novosibirsk posted an application for the purchase of two Toyota Camry cars on the government procurement website.

The total cost of the cars should not exceed 5 million rubles. Thus, 2.5 million rubles will be allocated for the purchase of each car. The customer will be the economic department of the Novosibirsk City Hall.

Cars must be no older than 2019, painted black and equipped with an automatic transmission. In addition, each car should have additional driver assistance functions, which include: a rain sensor, a collision avoidance function, an advanced multimedia system, and so on.

According to customers, finding such machines will not be as difficult as it might seem. Thus, at the end of 2018, the necessary cars were purchased in three days. The city authorities annually update and replenish the fleet of vehicles, purchasing the necessary vehicles, which are subsequently used for the needs of the mayor’s office.

Russian enthusiasts showed on the Internet pictures of an unusual tuning of the domestic UAZ Hunter SUV, equipping it with a premium body kit to make the car stand out among other cars.

Motorists were delighted with the unique project and noted that they would like the production models to become the same.

After tuning, the UAZ Hunter acquired a body with a glossy black paint, as well as an unusual body kit that makes it look like its foreign counterparts. Motorists immediately compared the Russian model with the legendary Gelendvagen. The car received a black, powerful, reinforced bumper, the hood was stamped, and the windows were tinted.

The parking assistance system consists of two main components - a video camera (this is a kind of eye of the system) and a device with a display on which the image is displayed.

All car video cameras have a similar design: a set of lenses plus a light-sensitive matrix. They produce a color image of not very high quality - due to the peculiarities of video signal processing, the resolution usually does not exceed 0.3 megapixels. But this is quite enough to recognize a parking post or a pedestrian. It is better to install the camera higher: the view is wider and less dirty.

One of the options for its placement on station wagons, hatchbacks, crossovers, and vans is an additional brake light cover or cover. For this purpose, a mortise camera with latches or an external camera with a bracket is suitable. You need to adjust the “eye” so that the bottom part of the image on the screen includes the outermost element of your car - the bumper, tailgate or towbar ball.

If you don’t want to bother with installing the camera, buy a license frame with a built-in “eye”. However, this option is only suitable for cars on which the number plate is located high. If the registration plate is installed on the bumper, it is better to abandon the idea - from a half-meter height it is difficult to perceive what is happening, and besides, the peephole will constantly go blind. In order not to encounter “squint,” you should not install such a camera on cars where the number plate is offset from the center. These are, for example, vans with hinged doors and SUVs with side-opening doors. For many cars they offer video cameras combined with a license plate light. They are the easiest to install, they look aesthetically pleasing, but with similar characteristics they are more expensive than others.

Video system components

When selecting a camera, you should pay attention to the video signal standard - PAL or NTSC. The standards of the camera and display should not differ, otherwise, as they say, “there will be no cinema.”

Where to look?

We have chosen the camera - we go to the receiving devices, showing the image from the video camera. This could even be one that has a second (rear) camera and displays the image from it on its display. It’s just very difficult to see anything on such a small screen.

It’s another matter when the picture is displayed on a 2 DIN multimedia device (standard or installed additionally). It is usually equipped with a display with a diagonal of six to seven inches and allows you to connect a rear view camera. All that remains is to provide a signal to this device, and also inform it that reverse gear is engaged.

They also offer separate monitors with a screen diagonal of no more than five inches, which are mounted on the instrument panel. But a modern car’s front panel is already crammed with equipment. Therefore, another solution seems interesting, quite inexpensive (and compact): you can use it, which comes to life only when power and a video signal are supplied.

You need to connect two devices with a video cable. This task is quite troublesome, since the cable will have to be routed through a moving connection - an opening door or trunk lid. We recommend laying the cable under the roof trim: it is much easier than making your way along the thresholds of the car, where the non-standard cable may be subject to chafing.

A more convenient solution is to transmit the image over a radio channel. We purchase a so-called radio module. It receives power, as well as a video signal, from the camera and transmits it via radio frequency to the receiving device, which outputs the signal to the display. The radio module will cost one and a half thousand, but will save time during installation.

Practice

We purchased two video systems and tried installing them on . Its rear end gets dirty quickly, so one camera was placed at the top of the tailgate and the other behind the heated glass to look out through the wiper's area. The “glazed” camera was secured to the door flange with screw clamps, but you can simply glue it to the glass. The camera should be placed in the same manner on SUVs, crossovers and commercial vans with a nearly vertical tailgate.

The signal transmission from the video camera to the front of the car was organized through a radio module. The video camera and radio module can be powered from the reversing light. But in order not to pull the “positive” wire through the corrugation from the lamp to the door, we took power from the rear wiper motor. On its block there is a “minus” and a “plus”, which appears immediately when the ignition is turned on. The camera and transmitter will operate continuously as long as the ignition is turned on. There is no need to worry about the resource - street video cameras generally work around the clock for many years.
