Like many, I started my journey with the legendary “deshnik”, which I put on a teenage bike “Tisa”. Of course, it was not possible to assemble the ideal structure the first time; I treated childhood illnesses for another year. I selected the optimal materials and design solutions, tried different layouts, and rode, rode, rode...

What happened in the end? Ultra-light (curb weight - 25 kg) motorized vehicle with a maximum speed of 55 km/h, dynamics at the level of simple Chinese scooters, fuel consumption of 2 liters per 100 km (power reserve on one tank 50 km), which does not stain with oil at all and does not smell of gasoline . The absence of smell and dirt helps me save on a garage or parking lot; the motorbike is in the apartment and does not bring any discomfort to the family. What’s especially pleasing is that all the “pedal” functions have been fully preserved. All that remains is gear shifting and easy pedaling (thanks to the “freewheel”); if there is a lack of traction, the engine can always be helped by the pedals and go up any hill. The chassis of a modern mountain bike is very durable and reliable, disc brakes provide very confident braking, and large wheels help to overcome our “directions” more easily.

After completing modifications to the design, I have already driven more than 4,000 km and during this time I only changed the drive chain once, twice the spark plug, and once cleaned the fuel system - a good indicator of reliability and unpretentiousness.


For its lightness and daring agility, I called my motorbike “Hare”. Now I drive the “Hare” every day to work, and in traffic jams it has no equal. It's so narrow and maneuverable that during rush hour I get home faster than I used to on a motorcycle, and the travel costs are ridiculous. There were also small trips, trips outside the city, even from Moscow to Yaroslavl. The absence of smell and dirt helps me save on a garage or parking lot; the motorbike is in the apartment and does not bring any discomfort to the family. What’s especially pleasing is that all the “pedal” functions have been fully preserved. All that remains is gear shifting and easy pedaling (thanks to the “freewheel”); if there is a lack of traction, the engine can always be helped by the pedals and go up any hill. The chassis of a modern mountain bike is very durable and reliable, disc brakes provide very confident braking, and large wheels help to overcome our “directions” more easily.

After completing modifications to the design, I have already driven more than 4,000 km and during this time I only changed the drive chain once, twice the spark plug, and once cleaned the fuel system - a good indicator of reliability and unpretentiousness.

For its lightness and daring agility, I called my motorbike “Hare”. Now I drive the “Hare” every day to work, and in traffic jams it has no equal. It's so narrow and maneuverable that during rush hour I get home faster than I used to on a motorcycle, and the travel costs are ridiculous. Hello everyone, in this instruction we will look at how you can install a gasoline engine on a bicycle. The design of the bike does not change much, except for the modification of the rear drum brake; instead, an additional sprocket for the gas engine is installed.


The engine power is quite enough, the author and even his little daughter ride it. The bike is also quite comfortable to use; even a child can start the engine. As for the usual standard chain drive, it remains unchanged, so if you run out of gas or something breaks, you can ride the bike in the classic way. Materials and tools used

List of materials:
- engine from a lawn mower;
- driven and driving sprockets plus chain;
- a bicycle with a drum brake (or a wheel with a drum brake);
- (from a moped or similar);

Homemade manufacturing process:

Step one. Engine preparation
We will need the engine from a gasoline trimmer. It works well as it has an easy-to-install design, unlike a chainsaw.

The engine is already equipped with an automatic centrifugal clutch, which will allow the engine to idle and coast the bike, which is very economical.

First we will need to cut off the nose of the engine where the drive shaft is located. This is done so that the drive sprocket can be installed. The author’s body is made of plastic; he can easily cut it with a grinder.
















Step two. Drive sprocket installation
We need to attach the drive sprocket to the engine shaft, or more precisely, to the clutch shaft. The sprocket is selected as small as possible, since the speed of such an engine is very high, and we need to obtain high torque.

To install the sprocket, the author grinds the gearbox shaft with a grinder; as a result, the sprocket can now be put on the shaft with minimal clearance. Well, then we weld the star. For the author, it warmed up during welding to a red glow, which is not very good, since the steel can become soft after this. However, after welding, the author poured water on the star, quite possibly this will harden it. Also, water will prevent the shaft from overheating and melting important engine components.








Step three. Drive sprocket installation
To install the driven sprocket, we need a part from the drum brake, which is screwed onto the wheel hub. We will weld the driven sprocket to it. This sprocket must be large in size to reduce the wheel speed, turning it into high torque.

First, we center the sprocket with bolts and nuts, and then weld the parts. The author additionally secured the sprocket with two bolts and nuts to the spokes. We paint the star so that it does not rust and looks beautiful.



































Step four. Chain installation
Next we need to install the chain, but before that we need to somehow fix the engine. The author makes the fastener by making it from a piece of pipe and steel plates from which the mounting ears are made. One side of the fastener is attached with a nut to the wheel axle, and the other side is screwed to the engine with a screw.

When the engine is already fixed, we prepare the chain, increase or decrease its length depending on the needs. You can assemble the chain using locks, or you can make it whole if you have a device for pressing out connecting pins, like the author.









































Step five. Fastening the engine
We need to fasten the engine securely; for these purposes, the author made special fasteners from steel pipes and plates. The fasteners are screwed to the engine using original bolts that hold various engine parts.

And the fasteners are attached to the frame by the rear axle of the wheel, as well as to the fork using self-tapping screws. In general, this entire design looks quite reliable. We paint this entire structure so that it does not rust.

After this, you can start the engine and see how everything works. It is very important that the chain does not fly off, otherwise it will immediately get into the spokes and jam the rear wheel, which is very dangerous.






























Step six. Control
We need to install a throttle control knob on the steering wheel; you can choose one similar for mopeds. We run the cable along the frame and connect it to the engine throttle; the author had enough length.

We also need to connect the ignition, this will allow us to turn off the engine if something goes wrong. We definitely install a rear brake; we now have a classic lever brake, which is assembled above the wheel rim.

Modern trimmer is much more than just a garden tool. The high power of most brush cutters makes it possible to use them as a basis for assembling all kinds of homemade products, not the least of which is a bicycle with a trimmer engine. This self-propelled device is distinguished by its simplicity of design, high traction parameters, and ease of maintenance. The relatively low fuel consumption of the moped makes it possible to cover significant distances on it, and its high repairability allows you to independently eliminate almost any homemade malfunction.

Motorcycle from a trimmer - what to pay attention to before assembly?

Before you start assembling a motorbike with your own hands from a lawn mower, you will need to choose an engine that will become the basis of your homemade product. It is the power of the internal combustion engine that directly affects the traction characteristics and endurance of the device.

In practice, homemade products equipped with engines from trimmers with a power of 3 hp or more performed best. With. and higher. Each scooter with a motor is capable of carrying 1 adult with hand luggage, while having an additional reserve of torque.

It is strictly not recommended to assemble a homemade product based on electric motors from trimmers. This is due to the low power reserve of such motors, as well as their instability in bad weather conditions. If there is no other choice, and the manufacturer only has an electric motor at hand, then when installing the engine, special attention must be paid to protecting it from external factors: moisture, dust, debris. During further operation of the scooter with an electric motor, the trimmer will need to take frequent breaks to cool the engine. Otherwise, the engine will quickly fail.

Having dealt with the motor, you need to move on to the bicycle frame. It will need to be equipped with an additional platform on which the engine and fuel tank will be mounted. In this case, the latter should be located above the engine from the trimmer so that fuel flows to the power unit naturally.

It is very important that homemade bicycles with a trimmer motor are equipped with a comfortable handlebar, on the handles of which you can place all the switches necessary for work. This will simplify the operation of the homemade product when moving at high speed.

How to make a moped with a motor from a brush cutter?

Assembling a homemade trimmer begins with studying detailed drawings. The diagrams must indicate the dimensions of the parts used, as well as the sequence and methods of their installation into the overall structure of the moped.

Their list includes:

  • drive motor;
  • gearbox;
  • brake system;
  • welding machine;
  • Bulgarian;
  • set of bolted connections;
  • set of wrenches and screwdrivers.

The further procedure for assembling a homemade moped from a trimmer should be divided into several stages. Each of them must be treated with special responsibility, since not only the quality of the device depends on it, but also the safety of the operator during its operation.

For self-propelled movement, a scooter must be equipped with a belt that receives torque from the engine and transmits it to the drive wheel.

To assemble a high-quality drive for a homemade product, the operator needs to use:

  • driven pulley - this unit should be slightly smaller in diameter than the bicycle wheel rim;
  • drive pulley - this element must be attached to the motor from the trimmer during assembly;
  • steel suspension - it will be used to attach the motor to the frame of a homemade moped.


To assemble the drive, you also need to assemble the gearbox. Once the pulleys are installed on the bike, the manufacturer will be able to install a belt with the appropriate length and width.

Self-installation of the engine

Once the drive has been assembled and installed, the operator can begin installing the motor. For safety reasons, the internal combustion engine from a lawn mower must be mounted on a moped using an additional suspension made of metal. The fastening element itself should resemble a frame welded from steel channels and angles.


The shape and dimensions of the frame must correspond to the dimensions of the motor used. Fasteners can be attached to a bicycle frame in different ways. If in the future the motor will not be removed from the moped, then the engine mount can be welded to the device. If in the future the motor will be removed for subsequent installation back on the trimmer, then a pair of bolted connections will be suitable for attaching it to the moped.

When installing an internal combustion engine from a trimmer to a moped, you must take into account in advance the need for further engine maintenance. To make it easier for the operator to repair the internal combustion engine, the operator needs to have free access to the most frequently replaced engine parts: the air filter, cylinder and seals.

Installation of the brake system.

A homemade bicycle with a lawnmower engine must be equipped with a braking system. To make it, you will need to use a pair of brake discs, installed one on the drive and driven wheels. To control the brakes, the discs must be connected using metal cables to levers mounted on the handles of the standard handle.

In addition to installing the brakes, the operator will also need to replace the standard tires on the moped's wheels. Not only the cross-country ability of a self-propelled bicycle depends on this, but also the safety of the owner when riding off-road.

To extend the life of a moped with a trimmer motor, its owner needs to adhere to a number of important rules.

Their list includes:

  • timely replacement of consumable parts - if you do not change the air filter and other elements of the moped for a long time, then its important mechanisms will begin to work under increased load. This will lead to a more complex breakdown of the homemade product:
  • use high-quality gasoline and motor oil for refueling - if you fill the fuel tank of a moped with low-quality gasoline, then quite quickly the bicycle owner will be faced with the need to replace the engine CPG;
  • lubricate the gearbox used in a timely manner - this will prevent the mechanism from operating under high loads;
  • mix gasoline and oil strictly in the proportion specified by the trimmer manufacturer - if you add more oil than specified in the instructions, this will lead to flooding of the engine spark plug;
  • regularly check the condition of the fasteners - bolts that are not fully tightened threaten not only with the engine falling, but also with injury to the owner;
  • paint scratches and chips immediately after they appear on the frame - this will prevent further corrosion of the moped’s frame;
  • Do not allow the trimmer to overheat the engine - if you use the moped frequently, you need to take breaks. At the same time, if the bicycle is used in hot weather, then its motor should be allowed to cool down every 15 minutes of riding. If it is cool and windy outside, then the number of breaks can be reduced to 1 time for every 25–30 minutes of driving;
  • promptly change the tires on moped wheels using a trimmer - in winter, you need to install tires with spikes on homemade wheels. This will prevent wheel slipping and increase safety when using the bicycle.


Also, the owner of a bicycle with a trimmer motor will need to monitor the weight of the cargo transported on the homemade product. If the luggage is too heavy, it can lead to overheating and serious damage to the engine, as well as other mechanisms of the device.

In the great variety of shapes and designs of structures in the world of bicycles, models equipped with motors are no longer considered a curiosity. Such bikes are quite expensive, many manufacturers are trying to reduce their cost by using cheap equipment and hi-ten frames, which does not make such a bike practical to use. There is a wide range of bicycle motors on the market, which also come with all the parts necessary for installation. Equipping your bike with such a motor will not be difficult, but if you want to save a lot of money, as an option, you can simply remove a suitable motor from an old moped, chainsaw or brush cutter and create one from a trimmer with your own hands.

Upgrading an ordinary bicycle in this way will not require enormous effort, but you will have to be patient and tinker a little. First you need to decide on the type of engine that will be installed on the bike.

Types of engines

  • The gasoline (internal combustion engine) differs favorably from the electric one in its independence from the mains or battery. It can be 2-stroke or 4-stroke. Both are suitable for mounting on a bicycle, but the 4-stroke will make less noise and consume less gasoline. The power of such engines is 1–3 horsepower; for tuning a motorbike, it is better to choose from 1.5 liters. s., because supplying it with a motor of less power makes no sense.
  • Electric motor. Trimmers are usually not equipped with powerful electric motors. As a rule, their power ranges from 0.35 to 1.2 kW. This is quite enough for the engine removed from the lawn mower to fit on the bicycle. The electric motor can be powered by a battery or from the mains. can work without charging for 30–120 minutes, depending on the power and capacity of the engine, so if it is impossible to recharge, you will have to drive your bicycle in the classic way, pedaling.

There are no differences in the design of the motor from the trimmer and the motor removed from the lawn mower, so it is installed in almost the same way. But paired with such a motor, it is better than a belt, because if it gets caught in the rain, the belt will very quickly wear out and become unusable.

Grass trimmer

So, to construct a bicycle with a trimmer engine, we will need:

  • a working bicycle (it doesn’t matter whether it’s new or used, as long as it works);
  • engine from trimmer;
  • chain (you can, of course, use a belt for the same purpose, but this is very impractical and will not last long);
  • tensioner;
  • sprocket (suitable for the selected engine, possibly homemade);
  • a clamp that attaches the motor to the bicycle (you can make it yourself from some metal plate or buy it without bothering);
  • small engine with throttle handle;
  • fuse;
  • controller;
  • exhaust pipe (if we install a gasoline engine, we weld the pipe);
  • bushing, washers, screws.

  1. We put an asterisk. We attach two rubber pads to the rear wheel, one between the spokes, the other behind them. We put the star on the bushing located on the outside of the wheel, and attach the crescent on the inside.
  2. We secure the engine with a clamp. Depending on the bike model, we choose a place to mount the motor. Most often it is convenient to place it either behind the seat.
  3. We tighten the chain on the sprocket and the engine and immediately install the tensioner to adjust the chain tension.
  4. We attach the throttle handle and draw a small cable from it to the motor.
  5. We mount the gas tank.
  6. Install the carburetor.

When a bicycle with a trimmer motor has already been built, you need to carefully check all the mechanisms for any defects, since not only the functionality of your bike, but also your own safety will depend on this.
