Jaguar X Type technical specifications. Luxury car at an affordable price - Jaguar X-Type

The Jaguar specialists were faced with a difficult task. To create a new compact sedan that harmoniously fits into the style of the brand, with excellent dynamics, impeccable comfort, decent build quality and an attractive price. Surprisingly, the British coped with all the tasks assigned. Just two years after the company's board of directors gave the X400 project the green light, the Jaguar X-Type debuted at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show.

The X-Type is produced by a plant in the English county of Merseyside, where the Ford Escort was previously assembled. The company invested more than $400 million in new body and trim assembly lines, a 70% upgrade of paint booth equipment and a computerized press production control system. To ensure that up to 90 percent of exported X-Types leave the plant by train, a railway line is connected to it. Much attention was also paid to staff training. On average, each worker spent 350 hours on advanced training courses.

The X-Type sedans and X-Type Estate station wagons are the most widely produced Jaguar vehicles in history.

The appearance of the X-Type is explained by the growing popularity of luxury sedans of the D class (Mercedes C-Class, BMW 3 Series, Audi A4), which are becoming more and more equipped and technically advanced and more and more expensive, approaching the higher class - E.

In general, the X-Type is not a typical Jaguar. And it's not just about size. This is the first all-wheel drive model of the brand, and even with a transversely mounted power unit. Plus the relationship with Ford - the latest generation Mondeo platform is used.

The modern, attractive design was created in the best traditions of the company. The appearance of X-Tapy combines the features of three models of the company. The nose part was borrowed from the XJ, the profile and glazing of the S-Type, the characteristic stern and the steep hips of the rear wings of the XK8. Aggressive design, expensive interior, excellent handling and comfort are the main components of success.

The X-Type has four driven wheels! The 4x4 formula undoubtedly has its advantages. There are more and more fans of this scheme in the world every day, and in addition, buyers (at least, so says the price list) will not have to pay extra for all-wheel drive. Fans of fast driving, if they are upset, will not be too much, because 60 percent of the torque is transmitted to the rear wheels.

The creators of the car paid the closest attention to the torsional rigidity of the body. As the designers modestly note, the X-Type's body rigidity is 30 percent higher than that of the previous leader, the BMW 3 Series.

Suspension. At the front is the time-tested MacPherson strut with double wishbones. The rear is a completely independent multi-link, assembled, by the way, like the front, on a subframe. This design promises not only confident cornering, but also a significant reduction in noise and vibration levels.

The sports chassis is accompanied by temperamental engines. Even the base X-Type is equipped with a 2.5-liter V-6. Although the engine is not new (it is based on the S-Type power unit), it is pleasant in all respects. Quite convincing power of 194 hp. With. combined with excellent torque of 24.9 kgf.m. The variable intake manifold length allows the engine to produce 90% of its thrust between 2500 and 6000 rpm. This ensures smooth acceleration in almost any gear. And the so-called “natural” cylinder camber of 60 degrees should, in theory, ensure smooth operation without strong vibration. 231 horsepower from the more powerful 3.0-liter V-6 is more than the BMW and Lexus units produce.

A Sport version is also available with both engines. Its main difference is a retuned suspension, larger wheels, sports seats and a complete absence of chrome decor.

The X-Type is equipped with a Ford manual and Japanese automatic transmission.

Jaguar's creations have always been distinguished by rich interior trim. Maximum wood and leather, and as standard. The interior is purely English, “Jaguar”: an almost vertical high instrument panel with wood-effect inserts, longitudinal retractors on the seats, beautiful doors with intricate pockets and speaker grids with chrome rims. Everything is done with taste and a certain amount of chic.

The steering column is adjustable in two planes. There are generally plenty of adjustments. In addition to the required length and angle of the backrest, you can change the height of the front and back parts of the pillow (separately), plus pumping up the lumbar support. But there is no memory for settings. The air conditioner is easy to use thanks to clear buttons and a large information display. The interior lighting is separate.

The brakes, noise and vibration insulation also deserve only kind words. There are no extraneous sounds - neither from the suspension nor from the interior elements - in the cabin.

Particular attention was paid to safety. Jaguar experts spent more than 175,000 hours computer processing data to assess the safety of the X-type. From concept development to the moment the vehicle rolls off the assembly line, numerous studies have been conducted to evaluate the vehicle's safety in a variety of collision scenarios. The analysis made it possible to understand in detail and optimize the interaction of the body structure, transmission, chassis, interior trim parts and passive safety devices. Bottom line: all components work as a single system, ensuring maximum safety for the driver and passengers. Passive safety systems fitted as standard on the X-Type include dual airbags with a sophisticated sensor system.

Jaguar X-type is a powerful and fast beast that you can tame.

A prestigious car from a British company, which at one time competed with many prestigious cars, is the Jaguar X-Type and here we will talk about it.

Production of this model began in 2001 and the car was sold in sedan and station wagon body styles, and it was the first station wagon in the entire history of the company. The station wagon did not appear immediately, but 4 years after the start of production.

This model was discontinued in 2009.

Exterior

The design of the sedan is at a good level; even now it will not look like an old car. The first thing that attracts attention is the optics; they are ordinary, but there are 4 round headlights here, which looks attractive. The hood has various reliefs, which come down to optics and a small radiator grille. The bumper is quite massive, it is decorated with moldings that are painted in body color, it also has fog lights and an air intake.

The model looks no less attractive from the side than from the front. The swollen wheel arches of the model attract attention. The strict lines of the body and moldings on the doors, also painted in body color, also look beautiful.

At the rear, the sedan received simple optics in both shape and equipment, which causes a lot of controversy; some people like it, others don’t. However, there are nice details, such as a small spoiler on the trunk lid and a massive bumper with 2 beautifully inserted exhaust pipes into it.

Sedan dimensions:

  • length – 4672 mm;
  • width – 1789 mm;
  • height – 1430 mm;
  • wheelbase – 2710 mm;
  • ground clearance - 170 mm.

Technical characteristics of Jaguar X-Type

Type Volume Power Torque Overclocking Maximum speed Number of cylinders
Diesel 2.0 l 128 hp 330 H*m 9.9 sec. 201 km/h 4
Petrol 2.1 l 157 hp 196 H*m 11.1 sec. 202 km/h V6
Diesel 2.2 l 145 hp 360 H*m 9.9 sec. 208 km/h 4
Petrol 2.5 l 194 hp 241 H*m 8.6 sec. 222 km/h V6
Petrol 3.0 l 231 hp 279 H*m 7 sec. 235 km/h V6

The manufacturer installed 5 engine versions on this car, depending on which one the buyer chooses. Three versions of the gasoline engine were available, all of them were V-shaped with 6 cylinders, their volume was 2.1 liters, 2.5 liters and 3.0 liters.

The manufacturer also offered the buyer 2 diesel engines, which Jaguar borrowed from the company. The volume of diesel engines is 2.0 liters and 2.2 liters.

In general, the engines are powerful, but they are made more for a quiet ride and therefore the car accelerates smoothly. Also, engines by today's standards have quite high fuel consumption.

Depending on the buyer’s choice of power unit, it is equipped with different gearboxes. A total of 4 types of gearbox are offered, this is and, but they come in either 5 or 6 speed.

Jaguar X-Type interior

Externally, the car did not look very attractive, but the interior turned out to be luxurious for that time. The interior features leather seats, a four-spoke steering wheel with multimedia controls. The center console contains a multimedia display and buttons for its control and control of other systems in the car.

Near the gearbox selector there is a niche for small items, which is closed with a wooden insert that opens by pressing it. Also, for more comfortable movement, the model was equipped with an armrest that opens and you can put something in it. There are two cup holders under the armrest. The buyer chose the skin color himself.

The rear seats are comfortable and passengers will feel great in the back. The rear doors have electric windows, and the multimedia system speakers are also built into the doors. Two rear passengers will be comfortable as there is an armrest with cup holders for them.

In general, we can safely say about the interior that it is beautiful and comfortable, and for that time, most likely everyone liked it. This car was tested for safety in 2002 and the car received the maximum 5 stars for safety.

Price

This car has already been discontinued, and you won’t be able to buy a new one, so those who want it can only go to the secondary market. In the former use, the model costs on average 400,000 rubles, but there are instances that are 2 times more expensive.

In terms of comfort, the Jaguar X-Type is very good and will appeal to many; in terms of dynamic characteristics, the car is certainly not very attractive. In all other respects, this is a good car, but it is no longer produced and to purchase it you will have to look for a good used one. Our rating for this car is positive.

It remains only to find out what the 3-4-year-old X-type is and whether its maintenance will pose serious financial costs.

Worthy personality

The compact Jaguar was produced from 2001 to 2009, and was built on the platform of the regular Mondeo - at that time the famous English brand was part of Ford's orbit. But this fact is unlikely to upset the buyer of a used copy. Quite the contrary - after all, most of the consumables and individual suspension parts can be selected from the Ford spare parts range, saving a fair amount on abandoning the “cat” original. So all the differences from the Mondeo are in favor of the owner: apart from similar technical features, these half-brothers have nothing in common.

An elegant suit with a timeless classic cut, an interior trimmed in natural wood with seats upholstered in velor or leather - all these are signs of the breed: despite the status of the youngest in the Jaguar family, the X-type is by no means deprived of premium features. Without exception, all modifications were equipped with six airbags and a dynamic stabilization system, and gasoline engines - up to the base 2.1-liter - had a status V6 configuration.

An equally important feature of these cars was the AWD transmission: while the X-type's competitors mostly had single-axle drive, Jaguars were dominated by modifications with all-wheel drive. The car was originally designed as a 4x4, and only in 2003 versions with only front-wheel drive appeared - which, by the way, cost the same as all-wheel drive cars.

In general, Jaguar, as you can see, has plenty of advantages. What about the downsides in terms of reliability?

Features of Russian residence

Jaguar has good immunity to the reagents that are abundantly sprayed on our roads in winter. Salt solutions - as well as shampoos used in contactless car washes - only damage the chrome of the decorative trims.

Body

Disappearing shine is a non-warranty case: with the same success, chemistry also harms cars of other brands. And specks of corrosion that are uncharacteristic for a car can only be found on trunk lid around the decorative trim above the license plate. Vibrating as it moved, the harmful strip began to rub the paint in the places where it was attached in those cases when it was dismantled and then put back without a special gasket. This sometimes happened during body repairs or replacing the trunk lock: on copies of the first years of production, they sometimes failed.

Electrical equipment

The electrical equipment is also quite reliable. Mechanics recall only rare “glitches” limit switches front door locks, which got rid of the disease with the help of basic drying.

Among the weak points are also mentioned battery- especially on cars intended for Russia with a winter package. The fact is that in winter, the simultaneous operation of heated seats, windshield and rear windows placed serious loads on the standard 55 Ah battery, which, when traveling through traffic jams, simply did not have time to replenish the expended reserves and quickly died. As a countermeasure, the British proposed installing a battery with a larger capacity, but at the expense of the client. That is, for a separate fee charged by dealers.

Within reasonable limits (transmission)

Clutch

With mileages of up to 100,000 km, Jaguar transmissions rarely break down. An exception - clutch. No, it is devoid of any congenital defects, it simply categorically cannot stand it if the driver holds the pedal down for a long time: a unit equipped with a hydraulic drive will not tolerate such violence against itself.

Despite the very limited number of X-types with manual gearboxes, mechanics came across cars on which the driven discs “ran out” after just 2000–3000 km. By the way, on such machines, as a rule, the expensive dual-mass flywheel also had to be replaced. Keep this in mind if you are looking at the hand version.

automatic transmission

In our opinion, it is better to choose a car with an automatic transmission: it is both convenient and quite reliable. Servicemen have no complaints at all about the new 6-speed automatic transmission, which appeared after the 2008 restyling in combination with a 145-horsepower diesel engine. As for the 5-speed gearbox of the Japanese company Jatko, which serves gasoline engines, its possible vagaries in the form of jolts when changing gears appear already at decent mileage. In most cases, such a box can be repaired - which, of course, is significantly cheaper than buying a new one.

There are no serious reasons not to purchase an all-wheel drive version. Yes, the transfer case has its own drawback: due to corrosive wear of the output shaft bearing race, the angular gearbox begins to make a loud noise over time. But, again, if this disease occurs, it occurs only in older cars.

About healthy food (engines)

The power units from the Ford storeroom that were installed on the X-type are, in general, quite durable. The only point worth paying attention to is the quality of the fuel: the consequences of improper feeding of both gasoline engines and turbodiesels can be disastrous. In addition to spark plugs, the replacement of which in a gasoline V-shaped “six” requires the removal of intake manifolds and therefore costs a pretty penny, pouring “grunt” into the tank can kill catalytic converters, which cannot be removed by installing decoys. The engine will work properly only with new parts.

Frequent short runs also have a detrimental effect on the health of the catalysts, leading to the accumulation of fuel vapors in the honeycombs and contributing to their destruction. Diesel engines become coked and jammed due to poor diesel fuel. recirculation valve exhaust gas (EGR), and the car stops starting. In the initial stages of the disease, gently tapping the valve helps revive the car, but soon the part still has to be replaced.

Finally, the turbodiesel that appeared in 2008 needs to be allowed to run at full load for about thirty minutes from time to time - at least once a month. This procedure is required for burning-cleaning particulate filter, without which he simply dies. And a new one costs exorbitantly - as much as 90 thousand rubles!

Enviable feature (chassis and steering)

Suspension

The suspension of the youngest Jaguar is very durable. With the exception of bushings front and rear stabilizers, capable of dying at 30–40 thousand, all other parts, including shock absorbers, consistently last more than a hundred thousand. And the steering rack with rods and ends, as well as the front levers, were completely changed by the craftsmen exclusively after an accident.

Brakes

There is no reason to complain about the rapid wear of brake system parts. The front pads run at least 30 thousand, the rear ones - 50–60 thousand km. As a rule, there are enough discs for a couple of sets of pads. By the way, prevention helps to prolong the life of both of them - cleaning and lubricating the guide pins of the brake calipers. In our conditions, on roads filled with salt and mud, such a measure is very relevant.

Are we buying?

In technical terms, the Jaguar X-type is much simpler than its German competitors and, perhaps, in terms of handling and ride comfort, is not up to par with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series. But it converts the relative simplicity of the design into reliability.

An English car really has no obvious weak points, and it may require serious investments only after achieving significant mileage. Therefore, we have nothing against buying such a “Jag”, which managed to work hard for its first owner. Moreover, it is not difficult to find affordable but high-quality non-original spare parts for this generally expensive car.

General information about the model

X− Type is a luxury class D car from the British company Jaguar, built on the Ford Mondeo platform. It was produced in sedan and station wagon body styles. The first all-wheel drive vehicle in the company's history. A little later, a front-wheel drive modification appeared, which greatly shocked true fans of classic rear-wheel drive Jaguars. The car was produced at a plant in the English county of Merseyside, where the Ford Escort was previously assembled. The company spent more than $400 million redesigning the equipment. New body and interior assembly lines were built, paint booths and the conveyors themselves were updated. To transport products abroad, a separate railway line was connected to the plant, along which about 90% of the cars produced were transported. All plant personnel received additional training. On average, each specialist attended 360 hours of lectures.

In 1999, the board of directors of Ford Motor Co, in order to save the British company from bankruptcy, instructed Jaguar managing director Jonathan Browning to develop and launch a new business-class sedan. The project was codenamed X400. The team of the English company had to develop a completely new car that would succinctly fit into the Jaguar style, with excellent dynamics, a high level of comfort, good build quality and, at the same time, an attractive price. It is worth noting that the last compact sedan in the English family, the Jaguar Mark 1, was developed in 1955.

To reduce production costs, when creating the car, we used the existing platform from the third generation Ford Mondeo. To convert it into an all-wheel drive model, and even with a transverse power unit, the engineers had to work a lot of magic on it.

And so, two years later, in February 2001, at the Geneva Motor Show, the X− Type was first presented to the general public. The presentation of the new model became the highlight of the entire exhibition. Tests carried out by journalists confirmed to the public that, despite its size, this is still a real Jaguar. Recognizable body features, powerful engines, luxury in the cabin and permanent all-wheel drive amazed visitors to the car show.

In 2003, the car underwent a light restyling. The updated model received a new 2.0 liter Ford Duratorq turbocharged diesel engine with 130 hp. In addition, front-wheel drive modifications of the X− Type went on sale, and in 2004 the X− Type Estate station wagon was released. The model was in good demand. Despite this, having undergone minor changes in 2005 and 2008, Jaguar still had to retire. On July 15, 2009, due to Ford's financial problems, the concern's management announced the cessation of production of the X−Type.

Technical features and characteristics

Most often on Russian roads there are specimens with a 2.5 liter V6 engine. The engine is quite high-torque - the variable length of the intake manifold allows for maximum torque in the range from 2500 to 6000 rpm. The cylinder camber of 60° dampens almost all vibrations during operation of the power unit. Cars with the 2.1-liter Ford diesel engine that appeared later were also in good demand. Interesting fact: when idling, this engine makes a purring sound similar to a cat purring. The company's specialists claim that their mechanics worked for a very long time and specially reconfigured the intake system for the sake of such a thoroughbred sound.

Transmissions are Ford 5-speed manual and Japanese automatic. Manual transmissions are distinguished by their reliability and unpretentiousness, which cannot be said about “automatic” cars of the first two or three years of production. Jaguar even carried out a recall campaign to replace the automatic transmission. Their clutches often burned and gears shifted incorrectly. The all-wheel drive is built according to the classic scheme, where 60% of the torque falls on the rear axle, and 40% on the front axle. When wheels slip, with the help of sensors, torque is redistributed to an axle with a high coefficient of adhesion.

The body rigidity of the X−Type is almost 30% higher than the previous leader, the BMW 3 Series. A well-designed suspension provides the car with good handling and the absence of unnecessary vibration and noise. At the front there is a reliable MacPherson strut on double wishbones, at the rear there is a completely independent multi-link system, assembled, like the front one, on a subframe. There were some minor comments about squeaks in the rear suspension, but the problem was quickly eliminated by replacing a couple of silent blocks. Sport version cars are equipped with retuned front and rear suspension, larger wheels, and sports seats.

The interior of the car is quite cozy. Real wood inserts and leather upholstery elements will not fade over time. The plastic of the instrument panel is high quality. The ergonomics of the driver's seat are quite well thought out. There's plenty of space in the front, but it's a bit cramped in the back. It's almost impossible for three of us to sit. And getting into the second row of seats is difficult. The blowing of the windshield causes complaints - ice forms on the upper part of it, which cannot be removed even by turning on the heater at maximum power.

British engineers paid great attention to the safety of the car. All possible accident scenarios were studied. Even as standard, the car has eight airbags. Also in the database there is already ABS with traction control and anti-skid systems, electrically heated mirrors, electric windows and mirrors, an audio system, 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning and fog lights

Exploitation

As a rule, operating a vehicle in difficult conditions entails additional costs. When using low-quality fuel containing a large amount of sulfur, you will have to change the spark plugs every 20-30 thousand kilometers - this is not a cheap procedure, since this requires removing the intake manifold.

Approximately every 50,000 km, the injection system injectors will need to be cleaned to remove various deposits. Catalysts (there are two of them in X) also rarely travel more than 90 thousand km - replacing them will cost a pretty penny.

The suspension on the car is quite durable: even the struts and stabilizer bushings can last 30-40 thousand kilometers without problems. Most often, rubber suspension elements, such as silent blocks of levers, require replacement. But brake pads rarely last more than 35,000 km.

The body of the model is strong, galvanized. But you can often notice examples with peeling paint on the rear wheel arches - a consequence of the effects of anti-ice reagents that are so generously sprinkled on our roads. But rust on the body is most likely due to poor quality body repairs.

The main disadvantage of the car is its low liquidity on the secondary market. There is even a joke that the fastest way to sell a Jaguar is to insure it and set it on fire.

In January 2011, the company's management announced its intention to release a successor to the X−Type in 2014.

DREAM - MASSIVE CIRCULATION

Behind the wheel No. 12 2001

FROM FROM NOW, THE JAGUAR IS NOT ONLY THE PROPERTY OF THE SELECTED

In 1936, the English SS Car Company released the first Jaguar SS-100 convertible, establishing itself as a manufacturer of powerful sports cars and luxury sedans. We are done with utilitarian motorcycle sidecars. For three quarters of a century, the brand name was firmly associated with the highest spheres and aristocratic receptions, with the smell of expensive leather, exquisite perfumes, etc. money. Yes, yes, only the wealthiest trainers could afford to tame a purebred cat.

The new owner of Jaguar (the company received this name after the war, when the abbreviation SS became odious) - Ford Corporation - decided to release a more affordable middle-class model (category D according to the European classification). The way to reduce costs (and from there to an affordable price) is unification with already produced models. And although all European Fords are front-wheel drive, accusations of an attack on the holy of holies of the Jaguar - the classic layout - were almost avoided by using the platform of the future all-wheel drive Mondeo. The result was .

YOUNGER SCOP OF A NOBLE ROOM.

The pedigree is in perfect order, the family resemblance is obvious: a silhouette creeping above the ground, dual round (more precisely, elliptical) headlights, relief stampings on the hood, tapering stern, characteristic lights. Why not a smaller copy of the XJ8?

And on the go. The engine mounted on hydraulic mounts is quiet and inaudible; shaking and vibrations are cut off by rubber bushings of two subframes. Occasionally the wide tires splash on the asphalt, which is even pleasant - they say, well, my bast shoes are powerful! But the creaking and tapping noise in the rear suspension is initially perceived as a hallucination - this cannot be true! Discouraged, you grab onto a saving thought - there’s probably something wrong with our particular car.

How much is there under our hood? Almost two hundred horses per two and a half liters of displacement - let’s let them out on the asphalt to frolic. At the same time, we will enjoy the royal roar with peals and overflows. We will feel uncontrollable, but at the same time smooth, without fussy jerks, acceleration. An angry and hectic ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! with metallic notes could belong to many of the four-wheeled predators. Even those rootless ones who live in packs and are not blessed with legendary names. There was also acceleration: having comprehended the driver’s wishes, the AW tomato quickly clicked the required number of gears down and allowed us to start without hesitation. Yes. The Jaguar steers and brakes beautifully.

WHERE DID THE CREATOR RELAX ON?

Passengers, meanwhile, grumble: oh, it’s inconvenient to sit back, oh, the doors open at a small angle, oh, your head rests on the roof. But the silhouette, but the breed! And in general, the main person here is behind the wheel - let’s listen to him.

And he gave it away: the legs are cramped, the AW tomato selector hangs in some intermediate positions and needs supervision while you move it along the signature winding ruler. In the interior trim, leather alternates with inexpensive stamped plastic, and the inserts on the panels and console under the expensive finishing stone slightly do not match in color and texture. Moreover, there is a wooden lever sticking out in the middle - what should it go with?

Take it easy with criticism - Jaguar, after all. And aren’t the bucket seats with multiple adjustments and the steering wheel comfortable? And eight airbags, and climate control, and music, and all sorts of electric drives, and an electrically heated windshield, in the end?

Uh-uh, my friend. To do this, you don’t have to be born a Jaguar - many simpler animals have radios and electric drives. What was worth paying forty thousand dollars for - modern bells and whistles can be bought much cheaper. Although, let’s be fair, this is not a big price to pay for the opportunity to say the cherished words, my Jaguar.

He made his debut at the Geneva AW Auto Show in the spring of 2001. Built with elements of the Ford-Mondeo platform, this is the first all-wheel drive Jaguar, and even with a transverse engine. Available only with a sedan body and V6 petrol engines of 2.5 and 3.0 liters, with five-speed (manual or AW automatic) gearboxes.

Moderate price for a thoroughbred car.

— The quality does not match the high image of the brand.

Have you ever been disappointed by a movie that you heard rave reviews about before watching it? So the Jaguar is good, but the name obliges us to do more.

Seeing the nameplate on the trunk of the Jaguar, a colleague grumbled skeptically: “The cat was given diesel fuel.” Indeed, the combination of the classic style of even the most inexpensive model of the famous British brand, associated with luxury and speed, and the low rumbling from under the hood initially causes shock.

SLEEK DYNAMIC SEDAN AND DIESEL INCOMPATIBLE?

NOTHING LIKE THIS!

The designers cannot be denied the taste and ability to combine classics with modern ergonomic requirements. However, sitting in the interior, decorated modestly, but with a taste worthy of the “cat’s” pedigree, you do not immediately recognize that there is a diesel engine under the hood. Even when accelerating in place, the reason for the low but quiet growling can be attributed to the tuned exhaust system. Only at traffic lights, when switching to idle speed, a small, characteristic diesel shudder ran through the pedals and gear lever for a few seconds.

It took me a while to get used to the very hard leather chair. Is this for sports composure? Does a rather large sedan with a 130-horsepower diesel engine need it? It turned out that it was necessary!

Rearward seating is not very comfortable, and there is not much space - this is the price to pay for the squat, swift silhouette. In the Executive configuration, the JAGUAR X-TYPE 2.0d costs $38,900. Boldly and deeply pressing the pedal, I felt how hard my back was pressed against the backrest. Before I knew it, the tachometer needle was already at the red zone! Second gear... Alas, it's time to slow down. Jaguar does this less confidently. Efficiency is normal, but the control algorithm is not ideal: the free play is too large. And when it finally ends, the pedal is still somewhat soft. It takes time to get used to this feature.

But what an engine! Rudolf Diesel would probably be pleased. I'll try to make fun of the car. On the second one it starts off with almost no indignation, all you need to do is play the clutch a little. The engine pulls great from about 1200 rpm. The needle quickly passes the 2000 rpm mark, and then... AW the car seems to have lost a couple of centners of mass or connected a couple of cylinders.

I continue risky experiments. When climbing in third gear from 1000 rpm, the engine pulls reluctantly. But this is truly a mockery: modern diesel engines, “tailored” to strict environmental standards, do not accept this. But in a dense, slow flow, without sharp accelerations and without steep climbs, the “cat” is quite ready to pull from 1000 rpm even in third. Urban, but dynamic driving, without regard to economy, judging by the message from the on-board computer and the movement of the arrow of the fuel level indicator, costs approximately 8 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km.

And the initial cost for the JAGUAR X-TYPE 2.0d is $33,900 for the basic version (Entry package). Considering the cozy interior, decent handling (the dynamic car reacts to steering quite obediently, but without tiring harshness), expressive design and excellent engine, this is not much at all.

In general, skepticism is not justified: diesel fuel did not harm the “cat” at all. Her rumbling is not at all loud and indignant, on the contrary, it is contented and kind.

Test Drive

On the eve of the introduction of the most important model of the last 30 years, Jaguar management decided to republish and expand the famous book by Eric Dymock, “The Jaguar File,” which describes in detail all the pets that have come out of the company’s “aviaries” since its inception in 1922.

The 432 pages contain photographs of every AW vehicle ever created by Sir William Loyens, from the first motorcycle with a sidecar to his latest masterpiece, the . In total, the book contains more than 200 photographs of cars. Some AW cars are fast, others are slow, some are ancient, others are modern, but none of them can be called ugly. However, if every AW Jaguar car is a masterpiece, then why, you ask, do AW automotive industry experts not expect anything special from the new X-Type? This is probably due to the fact that the X-Type is Jaguar's first attempt to create an AW car for the masses since its merger with Ford. Maybe critics are confused by the low price, which is not typical for AW Jaguar cars. Or perhaps the whole point is that the new AW car is built on the Ford platform and has similar parts to the European Mondeo.

By simple mathematical calculations, the new X-Type is even more Jaguar than the outstanding S-Type. According to Jaguar's vice president of public relations, Simon Sproul, the S-Type shares about 40% of its components with Lincoln, while the X-Type borrows only 20% from Mondeo. Apart from the platform, engine block and transmission, everything else about the X-Type is Jaguar.

But even though the new AW car is powered by the same Duratec V6 engine that powers the Ford Taurus, parts such as the cylinder head, intake manifold and exhaust system are of British origin. As a result, the three-liter V6 engine produces 231 hp. compared to Ford which has 31 fewer horses. Even the smaller 2.5-liter version of the engine boasts 194 hp.

Both the three-liter and 2.5-liter X-Type are in no way inferior to their rivals. The X-Type, with its three-litre V6 engine, is as powerful as the BMW 330xi and has as much torque as the Mercedes C320. According to the manufacturers, the X-Type 3.0 with a manual transmission is capable of accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. This is the same result as the all-wheel drive BMW 330xi sedan.

The X-Type developers explain that the advantage of an AW car lies in the valve synchronization mechanism. If the technical characteristics are pleasantly surprising, then the steering is simply shocking. The X-Type boasts the athletic grace of German sedans. According to the manufacturers, they deliberately departed from tradition in order to attract the attention of the younger generation of AW enthusiasts. “We don't just want to create a miniature version of the big Jaguar.

The X-Type's sport steering will attract buyers in the under-40 age group who love to buy AW BMW cars," said company spokesman Mike Cross.

The X-Type's all-wheel drive, which is akin to that found on the Audi Quattro, is very credible, and the transmission distributes power so that 40% of the power goes to the front drive and 60% to the rear. This is a very successful combination, as it emphasizes the sporty nature of the AW car. In fact, in most situations the X-Type behaves like a rear-wheel drive AW car.

The steering is light and precise, although it is slightly insufficient in the car's AW response to turning the steering wheel, which is inherent in all-wheel drive Mercedes. In bad weather conditions, the baby Jag proved to be a reliable, stable AW vehicle. The X-Type raced through puddles like dry asphalt. The car is available with 2 suspension options: standard and sports, but even the standard version is much “sportier” than the suspension of any Jaguar sedan.

The sports package includes dynamic stability control, a stiffer suspension that is lowered by 10 mm and 17-inch wheels shod with Continental tires that provide excellent grip on wet roads.

When developing the interior of the X-Type, manufacturers continued the “German” traditions. And in comparison with the cozy Jaguar salons, the interior of the new AW car can rather be called “Spartan”. Of course, both wood and leather were used, but not in the quantity and combination that you might expect from a company that is said to create such a cozy ambiance in the cabin that it feels like you're sitting in front of a fireplace. However, the interior has the luxury of a Mercedes C320. Many experts believe that it is not at all bad to abandon old traditions and keep up with the times, however, it is stupid to reinvent the wheel and forget about previous achievements, such as, for example, a comfortable interior.

In more detail about the interior, we can say the following: the seats are covered with standard Jaguar Connolly leather, the driver's seat adjusts to the dimensions of any driver. The car is equipped with a standard climate control system, AW automatic windows, a cassette audio system, armrests that can be adjusted for the driver and front passenger, as well as a raised and lowered armrest for rear passengers. On the steering wheel there are buttons for controlling the cruise control systems, audio system and telephone. Standard safety features include ABS and front and side airbags.

Went “to the people”

The little “Jaguar” appeared to be a very unique AW vehicle. It turned out that the X-Type is very difficult to evaluate unambiguously, since anyone can easily present it in both a positive and negative light, while still managing not to show indifference to the legendary English brand.

Repeating for the millionth time the mantra about the unpopularity of diesel in our market, sometimes you really want to become a part of Europe. In the meantime, pouring diesel fuel of dubious quality into the gas tank, you still have to listen to comments about the exorbitant coolness of the 2.5- and 3-liter engines for the X-Type model, which must certainly be accompanied by a declaration of love for all-wheel drive and no less all-wheel drive.” stuffing.” Try to travel an entire weekend for 1000 rubles, without even completely using up the contents of a 60-liter fuel tank. After such feats, I want even more for everything to work out for the diesel “Jaguar” - however, for some reason the consciousness resists, not allowing me to properly develop support for blind faith in a miracle.

Noises and smells are especially disturbing. The rattling “Jaguar” makes a double impression on many: the status of an aristocratic brand and the tractor accompaniment contradict each other. The sound of a diesel engine sounds like a death sentence, and it makes absolutely no difference that it has low fuel consumption. One turn of the key and you are a tractor driver, but you have the famous cat on the steering wheel - you must agree, it’s a very strange sensation. The first meters are accompanied by 2 liters of working volume, turbine, 130 hp. and a manual 5-speed gearbox give rise to different thoughts, but suicidal ones still predominate among them. There is not enough traction from low revs in first gear, so you have to get the hang of it so as not to stall, like a mediocre AW school student in his second lesson. Then it gets a little easier. The little Jago only revs past 3,000 rpm, so you have to keep pushing it into that rev range before driving becomes fun. By the way, the average consumption over the entire period did not exceed 9 liters.

After gaining 3 thousand revolutions AW, the car seems to be transformed - it behaves perfectly, based on a well-known platform, the engine noise in the cabin is not audible at all, the suspension is very comfortable and, while driving, quickly gives an idea of what the word comfort currently means in the understanding of this AW car brand. But in this case, it’s also worth making allowance for the fact that the X-Type is still not quite the usual Jaguar. It is too strikingly different from the classics in all respects, starting with its size. This is perhaps the main problem with this model.

But no matter what anyone says, it’s really nice to be in the cabin of this AW car. Perhaps not in the rear seats, where there is clearly not enough space for more or less large people. The seats, by the way, are quite comfortable, you just need to find your own settings. It is also worth working with the steering wheel, which is trimmed with wood and leather, which does not have a very good effect on the grip of your hands on its working surface.

The center console benefits significantly from the touch screen, which allows you to manipulate a huge variety of functions, but first you will need to configure everything while standing still, so that while driving you can hit the right points with your finger without taking your eyes off the road. By the way, the screen is a little glare and will certainly get dirty, so you need to prepare yourself for this, as well as for the presence of many plastic buttons from the Ford Mondeo model, which is a supplier of many parts for.

In general, the AW car made a pleasant impression, but at the same time it did not leave the feeling that a real Jaguar had been nearby for several days. He saved money, but did not give luxury - this is the main problem of the little Jago. They are now choosing it as an alternative to boring competitors, for whom queues are constantly lining up. In addition, Jaguars are not stolen, which also plays a big role. Now a similar model can be bought for less than 40 thousand dollars, while not unreasonably counting on a good discount and various gifts. So this AW car definitely deserves at least a test drive with passion - try to give it a chance, but don’t forget to check the service prices.
