What an FM transmitter might look like.

A small gadget called an FM modulator or FM transmitter is needed to be a link between a regular USB flash drive and an FM radio receiver. Typically, the device is used in cars whose age has exceeded 10-15 years, equipped with old-style radios. By connecting an FM transmitter, it becomes possible to use the radio to play music recorded on a USB flash drive and other digital media.

Modern FM modulators provide the ability to pair with a phone or laptop to read audio files from their memory without transferring them to a flash card. This device makes life extremely easy for owners of old cars and allows them to do without replacing the car radio with a new digital audio device.

How does an FM transmitter work?

What does a connected FM transmitter look like in a car?

A typical FM transmitter is equipped with a car cigarette lighter connector from which it receives power. Almost all models are equipped with a small display that shows the operating frequency and other parameters. Some models come with a remote control that allows you to control the transmitter from the rear seat.

All modern devices have a USB connector for connecting a flash drive and a slot for a micro SD card. Modulators that can communicate with a phone or laptop do this via a standard cord with an audio connector or via Bluetooth. Another connection option is using the appropriate phone applications, which can be downloaded from the application store.

The main unit of the FM transmitter is an electronic unit that reads information in digital format and transforms it into an analog radio signal of the selected frequency. Reading occurs directly from the connected media, or first the information is rewritten to the internal memory of the device, and from there it is sent for modulation.

Depending on the design, the signal is sent either to a low-power radio transmitter, which transmits it to the antenna of the FM radio, or to a wired modulator, which transmits it to the radio for playback via wire. The length of the carrier frequency must be different from the frequency ranges of radio stations, otherwise the overlap of signals received by the FM receiver will degrade the quality of sound reproduction, or even make listening to music impossible.

How to choose an FM transmitter

When choosing a transmitter, it’s easy to get confused by the variety of models and functions, so you need to first become at least a little familiar with the capabilities of different devices. Inexpensive budget FM transmitters

The simplest models, as a rule, provide only one function - the ability to play audio recordings from a USB drive with a small memory capacity on the car radio. They are equipped with a minimum of control buttons and a small black and white display. A full scanning of a playlist is most often impossible; playback is carried out in the order of recording in the root directory. Such devices do not have their own memory, and the playback quality is average.

Thanks to the presence of memory, the processing speed of information is increased compared to the simplest models, so the functionality allows you to create your own playlists and process files in several different formats. As a rule, such FM modulators can communicate with smartphones and other media players with their own memory, for which a cord with an audio connector is included. In addition, the design usually includes a slot for micro-SD memory cards.

Depending on how the FM transmitter will be used, three user modes can be distinguished:

  • source of background sound - for those who do not pay too much attention to the melodies being played and do not like to create playlists on their own, so you can limit yourself to the simplest and most inexpensive model;
  • audio+ bluetooth – optimal mode for those who spend a lot of time on the road every day, often have to answer calls, and need high-quality and convenient speakerphone;
  • maximum possibilities - an option for those who value high-quality sound or feel the need to play video files.

However, the technical capabilities of modulators are constantly increasing, and it is possible that new models will have or already have even more advanced functionality.

How to set up an FM transmitter

Often, when trying to configure an FM transmitter, the most that can be done is to get a sound accompanied by the hiss of radio interference. For many drivers, it is unclear how this can happen, because the radio and transmitter are located nearby, literally half a meter apart, and the level of the radio signal must ensure ideal reception. However, they forget that it is not the radio itself that receives the signal, but its antenna, which is usually located outside the cabin, is located in the rear part of the body, and besides, the metal of the body absorbs a significant part of the radio signal. We must not forget about the interference caused by electrical wires stretched along the streets. On the contrary, for an active antenna on the windshield, the signal from the FM transmitter may be too strong, and the device literally choke, passing a strong signal through its broadband input amplifier.

Typical malfunctions of FM modulators (transmitters) can be divided into 3 types. I will talk in detail about only one, since the other two in 50% of cases lead to the complete unsuitability of the device!

The first type of malfunction is the failure of the stabilizer chip. Figure 1 shows the modulator itself in disassembled form.

This microcircuit is the reason for the device failure.

The microcircuit lowers the battery voltage to 4.5 - 5v and stabilizes it. From its output, this voltage is supplied to the main board to power the modulator circuits. For various reasons, the microcircuit may fail. If a break occurs inside it, then power does not flow to the main board. But this is half the trouble. You just need to replace the chip and everything is fine.

It is much worse when a breakdown occurs - then this is an almost 50% guarantee of complete repairability of the entire device. So, the main board will receive voltage from the battery directly. And this will most likely kill the device completely!

In Figure 2, this microcircuit is marked with an arrow. There is noticeable swelling on its body, which indicates 100% failure of the microcircuit.

If necessary, the microcircuit can be replaced with any one that has suitable parameters. The main thing is that it has a stabilized output voltage of about 4.5 - 5v! I even had to install 7805 in a regular case instead of 7805 in the TO case! You just need to sharpen the metal part a little.

If, after replacing the microcircuit, the device still refuses to show signs of life, then there is still a chance to revive it. On the main board, not far from the soldering point of the conductor through which the +5v supply voltage is supplied, there is an SMD transistor (not in all models). Through it, voltage is supplied to the board. Most likely he is in a “cliff”. It is necessary to short-circuit the terminals of its collector and emitter.

If the device works normally after this, then you can either replace the transistor, or simply leave the jumper. Everything will work fine even with a jumper, it has been tested on more than a dozen devices!

If there is no such transistor on the board or the device does not turn on after installing the jumper, leave this idea, more serious components are most likely damaged!

There were cases when the device turned on after the indicated replacements, but the number 9 was displayed on the screen, which slowly began to go out. In this situation, further attempts to restore the device’s functionality were unsuccessful. Unfortunately, the reason for this behavior could not be determined exactly.
