Hyundai Getz what should. Choosing a used Hyundai Getz

In 2002, the South Korean company Hyundai announced the start of production of the Hyundai Getz compact hatchback. The model is called differently on different continents, for example, in India it is Getz Prime, and in Venezuela Dodge Brisa. The Koreans managed to assemble an amazing car that has nothing in common with other developments of Hyundai Motor Company engineers. The design of the hatchback is more like the brainchild of the German or Japanese car industry.

It is for the appearance and high performance characteristics the model quickly gained high popularity. Potential buyers also see South Korean-made engines as attractive and reliable, which have managed to prove themselves only from the best side during all this time. Let's talk about the resource of the Hyundai Getz engine, and what problems the owner runs the risk of encountering during the operation of the car.

What engines were equipped with Hyundai Getz?

The line of power units Hyundai Getz is not replete with a special variety, but there is still plenty to choose from. Until 2005, three different power plants were available to the buyer: 1.1 SOHC, 1.3 SOHC, 1.6 DOHC. But after the manufacturer decided to abandon the 1.3-liter engine in favor of a 1.4-liter modification. So a new power unit appeared, which later became the base for a subcompact car. All three motors are considered quite economical, due to their small volume and power.

The top equipment Hyundai Getz was equipped with a 1.6-liter unit with a capacity of 105 Horse power. This engine was aggregated mechanically or automatic transmission gears. The average engine and in most cases the most appropriate is still considered a 1.4-liter engine. The power of 97 horsepower is enough for a comfortable daily movement through the streets of the metropolis. In addition to modifications with mechanics, you can also find a version of the car with a 4-speed automatic.

How many "run" these engines?

The model was discontinued in 2011 when the miniature Hyundai Getz was replaced by a new 5-door. But, despite this, many motorists are not opposed to acquiring a development of a South Korean automaker that is successful in every sense. Power 16-valve units are known for their reliability and unpretentiousness. G4EE engines marked by the manufacturer, with proper, high-quality, timely service, “walk” at least 300 thousand kilometers. The motors are equipped timing belt, hydraulic lifters, which in some cases can knock on the "cold".

The appearance of extraneous sounds in the operation of a cold engine does not always indicate a malfunction in the car's system, sometimes sounds can be a technological feature of the operation of a certain modification of the power unit. The Hyundai Getz cylinder block is made of ductile iron, but the cylinder head itself was made of aluminum alloy. A distinctive feature of the 1.4-liter engine is the presence of two camshafts, the operation of which is possible due to the combined timing. A similar design cannot be found, for example, in the device of a 1.3-liter engine, where only one belt is installed.

Owner reviews

The timing belt, as a rule, in the Hyundai Getz 1.3 car system serves for 60-70 thousand kilometers. The need to replace the chain occurs less frequently - 80-90 thousand km. At this point, the chain stretches and begins to ring. In general, all the power units of a subcompact car are resistant to adverse factors, reliable and picky. The first more or less energy-intensive repair may be needed during the passage of the first 60 thousand km - it will be necessary to replace the crankshaft oil seals. Spark plugs with low quality fuel in rare cases "live" longer than 30 thousand km. The rest of the possible malfunctions and the real numbers of the resource of the Hyundai Getz engines will be illuminated by the reviews of the owners.

Engine with a volume of 1.1 l

  1. Yuri, Barnaul. I have a 2008 Hyundai Getz with a 1.1L engine. I am satisfied with the car, the mileage has exceeded 180 thousand kilometers. It is convenient to travel every day for business and work, it is easy to find a free parking space in the supermarket. During this time, I changed the crankshaft oil seals, I have already changed the timing belt twice. The engine itself is unpretentious, with our fuel it feels quite good. It is also best to change the engine oil before it is supposed to, here already, whoever likes it. I think that it is not necessary to say that it is also necessary to undergo scheduled maintenance on time. Every 15 thousand I change air filters, and after 50 thousand km fuel. Candles, as expected, after 20-30 thousand, then there will be no problems with the motor.
  2. Valentin, Krasnodar. Probably, I was one of the first who got a glorious South Korean car Hyundai Getz with a 1.1 liter engine and mechanical box. I have had a car since 2003, during which time I have already covered 280,000 kilometers. What can I say, even now the car feels cheerful and confident. I always purchased only original consumables, if possible, I replaced them myself. Never had any major engine problems. I changed the timing belt in time, it is best not to wait until its time comes. The compression in the cylinders is still normal, I also changed the wheel bearing, nothing more. I'm sure with quality maintenance Goetz will pass 400,000 and even more kilometers.
  3. Maxim, Moscow. Hyundai Getz took in 2004, 1.1 liter engine, mechanics. A mileage of 200,000 km, a power of 66 forces is enough for Moscow, the only thing is that there are no hydraulic lifters in the 1.1 liter modification, after every hundred thousand runs, you need to adjust the gaps. Recently I was at the service station, they changed the belt, the masters said that the motor was still in good condition, it will take at least 300 thousand, but then the prospects are not the best. The Getz 1.1 liter engine cannot be overhauled, the cylinder block cannot be lined, and piston replacement is also virtually impossible. Therefore, to all owners of this little "miracle", do not count on a resource of more than 300k.

The owners of the Hyundai Getz modification also confirm the high resource of the power unit, which reaches the mark of 300 thousand kilometers. Many owners are satisfied with the level and build quality of the motor, its unpretentiousness, stability and speed.

Power unit at 1.3

  1. Nikolay, Rostov. I had as many as two Hyundai Getz between 2002 and 2011. Initially, I started operating this car with a 1.3-liter engine under the hood. Very reliable, high-quality assembled power unit. Despite its poor protection against the penetration of dust and dirt, as well as the formation of rust on some internal components of the engine, the "heart" of the car works smoothly. I walked about 250 thousand kilometers, and just recently I sold an old car. It is necessary to change the engine oil in time, the 1.3 liter engine is unpretentious to the quality of gasoline. It works much quieter with a belt, but it has to be replaced after 60-65 thousand kilometers. The weak point is the crankshaft oil seals, which begin to leak oil ahead of schedule. Other than that, it's a perfect car.
  2. Alexander, Saratov. In general, having driven a Hyundai Getz for six years, I can say the following: the 1.3 liter engine is of high quality, but not without weaknesses. His common sore is the “zhor” of oil. You have to constantly add oil, also the oil drains through the valve cover gasket. I had to change, and more than once, the problem disappeared for a while, but then returned again. High-voltage wires often suffer for some unknown reason. Replacement costs a couple of thousand rubles, if you do not change, the speed starts to float, the engine is unstable at low speeds. What I want to say is that I won’t take a “Korean” a second time, it’s better to take a Toyota with mileage.
  3. Vasily, Volgograd. The 1.3 liter engine must first of all be protected from breaking the belt drive, otherwise expensive repairs will be required ahead of time. The belt is best changed after 60 thousand kilometers, then it begins to stretch and tear. Do not exclude the factor that in harsh climatic conditions, rubber cracks faster, which also later develop into a gap. If it breaks, the valves will suffer greatly, in general, a headache through the roof. On my car in 2004, I passed 220 thousand, after which I sold it. The resource of this engine is 250 thousand at best, from my own experience I will say that this is the worst modification of the motor from the entire line.

The compact city hatchback Hyundai Getz at one time became a real bomb. The Koreans managed to build a car that, in many respects, was not inferior to the Europeans, but was much cheaper. But the years always take their toll. And today we will discuss the weaknesses of this model. We will talk about the most popular average option. This is a 2008 car with 80,000 miles on it. Just such unkilled cars diverge on the Internet like hot cakes.

Under the hood of our Getz is the most common 1.4-liter engine with 97 horsepower. The box is mechanical. The issue price is 225 thousand rubles. Even after 8 years, the car looks fresh, especially from the outside. Of course, inside modern Koreans will be more presentable. Although, on the other hand, a simple interior is unpretentious in maintenance.

True, over time it all begins to creak. But they say that the new Gets is absolutely the same story. And for some reason, the car constantly fogs up windshield. Only the air conditioner saves, which, due to regular use, wears out quickly, and sometimes, in general. But more on that later.

To get an authoritative opinion about the car, we turned to the masters in the car service. And here's what they had to say about the 2008 Hyundai Getz. First of all, let's find out what sores you need to pay attention to when buying a used hatchback.

If we talk about the classic problems of the chassis, then experts indicate a design flaw in the wheel mount. Simply put, the wheel is mounted on weak studs that wear out quickly. Also, the front shock absorbers often fail. Other weaknesses of the running mechanics include weak steering rack, namely the leakage of the stuffing box, which subsequently turns into a repair of the entire rail.

Now the engine and transmission. In pre-styling cars (until 2005), every second automatic machine failed by 100 thousand (their repair costs approximately 40-50 thousand rubles). The problem of engines of those years -. But this is true only for cars with a mileage of more than 100 thousand kilometers. By the way, in the club of owners of Hyundai Getz often complain about the leakage of the coolant reservoir.

Over the years, the car did not have time to lose compression, but, compared to the new Getz, the power fell by 4-5%. That is, in fact, under the hood is not 97, but 93 horses, and acceleration to hundreds takes 0.2 seconds more than stated. Fuel consumption also increased by about half a liter.

The last in line is the electrics and other elements. Among the most common sores of Hyundai Getz electricians, mechanics note a weak wiring of the rear fog lamp. Due to poor insulation and location (right under the bumper), moisture constantly gets on the wires and the contacts are oxidized. The second drawback is poor quality constructive. In this connection, there is a constant fogging of the glasses.

According to statistics, almost all experienced Hyundai Getz suffer from another problem - the insecurity of the body from corrosion. After 5 years of operation, rust can be found under the hood, on the thresholds and the bottom of the doors. After 8 years, the geography of parts affected by corrosion will be even larger.

Now let's calculate how much you need to invest in a used car in order to make candy out of it. Let me remind you that our 2008 Hyundai Getz costs 225 thousand rubles. To bring it into perfect condition, not a lot of investments will be required - approximately 20 thousand rubles. This amount includes a large maintenance and repair, plus a local tint of a couple of body parts. Total - 245 thousand rubles. I must say that the car is quite liquid in the secondary market. An eight-year-old hatchback will lose no more than 9-10 percent of its value per year.

The Hyundai Getz was discontinued in 2011, replaced by the Hyundai i20. In a similar configuration with a 1.4-liter engine, it will be slightly more powerful, but slower than its predecessor, while being more modern inside and more economical (in the city, by about 1 liter). Price new car in the average configuration is 545 thousand rubles. As a result, the benefit when buying a used 8-year-old Hyundai Getz, taking into account the money invested in repairs, will be 300 thousand rubles.

Hyundai Getz 5dr is a class B front-wheel drive five-door hatchback. In the markets of some countries, the model is known as Hyundai Click and Hyundai TB.

The debut of the Getz model took place at the Geneva AW tosalon in 2002. Then, Hyundai presented a small, modern and stylish AW car to the public.

The high body (almost 1.5 meters), windshield and hood, forming an almost straight line, complex optics with polycarbonate caps, large mirrors, high landing, give the impression that the Getz body is one-volume and very much resembles a van.

The car is available in a variety of trim levels from a simple GL to an expensive GLS. The latter offers: electric drive, heated mirrors, height-adjustable steering column, central locking and air conditioning.

The salon is carefully thought out and very functional. Strict lines, excellent build quality, high-quality finishing materials make the AW car convenient and practical. In the back seat, which is unexpected for a small AW car, there is quite a lot of space, and the “vertical” landing allows you to stretch your legs forward. In addition, the roof of the AW car is almost flat. So there is enough headroom in the Getz. Rear seat passengers can individually adjust the inclination of their part of the seatback. However, the third headrest clearly indicates that the AW car is a five-seater. If necessary, the second row of seats folds down.

There are also many pleasant little things in the cabin that make the trip more comfortable. For example, above the driver's door is a case for sunglasses. A deep glove compartment, a shelf under the steering column, pockets in the front doors and backs of the front seats will accommodate a lot of useful things, which is very convenient and practical at the same time.

Under the floor of the luggage compartment is a tray with compartments for tools and other related trifles. The trunk is quite small. Rear seats that fold down in a ratio of 40:60 give additional volume to the trunk - of course, to the detriment of rear passengers. You can increase the luggage compartment up to 977 liters.

The design of the center console is dominated by rectangular and round shapes. Devices in silvery plastic edging with a pleasant green backlight are perfectly readable. The center console is turned towards the driver. The steering wheel and the original manual transmission lever are borrowed from the Hyundai Coupe. The location of the steering wheel is quite convenient, although it does not have height and depth adjustments.

Getz has good visibility. The wide panoramic windshield provides decent visibility in all directions. Looking back is a little worse. The glass of the fifth door is narrow, and massive rear pillars and rear seat headrests “eat up” part of the space.

The weakest of the Getz power units has a volume of 1.1 liters. This engine is no different. For those who like to ride with the breeze, units with a volume of 1.3 l / 82 hp are offered. and 1.6 l / 105 hp As an alternative to the "mechanics" is a 4-speed AW tomato box - an indispensable thing in traffic jams.

The suspension has a good combination of handling and ride. The car overcomes turns of almost any steepness AW smoothly and confidently. The brakes work very well.

The safety and comfort of the driver was the main concern of the designers when creating the Hyundai Getz. As standard, the AW car is equipped with airbags with multi-phase deployment. The blow of such pillows is softer. A deformable steering column and 3-point pretensioner seat belts add extra confidence. And the steel beams built into the doors will protect against side collisions. As options are offered: ABS, TRC, heated seats, etc.

In summary, we can say that with the release of Getz, Hyundai has come close to its European classmates in terms of such indicators as build quality and driving performance. This compact urban AW car harmoniously combines a wide variety of qualities that meet the tastes and preferences of European buyers, but its main quality is an affordable price that has been managed to be kept, plus a bonus in the form of a five-year warranty.

Behind the wheel #8 2003

PRODUCT FACE
"Hyundai Getz" was first shown at the Geneva AW tosalon in 2002. Produced with a hatchback body. On the Russian market, it is available in GL or GLS configurations. The first is simpler, only with a 1.3 liter gasoline engine (60 kW / 82 hp) and a manual 5-speed gearbox. The basic package includes a hydraulic booster, an immobilizer, a central lock, a driver's airbag, audio preparation and a full-size spare wheel (14"" wheels on steel rims). For such a car official dealers asking for $9500. If this version of the GL is equipped with air conditioning and power windows, it will cost $1,100 more ($10,600).

The GLS package already includes air conditioning and power windows, as well as heated electric mirrors, an adjustable steering column, fog lights and heated front seats. Together with the same 1.3-liter engine and manual transmission, it will cost $11,200.

Replacing the "mechanics" with "AW tomato" will cost an extra thousand ($12,200). The more powerful 1.6L engine (77kW/105hp) and manual transmission will cost $2,800 more ($14,000). Well, the most expensive option - with a powerful engine and an AW automatic gearbox will cost $15,000. 15 inches.

Finally, something else can be ordered from a dealer at a service station - an alarm, parking sensors, and more. Among this "other" let's pay attention to the protection of the engine crankcase. The ground clearance of Hyundai, according to our concepts, is modest - 135 mm, but the guarantee is impressive - 5 years (although the cost of scheduled maintenance bites).
Once we already introduced readers to the Goetz, equipped with a 1.3-liter engine and a 5-speed manual, now the object of our interest is a 1.6-liter car with an AW tomato.

WHAT IS INSIDE
It happens that in the first minutes of acquaintance you pay attention to the little things, but you evaluate the main thing later. Let it not seem strange, but the first thing that caught my eye in the "Goetz" was the simply designed instructions for the positions of the 4-speed "AW tomato" and ... the absence of an ashtray. Or should the dealer put it, but forgot? Okay, let's leave the smoking accessory alone and start looking for the main thing.

Very impressed in a small "Goetz" abundance of adjustments that allow the driver to comfortably accommodate in the workplace. The steering wheel can be raised and lowered; the driver's seat has separate height adjustment of the front and rear of the pillow, and the backrest is able to change the shape of the lumbar support. In general, if you have average anthropometric data, then most likely you will find not one, but several convenient positions. Not so great in the back. As befits an AW car in this class, the Getz will fit the two rear passengers slightly taller than average. The third will force them to make room.

Perhaps this is a coincidence, but there are four cupholders in the car - as if for two front and two rear riders. They are located in pairs: in front of and behind the gearshift and parking brake handles.

The back of the rear seat has three positions of inclination and is folded in parts. The trunk is about as expected. It has two convenient niches on the sides for small items, mesh and loops for securing cargo. But back to the driver's seat. At least in order to note a good view through a closely spaced and not very tilted windshield.

Traditionally and, by the way, the control buttons for windows and mirrors are conveniently located - on the door, but at the same time a very simple inner handle. The instrument cluster is easy to read, but the speedometer is digitized, frankly, not modestly. A niche for a double-height radio tape recorder (this is good), but for a standard radio tape recorder (it has already been installed in the car), for some reason it was necessary to slightly trim the decorative trim in the central part of the panel. In general, a moderately comfortable and modern AW car of a small class, without show off and bright signs. However...

HOW IT RIDES
Already after the first kilometers it became clear: driving performance "Hyundai" - one of its highlights. In addition to the 1.6-liter engine, the designers equipped the car with large low-profile 185 / 55R15 wheels. This in itself gives the character of the AW car a certain sharpness, makes its reactions more accurate. But the Goetz has another design feature that determines good handling - the lower steering rack.

With tighter controls, any AW car responds better to steering inputs, especially a small Getz. With increasing speed, this becomes more and more noticeable. There is practically no delay in steering, so there is no need to calculate lead times.
Somewhere after 100 km / h, the suspension is connected to the struggle for controllability. Here, however, she takes not with rigidity, but with small moves, due to which the rolls of the AW car are minimal. Meanwhile, the engine makes it clear that it has not really begun to work yet.

Well, we drowned the right pedal to the floor. The motor, now too well audible in the cabin, easily gives the car a speed that goes far beyond the limits of traffic rules. Up to 150 km / h, he does it at ease, up to 170 on the speedometer - already with laziness. Farther...
The set of speed is still ongoing, but now it is reminiscent of squeezing the entrails out of the AW car. Firstly, in the "kick-down" mode, "Getz" performs the task on the third and the motor starts to put pressure on the ears. Secondly, the short-travel suspension, which helped good handling at these speeds, requires a very good road, but how many of us have these? So even on small, as it seems, waves, the suspension of the 1.6-liter "Getz", squeezing out its "maximum speed", thoroughly shakes and not only tiring, but sometimes alarming.

And another interesting detail. If, with a calm ride, "AW tomato" seems very useful and pleasant, then with a more dynamic one, you just want to change it to a 5-speed manual. First of all, because with a 4-speed "AW tomato" during acceleration, the engine is heard too well.

With the brakes of our "Getz" everything is in order. Everywhere disc, front - ventilated. ABS works quite delicately, leaving the wheels a little slip.
It is generally accepted that small cute AW cars are loved by our lovely ladies. The Hyundai Getz is no exception - quite elegant and obedient to drive. But, having got acquainted with his character, you are convinced that he is more ambitious than it is customary to prescribe for a female AW car. "Goetz" is rather a typical city dweller with no clearly expressed sympathy for the weaker or stronger sex.

EVERY THIRD - UNDER THE SIGHT
Yuri Nechetov
Behind the wheel #10 2002

When buying a new car, 30% of AW car drivers in Europe prefer B-class city super-minis. This segment of the market accounts for about 4 million annual sales, but Hyundai has not been represented here so far. The new Goetz model bridged the gap in model range between "Athos" and "Accent" and henceforth claims the attention of every third buyer. What can seduce the novelty?
"Talented B" (Talented B or TV) - that's what the concept car was originally called, which received the serial name "Getz" at the current Geneva AW tosalon. The car was developed specifically for Europe and demonstrates a modern appearance - international, although not very memorable. About the relationship with the "Accent" reminds, perhaps, only the section of the headlights. The design is traditional for compact AW vehicles: a load-bearing body, front-wheel drive with a transverse power unit, front - MacPherson struts, rear - trailing arms connected by a transverse beam.

In an effort to provide space for passengers, city cars have become noticeably stouter in recent years, adding in height and width. However, only the Citroen C3 can boast of such a combination of transverse dimensions, like that of our debutant. Only 10 mm did not "grow" "Getz" to one and a half meters, although, by the way, it has an excellent drag coefficient Cx = 0.33 for a body of this form.

Comfort starts with a convenient entrance, so the five-door modification was shown first; a three-door hatchback will come later. A high roof and almost vertical rear pillars - the doors are more like gates, the size of the openings to match. Landing in front resembles a mini-van: a pair of two-meter giants of the 56th size can freely fit in comfortable seat cups. The driver, in addition to two standard seat adjustments, has the ability to change the height of its front and rear parts, as well as the amount of lumbar support. The steering column is also adjustable according to the angle of inclination.

The interior matches the exterior - stylish, but discreet. Inexpensive gray plastic of different shades dominates. There are two trim levels - GL or GLS; the latter includes fog lights, central locking with remote control, electric mirrors and all windows, air conditioning, audio system, power steering, EBD systems (force distribution between axles) and ABS, pretensioners and belt force limiters. Of the four airbags, two are frontal "smart" - if a child sits in front, they open softer, thanks to a smaller number of triggered squibs.

Behind, not too crowded, there will be three more men of medium size. The floor here is almost flat, and all the seat belts are three-point. The adjustable backrest of the split (40/60) seat, depending on the dimensions of the cargo, can be put forward, creating a spacious but relatively high platform, or folded forward together with the pillow, forming a deep hold with a volume of almost a cubic meter.

Modifications with gasoline engines of the Alpha series of 1.3 and 1.6 liters and a manual transmission ("AW tomato" are promised a little later) were the first to be presented - they will certainly be the most popular in Russia. The smaller of the engines, with three valves per cylinder (the same is on the Accent) provides the Hyundai Getz with moderate dynamic qualities, quite sufficient for a quiet ride in the city and on the highway - a herd of 82 "horses" is clearly hobbled by the fetters of ecology. Ambitious drivers will certainly prefer the new 1.6L sixteen-valve - its 105 hp. allow you to "exchange" "hundred" in less than ten seconds. Driving pleasure will be added by a well-acting gearbox with a short, almost toy-like handle and tenacious brakes with excellently functioning ABS. However, it is worth noting that both motors are quite vocal. Gourmet, perhaps, will complain about steering: light when parking, with increasing speed it is filled with some kind of artificial heaviness, in which back reactions sink without a trace. However, there is also a positive point in this - sharp steering movements at speed are unsafe.

The powerful engine will fit the oversized 185/55R15 Michelin wheels - the standard (for the GLS) Hankook 175/65R14 will run to the limit. Modest tires 155 / 80R13 are designed for the cheapest modification of the GL 1.1 l - its engine is based on the Athos liter unit. The fourth engine in the range is a modern one and a half liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 80 hp. With. with intercooler and common rail system.

Hyundai Getz 1.3 GLS: Evolutionary

The new Hyundai Getz is the first pro-European AW car from Korea. His appearance is the result of the work of designers who settled in the newly built Hyundai studio in Frankfurt. It is felt: the appearance of the car is at the forefront of modern AW tomobile fashion without any hint of nationality - this is to please everyone.

It is now becoming quite clear that the Korean AW car industry has followed the Japanese path. And Hyundai is the harbinger of a new era. This sounds, perhaps, a little loud, but it most accurately reflects the process that accompanies the development of AW car manufacturing in the Land of the Morning Calm.

At one time, the Japanese "left" on the fact that they flooded the market with inexpensive, but extremely reliable AW cars. Advanced users accused Japanese cars of being too simple and unpretentious, but snapped them up like hot cakes. However, with each new generation of "Toyota" and "Nissan" became more and more refined, gradually turning into "Euromobiles".

Short overhangs - a nod to the city streets: when parking, without prior worries, you can jump onto a moderately high sidewalk; and the almost single-volume layout is designed to "push" the cabin, along the way to facilitate landing and improve visibility.

Get in the car and really comfortable. But it is even more convenient to sit inside, both for the driver and any of the passengers - this is if the trip is planned for four. The fifth will be superfluous - the rear seat in width is optimal for two people. Nevertheless, you can try to squeeze back and to the maximum, since the number of seat belts in the back corresponds to just three riders.

And yet let's look at Getz from the point of view of the driver and the owner. The interior of the car is very welcoming and friendly. First of all, the workmanship of every detail, large and small, pleases: even though inexpensive materials are used in the Goetz's interior as a whole, everything is put together with the greatest precision and care. Minimal gaps and elements that fit perfectly with each other make you remember much more expensive and famous AW cars.

The design of the center console seems to be drawn with a compass and a ruler - everything that is not rectangular is necessarily round. Round, easy-to-read instruments in silvery plastic edging, round and comfortable knobs for controlling the heating and ventilation system, a semicircular visor above the dashboard. Everything else is entirely rectangles and intersecting straight lines. Strict but cute. A curious fact: the "aluminized" center console is turned towards the driver - is it really a hint of sportiness? Why not - after all, the steering wheel and the original lever of the manual gearbox are borrowed from the Hyundai Coupe!

But before starting the trip, we will study a little more other pleasant features of the Goetz salon. And there are plenty of them. Here, for example, is a case for sunglasses, which is located directly above the driver's door. And here is the hook on the back of the front passenger seat, on which, after visiting the supermarket, you can hoist a bag of groceries. There are also smaller hooks above the rear doors - it would be very nice to hang "hangers" with a suit on them. An umbrella can be attached under the steering column - there is even a special shelf provided. And we also found pockets of different capacities on the doors and chairs, where maps or magazines could well be left.

Finally, let's look into the trunk - it, as one would expect, is not bottomless. And in the literal sense, too: under its floor you can find a pallet with compartments for tools and other related trifles. Rear seats that fold down in a ratio of 40:60 give additional volume to the trunk - of course, to the detriment of rear passengers. The latter, however, have every right to make themselves comfortable by adjusting the rest of the back as they please. Adjustment range - "four clicks".

Finally - behind the wheel! Ringing 1.3-liter engine with 82 hp. gives the car dynamics, more than sufficient in the city. Getz easily reaches 100-120 km / h, but then the rate of acceleration drops. Far from the last role in matters of acceleration is played by a manual gearbox with "stretched" gears. And yet, for an urban AW car, the dynamic characteristics of the Goetz should be regarded as satisfactory.

In regular, that is, again, urban, modes, the car is very convenient and the fact that moderately sensitive steering does not force you to overstrain with each rebuild: Hyundai does not show the slightest hint of sportiness, but gives a feeling of complete mutual understanding. And the barely noticeable, at the level of nit-picking, lethargy of reactions to steering turns can be generously forgiven - and he will explain this with excellent smoothness for such a small car. The final touch to the portrait of the AW car is the brakes. Precise, efficient and very clear from the first touch of the pedal.
By the way, Hyundai also has a more powerful Getz 1.6 with a 105-horsepower engine, which promises to be even more dynamic. And as an alternative to the "mechanics" a 4-speed AW tomato box is offered - an indispensable thing in traffic jams.

So what do we end up with? In the eyes of the layman, Korean-made cars have long remained the quintessence of the concept of "a lot of AW cars for little money." However, Hyundai Getz in no way fits this definition. Its price, of course, is low. But he himself is small, because it is a compact urban hatchback with a length of less than four meters.

Representing a new round in the evolution of Korean AW cars, the small Hyundai can be counted among the epochal AW cars. Having retained the main quality inherent in any Korean car - an affordable price, and having acquired such an interesting bonus as a five-year warranty, Getz, in fact, changed citizenship. Now he is his own in Europe, which means he will be in demand and loved. Or at least respect.

Hyundai Getz 1.6 GLS: Bring tomatism to AW

Hyundai Getz is a typical "Korean": a lot of AW car for your money. We were convinced of this for the hundredth time during a test drive of the car in the basic version, with a 1.3-liter engine and a manual transmission. Neutral-modern design, high-quality assembly, excellent running characteristics. And with all this, the "budget" price, starting at $ 9,490. In general, solid reasons to rejoice.

And then - on the rise. A car with the same engine, but in an improved configuration and "AW tomato" will cost $11,690. There is also a more powerful Getz with a 1.6-liter engine. Moreover, with the "mechanics" it turns into a five-minute hot hatchback (9.6 seconds to 100 km / h, by the way!), Which costs $ 13,490. And at the top of the pyramid is Getz 1.6 GLS with AW tomatic transmission. It is equipped much more solidly than the car that you saw in the February issue of "Wheels". Then we had a hydraulic booster, an adjustable steering column, a driver's airbag, air conditioning, power accessories and heated seats. Now they have added ABS, a front passenger airbag, an on-board computer and a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gearshift lever. Fourteen-inch steel wheels have been replaced with 15-inch alloy wheels, audio preparation has been improved. Outside, the car is decorated with a rear spoiler and fog lights. As a result, AW car has risen in price by $4200. It seems like a reasonable fee for a comprehensive increase in "cubes", equipment and for getting rid of unnecessary manual labor. But how does it all work?

Inside, the changes are small. Naturally, the "paw" of the gearbox selector with the button for forced shutdown of the highest, fourth, stage (the so-called "overdrive") catches the eye. The steering wheel looks and feels nicer, and there were no complaints about its shape before. A display appeared on the dashboard between the tachometer and speedometer dials, displaying information about fuel consumption, distance traveled and outside air temperature. That's all the news.

The sensation was presented literally by the first centimeters of the way. How Getz kicks off! With zero delay to shift the accelerator! Just like a mechanic! And with wild wheel slip. There is no such speed on machines with "AW tomatoes" several classes higher! However, then everything falls into place: with an increase in speed, inhibition in reactions and delays in switching appear. And in the region of 100 km / h, to get a noticeable acceleration, you just need to put the gas pedal on the floor and patiently wait for the kick-down to work. Which is to be expected. However, the start ... In many ways, such agility is the merit of a high-torque engine, which spins very cheerfully even at the top.

Otherwise, this is the Getz already familiar to us - with reliable and calm handling and excellent smoothness for such a baby. What else? Yes, ABS. It works clearly, without panicking ahead of time, but not encouraging significant wheel slips either.
"Automatic" Getz can be safely recommended as the best option for urban use. That's just the price makes you think: after all, for this money you can find more serious cars. Elantra, for example.

BEHIND THREE DOORS
Maxim Sachkov
Behind the wheel #5 2005

Hyundai Getz"Pretty!" - the wife smiled when she saw the three-door Hyundai Getz. I wonder what she liked more - a fresh look of the body, not burdened by two "extra" doors, or a pretty green color? Perhaps all together. Still, the Italians (the design of the Goetz was made by them) know better than anyone what the signora wants.

“Look how cute the seats are, with red accents!” I won't lie, I like it too. However, the same upholstery, pseudo-carbon elements, leather steering wheel and gear selector are also present in the interior of expensive five-door versions. Of course, a woman will definitely check if the mirrors are built into the sun visors. Yes, dear, and in the passenger side too.

“And in the Zhiguli you can see better through the rear window.” This comparison is not in favor of most modern AW cars, the Getz is no exception. True, in the five-door version, the review is slightly wider - the test hatchback has more modest side windows. Another puncture - there is no rear wiper. The stern is quickly splashed, you are guided only by the exterior mirrors. True, they cover a fairly large sector, and are also equipped with electric heating.

"What a wide door - it's convenient to climb in." True, only in tight parking lots you will have to squeeze through a narrow gap behind a massive “gate”. There are fewer doors, but the same amount of space in the rear seats; making your way to the second row, you understand why passengers do not like three-doors so much. A useful option will sweeten the life of the gallery a little: the rear passenger presses a small pedal, and the front seat moves forward, freeing the exit.

“Some kind of motor is sharp, the car just takes off.” I understand I didn't like it. You will have to get used to such a “hard” setting of the gearbox torque converter. At first, it is not possible to even start without squealing the wheels. Apparently, for the sake of high dynamic qualities, they decided to sacrifice smoothness by reducing the slip of the torque converter, which, we note, burns precious fuel. True, there is nothing more to blame the box for - the gears switch smoothly, in the kick-down mode it quickly jumps to the lower steps. Of course, the “Korean” is not able to argue with really powerful cars, but the driver does not feel defective.

But the appetite of the "Goetz" with a 1.6-liter engine and "AW tomato" is not the most modest - in the city there are about 12 liters.

It's a pity that the three-door "Gets" are delivered to us only in top versions: they can be called affordable with a fair stretch. After all, this model attracts most buyers not only with its good looks and good dynamic characteristics, but also with a low price. Basic five-door 1.3-liter cars start at $10,000. Maybe three-doors in inexpensive trim levels will appear on the Russian market? In the meantime, dear, let's take the subway - we'll save up.

Hyundai Getz 1.6 GLS AUTO is not a very practical, but pretty AW car. The definition of “female” is immediately glued to such.

Good dynamic qualities, stability and controllability, smooth operation of "AW tomato", a large doorway.
- There are no cheap equipment, uncomfortable landing in the rear seats, no wiper on the rear window.

Hyundai Getz. Eurasian
Anatoly Fomin
Behind the wheel #12 2005

When Hyundai-Getz entered the Russian market in 2002, he was destined to become a bestseller. Fashionable European appearance, good assembly, good driving performance and the price of the base model is about 10 thousand dollars - there are fewer dangerous competitors with such a set than fingers on one hand.

Differences in the front - new headlights, hood, bumper, fenders. Hyundai Getz The numbers speak for themselves: in the first nine months of 2005, 11,456 "Getz" were sold, for the whole year, according to forecasts, no less than 15,000 will be obtained. By the way, in Europe this is the most popular Hyundai model - since 2002, more than 600 thousand cars have been sold, or 80% of the total production. In general, the updated Getz, which entered the market in October, the predecessor prepared a good start.

ROUTES SPANISH

There is not much time to get acquainted with the novelty: the road from the airport to the hotel, and the next day the way back, which, however, you can choose a longer one ... But still, you can’t sort out all the options out of five engines and two gearboxes. What first? With the new 1.4L engine? No, something exotic is better ... For example, a turbodiesel. In the appendage - a fashionable red interior, leather inserts on the steering wheel and gear knob. Looks very elegant.

A cavalcade of multi-coloured "Goetz", picking up speed, rushes away from the airport. The main thing is not to lag behind and not get confused in the interchanges. It’s easy to start off, the gears switch clearly, the engine is “lucky” somewhere from 1700 rpm and does not make too much noise even at the maximum 4500 rpm, although in normal mode it makes little sense to spin it above 3500. In general, he did not lag behind, but on a protracted climb he “made” someone. But gasoline cars seem to be more powerful ...

The wide highway gave way to a narrow serpentine, and confidence diminished somewhat. The Getz is good on the road, but the light steering with a vague neutral position makes it very careful to choose the trajectory in fast corners. It is rarely possible to pass a turn without additional corrective movements.

Turbodiesel with a capacity of 65 or 81 kW is not yet planned to be delivered to Russia. Sixty kilometers flew by unnoticed, and here is the parking lot at the hotel. What will the computer say? It turns out 6.5 l / 100 km. What about petrol colleagues? Whoa, nine! It seems that they didn’t drive much ... It’s a pity, but we won’t see diesel “Goetz” in Russia.

PLEASANT ACQUAINTANCE

What to choose in the morning? Of course, the new "one and four" with a manual. And the route is longer. Here is the outskirts of Barcelona, the highway going into the mountains and ... a traffic jam. However, to scare a Muscovite with congestion is like a hedgehog you know what. While we were standing in the tunnel, “just in case the firefighter” decided to clarify the detour route on the map and was surprised - a backlight appeared in the glove box.

The new version of the dashboard does not have a coolant temperature gauge. Instead, there are two lamps: blue - cold, red - overheating. What kind of cork is this? Only about 20 minutes and again free. Just in the right lane, an old Discovery expired and a puddle of oil. But there was time to evaluate the convenience of starting and driving at low speeds. This "urban" exercise is performed without problems.

Audio control panel on the steering wheel. New interior trim options - with red or blue accents. And when we finally managed to accelerate, it turned out that the steering wheel on the gasoline version was clearer. Although the feeling does not leave that the “pre-styling” cars were more obedient. New engine not only high-torque, but also powerful enough - it is not difficult to change lanes to the left even in heavy traffic. Up to 3500 rpm the motor is quite quiet, above its noise dominates even at high speed. However, non-European "long" gears allow you to stay in acoustic comfort up to 130-140 km / h.

Three-jet nozzles are a good argument in a dispute with dirt. The 1.4 liter engine is the same as the new KIA Rio. Here is a coffee stop. Time still suffers, and therefore you can take an economical Goetz with a modernized 66-horsepower 1.1-liter engine. By the way, compared to the previous one, it has an increased compression ratio (from 9.6 to 10.1), a slight increase in power (by 2 hp), and, of course, Euro IV requirements are met. Now such machines will be offered on the Russian market. Go? Here is the first surprise. Up to 80 km / h, the dynamics are quite acceptable, apparently due to the larger gear ratio of the main pair. Having accelerated to 130 km / h, I found that the cabin is almost as quiet as in a more powerful AW car. (This was later, on the plane, looking at the specification, I found out that not only the main pairs differ, but also the numbers of fourth and fifth gears.) The Goetz is not “sharpened” for maximum dynamics - even with a weak engine it will be comfortable and economical on the road. Although the very first long climb will show its true power ... With a small engine, the “cargo” skill to overtake on the move does not hurt.

Contrary to the worst expectations, the road to the airport was almost empty. A beautiful highway winds its way through the hills, periodically opening up views of the majestic and bizarre mountain of Montserrat. Why is a pleasant acquaintance always short?

DRY RESIDUE

The Hyundai Getz update can hardly be called a major upgrade. But there are differences not only in appearance, but also in character. Having adopted the European design and chassis settings for the first Getz, Hyundai engineers now seem to have decided to play back. The new AW car in the European version turned out to be a little more comfortable, but noticeably “further” from the driver. Yes, and the appearance has become less expressive and more Korean. It is unlikely that this change will suit absolutely everyone, especially among the owners of the previous car. But for newly arrived fans, the advertising slogan "As good as it Getz" (it differs from the English idiom "It doesn't get better" by one letter) will be fair. At least considering the price.

THE SCIENCE OF MARKETING

You do not believe advertising? And in vain, this is the truth. Just not all. The new Goetz is indeed cheaper than the old one. The base price of the car is $10,190 - $120 less! You will receive a car without air conditioning and ABS, on steel 14-inch wheels with hubcaps, one airbag, a folding split rear seat, a trunk shelf and audio preparation. Only now instead of the 1.3 l / 82 hp engine. - 1.1 l / 66 hp

The 1.3 liter engine is no more, instead of it there is a noticeably more frisky sixteen-valve 1.4 liter. With it, the price starts from $11,390. A well-equipped car with “mechanics” will cost $13,390.

However, the most expensive three-door version with a 1.6-liter engine and AW automatic transmission costs $ 15,890 - only $ 50 more than the previous one. And with the "mechanics" and at all the same, $ 14,890. An example of competent marketing - the price fork has not changed much, but potentially the most purchased AW cars have become noticeably more expensive. Profit above all!

Hyundai Getz II: Slender eyes

It may seem to you and me that the self-confident little Getz, who is quite accomplished and successful in our country, is still young and hot. three-year second-hand, how - on you! - Koreans seem to have changed the car
But in Korea, time flies faster. Before the first Getz in Russia had time to really move into the category of the newest three-year second-hand, how - on you! - Koreans seem to have changed the car. Moreover, it seems that there are not so many changes - well, the lighting technology is different; well, the bumpers are not the same - but the impression of the AW car is completely different. Getz used to frown his brows - and now he is making eyes!

This, you know, is not some banal make-up. It's a whole gender reassignment operation! The new design of the front part completely transformed the exterior of the AW car: neutral and calm, but at the same time quite expressive and - quite definitely - the boyish appearance has gone into oblivion. The machine changed, how to say it, polarity: from now on, Getz is a female creature. And after all, what is curious: the girls liked the new look of Goetz, but the representatives of the male part of civilization who fell under my survey, on the contrary, agreed that "it was better." Let me express myself in the same spirit: yes, it was better! But this is purely a matter of taste and individual preference. If you try to judge objectively, then the car has definitely become newer and, therefore, more modern. And this is good and right - without any "probably" there.

And what else has changed under the pressure of fleeting Korean time? I'll go to the salon. You need to have a good visual memory to identify a new instrument panel, a refreshed steering wheel with a slight retouch in the hub area, and a center console that has extended into a shallow niche. What did you forget? Here is quite an innovation: in the glove compartment now - let there be light!

From more: pads on the door armrests (or is it window sills?) Shaped like aluminum. But you will not see this in the photographs: decorations are not provided in the simple configuration of the GL. And how was it before? I looked into the pre-styled car in the GLS version - the last one left at the dealer - and saw the carbon fiber trim on the door. And yet more under the "plastic", rather than under the "coal". With "aluplastik" it will be better.

Another one: in expensive trim levels, the door handles were covered with chrome - nice. And here is the most noticeable sign of freshness, from the previously unseen - color trim! Now the interior can be powerfully "decorated" or "blue", giving more color to the fabric inserts on the seats and door trim, as well as trimming the gearshift knob and steering wheel rim to match. Fervently! Especially if the color gets into the body of the car, it is clear that in this situation it should be either red or blue. I recommend red - it's more elegant and, according to statistics, safer.

According to official information, something in Goetz has changed in terms of technology - but, basically, a little bit. In particular, the suspension was slightly reconfigured - a drop of sedative was dropped there: the smoothness of the ride improved slightly, the sharpness in the reactions slightly decreased. And at the level of sensations, the car is still perceived as a perfectly balanced urban vehicle: moderately hard, but quite comfortable, while clear and responsive in the steering wheel.

We got a Getz with a new 1.4-liter engine with 16 valves and 97 ELs, which replaced the 1.3-liter 12-valve engine. Replaced - and did the right thing! A dozen and a half forces have not yet harmed anyone, and even more so for a light city AW tomobilchik! "Geshka", as its owners affectionately call it, cheered up in earnest: the torsion is excellent, and the moment is in place. The car moves confidently and demonstrates decent elasticity - in general, it allows you to be as fast as you want in the city. Yes, if “one and four” brings down like that, then how should “one and six” take revenge? Will definitely have to try! However, I think the difference in dynamics will not be so stunning. By and large, the new motor is the best option for Goetz: with it, the price tag comes out kind of like a human face, and in terms of power, the car fits well into our taxation, falling into the cherished category of up to a hundred forces. Do you think that the buyer of a foreign car does not care about taxes? No matter how: the representative of the dealer who gave us the car specifically designated this fact as significant for the “Getzovods”. And one cannot but agree with this.

Working capital
Igor Kozlov
Behind the wheel #11 2007

The reasons for the popularity of "Hyundai-Getz" are not only in the successful combination of Italian design and Korean quality at an affordable price, but also in a harmonious and modern filling, Igor Kozlov believes. Photo: Alexander Kulnev.
The Russian market owes a boom in sales of AW B-class cars, including Getzu. Its appearance in 2002 (see the history of the model) caused a real stir - the queue for some configurations stretched for a year! Today, of course, the demand is not so great (the consumer has cooled off in anticipation of a new generation?), But cars in AW tosalons do not stagnate. Yes, and in the secondary market, decent options like hot cakes, and only with a slight loss of the original price. For AW, then in 2004 they ask from 230,000 rubles, and in 2006 - 260,000 - 300,000!

The salon (in the AW photo after restyling) is not bad in design and is made very soundly - nothing creaks or rattles even with runs under 100 thousand km.

The Goetz is no less popular in Europe, so it was not deprived of the attention of EuroNCAP. According to their crash test method (recall, a blow from a speed of 64 km / h on a deformable barrier with a 40% overlap), the model earned four stars. A worthy result, and even in regular operation the body is doing well: if there were no accidents, you are unlikely to find rust on it. But the bumpers, it happens, "shed". In the city crowd, they are often applied and, at first glance, painlessly. But in winter, moisture penetrates under the paint through microcracks and, freezing, removes the coating, like an eggshell. But such defects are visible.

Since 2005, the temperature gauge has given way to a pair of lamps. The red "thermometer" on the tachometer scale will be the first to report overheating when the radiator bursts. It is not easy to check the condition of the bottom with a ground clearance of 116–135 mm (depending on tires and the presence of crankcase protection) without a lift. Therefore, when buying, it is useful to visit the nearest dealer for diagnostics. When checking, we carefully examine the corrugation of the exhaust system. It is not difficult to damage it (it is located low), and even without extraneous “help”, it often burns out.

In the power system of some versions (here the G4EA engine), the emergency fuel cut-off valve (shown in a circle) is sometimes triggered by strong road shaking. ALPHA&EPSILON

In addition to the auditory rejection of the "bubbling" exhaust, the leaky corrugation causes engine malfunctions, because the rear oxygen sensor is installed after it. The sensor cannot “smell” the part of the gases that has gone “to the left”, therefore it starts to give an incorrect signal to the engine control unit, which, in turn, goes into emergency mode and ignites check engine. In this case, the converter is worst of all: after all, the controller, not knowing the true composition of the exhaust, has the right to make a mistake with the quality of the mixture, which is not good for the converter. Therefore, it is more expensive to postpone the replacement of the receiving pipe (the corrugation is welded into it). If you have welding skills, and the pipe itself is not badly damaged, it makes sense to change only the corrugation - you can find a suitable size (45x205) for 400 rubles. Keep in mind, the warranty on the catalytic converter is less than on the AW in general - only a year with no mileage limit.

With the G4ED (1.6 liter) engine, the Getz is very nimble - 105 horses carry 985 kg of curb weight. The main thing is to change the candles in time (under the silver lining) and prevent overheating. We carefully monitor the temperature of the engine! True, after the restyling, its pointer in the dashboard was gone, but instead of it, there are now two lamps on the tachometer field, one of which (with a red “thermometer”) signals overheating. And it can happen due to bursting plastic radiator tanks and, accordingly, the loss of coolant. This happens, according to dealers, from the effects of chemicals that are poured over our roads in winter. When replacing, we recommend finding a more resistant radiator of a new model, which has been going into spare parts since this year.

Up to 70 thousand km, you can not think about repairing the suspension, of course, if you do not fly through the curbs. Hub bearings are also afraid of impacts, which live up to 150 thousand km in sparing conditions. On the AW part, an emergency fuel cut-off valve was installed, designed to work in case of an accident, but it often shuts off the supply during any strong shaking. It is not difficult to return it to its original state, you just need to feel it under the rubber cap and press the cocking button (the valve itself is on the right mudguard).

Because of the small ground clearance the resonator often suffers from bumps, but more often the exhaust corrugation, so it is better to protect the crankcase. But the tubes are well hidden. The 1.4L engine (G4EE, see Model History) is very critical to fuel quality, which sometimes manifests itself during cold starts. The first 15-25 seconds of operation, the revolutions "walk" from 700 to 3000, and in some cases the engine even stalls. When you restart or when the AW oscillations fade, everything returns to normal, but an unpleasant aftertaste remains. There is nothing wrong with that - it's just that the control unit is honestly trying to meet strict environmental standards, and on our, to put it mildly, mediocre fuel, it does not always succeed. We solve the problem by changing the gas station or more radically - changing the firmware of the control unit from the basic identifier TFE6I41 to the modified TFE6I42 for Russian realities. It takes dealers 20-25 minutes to do this, and the work is done free of charge (of course, if the car is under warranty).

In an H-beam rear suspension, parts last surprisingly long. The exception is shock absorbers, they are sometimes not enough for 80 thousand km. The rear brakes can also be disc. They suffer from bad gasoline and candles, requiring the replacement of the previously prescribed 30 thousand km, but cases of valves hanging from resins in the fuel on Goetz are rare. However, dealers recommend periodically flushing injectors without dismantling to remove carbon deposits from the combustion chambers and wash resins from valve guides and valve stems. Other malfunctions on the motors of the Alpha and Epsilon series are random.

Praying for coolness and receiving a refusal, the first thing we check under the hood is the evaporator tube with a yellow sticker. The fistula is more often formed on its bend from the back. There are no objective statistics for the only U-Engine diesel in the range. Cars with him were not officially delivered here, and those that ended up in Russia are few. Therefore, taking this option in pursuit of efficiency is not worth it. It's a shame: in the West, according to our information, there are no problems with these motors.

AUTOMATIC SHUTTER

Clutch life, as always, is highly dependent on driving style. There are known cases of replacing the driven disk for 15 thousand km, but basically the node serves at least 100 thousand km. There are almost no problems with a manual gearbox, except that after 120 thousand km, the drive oil seals may require replacement. The automatic machine, on the other hand, sometimes suffers from malfunctions, and the installers of radio equipment are considered the culprits (and you won’t even think!) As you know, Goetz is not equipped with it, leaving the consumer to choose the sound to his liking, with which he turns to the masters. Some of them do not bother with careful laying of wires (they are still not visible behind the interior details), and in addition, they cut the factory gasket routes, one of which goes to the “overdrive” button in the lever. It is worth accidentally tightening the wire - and its compensation loop will decrease, which sooner or later will lead to breaking the wire at the bend (the lever does not stand still). Building wires is a simple matter, but in order to get to the place of repair, you need to disassemble half the cabin.

The same bleak procedure awaits when the center console bulbs burn out (baseless 12V, 1.2W). Korean light bulbs fail surprisingly quickly, perhaps not shaking. The main thing when replacing is not to lose or break the six caps for attaching the lining, otherwise you risk “breeding the crickets”.

It happens that the seat heating buttons fail. Such a disease is easy to prevent: clean the cabin regularly and find another place for a damp umbrella. Also avoid getting the remote control on the driver's door wet, although it is a little more tolerant of water procedures.

FROM THE WORLD BY A STRING

The suspension of the car is quite tenacious. If breakdowns are avoided, then up to 70-80 thousand km you can not even think about repairs. By this time, as a rule, stabilizer bushings are suitable and rear shock absorbers may be asked. Stabilizer struts live for 90 thousand km, and silent blocks, front shock absorbers, ball bearings and steering tips often step over the hundred thousandth barrier. On AW, then with the power steering, after 60 thousand km, the tip of the pressure line hose sometimes sweats along the rolling. If at the same time there are no noticeable streaks, then you can take your time with the replacement.

The front brake pads last an average of 30-40 thousand km, and the front discs last twice as long as the rear pads. On the AW part, then (with a 1.6 liter engine) the rear mechanisms can be disc, their pads can withstand 50-60 thousand. There are no special problems with the brakes, even cases of warping of discs and wedging of calipers are rare. In general, the car turned out to be successful. We believe that the army of thousands of owners was not disappointed in the choice.

H yundai Getz was exclusively front-wheel drive, and the drive design turned out to be extremely simple. So the choice is only between automatic transmission and five-speed mechanics. And if the CV joints and drives are quite reliable here (in any case, up to runs of 200-250 thousand), then the gearboxes are all with surprises.

If you hear that Getz manual transmissions were unsuccessful only before restyling, then do not believe these stories. M5AF3 boxes are not particularly good on cars of any model year. There are no problems with the design - after all, this is the legacy of Mitsubishi with minimal changes, but the execution is lame.

Pictured: Hyundai Getz 5-door "2002–2005

Mostly bearings fail. The release bearing often starts to howl at runs of a little more than 60 thousand, and an untimely replacement is fraught not only with wear on the petals of the basket and damage to the shutdown fork, but also with damage to the box body. The next in line are the bearings of the primary and secondary shafts. On the bulk of the machines, only a hundred thousand mileage, the input shaft bearings are already noisy. The output shaft starts to make noise later, but it starts almost inevitably, so if you repair the manual transmission, then you need to change everything.

Due to oil contamination, both the differential and the gearbox gears suffer. If you delay the repair, then often there is nothing to repair: a jammed differential will break the case and the main pair.

The reason for rapid wear lies not only in the low quality of the original parts, but also in the quality of the oil seals: the box is leaking, and the oil level must be monitored both ways. Owners of cars with 1.6 and 1.4 liter engines were especially unlucky: they have their own boxes, different from boxes with Accent and other Hyundai, so spare parts are in short supply.

The only reliable way to repair the box is a bulkhead with the installation of new bearings. To reduce the cost of repairs, “second-hand” parts are often used, since the original shafts and gears are not that expensive (5-8 thousand rubles per shaft), but the price of a complete manual transmission bulkhead can easily be higher than the price of the car. The standard repair option is to install a new shaft with used gears, for example, from a more or less live Accent box. Then (in the case of 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines), everything is assembled into the old box body. Boxes for engines of 1.1 and 1.3 liters can also be left with an "accent" case. Such repairs cost 12-30 thousand rubles, which is quite acceptable for most.

In addition to problems with the manual transmission, there are troubles with its drive. It initially does not please with particular clarity, but with age, the quality of switching deteriorates due to cable stretching, breakage of the backstage ball joint latches and simply wear of the ball joint. The wear of the axis of the triangular lever of longitudinal movements and the wear of its hinges also greatly affects the clarity of switching. In advanced cases, you have to change the lever itself, since it is still supplied in spare parts and costs less than a thousand rubles.

Pictured: Hyundai Getz 5-door "2005–2010

Cables also cause a lot of trouble. Their price is quite high, about 5,000 rubles, but you can get by with a little bloodshed: basically, shock-absorbing thrust bushings in the engine compartment wear out. These parts will cost less than 500 rubles, but to replace them, you will have to remove the cables, and look for the bushings themselves in the catalogs for the Mitsubishi Lancer IX (part codes 2460A108 and 2460A109). By the way, bearings and synchronizers are also suitable from the Mitsubishi manual transmission, but which ones, experts keep at heart.

If you have the hope that the automatic transmission is more reliable than the mechanics here, then I will disappoint you. In principle, boxes of the KM family of the A4AF3 / A4BF2 series on 1.3 and 1.4 liter engines and boxes of the A4CF1 / A4CF2 series with 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines are considered quite reliable. But in practice, closer to a hundred thousand mileage, boxes of release until 2008, and especially boxes of pre-styling cars until 2006, begin to act up. More recent automatic transmissions go much longer before the first problems appear, at least 180-200 thousand kilometers, and individual copies of the boxes can feel quite normal with runs over 300.

From a constructive point of view, there are a minimum of shortcomings, and there are no obvious weak points, or they appear at high mileage. But the A4AF3 box was recycled in the process of transferring production to Hyundai facilities, and the debugging of production affected the quality. A small resource of solenoids and sensors, overheating due to a weak cooling system and associated oil leaks adversely affect the operation of the automatic transmission. It can be assumed that most of the first releases of automatic machines of all series have already undergone an average repair, at least with the repair of the valve body, and for those who like to drive “to the last”, the box has also undergone a complete overhaul.

In addition to the problems associated with a drop in oil level, oil starvation and valve body failures, there are a number of unpleasant features. For example, a weak differential and gas turbine engine blocking pads, which, with aggressive driving, can be erased to an adhesive layer after hundreds of thousands of mileage. Yes, and external oil lines have unsuccessful corroding clamps, which sometimes leads to oil leaks.

The older A4AF3 / A4BF2 boxes, which are mainly found on cars before 2007, are a legacy of Mitsubishi, produced by Hyundai.

The weak point in the mechanical part is the Shell/Kickdown drum. Under heavy loads, it breaks its splines, and the drum friction pack usually burns out first.

There are also many problems with the Direct Clutch drum. He breaks the 046 bushing, especially on pre-styling machines with an A4AF3 box, which leads to a serious oil leak, and usually the oil pump is also damaged.

With excessively active movement, the Overdrive hub bearing breaks early enough.

Typical malfunctions of the valve body - failure of valves 364420, damage to wiring and speed sensors.

Drum breakdowns, unfortunately, happen often, and with runs of about 200 thousand, they will almost certainly manifest themselves even among more or less careful drivers. The 046 bushing fails less frequently than the Shell drum, but the consequences are noticeably more expensive.

The newer automatic transmission A4CF1 / A4CF2, which appeared after 2005, began to be widely used on Getz only after 2008. Its early releases, which can be found with a 1.6-liter engine on dorestyling, cause a lot of trouble. But the versions after 2008 have practically no mechanical problems. Breakdowns of the valve body of this box and its electronics are relatively budgetary, although the box still does not differ in particular durability and trouble-free. Before a major repair with the replacement of the gas turbine engine blocking pad, most of the solenoids and the revision of the friction clutches and the pump bushing, on average, you can count on 200-250 thousand kilometers. The main mechanical problem is the early failure of the oil pump due to poor oil filtration and rare oil changes. Also regularly during operation at a standard oil change interval, the linear pressure solenoid fails. The harbinger of his replacement is the blows when turning on the D and R modes.

It is also worth checking the wiring of the solenoids, which is quite fragile here and is very afraid of vibrations (change the engine mounts and gearboxes in time). A block of shifter solenoids rarely fails completely, but the chances are still far from zero. The price, in general, is ridiculous - about 10 thousand rubles for the entire “bed”, but few people change them, and if you have already changed the linear solenoid, the wiring is intact, but there are still shocks, then check it at the stand.

To improve the operation of this box, it is worth installing an external oil filter. With him, she becomes noticeably more reliable.

The general rule is not to buy cars with automatic transmission before restyling, especially cars with a 1.6 liter engine. If you need an automatic, then look at cars with A4CF1 / A4CF2 boxes after 2008 with a 1.4 liter engine. It will be a relatively reliable and budget option.

Buying even a late version of the A4AF3 / A4BF2 automatic transmission is not a good idea. With standard runs for these cars, the box has almost certainly already been left and repaired. It is cheap to repair, but the resource until the next repair will be small even with careful maintenance.

Motors

The budget of the car had almost no effect on the quality of Getz engines. The G4E series motors were developed by Mitsubishi, and they have practically no generic problems. SOHC engines with 12-valve cylinder heads were installed mainly before restyling, 1.1-liter G4HG engines and 1.3-liter G4EH engines are rare and mostly on very old cars. After restyling, a 1.4 DOHC engine was added to the line of engines, which was a pair of a 1.6 liter engine (series 1.6 G4ED and 1.4 G4EE, respectively). These motors are very reliable.

The cast-iron block, timing belt drive, hydraulic lifters and a fairly massive piston group provide a good margin of safety for any style of operation. But the resource is not at all unlimited, and due to the design of the piston group, a small oil appetite is already present closer to a hundred thousand mileage. It greatly increases with overheating due to the death valve stem seals and leaks in the motor seals. In addition, the crankcase ventilation system is unpretentious, which is why the engine constantly “sweats”. Usually, after 200 thousand mileage, the engine comes to a state when it is better to sort it out due to oil consumption. And if you roll another 60-70 thousand, you will have to make a full-fledged "capital" with the installation of a repair piston and a complete restoration of the cylinder head.

The belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles or even earlier. In cold regions, on 16-valve engines closer to 150-180 thousand mileage, it is imperative to replace the chain connecting the camshafts and its dampers.

And yet, during operation, many minor troubles can arise, and the older the motor, the more trouble. Floating speed due to a dirty throttle and idle speed controller on old engines is a common thing, they need to be washed. Dirty intake is also not uncommon. With runs of more than a hundred thousand, you may encounter a knock in the timing due to failures of hydraulic lifters, which are not entirely successful here (for lovers of budget repairs, Ina compensators from VAZ get up here). To the credit of the motors, the problem is mainly associated with a rare oil change or its poor quality.

With runs of more than a hundred, one and a half thousand kilometers, failures of coils, high-voltage wires, sensors and wiring are regularly encountered. Good feedback about reliability usually relate to cars with runs up to 100, a maximum of 150 thousand kilometers. Further, the motor is still going, but it begins to demand more and more insistent attention. Apparently, the Korean manufacturer did not particularly count on a larger resource.

After about 150 thousand mileage, it is worth seriously diagnosing the catalyst. The chances that it will begin to "dust" are quite high, and the motor will not live long after that: the already soft enough piston rings will not endure this. By the way, the motor is also very sensitive to the quality of the air filter installation, and its design allows the installer to make mistakes.

Do not chase SOHC engines: in operation, they are not cheaper than 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines, and the resource of larger engines is generally slightly higher. The difference in the repair price is insignificant, as well as the difference in the price of the contract unit.

Summary

Tempted by the low price of parts, many conclude that the Hyundai Getz will be just as cheap to run overall. But no - if in maintenance it is cheaper than other foreign cars, then not much. The problem is that the reliability of the car was characteristic mainly for low mileage. Up to 150 thousand kilometers, the car almost does not ask for investments, but then small and not very problems begin. And if cars were lucky with engines, then with manual transmission and automatic transmission produced before 2008 - not so much. Yes, and the body in our climate rots noticeably, and if you do not take decisive measures, it does it quickly enough. As a result, everything comes out not so cheap, especially if you do not do minor work with your own hands, but rely only on services and bring any malfunction to a breakdown.

The Goetz has plenty of pros, but think hard before buying this car. And do not forget about a thorough diagnosis of the body.

Expert opinion

Hyundai Getz has a number of advantages that distinguish it from other subcompact cars: budget price, relatively cheap maintenance and the absence of serious sores. it great option for any driver who does not pursue large dimensions and at the same time does not impose increased requirements on the driving qualities of a car.

For some reason, the Hyundai Getz has long been entrenched in the reputation of a purely female car. Actually, it's just a stereotype. According to our practice, almost half of the owners who buy and sell these cars are men.

Finding a "Korean" in perfect condition is very difficult, since the car has not been produced since 2011 and has already managed to live a busy life. First of all, there may be problems with the body. The minimum that awaits you is chips, scratches and lapped. In this case, you are even lucky. Another common problem is the suspension, in particular the stabilizer struts. And this is not the fault of the car design itself, but of the owners, who in most cases delay the trip to the service station until the last. At the same time, all problems are easily and budgetary eliminated.

Despite the fact that Hyundai Getz is an "old man" in the market, the demand for it is consistently high. And both on the automatic and on the mechanics. Just yesterday, two buyers came to our branch in Rostov-on-Don at once, and both wanted to buy a 2010 Hyundai Getz on the mechanics.

Hatchback prices are highly dependent on the region of sale. If we consider restyled cars of the last year of production with the most popular 1.4 engine (97 hp), then the average price in Moscow and the region for cars with automatic transmission is 320 thousand rubles, with manual transmission - 300 thousand rubles. But the offers on the market of the Krasnodar Territory are much more expensive: with automatic transmission - 350 thousand rubles, with manual transmission - 320 thousand rubles.

Would you buy a Hyundai Getz?

In November 2005, Hyundai Getz was restyled. The shape of the headlights and taillights, grille and bumpers has changed. In addition, the car received a new steering wheel, dashboard design and center console. In the Russian market, Hyundai Getz is still available in both 3-door and 5-door body styles. The updated hatchback received upgraded engines with a working volume of 1.1 liters, 1.4 liters and 1.6 liters, which have become more powerful and more economical.

The Getz transmission can be manual or automatic (except for the base model with a 1.1 liter engine).

It should be noted that before the restyling, the three-door Getz for the Russian market was mainly positioned as a hatchback with sports inclinations - this was best satisfied by the expensive 1.6 GLS equipment with the most powerful engine in the range and excellent equipment. After restyling, against the backdrop of a general rise in price of the model, the positioning of the three-door changed - the car in the basic configuration and with a 1.1 liter engine began to be considered as an inexpensive starting model for those who plan to drive mainly in the city and would like to save on taxes and insurance. In addition to inveterate individualists, the car was in demand among young mothers who could transport children in the back seat with guaranteed safety. The extremely simple basic equipment of the “three-door” included a central lock with an immobilizer, a rear seat that folded in parts, and audio preparation.

Hyundai Getz with a 1.1-liter engine is the simplest and most low-power option that can be found on sale. The SOHC four-cylinder unit has a power of 67 horsepower, it was equipped with a manual transmission only and was able to accelerate the hatchback to a maximum speed of 154 km / h and in 15.6 seconds from standstill to 100 km / h. Of course, you should not expect agility when overtaking from this modification - it is best suited for unhurried and economical city driving, the consumption in this cycle is declared at 6.9 liters per 100 km. Outside the city, the hatchback consumes only 4.7 liters per "hundred". The average is 5.5 l / 100 km. More than enough power reserve provides fuel tank volume of 45 liters.

The Hyundai Getz suspension is structurally simple. Front independent (suspension strut type MacPherson strut) with stabilizer roll stability, rear semi-independent (torsion beam). The Getz 1.1 MT has ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The hatchback was fitted with 175/65R14 tires with a full-size spare. The three-door hatchback model does not differ in size from the five-door. Body length 3810 mm, width 1665 mm, height 1490 mm. The manufacturer claims 135 mm of ground clearance, but in the presence of crankcase protection, this figure decreases to 116 mm. Wheelbase - 2455 mm. The driver and front passenger do not feel cramped, besides, there is the highest height from the seat cushion to the ceiling - almost a meter. The rear is tighter, and it will be more convenient for two, but even here from the seat to the ceiling - 935 mm. To make it more comfortable to leave the “three-door”, the rear passenger can press a special pedal, and the front seat will move forward. The trunk has a standard volume of 254 liters, and with the rear seats folded down - 1130 liters.

Hyundai Getz is equipped with all modern systems security, which at that time were offered for a budget car of this class. The basic package includes a driver's airbag, seat belts with tensioners and load limiters. In EuroNCAP crash tests, the hatchback, equipped with additional side airbags, received four stars (out of five possible) for the safety of adult and child passengers, one star (out of four) for pedestrian safety.

Summing up, we can call Hyundai Getz one of the most interesting "urban" cars. It may not have such a bright appearance, but for some it is even a plus, especially against the background of some too eccentric "compacts" of European and Japanese manufacturers. The car is economical, structurally simple, comfortable. The body is almost one-volume, has short overhangs. Cons include the following: stiff suspension, low ground clearance, noisy interior, poor corrosion protection. The “three-door” has longer doors, which may not be very convenient in a tight parking lot, but, on the other hand, this type of body also has a lot of fans - it is tougher and looks good on the outside.
