How to remove a pulley from an electric motor of a washing machine. How to remove pulleys and couplings

A pulley is a wheel with a groove running along its rim. The wheel is attached to the shaft and plays an important role in the design of the engine, being responsible for transmitting torque from the shaft to the drive belt. An idea of how to remove a pulley from an electric motor is necessary when repairing or replacing a part with a new engine.

In this article you will find a description of existing methods for dismantling a pulley and a number of tips for their use.

How to remove a pulley from an electric motor: choosing the appropriate method

A universal technique, the use of which most often justifies itself, is a simple mechanical effect - light blows from opposite sides of the pulley, alternately. Thus, the pulley gradually moves from its seat on the shaft and can be removed.

In more complex cases, the list of necessary actions is planned based on the following factors:

  • method of attaching the pulley to the motor shaft (type of landing);
  • the condition of the surfaces at the junction (depending on the service life and the susceptibility of the materials to corrosion).

Under what conditions is it possible to remove a pulley from an electric motor without a puller?

There are a number of cases when, to effectively solve the question of how to remove a pulley from an electric motor, you cannot do without a puller. However, there is usually no need to use special devices if:

  • the pulley was installed without pressing, that is, the diameter of the shaft does not exceed the diameter of the pulley hole;
  • the mating surfaces were not subject to deformation during engine operation.

On low-power electric motors, reliable fixation of the pulleys is ensured by means of a splined fit, threaded connections or locking elements (rings, washers). To separate the pulley from the engine in such cases, it is enough to unscrew the nuts (or remove the rings). The situation is more complicated if a ring with jagged edges is used at the attachment point.

Before unscrewing the connecting elements, it is recommended to carefully secure the pulley using a vice. To avoid deformation of the pulley, wooden spacers are installed between the vise plates and the surface of the clamped part.

Heating method

If a thermal method was used to install the pulley, based on the expansion of materials, metals in particular, when heated, then a thermal effect on the pulley will be required for its dismantling:

  • due to the heating produced from the edges of the pulley, the diameter of the hole increases by fractions of a millimeter and, accordingly, the degree of pressing against the shaft decreases;
  • after this, it becomes possible to move the part from its seat by successively tapping it from different ends.

What you should pay attention to when using this technique:

  • one-time heating may not be enough, especially with a large pulley hole diameter;
  • the shaft must be reliably isolated from the temperature-increasing action that is applied to the pulley, since in the case of indirect heating of the shaft, the mating of the elements will only become stronger;
  • if this happens, you must wait until the elements have cooled completely and repeat the procedure.

Depending on what material the pulley and shaft are made of, another strategy may be chosen, in which, on the contrary, the shaft is cooled.

Using a puller to remove a pulley

Before removing the pulley from the electric motor shaft, you can install a special device - a puller, the device of which is simple. The design includes:

  • a metal plate with a hole in the center and narrow slits;
  • a nut welded to the plate;
  • bolts (the size of one, with a recess in the end, must correspond to the welded nut, the other two - smaller).

The disadvantage of this method is the need to slightly damage the integrity of the pulley, in the surface of which for attaching the puller:

  • 2 holes are drilled;
  • the thread is cut (to the size of the small bolts of the puller).

The puller operates as follows:

  • the plate is attached with two bolts to the pulley;
  • the third bolt begins to be screwed into the central nut, while its end rests against a metal ball, previously fixed in the centering groove of the shaft;
  • As it is screwed in, the bolt presses the puller plate away from the shaft, gradually removing the pulley from its seat.

There is a possibility that the bolt stroke will not be enough to dislodge the part. In this case, try placing additional nuts under the side bolts.

Thus, knowledge of basic dismantling methods and skills in working with simple tools will help you choose the optimal sequence of actions and quickly separate the pulley from the shaft.

You can often determine if a washing machine is broken by external signs or by the error code on the display. However, pulley failure is quite rare. How to identify it and eliminate it yourself?

We provide a step-by-step guide to repairing a pulley on a washing machine.

Let's figure out what a pulley is and what it is needed for. The part looks like a wheel made of steel or other materials. The element is attached to the drum shaft with a special bolt in the center.

There is also a SMA motor pulley.

The principle of their work is interaction. Using a drive belt, the motor pulley transmits rotation to the drum pulley. The latter rotates with the drum, allowing the washing process to begin. It is clear that if the parts are faulty, the washing machine will not be able to work.

The size of the pulley directly affects the number of revolutions of the drum. This is why different machine models with the same components have different performance characteristics.

Before we find out how to remove a pulley from a washing machine drum, let's figure out whether it really is the problem.

You are having problems with your washing machine if:

  • The drive belt constantly falls off, breaks, and quickly stretches.
  • After replacing the belt still continues to fall off.

Unscrupulous manufacturers use counterfeit parts when assembling a car. Therefore, a low-quality pulley may have sharp edges, which contribute to rapid chafing of the belt.

Unfortunately, there is no other way to diagnose a malfunction other than partial disassembly of the machine.

Unplug the washing machine and turn off the water supply. To remove the back panel, unscrew the inlet hose and drain the water from it.

  • Armed with a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the screws around the perimeter of the rear panel.
  • Remove it and set it aside.

  • Inspect the drive belt, which is located just behind the cover.
  • If nothing is noticeable at first glance, remove the belt. To do this, pull it towards you while turning the pulley.

  • Feel the belt with your hands, carefully inspect for wear.

Now inspect the pulley: loose fasteners are often the cause of the problem. The central fastening bolt becomes loose, which leads to unstable operation and the belt falls off. In this case, it is enough to tighten the bolt with a wrench and apply fastening glue or sealant.

The part could also crack due to physical wear and tear. In addition to problems with the belt, the user may notice noise and tapping while the SM is operating. The same signs are observed when the part is deformed.

Sequence of work

If you are convinced of the malfunction, proceed to replace the part. Some users are interested in how to fit a pulley onto a keyed shaft. This installation is carried out in a similar way, it’s just that the key allows you to additionally hold it on the shaft.

  • Place a wooden block as shown in the photo to limit its movement.

  • Using a wrench, try to unscrew the central bolt. Often it fits very tightly, so additional funds will be needed.

  • Heat the bolt with a blowtorch and additionally use WD-40. Wait for the lubricant to take effect.
  • Now use the wrench again and unscrew the bolt.

  • Pull the part towards you and remove it from the shaft.

Replacement is carried out in a similar manner. When installing, lubricate the bolt with sealant for reliability.

After installation, you need to inspect the washer motor pulley. Dismantling it is a little more difficult for a novice master.

First, remove the engine:

  • After marking the location of the wires, disconnect all wiring connectors.
  • Unscrew the fastening bolts.

  • While rocking the engine, pull it out of the car body.

Before removing the pulley from the washing machine motor, prepare a puller that can be used to remove bearings and a blowtorch (gas torch). Get started:

  1. Use a puller to grab the engine pulley.
  2. Turn on the soldering iron (burner) and heat the part, but not red hot.
  3. While heating, pull the part with a puller until it comes off.

Now the question is: how to secure the pulley to the electric motor shaft? Do the same:

  • Use pliers to clamp the new element and heat it with a burner.

  • Place it on the motor shaft.

If you don't know how to secure the pulley to the shaft, do the following:

  • Before it cools down, fix it on the shaft. To do this, use a metal rod and a hammer.
  • Apply blows with light movements so as not to deform the part.

After the element has cooled, it will tightly grip the motor shaft.

Now you need to reinstall the electric motor, secure the back panel and test the operation of the washing machine.

Now you know how to attach the pulley to the motor shaft. Visual repair on video:

Why are special technological holes made in pulleys? In auto repair shops, there is a special device for fixing the shaft, which must be bolted to the pulley and the shaft locked.

If there is no special device for fixing the shaft, which is screwed to the pulley, then you need to install good anti-roll devices under the wheels of the car and put 4th gear on the gearbox.

Or, the third option is to rest a pry bar against the flywheel teeth and fix the crankshaft from turning while unscrewing the pulley nut.

Another option is to insert a pin into the pulley hole, and install a pry bar around the pin and the second stop, as in this figure.

How to unscrew the crankshaft pulley

Depending on the design of the crankshaft, the pulley is attached to it either with a nut or a bolt. On rear-wheel drive vehicles, the pulley is usually secured with a nut.
The engines of some rear-wheel drive cars can be started with a special crank, for which special protrusions are made for engaging the crank. This handle is also called a “crooked wrench,” and the engagement for this wrench is called a ratchet.

The pulley fastening nut is installed with a size of 36 or 38 mm on a wrench. Use a socket wrench. The key is strengthened by welding a long handle or putting on a tube to increase the “shoulder”.

How to unscrew the pulley nut:

  1. Place the car on a pit or overpass.
  2. Apply the hand parking brake.
  3. Turn on 4th gear at the gearbox, put chocks under the wheels.
  4. Do not tap too hard on the edges of the nut.
  5. Throw on a socket wrench, extend it with a pipe and remove the stuck nut.

If the pulley nut does not come off:

  1. Move the gearbox handle to neutral.
  2. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs to prevent the engine from starting.
  3. Place a socket wrench on the nut and extend it with a pipe. Place the wrench in such a way that the pipe rests against the ground or the machine spar on the right side to prevent the pulley from turning clockwise.
  4. We make a couple of short sharp turns of the ignition key to turn on the starter. The starter will begin to rotate the flywheel, the flywheel will rotate the crankshaft, and the pulley will be secured with a key. In this case, the stuck nut usually “comes off” quickly.

The crankshaft pulley on front-wheel drive vehicles is generally secured with a bolt. To remove the crankshaft pulley of a front-wheel drive car, you must proceed in this order:

  1. Raise the front right side of the car with a jack. Place a trestle, stump or a pair of wheels with rims.
  2. Remove the wheel.
  3. Dismantle and remove the air filter with housing.
  4. Remove the protective cover.
  5. Loosen the belt tensioner and remove the alternator belt.
  6. To fix the crankshaft, you need to remove the plug in the clutch housing, then insert a pry bar into the hole and rest it between the flywheel teeth.
  7. Now you need to put on the socket wrench, extend it with a pipe and sharply try to turn it counterclockwise. The main thing is to remove the stuck pulley bolt.

If it is not possible to remove the bolt from its place, then we use the method of unscrewing it with a starter. This method is shown above.

Helpful advice from locksmiths who have seen a lot: use solvent or WD-40, or a similar rust preventative. After spraying it on the thread (if the pulley is secured with a nut), you need to wait 15 minutes, then try to unscrew it. If it’s a bolt, then it’s not easy to apply this product to the threads, although if you spray it around the bolt, it’s possible that liquid will pass through the micro-cracks and decarbonize the joint.

Pulley removal

Unscrewing a fastening bolt or nut is only half the battle. Next you need to pull the pulley out of the shaft. The pulley cannot be removed easily by hand unless its seat is broken. In addition, if the pulley fits tightly onto the shaft, it is also secured against turning by a key.

There are special pullers for removing the pulley from the shaft. There are mechanical and hydraulic pullers.

The design of a mechanical puller is simple. Usually it has three legs, with which you need to hook the pulley itself, and rest the central rod against the shaft. After which, you need to rotate the rod, the legs will straighten and pull the pulley towards you. There are even simpler pullers that you can make yourself.
If there is no removable device for the pulley, then you can use pry bars. If one person is filming, then take turns, moving it a little on each side so that there is no distortion. If there are two, then at the same time, from different sides, the pulley is pressed out from the crankshaft with a sharp movement.

It also happens that when using a puller, the walls of the pulley grooves cannot withstand and break off. Therefore, when using pry bars, they must be engaged as close to the shaft as possible.

Installing the pulley on the crankshaft

In order to reinstall the pulley on the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine, you need to check the seats. If there are burrs or burrs, remove them with an emery stone. If the old pulley easily fits onto the shaft, then such a pulley is not suitable. It should fit tightly and be pressed in with a certain amount of effort. Before installing the pulley, to reduce friction, it must be lubricated with oil or lithol.

The method of removing a pulley very often depends on the type of its fit and the type of mechanical interface. In most cases, it is enough to tap the diametrically opposite ends of the pulley with a hammer to get it out of its seat, but time and corrosion can play a cruel joke. In this case, you cannot do without appropriate techniques and devices.

Removing Mechanical Pulleys

Low-power engines often have a splined pulley fit without pressing. In these cases, the pulley is kept from moving by means of a retaining ring or washer, or a threaded connection. In these cases, it is enough to unscrew the fixing nuts and remove the locking ring. Reusable rings with jagged edges can also be used, which will either have to be cut down or take a long time to align at the installation site with an awl and a screwdriver.

Thermal pulley removal

Sometimes to remove the pulley it is enough to heat it slightly. As the temperature rises, the metal expands, causing the degree of compression to weaken. If the pulley was mounted on the shaft using the preheating method, then the indicated removal procedure simply cannot be avoided: the diameter of the shaft is a fraction of a millimeter larger than the hole in the pulley, which is why the degree of pressing is too high.

The pulley is heated from the edges, gradually tapping it from different sides towards the end of the shaft. In this situation, indirect heating of the shaft cannot be allowed, otherwise it will also be subject to linear expansion and clamp the pulley even more. If overheating occurs, the connection must be allowed to cool and then repeat the procedure again. If the seat width is significant, several heating attempts may be required.

Removing a pulley using a puller

Often the pulley can be removed using a simple puller. It is a thick metal plate with a hole in the center. A large nut is welded coaxially to the hole to one of the planes of the plate. On one line passing through the central hole, slits of small thickness are made in the plate. To use the puller, you will also need a bolt that matches the size of the nut welded to the puller and two smaller bolts with large washers.

It is necessary to drill two holes into the pulley, located on a line passing through its center. In these holes, a thread is cut with a single-pass tap, and the bolts for the puller are selected according to the diameter. The electric motor shafts have a centering groove in which it is necessary to secure the ball from the bearing of the required size using thick lubricant. The central bolt of the puller will also have to be processed: a spherical recess must be made in its end.

The puller is attached to the pulley with bolts passing through the slots and screwed into the threaded holes. The central bolt rests against a ball fixed in the centering groove of the shaft. During the screwing process, the bolt will unlock the puller from the shaft, due to which the pulley will be moved from its seat. If the bolt travel is not enough to completely displace the pulley, you need to place several large nuts under the side bolts.

Sometimes it happens that when working on a car there is a need to dismantle the crankshaft. And if an experienced car enthusiast can do this work within an hour, then for a beginner such an operation can be a real discovery and surprise. Below we will describe to you in detail how to carry out such work correctly and in the shortest possible time.

Reasons for dismantling the crankshaft

Dismantling the crankshaft on a VAZ-2114 may be required in the following cases:

  • The reason that comes first most often is replacing the timing belt and other work , which are somehow connected with the gas distribution mechanism. Work should be carried out in accordance with the regulations, or if the mechanism fails.
  • Another reason for dismantling is the crankshaft. They are changed when oil leaks occur in the places where they are installed.

Pulley fastening

On all VAZ-2114 vehicles without exception, the crankshaft pulley is fixed using a massive bolt, which can cause problems when removed.

A curved spanner wrench is good for fixing.

  • First of all, this is due to its location, since it is difficult to securely and securely fasten the key or socket head.
  • Secondly, even if you managed to position the key correctly, To dismantle it you will have to make every effort. This is due to the fact that at the factory it is tightened as tightly as possible in order to avoid the facts of self-unwinding. Also, the right-hand thread may not be the best for unscrewing it, which during operation only screws the pulley in tighter and causes the part to stick.

When performing work to remove it, it is best to keep WD-40 on hand.

Tool for getting the job done

To make the work easier, you need to prepare the following tool:

  • Jack.
  • Wheel chocks.
  • Pry bar and flat blade screwdrivers.
  • A set of keys.
  • Socket heads and extension.

It is best to carry out such work on a lift or inspection pit.
