Weaknesses of the Audi A4 engine. Bad reviews from owners about the Audi A4 B5

Didn't the new pancake turn out lumpy?

The main design achievement of the A4 (B8) is improved weight distribution along the axles, which has become almost ideal. The fact is that due to the location of the engine in front of the front axle, many Audi models suffered from an overloaded front end, which manifests itself in understeer. The creators of the A4 (B8) noticeably expanded the wheelbase (in comparison with its predecessor it increased by as much as 160 mm), moved the power unit back (it, together with the gearbox, is located almost behind the front axle), and moved the battery to the trunk. The result is almost perfect weight distribution. Thanks to this, the car is endowed with excellent stability and controllability and now has the right to be called a driver's car: driving it actively is a pleasure!

A different design concept is also emphasized by the design - the A4 (B8) is made in the new Audi corporate style, which was then adopted by all other models of this brand. The driver's character is indicated by the predatory front end with an aggressive bumper, the signature trapezoidal radiator grille and squinted front optics, delicately highlighted by the LED scroll of running lights.

4 years after its introduction, the B8 Quartet underwent restyling; the “makeup” of the exterior and interior was so light that only observant people or experts could notice the changes.

Story

2004-2008 The predecessor was produced - the third generation Audi A4 in the B7 body.

09.07 The next, fourth generation of the Audi A4 (B8) was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
03.08 Change of generations of Avant A4 station wagons.
03.09 The pseudo-off-road version of the station wagon debuts - A4 Allroad.

09.11 Restyling of the model.
04.14 Audi A4 (B8) is still in production.

Let's listen to the classics

The A4 is available in two versions: a 4-door sedan and a 5-door Avant station wagon. However, on the basis of the “four”, a pseudo-off-road version of the A4 allroad quattro was created, as well as new model A5 (coupe, convertible and liftback). Today we will look at the consumer qualities of classic A4s.

Station wagons are not uncommon in Ukraine; approximately a third of the cars on the secondary market- in a practical Avant body.

Traditionally, Audi “fours” are distinguished by high corrosion resistance; even in places where the paint is chipped, the metal almost does not rust. On high level And passive safety- maximum 5 stars according to the results of EuroNCAP crash tests 2009.

Taking into account modern trends, LED lights are widely used in this model (in running lights, rear optics, additional brake lights). However, in practice, this beauty can cause trouble, and restoring the status quo costs a pretty penny (see “Weak points”)!

Inside the Quartet, you immediately feel the premium quality of the brand, which is emphasized by high-quality and high-quality materials, wear-resistant cladding, precise fitting of parts, excellent sound insulation and rich (even in the basic version) equipment. In all this splendor, the driver’s notes of the model’s character are successfully integrated (see photo).

The driver's nature of the car is evidenced by the central part of the dashboard turned towards the driver, seats with developed support, and the vertical zero position of the tachometer and speedometer needles.

However, during operation it was still possible to identify several problem areas: over time, the shelf near the rear window(additional noise reduction is required) and the window regulators squeak (the guides need to be cleaned).

Friendly parity

A wide range of gasoline and turbodiesel power units was designed for the A4, and both types are represented in almost equal proportions.

As operating experience has shown, a number of problems have been identified in each of the gasoline engines. General - failure of individual ignition coils is possible, however, this problem occurs much less frequently than on its predecessor.

The most common gasoline engine is the 1.8 TFSI, and the rarest is the top-end 3.2 liter. The most popular diesel engine is the 2.0 TDI.

Everyone's weak point gasoline engines family TFSI - timing belt, premature stretching of the chain and breakage of its hydraulic tensioner were noted. This can happen with runs from 70 to 100 thousand km and threatens the chain slipping and a fatal meeting of the valves with the pistons. Therefore, during the specified mileage, in order to avoid troubles, it is necessary to monitor the condition of the specified parts.

Pump leaks also occur in the 1.8 liter engine high pressure(needs replacement). 2.0-liter gasoline engines have an increased oil “appetite.” If it is more than 0.5 liters per 1 thousand km, the service station first suggests replacing the crankcase ventilation system. If this does not help, the engine needs to be repaired and the piston group replaced.

The most reliable of diesel engines is the most popular 2.0 liter. In 3.0-liter models, the valves failed intake manifolds(most often noticed by the warning light Check engine) and the throttle valve block (the engine loses traction, interruptions occur, and smoke increases).

New priority

“Fours” come in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, although the latter are much less common in Ukraine. Compared to its predecessor, customization of the corporate all-wheel drive quattro has changed - in this generation of A4, priority is given to the rear wheels: in standard modes 40:60, while in its predecessor the torque distribution was equal (50:50). All-wheel drive versions are distinguished by better stability and cross-country ability than their single-wheel drive “brothers”. No characteristic weaknesses were identified in the quattro transmission.

The range of gearboxes designed for the A4 is also very diverse: there is a 6-speed manual (the least common), a Multitronic variator (for low-power front-wheel drive versions), a robotic manual transmission - S-tronic (analogue of the Volkswagen DSG) and a classic automatic - Tiptronic.

The most unreliable was the “robot” with two clutches - the weak point of the “mechatronics” control unit (manifested by jerking while moving). Sometimes the problem can be solved by reprogramming the “brains,” but often the problem unit has to be changed.

In a manual gearbox coupled with diesel engines, the dual-mass flywheel may fail (clicking and knocking noises when starting to move and idling).

But the most problem-free were Multitronic (it is of a new generation, and the weak point inherent in its predecessor has been eliminated) and Tiptronic.

Changeable character

Structurally, the car's suspension is similar to its predecessor - multi-links with stabilizers in front and rear lateral stability. To reduce unsprung weight, the front suspension arms (four on each side) and the rear lower wishbones are made of aluminum alloy. The chassis is characterized by moderate rigidity and energy consumption.

The trunk volume of the A4 is average compared to competitors - 480 liters versus 460 liters for the BMW 3 Series, 475 liters for Mercedes C-class and 565 liters for VW Passat (B6). Folding rear seats were an additional option until 2011, after that they were included in the “base”.

As an option, the A4 was equipped with the proprietary Audi drive select system, which allows you to change the character of the car (the settings of shock absorbers adjustable for hardness, responsiveness of the power steering and accelerator pedal vary) - versions before restyling had three operating modes: Comfort, Auto and Dynamic, and after 2011 - a fourth one was added - Efficient. Modes are changed using buttons near the gear lever. Adjustable shock absorbers turned out to be no less reliable than conventional ones.

The suspension is quite durable. Most of the original “consumables” of the front and rear suspensions are capable of operating up to 100 thousand km. A little less (about 80 thousand km) are the hydraulic silent blocks of the rear lower arms of the front suspension and about 60 thousand km - the stabilizer struts. At the same time, repairing the chassis is expensive - the front control arms are supplied with ball joints, and the rear suspension includes lower control arms along with rubber bands.

Difficulties also arise with replacement - over time, the steel bolts in the aluminum steering knuckles securing the upper arms and camber rods of the rear suspension become sour. They have to be heated, drilled and sometimes even cut with a grinder.

Rack and pinion steering, equipped with an electric booster, has proven itself to be reliable. Steering ends can withstand at least 100 thousand km, and traction rods - about 150 thousand km.

Electrified at A4 and parking brake- activated by a button near the gear lever, and the brake mechanisms block the pads using electric motors installed on each rear caliper. Unlike the Audi A6 in the 4F body and the VW Passat (B6), the Quartet has no problems with the electric handbrake. The only remark about the brakes is that over time the rear caliper brackets break and knock on uneven surfaces.

Weak points of the car

The weak point of all gasoline units of the TFSI family is premature stretching of the timing chain and wear of its hydraulic tensioner.

In S-tronic “robots” similar to VW DSG problems delivers the control unit - “mechatronics”.

The weak point of the A4 optics is the LED lights. Thus, in the front there was a failure of running lights (more often during the warranty period), in the rear there was a burnout of LEDs, and in Avant station wagons the circuit board oxidized over time and the LEDs burned out additional brake light. In all cases, the replacement headlights are assembled.

Like

I'm an Audi fan. I like the “Four” for its driving characteristics - the engine is torquey and allows you to drive actively. At the same time, in the city it is possible to consume about 10 liters per “hundred”, and outside the city at 140 km/h - about 7.5 liters. The suspension, together with high-profile tires, is comfortable and energy-intensive; it holds the car well both in corners and at high speeds. The equipment of the machine is rich, the quality of materials is high, the parts are carefully adjusted. Noise-and-insulation is good. The trunk is large.

I do not like

I don't like the low front bumper. The convenience of the middle rear passenger is hampered by a large floor tunnel. Too bad the rear seats don't fold down. Long items cannot be transported - the rear armrest does not have an access door to the cargo compartment. I only replaced the front shock absorbers and support cushions. But the reason is not their wear and tear, but the quality of the roads - in winter I fell into a hole. There were no other problems.

My rating is 5.0

Resume "AC"
The A4 is a prestigious car, which is backed up by the brand’s reputation, high quality assembly and materials, rich equipment and refined driving performance. You will have to pay a lot for all this. The main comments concern problems with the timing of TFSI engines and S-tronic “robots”.

Body

On Audi A 4 B 8, produced from 2008 to 2010, there is paint peeling on the front fenders along the edge of the arches.

The interior is very durable and even after 100 thousand km retains its presentation.

The rear parcel shelf and door trims may creak.

Dust and dirt accumulate in the headlights and get there through the ventilation tubes. It is worth inserting pieces of foam rubber into the tubes

The lenses of the fog lights become cloudy.

Electrics

The battery drains quickly. Fixed by software update.

The LED tail lights lose their seal, causing contact corrosion and light failure.

The folding mechanism for the exterior mirrors makes squeaks. The services lubricate the mechanisms, and since mid-2010 new sliding washers have been introduced.

On Audi A 4 B 8, produced from 2008 to 2009, the CCFL lamps in the MMI display backlight burn out.

After 100 thousand km the heater motor fails ($300).

In winter, the touch sensors of the Keyless system fail.

At 40-80 thousand km, the gas tank flap lock motor fails.

Engine

On 2.0 TDI engines produced in 2008-2009, the EGR cooler control valve wears out.

On 3.0 TFSI engines produced from October to November 2009, charge air leaks through a defective intercooler and, as a result, loss of power. Defective air coolers were replaced under warranty.

On 2.0 TFSI engines manufactured from March to May 2009, antifreeze leaks occur through the turbine coolant line. If you turn off the engine as soon as the engine overheating lamp comes on, you can avoid overheating.

A lot of dirt collects between the radiators of the air conditioner, engine and charge air, and the radiator honeycombs themselves quickly become clogged.

On cold engines, exhaust gases may leak through the exhaust manifold. After warming up, the manifold gasket functions properly.

Turbocharged engines consume up to 1-1.5 liters of oil per 1000 km to 20-60 t. km. The reason is the poor design of the pistons and rings. Dealers change the piston group after a control measurement of the oil at a consumption of more than 0.5-0.6 liters per 1000 km. The modernized piston group has been coming off the assembly line since May 2011.

Also, oil consumption increases due to sticking of the valve and oil separator in the crankcase ventilation system with a mileage of 20-50 thousand km. The part costs $130.

On 2.0 TFSI engines produced before 2011, timing chain skipping has occurred. As a result, crackling, clattering, rattling noises appeared when starting a cold engine, or the inability to start the engine. The problem is chain stretching, failure of the chain tensioner and phase shifter shut-off valve. Also, a timing chain jump can lead to subsequent bending of the valves ($6000). The problem is more common during urban operation over short distances.

Engine 2.0 TDI quite reliable. On long runs it gets clogged particulate filter and loss of traction occurs. This happens due to a failure of the sensors, starting the filter self-cleaning program. Which should start when contamination is more than 40%. The filter must be replaced. Some services remove it and reflash the ECU ($500).

The timing belt drive has a resource of 180 t. km, but in our conditions it is better to reduce it to 120 t. km. It will cost $500-1200.

On all engines, by 60-90 thousand km the pump may leak ($300-500). And by 40-60 thousand km the engine hydraulic mount will wear out ($300).

Transmission

Manual transmission6 and Tiptronic automatic transmission (on all-wheel drive versions with 3.0 TDI and 3.2 FSI) are reliable.

The Multitronic variator may fail already at 60-80 thousand km.

The dual-mass flywheel, release bearing and driven disc wear out quite quickly with diesel engines and manual transmissions. The clutch kit costs ($1300).

S-tronic is DSG for all-wheel drive with a longitudinal engine. Characterized by jerky operation after 40-60 thousand km. Dealers reflash the ECU, and upon re-application they replace the mechatronics ($1000) under warranty.

The all-wheel drive system has no complaints.

By 60-80 thousand km, the boots of the outer CV joints rupture ($70).

Chassis

In winter, the rear shock absorbers can knock on uneven surfaces, which often leak by 30 thousand km. Suspension arms last 100-120 thousand km, with the exception of the front lower arms with ball joints, which last 50-80 thousand km.

By 50-80 thousand km, the front wheel bearings will wear out ($100-200).

Control mechanisms

Brake hoses are cracking.

Sometimes the slats leak. After falling into a large hole, a knock may appear in the rack ($2000).

Other

The car is complex and expensive to maintain. Popular with car thieves.

With all this, the German manufacturer managed to introduce into the A4 all the best abilities and qualities of its main competitors.
The second generation of Audi A4 cars in the B6 body began to be produced in 2000 in the body of a four-door sedan, convertible and five-door station wagon. The model was produced until 2004, until it was replaced by third-generation cars on the assembly line.
Owners should not expect surprises from used Audi A4 cars in the B6 body, since they are not prone to rust, just like other models of this brand. If a car has been in an accident, even the damaged metal does not immediately develop rust.
To improve the anti-corrosion and noise insulation properties of the bottom, the German manufacturer covered it with special plastic shields, which, when used on our roads, tend to come off, most often in winter due to wet snow sticking between the plastic and the bottom.
Mechanics advise all owners to periodically check the cleanliness of the drain under the battery on the front panel. It tends to get clogged in the autumn, and moisture can damage the vacuum booster of the brake system, which is located there.
Plastic caps placed on the front optics tend to fade over time, so the headlights begin to shine poorly; this can be solved by polishing.
On older models, problems may arise with the windshield wipers; the cause is salt, which causes corrosion. If the wipers start to work slowly, these are the first signs of rust.
Among other things, on some car Audi A4s the lock cylinders on the doors may become sour; this usually happens with cars whose owners do not use a key, preferring the remote control.
The Audi A4 station wagon and sedan have the same dimensions, so the trunk of the first has a volume of 440 liters, and the second - 445 liters. In station wagons, you can increase the trunk to 1185 liters, and not all modifications of sedans allow you to fold the rear row seats.
In finishing the interior of the Audi A4, manufacturers used high-quality materials and fitted them well. Usually, all Audi “fours” offered in our secondary markets delight with rich performance. Even basic copies should in any case have front electric windows, central locking, climate control system, a set of six airbags, power steering, heated first-row seats and mirrors, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, ABS system.
A used Audi A4 may have problems with the airbags; this will be indicated by a warning light on the instrument panel. This happens due to a failure of the airbag connection contacts in the connectors located under the front row seats. This problem is solved by connecting directly or replacing the connectors with more reliable ones.
All seats are firm, although they provide good seating position.
Used Audi A4 cars in the B6 body at this age most often suffer from interior electrical failure. Mechanics partially explain this by our harsh winters, because the presence of salt and high humidity lead to oxidation of electrical wiring contacts. There were even cases where electronic problems contributed to blocking power unit, after that the car could no longer get to the service station under its own power.
For the “four”, the German manufacturer offered a wide range of engines, but in our country we most often find units with a power of 131 and 163 hp. volumes of 2.0 and 1.8 liters, respectively. The 1.8-liter turbocharged unit is demanding on the quality of the lubricant and the timing of its replacement, otherwise the oil intake on the pump becomes clogged and the so-called “oil starvation” occurs, leading to expensive major renovation. In this engine, the electric hydraulic tensioner of the phase adjustment mechanism is also not particularly durable; most often it wears out up to 150 thousand km. On older models, the gasket on the phase adjustment casing loses its seal, and replacing it is very difficult. The next disadvantage of the 1.8-liter turbocharged engine is the breakdown of the ignition coils.
A two-liter engine is characterized by increased oil consumption; on a car with a mileage of more than 100 thousand km, lubricant consumption can be half a liter per 1 thousand km. After 150 thousand km, the injection system actuator may fail; mechanics consider the first signs of this to be a deterioration in engine response.
Used Audi A4 with 1.6-liter engines may suffer from destruction of the pump impeller.
It is very rare in the secondary market to find versions with six-cylinder engines that are considered problem-free. They have only one drawback - the high cost of maintenance. Every 120 thousand km it is necessary to change all the rollers and belt; these operations are twice as expensive as compared to four-cylinder engines.
Experts call six-cylinder turbodiesel engines the most short-lived and unreliable; they may develop problems with compression after 150 thousand km, this is manifested by difficult starting “on hot”. These engines also often suffer from leaking gaskets on valve covers, oil pan, front crankshaft covers and fuel equipment malfunctions. Four-cylinder 1.9-liter units are more preferable to purchase; if you want to buy an economical version, then you should pay attention to them first. But still, you need to choose a used diesel Audi A4 according to technical condition at the time of inspection, and not according to the likelihood of problems occurring.

In domestic secondary markets, the most common versions of a used Audi A4 in a B6 body with a front-wheel drive transmission are considered to be the most common, but all-wheel drive examples are not so easy to find. If you are looking for an all-wheel drive passenger car, then experts advise taking a closer look at the Audi A4 Quattro, because today it is one of the best offers among similar cars in terms of the reliability of the all-wheel drive transmission. These cars received a Thorsen self-locking differential, which allows the torque to be evenly distributed between the rear and front wheels. Among other things, the electronics are also capable of imitating cross-axle differential locks using the ESP and ABS systems. Thus, the cross-country ability and stability of all-wheel drive modifications is significantly improved compared to single-wheel drive modifications.
The German manufacturer equipped the A4 cars in the B6 body with a Tiptronic automatic transmission, a Multitronic variator, a six-speed and a five-speed manual. The most reliable transmissions are considered to be mechanical gearboxes, which have a reliable hydraulic clutch. But if the previous owner was fond of active driving, then perhaps the expensive dual-mass flywheel was damaged; usually this breakdown is accompanied by a specific clanging sound when changing gears.
The continuously variable transmission allows you to instantly respond to pressing the gas, providing an economical driving style with equal fuel consumption for versions with mechanical boxes transmission But buying such modifications is risky, since on cars created before 2003, the adaptive variator control unit may fail, and other Multitronic malfunctions also occur. In addition, this transmission is also noisy; this is a feature of the unit and is not a sign of a malfunction.
Some used Audi A4s have automatic transmissions; they also have control units with which the driver can change his driving style. These modifications are found very rarely on the market, most often on all-wheel drive versions; craftsmen have no complaints about them in terms of reliability.
In mechanics, experts advise changing the oil every 100 thousand km, although manufacturers claim that it is filled for its entire service life. At approximately the same mileage it is necessary to change the oil rear gearbox on all-wheel drive versions. And versions with automatic and CVT transmissions need to be replaced every 60 thousand km. Only branded oil should be used.
The second-generation Audi A4 has an energy-intensive suspension. The creators made the transverse lower arms in the rear suspension and the arms of the front suspension from aluminum, reducing the weight of the unsprung masses. Thanks to the multi-link designs of the rear and front suspensions, the A4 has a driver's character and is highly stable.
But the maintainability of the suspension is not the strength of the Audi A4. Owners have to change the hinges of aluminum levers along with the levers themselves. But compared to the first generation A4 cars, the second generation has a more reliable suspension. Silent blocks of the rear suspension, ball joints of the lower arms and anti-roll bar struts can withstand 60-80 thousand km. Steering rod joints, front and rear shock absorbers can last 90 thousand km. The remaining suspension elements last a little longer.
Experts call steering rods and ends the weak point of the steering; their service life is 90-110 thousand km.
All modifications of the second-generation second-generation Audi A4 offered on the secondary market have braking system, represented by disc brakes and an effective ABS system.
In terms of content, the Audi A4 in the B6 body is equal to its class. Of course, owners always have the opportunity to save money, but nothing good will come of it. This model can be found in all major cities, but the prices for spare parts there are not cheap.
First of all, the used Audi A4 is valued for its prestige and few classmates managed to reach its level, so the A4 model has few rivals.
Prices for used second-generation Audi A4 cars are high, because anyone will like sharp brakes, informative steering, a well-tuned chassis, a decent level of comfort, rich equipment and high quality workmanship. However, when purchasing this car, you must be prepared for high maintenance costs, taking into account all the characteristic faults.
Today, on the secondary market, you can buy a used Audi A4 at a price from 13 thousand dollars to 18 thousand dollars, but if the car is in excellent condition, then its price can be higher.

Review and tips for buying a used Audi A4

In the nineties, Audi had not yet produced small cars, unless you count the very strange Audi A2, and the A4 series was the youngest in the family. But since the brand decided to firmly take its place in the premium segment, the cars looked very good in their class - at least when it came to numbers on paper. In reality, the cars also looked like quite worthy competitors for the third series of BMW, for the C-Class of Mercedes, although - frankly speaking - they were mainly competitors of the “new premium” represented by Lexus, Volvo, Saab, Cadillac and Infiniti.

Spacious interiors, good finishing, a wide selection of additional equipment and, of course, powerful engines and all-wheel drive. Plus, there is a tradition of using turbocharged engines, high quality workmanship and relatively inexpensive maintenance. In short, there is a lot to love about Audi.

History of the generation from 2001 to 2013

The Audi A4 series in the B6/8E body replaced the outdated first A4 in the B5 body on the assembly line in 2001. Technically, the B5 series was very progressive - its multi-link front and rear suspensions and engine series migrated to new body. The new series also received the main engines of the old one - 1.8 turbo, 1.6 and 1.9 turbodiesels.

In the photo: Audi A4 in the back of B5 and Audi A4 in B6/8E body

But the design of the new body, made by Peter Schreyer (who now works at Kia), has become completely different, and at the same time the car has become noticeably more spacious. In accordance with new trends, cheap configuration options were removed and almost all weak engines, except for the smallest 1.6. As an automatic transmission on new series For gasoline engines, they proposed a CVT jointly developed with LuK. Unfortunately, the main shortcomings of the first A4 migrated to new car. The complex multi-link suspension still did not impress with its service life, the electrical part and interior trim were also prone to creating problems at a far from advanced age - three-year-old cars could already “delight” their owners with all their might. The very popular variator also added problems - its rather crude (at that time) design created many problems for those who chose an automatic transmission. Over time, transmission problems were solved, but it became relatively problem-free only after the release of the next A4 in the 8C/B7 body in 2005.

After a major redesign of the electronics and a slight redesign of the exterior, the car was produced as the 8C/B7 generation until 2007. In fact, the next generation is only a deep restyling of the 8E, maintaining the general architecture of the body, suspension and range of engines. But the story does not end there; after the production of the Audi A4 B7 was curtailed, production was completely transferred to Spain to the SEAT plant, and there the car was produced in a somewhat simplified form as the SEAT Exeo until 2013.

Wealth of choice

The choice of car configurations is quite premium: seventeen engine options, full or front-wheel drive, automatic transmissions for almost any of them, a wide selection of equipment. In addition, in addition to the usual sedan and station wagon bodies for the A4, a convertible also appeared in the new series, replacing the long-outdated “convertible” Audi 80 series, produced until 2000.

Breakdowns and operational problems

Engines

The classic Audi layout with the engine in front of the front axle has the same disadvantages as on. Attempts to make the engine compartment as short as possible had a negative impact on the ease of maintenance of the engines. And many operations require complete removal of the front panel along with the bumper, headlights and radiators. Fortunately, on the A4 there are rarely V6 engines for which these operations are mandatory, and for in-line “fours” there are various “workarounds” for performing most routine maintenance. If you have a 2.4 or 3.0 engine, then the cost of maintenance will increase significantly simply due to the increased labor intensity of performing any work. Owners of V8 cars are unlikely to care about the cost of maintenance, but it must be said that this big engine is not much more difficult to maintain than a V6. Undoubtedly, the most successful engine for a car on the aftermarket is the 1.8T in all its many variants - AWT, APU, etc. These EA113 series motors have few weak points. The complexity of the twenty-valve cylinder head is compensated by good workmanship and a successful belt-chain drive of the camshaft (the camshafts are connected by a chain, which is often forgotten, and the camshafts themselves are driven by a belt). Piston group with a good margin of safety and is not prone to coking. There is a reserve for boosting, and there are a lot of spare parts for every taste.

The main thing with this engine is not to forget to change the timing belt every 60 thousand kilometers - it may not go through the scheduled 90. In addition, do not forget to check the condition of the chain and tensioner. It is important to monitor the turbine - KKK K03-005, K03-029/073 or even the K04-015/022/023 series are used here on more powerful and tuned versions for power up to 225 horsepower. On older engines, the main problems are control system failures, oil leaks, poor crankcase ventilation (CVV), rapid contamination throttle valve and “floating” speed. Non-turbocharged options with a volume of 1.6 and 2 liters and a power of 101 and 130 hp. Accordingly, they may appeal to those who are not used to rushing. And for those who would like to get the most reliable engine. These engines deservedly hold the lead in terms of low cost of maintenance, and the service life of the two-liter engine deserves praise; many copies, with a range of 300 thousand kilometers, do not even require replacement piston rings and liners. Just don’t confuse it with the newer 2.0FSI engine - it has direct injection and a slightly higher power of 150 hp. does not make it a competitor to a turbocharged engine. In terms of maintenance cost, this option is not much inferior to the turbocharged one, there is no complex supercharging system, but the injection system is extremely troublesome, and it also does not like frosts, in general, obviously not for Russia.

The 2.4 V6 engines are structurally similar to the 1.8T EA113 series, the same “generic features” are visible here in the form of a belt drive of camshafts, additional circuit in their drive, five valves per cylinder, etc. And the main problems are similar - some overcomplication, oil leaks, low timing belt life. However, problems that are not acute on the 1.8 inline four become critical on the V6, which fits tightly into the engine compartment. Particularly troublesome can be caused by unnoticed oil leaks from under the cylinder head covers, leading to fires in the engine compartment. Except that there are no specific problems with turbocharged engines with similar dynamics. There is no need to worry about the tightness of the intake, the radiator package is smaller, there are fewer “tubes”, and it is easier for a low-skilled mechanic to understand the engine. 3.0 V6 with 218 hp – completely different, this is a newer BBJ series motor. Among the advantages are perhaps a little more power and better traction at low revs. As for the rest, spare parts are more expensive, there are expensive phase shifters, oil leaks are worse, access to components is hardly better. It is slightly less noisy and more economical, but cars with it are not so much faster than the turbocharged 1.8, as they are more expensive. Here is the V8 engine of the ASG/AQJ/ANK series with 300/340 hp. for the S4 it is quite reliable, as far as possible for a passenger V8 on a sports modification of the model. Timing belt - also with a belt and chain at the same time. Specific problems include the same leaks, and much more oil leaks. Such aged cars “please” with frequent overheating and crumbling wiring harnesses under the hood. The 1.9 and 2.5TD engines are exactly the same here, but they are very rare and hardly deserve a separate story.

Transmissions

Let me make a reservation right away that there is no need to be afraid of all-wheel drive options. This means not only more traction in winter and better cross-country ability, but also high reliability. The all-wheel drive units themselves are very reliable, and in addition, the all-wheel drive versions are equipped with a classic hydromechanical transmission, and not a Multitronic CVT. All-wheel drive vehicles with 1.8-3.0 engines were equipped with a ZF 5HP24A gearbox, or 01L in the VW designation, which is very reliable. This five-speed automatic transmission is already familiar from cars from BMW and other manufacturers. causes early problems with oil contamination and valve body, but with timely maintenance this is not a problem. The main thing is to replace the gas turbine engine after a mileage of 200 thousand kilometers and change the oil every 60 thousand kilometers. Then the box can last up to three hundred thousand, by the time the oil pump cover is replaced, when other work will be required to restore functionality. The resource, which is slightly shorter than that of the classic “four-step”, is rewarded with an order of magnitude better dynamics – no worse than that of mechanics.

Front-wheel drive cars with engines 1.8, 2.0, 2.4 and 3.0 have Multitronic, already slightly touched upon above. At first, this transmission was presented as an ideal replacement for conventional automatic transmissions, with an extended dynamic range, simple and resourceful. In practice, at first it “pleased” with many failures and glitches and a small circuit resource. In addition, it turned out that the possibility of towing the car was not provided - the chain would lift up the drive cones. Over time, most of the problems were solved, and cars of later releases with all the recall companies passed are even very reliable. Except for one detail. The life of the chain remains about 80-100 thousand kilometers, sharp accelerations greatly reduce it, and towing causes damage to the cones and a strong howl of the box. And the cost of repairs decreases little. Despite the simplicity of the design, an average repair on it includes replacing the chain and cones - at a cost of one hundred thousand rubles. And only with very careful operation and a timely replacement of the belt, the box will cover its 250-300 thousand kilometers without serious intervention, without annoying failures and glitches. By the way, the car is very pleasant to drive with it.

Chassis

Audi's choice of multi-link aluminum suspensions in the mid-nineties as the basis for the entire range of cars made it possible to reduce the gap in handling and comfort from the rear-wheel drive “grands” represented by BMW and Mercedes. The same choice made Audi suspensions significantly more expensive to maintain compared to its competitors. Finding a car with a completely “live” suspension is difficult. The cost of a complete repair is too high, and usually the repair is done “situationally”, as the elements completely fail, while the service life of the suspension from repair to repair and each unit separately is reduced by several times, relative to a new one. The point here is not even that non-original materials are used. Just one half-worker. The suspensions are structurally similar to the suspensions of their “big brother” - the A6 in the C5 body, and the problems here are exactly the same, except that they are less pronounced, because the car itself is lighter. At the rear it is only the lower wishbone, but at the front both ball and all four levers are consumables. If you do repairs on time, then the costs will be moderate, but you need to buy spare parts for 25-35 thousand rubles at least once and do absolutely everything, then there is a chance that the suspension life before the first major replacements will be 100-150 thousand kilometers.

Electronics

All kinds of service electronics “please” with numerous problems, usually minor and easily fixable by an electrician and fitter, but sometimes not cheap. The most unpleasant problems are with the comfort unit, for example, refusal to open the doors, and it’s good if the car’s lock cylinders work. The wiring to the doors and trunk is often damaged, especially if the car is operated in cold regions. In addition, pixels quickly burn out on numerous displays. The air conditioning compressor also often fails - it is quite tricky, constant rotation, with a built-in clutch. Unfortunately, the price for such an advanced unit is also steep.

Audi A4 has gained great popularity among car enthusiasts because this car is equally well suited for both family car enthusiasts and single drivers, for example, for daily trips to work. One way or another, the car is prestigious, well-equipped, but, alas, not cheap, either in the initial purchase or in further operation. Now let’s try to figure out how often investments in a used Audi A4 will be required.

A little history:

The A4 model replaced the morally and technologically outdated Audi 80 in 1994. In order to maintain contact with the eighty, the company’s management decided to preserve the generational calculus that began back in 1960. So production of the Audi 80 was discontinued in the fourth generation, and the first generation A4 received the classification " B5 " The generation that will be discussed today is listed as “ B7 "(third generation), and was produced from 2004 to 2007, representing a deeply modernized predecessor. The car's design and suspension have undergone changes, and four new engines have also appeared. The front part of the body has completely changed, a single radiator grille has appeared in the form of a trapezoid, the headlights have become slightly curved towards the bottom. Changes also affected the trunk lid, rear lights, rear bumper and chassis; The interior of the car began to be covered with expensive fabric, velor or leather.

Disadvantages of a used Audi A4.

Audi A4 Available with both petrol and diesel engines. Most often, on the secondary market, there are cars with a two-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine, or with 1.8 and 2.0 liter turbocharged engines. All engines are equipped with a timing belt type and a hydraulic valve pusher, which do not require adjustment. Two liter naturally aspirated engine it is quite reliable, and up to 150,000 km does not require special attention, and after the specified mileage, the engine begins to gradually eat up oil (up to 300 grams per 1000 km). Of the turbocharged engines, the most reliable is the 1.8-liter unit, but it is very demanding on quality lubricants. Subject to proper operation, the turbine will last 200 - 250 thousand km.

But a two-liter engine can present unpleasant surprises, for example, after 100,000 km, carbon deposits and wear form on the injection pump pusher and camshaft. Closer to 150,000 km, oil begins to flow through the valve cover (to fix this problem you will have to pay about 250 USD). Typically, the cause of this phenomenon is a faulty crankcase ventilation valve, and in such cases oil can press not only from under the gasket, but also get into the spark plug wells. After 100,000, the ignition coils fail one by one (the cost of one is about $50). With a mileage of over 150,000 km, in 99% of cars the engine consumes oil, and, unlike an atmospheric engine, the consumption here reaches one liter per 1000 km. Sometimes decoking of the rings helps eliminate this drawback. The turbine, like the 1.8 engine, lasts 200 - 250 thousand km, but with a mileage of more than 150,000, it begins to take more oil.

A two-liter turbodiesel will most likely please you very much with its reliability and lack of investment in repairs up to 200,000 km, provided that the previous owner serviced the car on time and refueled with high-quality fuel. After 200 thousand km, the injectors will need to be replaced, and it is worth noting that their cost is quite high. The thermostat, by the standards of modern cars, lasts quite a long time and requires replacement every 120 - 150 thousand km. At the same mileage, the cooling system pump will need to be replaced, but fuel pump lives longer - about 200,000 km.

Transmission.

On the Audi A4 (B7) you can find five- and six-speed manual transmissions, a CVT Multitronic» (Multitronic) and a six-speed automatic " Tiptronic» – only on all-wheel drive versions. A manual transmission, in general, is not fatal, but some owners of cars with mileage of more than 100,000 km complain of unclear gear shifts. The clutch, during normal operation, lasts up to 150,000 km, closer to 200,000, the synchronizers will have to be replaced. Multitronic, up to 150,000 does not cause any complaints, and after that it may begin to enter emergency mode, but do not be too alarmed, as this is most likely due to failures in the electronic control unit. The Audi A4 is equipped with an automatic transmission from a well-known manufacturer " ZF" If, during acceleration, you feel slight jolts, then most likely the problem is in the torque converters. Buying a new torque converter is not a cheap pleasure (about 800 USD); at the service center you may be offered to repair the old one, but this is not worth doing, since the repaired part does not last long. The recommendation for extending the life of transmissions is simple - change it a few times every 40 - 60 thousand km.

Electrical equipment.

Over time, the air flow control in the cabin, as well as the recirculation system, begins to malfunction; In such a situation, the cause is usually wear and tear on the servos. If your air conditioner stops working, first check the presence of refrigerant and the tightness of the system, then check the functionality of the air conditioner control sensor. If the airbag indicator does not go off during the cold season, then the cause of this malfunction may be a stuck airbag sensor (try driving into a heated parking lot, and most likely the problem will solve itself).

Driving performance of a used Audi A4.

The front suspension of the Audi A4 (B7) is four-link, the rear suspension is on trapezoidal arms. Many people believe that the Audi suspension is not quite suitable for our roads, but this is not true. During normal operation, the suspension will have to be repaired once every 100,000 km, but, in fairness, it is worth saying that you need to invest a lot in this unit. For example, replacing rattling levers all around will cost 800 - 900 USD, four shock absorbers (non-original) 300 – 400 USD Owners usually have no complaints about the braking system; the pads are of good quality and can last up to 60,000 km. Closer to 200,000 km, the steering rack will need to be repaired, which will cost 200 – 250 USD

All-wheel drive transmission in the version " quattro"is quite reliable, and all you need to do with it is to make sure that the seals do not start leaking, and if a leak forms, it must be quickly eliminated. With a mileage of 150,000 km or more, play appears in many cars in the cardan support bearing, and in order to avoid more serious problems, it must be eliminated in time by replacing the bearing.

Result:

When buying a used Audi A4, you must understand that the key to your long life together with this car, first of all, depends on regular visits to a car service center. Be sure to change the engine oil every 15,000 and no less frequently, and the timing belt every 50,000 km. These cars love fuel. High Quality, and we, unfortunately, cannot always offer them this. Due to the fact that with the onset of cold weather many sensors begin to fail, owners often call the Audi A4 “sissies.”

Advantages:

  • Design
  • Build quality.
  • Quality of body metal and paintwork.
  • Balanced suspension.
  • Interior finishing materials.
  • Audio system sound.

Flaws:

  • High cost of service.
  • Fuel consumption of gasoline engines (12 liters per hundred)
  • Increased oil consumption after 100,000 km.
  • Electronics are afraid of frost
  • Low ground clearance.
