Bicycle in a box - dimensions, delivery, assembly. Assembling a new bike from a box and maintenance after purchase How to assemble a bike from a b twin box

1. Necessary tools

2. First steps

3. Installation of pedals

5. Steering wheel

6. Saddle

By buying a new children's bicycle in a box, you become the happy owner of an excellent developmental item not only for the child, but also for yourself. It's time to plunge into childhood and remember the skills of assembling a construction set.

1. Necessary tools

As with a construction set, a set of tools is required to properly assemble a mechanism. In this case they will be real.

On bicycles from different manufacturers, bolt heads and nut sizes may differ. But the tools below are enough to assemble most children's bicycles.

1. Wrenches 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 mm.

2. Adjustable wrench up to 32 mm inclusive.

3. Phillips screwdriver.

4. Hexagons 4, 5, 6 mm.

6. Side cutters or strong scissors

2. First steps

We take the bike out of the box, remove all the “husks” from the bike, which are generously wrapped around the bike so that the paintwork is not damaged during transportation.

1. If tape is used for fastening, it is better to tear it hands so that during the removal of cardboard and polyethylene the paintwork is not damaged.

2. If nylon clamps are used for fastening, cut them with either side cutters or scissors

We open all the bags or boxes that contain bicycle parts and accessories. When the bike is freed from its packaging, we have the following picture:

We thread the chain guard through the connecting rod, place it in places specially designated for it, and attach it with screws

If the holes on the bike stands do not line up with the holes on the guard, use a hammer to rotate the bracket

3. Installation of pedals

To ensure that the pedals can be unscrewed after a few years, lubricate the threads with thick lubricant.

If the connecting rods are aluminum, use a special paste that resists sticking of surfaces

The pedals differ from each other: R - pedal with right-hand thread, L - pedal with left-hand thread

Standing on the right side of the bike, pedal to the right

Standing on the left side of the bike, pedal to the left

4. Wheels (main and additional)

Using wrenches 12 and 13, attach the side wheels to the brackets

Unscrew the nuts by 15, place the guides, and the brackets with wheels on them, then press them with the nuts. Adjust the height of the side wheels so that they are slightly higher than the rear wheel, then tighten the nuts

In our case, the rear fender, trunk, and also the included flag are also attached to the wheel axle, because there are no special holes on the frame for attaching the fender and trunk arms.

Using a 14 or 15 wrench, screw the front wheel, having previously installed the guides in the special holes in the fork (they serve to ensure that if the nuts are possibly loosened while driving, the wheel remains in place)

Thanks to these steps, the bike can stand without additional assistance, which will make further assembly easier and more convenient.

5. Steering wheel

If you have a bracket on which the reflector or basket is attached, unscrew the large nut (maybe 28, 32 mm), install the bracket and screw the nut back

1. Take the steering wheel, loosen the nuts by 13.

2. Turn the steering wheel so that it is at an angle of approximately 70-80 degrees to the stem.

3. Tighten the nut to 13 so that the handlebar in the stem does not turn.

4. Insert the steering wheel into the fork stem to the required height, then tighten the bolt with a 13 mm wrench

Attention. The steering wheel cannot be raised above a certain height. This is signaled by special risks applied to the steering stem. When the steering wheel is installed at a certain height, they should not be visible. If you see them, then the stem needs to be recessed into the fork stem until they disappear. The same goes for the seatpost

6. Saddle

The saddle can either be installed on the seatpost or lie separately from it.

1. In the first case, simply loosen the nuts by 13 or 14, turn the saddle to the desired angle and secure them so that it does not turn left/right or up/down.

2. In the second case, loosen the saddle nuts, put it on the seatpost, rotate the saddle to the desired angle and tighten the nuts.

The angle should be chosen so that when the seatpost is installed in the frame, the saddle is parallel to the ground.

7. Fenders, trunk, accessories

The rear fender is usually already on the bike, but you not only need to bolt it on, but also check the manufacturer's tightening of the bolts and nuts. Very often they are loosely tightened, which can cause them to unwind while riding.

There are special threaded holes for the rear fender on the bike. Just screw the antennae to these holes with screws

At the front wing you need to attach the lower part, as in the photo above, then the upper part

If the front or rear wing is crooked, you can adjust it with screws that press the plate holding the “whiskers”. If this doesn't help, just bend one side of the "mustache" closer to the wheel

The trunk is attached with screws to special holes on the frame. The screws screwed into the frame near the seat tube are intended to secure the upper part of the rack.

Install reflectors. For the front reflector, there is either a bracket or a clamp attached to the steering wheel. The rear one is usually attached to the trunk with 8 nuts.

Use a screwdriver to screw the bell

Then install soft covers that will protect your child in the event of an impact on the steering wheel.

The assembly will be completed by installing a basket for small items using the included clamps.

Your child will be happy with the result of your work

Let's start with the fact that if you have the opportunity, never assemble bicycles yourself. Regardless of whether the bike is for adults or children, assembling it is quite a difficult task. This is the lot of craftsmen who have “eaten” more than one dog on this and know all the intricacies of assembly. During assembly, “extraordinary situations” often occur - the bike does not adjust, the wheel is not attached correctly, the bolts do not fit, etc.

For a specialist who does this every day for 8-10 hours, this will cause a delay of 5-10 minutes; he will quickly find a replacement for the missing part and fix the problem. And for you this can turn into a real “nightmare”. So think about it, is it worth it?

So, back to the bike in a box. The bike is in a box in a partially disassembled condition. This is mainly done to reduce the cost of transporting the bike and also to protect the bike from external influences. The front wheel, handlebars, saddle and pedals have been removed from the bicycle. All additional parts - wings, mirrors, horns, reflectors, plugs will have to be installed yourself.

For assembly you will need a good 15 mm open-end wrench (or a specialized pedal wrench), a 5 mm hex key and most likely 4, 6, 8 mm hex keys, as well as 10 and 6 inch wrenches, a Phillips screwdriver, a medium-sized screwdriver, pliers .

UNPACKING

  • 1. Take the bike and all parts out of the box, then lay out any unassembled parts.
  • 2. Remove all cardboard from the bike and packaging from the frame.
  • 3. Remove the plastic protective packaging from the axles. Get rid of all that unnecessary packaging. They are needed only for transportation.
  • 4. Write down the frame serial number on the warranty card (usually under the carriage)

ASSEMBLY

Threaded connections

The material of most MTB threaded connections is aluminum, and the bolts in most cases are steel. Therefore, you need to tighten it without using excessive force so that the thread does not break. It doesn’t spin - you don’t need to take a larger lever, but it’s worth checking whether the threads in the assembly are clean, whether there are any chips, whether the thread is generally suitable for this screw / bolt in the place where you intend to screw it. The thread pitch varies. It is better to clean the threads (for example, with a needle or sharp awl).

Wheels

  • Determine the direction of rotation of the front wheel (for example, the arrow on a tire with directional tread). If there are no markings, you can put it anyway.
  • Install the front wheel into the fork so that the axle fits neatly into its grooves.
  • Install the eccentric into the axis of the front wheel hub so that the eccentric tab is on the left in the direction the bicycle is moving, and the springs are on both sides of the hub with their narrow edges towards the center.
  • Place the eccentric tab parallel to the wheel axis and tighten the plastic nut with your fingers, then tighten the eccentric tab. The wheel should be securely fixed, but you should not tighten it with all your might.

Brakes

  • It is highly recommended to lubricate brake cables before inserting them into the jackets.
  • If your bike has rim brakes, lock them up.
  • In the case of a highly asymmetrical arrangement of the brake levers, check that the wheel is correctly installed in the fork grooves and, if necessary, rotate the wheel 180 degrees by moving the eccentric.

Shifters

It is also recommended to lubricate the shifter cables before inserting them into the shirts. Also pay special attention to the smooth routing of the shirts for better shift quality. When screwing shifters onto the handlebars, do not tighten them all the way. Screw them in so that they rotate slightly under load, but do not rotate when you press the shifter/brake handle. This is so that if you fall, the handle will not break due to impact. In this case, it will only rotate slightly around the steering wheel.

Steering column(most often already installed on the bike)

Apply grease to the seating surface of the steering tube. You need to press in the cups very carefully, and you need to make sure that the cups are installed correctly (do not confuse the top and bottom), and also make sure that the cups are pressed in without distortion. If you press it inaccurately, you can ruin the end of the steering tube, which will have to be trimmed in the workshop. Before pressing the steering column cups, you can put them in the freezer - they will fit easier.

Stem and handlebar

Place the handlebars symmetrically in the stem, and evenly tighten 2 or 4 bolts with a 5 mm (4.6 mm) hex wrench so that the brake levers point down at an angle of 30-45 degrees from the horizontal. After adjusting the steering wheel, secure it well to avoid possible injuries in the future. In addition to securing the steering wheel, it is necessary to correctly distribute all the cables so that they are not pinched or chafed anywhere.

Horns

  • If your bike is equipped with horns, rotate the horns to an angle of about 20-30 degrees upward from horizontal, then tighten the bolts with a 5mm hex key. Saddle
  • Install the saddle into the frame and clamp it to the desired height with the cam.

Pedals

  • Each pedal is twisted against the direction of movement of the bicycle. Accordingly, each pedal - right and left - has a different thread, that is, the left and right pedals are different! Find the pedal with the letter "L" on the end of the axle. This is a left-hand pedal with left-hand threads, meaning it screws into the crank arm counterclockwise. The right pedal (“R”) has a right-hand thread.
  • Tighten the pedals properly using a 15mm open-end wrench (6mm or 8mm hex). It is very important to tighten the pedals tightly - they tend to unwind.

Let's assume you bought a bicycle, but disassembled. And on the floor in front of you lies a box filled with all kinds of parts and spare parts. All that remains is to assemble the unit and, without wasting time, go for a ride in the nearest park.

No problem! Now we will tell you how to save on the services of a bicycle mechanic and handle the assembly yourself!

To assemble the bike you will need the following tools: cable cutters, bike stand, set of hex keys, screwdriver, 15mm pedal wrench.

Step #1
We release the bike from its original packaging.

Step #2
To cut rope clamps, it is recommended to use cable cutters. The small box contains all the small elements (eccentric, reflectors and pedals), as well as a passport for the bicycle.

Step #3
We start assembling the bike from the front. Carefully unscrew the stem cover. We install the steering wheel exactly in the middle (according to the risks). We tighten the bolts one by one, cross to cross.

Step #4
Now you need to install the front wheel. We insert the eccentric (clamp) so that the tab is on the left, and the springs are on both sides of the bushing.

Step #5
Tighten the eccentric with medium force. Then we extend the steering column. We check that it does not dangle, but at the same time spins freely.

Step #7
The next step is to install the brake caliper (braking machine). First, install the adapter on the left leg of the fork (if necessary).

Step #8
Next we install the caliper itself. It is important to center it relative to the brake disc. Next, we screw the hydraulic line to the fork to prevent it from getting into the wheel.

Step #11
We fasten the pedals. After this, you need to configure the speed switches. We install the chain on the smallest sprocket at the front and the largest at the rear. By rotating the screw L (Low), we set the position of the frame so that the chain is as close as possible to the inner plate and at the same time, when rotating the pedals, does not touch the frame. Then we move the chain to the largest front and smallest rear sprocket. By rotating the H (High) screw, we set the position of the frame so that the chain is as close as possible to the outer plate and at the same time does not touch the frame.

Step #12
Adjust the height switch. The switch foot should be at a height of 2-3 mm from the chain. Next, remove the tip sticker and the switch tabs. The chain should move from one sprocket to another smoothly and quickly, and at the same time should not touch the derailleur frame. The cable tension is adjusted on the shifter (a device for changing gears on the steering wheel).

Many people now buy bikes online and receive them in boxes. Here we explain what tools you'll need to assemble your bike, how to assemble it, and how to check its safety. If you are unsure about anything we offer, go to your nearest bike shop. They will be more than happy to help you.

Required Tools

  • Road pump
  • Pedal wrench
  • Hexagon set
  • Wrench (optional, but recommended)
  • Can of lubricant
  • Stand/tripod (preferably, helps a lot)
  • Wire cutters (Cut brake cables, derailleur cables and crimp ends if you need to install gears and brakes).

General Concepts You Need to Know

When installing carbon components, such as handlebars and seatposts, it is always recommended to use a special adhesive for carbon products. Usually small tubes in cardboard boxes are included, but if not, you can buy it from your local bike shop.

Do not overtighten the bolts! Follow the recommendations, which are usually written in small letters near the bolts. The seatpost is usually tightened to 6Nm. It is important. Over-tightening can ruin the components, and under-tightening can cause them to move. (No one wants the steering wheel to shake when going down a steep hill!!)

Threads must be lubricated. This applies to both bolts and pedals. Most new bikes have the bolts pre-lubricated. Without lubrication they will get stuck.

Teflon spray is ideal for lubricating cables.

If you are building a children's bike, they are much simpler and you won't have to spend as much time fiddling with gear shifting and the headset.

1. Empty the box

Most bicycles come in a large package, with handlebars attached to the wheels. The first thing to do is unpack everything from the pile of plastic, ropes and cables. The easiest way is to put the bicycle frame on a tripod and cut off all the windings. If you don't have a tripod, lean the bike against the wall.

And remember, the bike may be the wrong size or defective, and you may have to return it. Therefore, it is best to unpack it carefully and have a rough idea of how it was packed. Because If you need to return it, you can put it in the same box.

2. Insert wheels

When unpacking is complete, insert the wheels. Insert the axle into the wheel, first apply a thin layer of grease along the entire length of the axle shaft (they may already be lubricated from the factory). Check the rotation of the wheel (the direction of rotation is marked with an arrow on the side of the tire). The quick release lever should be on the left side of the bike when you sit on it.

When installing the front wheel, simply insert the axle into the fork slots, leaving the cam lever on the left side. Make sure the wheel is positioned exactly halfway between the forks. You may need to loosen the cam to widen the brake calipers to make room for the wheel to move. On inexpensive bikes there may be no cam, but then you can loosen the tire by letting the air out of it.

It is not uncommon for wheels to be delivered slightly bent due to improper transportation. Therefore, you should check that everything is okay with them. To do this, lift the bike and spin the wheel. Watch how it rotates relative to the frame - the bent wheel is immediately visible. If you need to adjust your tire, you can contact your nearest bike shop.

You also need to pump up the tire! A road pump with a pressure gauge is best suited for this. Most often, tires indicate the pressure to which they need to be inflated.

3. Turn the steering wheel in a circle

To do this, you will most likely need hex keys, the size of which will depend on your bike. Typically, a bicycle uses 4 or 2 sizes of hex bolts, in some cases Torx bolts. If you don't have the appropriate wrench on hand, you can use a hex size smaller. If the bolts are not lubricated, it is recommended to lubricate them to prevent them from failing in the near future.

Loosen the stem bolts and turn the handlebar to the desired position. Then tighten the bolts and make sure everything is tight enough. If you overtighten one of them, the stem may break. When using a wrench, 5-6 Nm will be enough for each bolt.

4. Place a seat

The seatpost may already be in the frame, but fixed at its lower position so that the bike fits into the box. Therefore, you will need to set it to the height you need, according to your height and your stance.

5. Install brakes and gears

For safety reasons, as well as for fun, we recommend that you check that the brakes and sprockets are installed correctly and that the headset fits snugly. Some bikes come without cables. They are quite easy to install yourself, but you should be careful. If you need to cut cables, be sure to use the right tools, wire cutters. Do not rush to use scissors, because... they bevel the edges of the cable.

Note: The cables lie in the grooves and it is completely normal for them to stretch slightly after a couple of weeks. This may affect the speed of the brakes and transmission system. This is normal and only requires a slight adjustment by you or your local mechanic.

6. Check the switches

Increased attention should be paid to setting the speed switches. They should be installed on the steering wheel in such a way that you can use them comfortably, so that you do not have to reach for them with your fingers. Shift cables should be installed in such a way as to ensure maximum freedom of movement of the steering wheel and at the same time not dangle in different directions.

Of course, all of this is just basic advice, but even if you listen to at least them, you will be able to assemble your new iron friend yourself. However, even if you are afraid to do this yourself due to insufficient experience or for some other reasons, you can always take the help of a specialist from the nearest bicycle workshop.
