    As already mentioned, the PEUGEOT 407 with a V6 engine and a Japanese Aisin automatic transmission is equipped with shock absorbers with variable stiffness. There are nine fixed modes of valve operation, and mode changes occur automatically, individually for each of the four shock absorbers. In this case, the computer receives the same data as the ESP control unit, as well as readings from the vertical movement sensors of each wheel. As a result, the roll of the car is significantly reduced and the sway of the car is reduced, and the smoothness of its movement improves.

    Constant suspension problems

    Previously, Peugeot sedans were famous for their particular reliability. But those days are long gone, and the 407, introduced in 2004, is the complete opposite of this opinion.

    By transporting used Peugeot 504 and 505 to Africa, many students earned their way to university. In the 80s it was extremely profitable business, since these French cars were in great demand on the Dark Continent - their suspension was considered indestructible. But the 407 would probably have pleased the Africans much less. Because the suspension is clearly its Achilles heel: equally complex rear and front axle are subject to wear and tear even on relatively good Central European roads faster than any warranty on a used car expires. Hinges independent suspension, supports, silent blocks, steering and connecting rods are the main culprits of breakdowns that owners are forced to fix every 40,000-60,000 km. A small consolation in this case: the rear stabilizer links can be purchased over the counter in a reinforced version from Meyle. We recommend paying attention to independent auto parts dealers when looking for engine parts: the often-needed turbochargers for the 1.6 HDi can be purchased for €300 cheaper than from Peugeot. Our advice: when installing them, it is worth replacing the oil supply system, malfunctions of which in most cases lead to breakdown of compressors. Otherwise diesel engines are considered reliable unless the owner skips replacing the timing belt. All HDi turbodiesels are equipped with a dust filter from the very beginning of production. Unfortunately, it is prone to clogging, especially if the car is often used for short trips. Gasoline engines - with the exception of the 3.0 V6 - are less vulnerable. Automatic transmissions are prone to problems, while manual transmissions are, of course, stronger. The gearbox linkage joints often wear out, which can be felt when handling the gearshift lever. And since we are talking about levers: the turn signal lever often does not turn on - or does not turn off. The list of other minor dirty tricks includes capricious power windows, a ventilation system that cools and warms according to the mood. On the 407 SW station wagon, the protective curtain of the large glass panoramic roof goes on strike from time to time. At least in Europe. In hot Africa - unlikely.

    TEST DRIVE

    OUR TEST CAR, Peugeot 407 SW HDi 110 for $10,500, can be described as follows: it is six years old, it has covered a little more than 112,000 km, and it looks quite decent in appearance. Thanks to the large panoramic roof, climate control and a couple of electronic assistant systems, it is also quite well equipped. However, under its outer shell in a fashionable black metallic color, a technically unpleasant surprise awaits the new owner.

    OUR TEST RIDE turned into a disaster. Although the small 1.6-litre HDi thanks to its short gear ratio nimbly propels the heavy 407 forward from a standstill, it immediately becomes obvious that the suspension is squeezed like a lemon. The worn-out independent suspension joints rumble in front, and the station wagon swings freely at the back, as rear axle strongly pulls to the side on every wave of the road surface. It looks like replacing one bushing won't be enough here. Also unnerving are the shortcomings of the assembly, such as the constant noise accompaniment in the form of rattling of the trim and crackling from the depths of the driver's door. In addition, the turn signal lever does not work as expected - another typical “illness” of the 407.

    but its turbocharger is considered extremely vulnerable

    OUR ASSESSMENT cannot sound otherwise than: hands off this car! Because even if the dealer, within the framework of its warranty obligations, makes a complete repair of the entire suspension, the horror of another breakdown will still not leave you for a minute. But, most likely, this 407 with its numerous defects will be exported, since it is simply not economically profitable to repair it.

    SOURCES OF PROBLEMS

    TECHNICAL DISASTER ON WHEELS- that's how the 407 can be called due to its unreasonably complex design. Any repair requires a lot of time, and when paying for it, amounts are generated that go far beyond the average class. Added to this is sloppy assembly: power windows break, mirror glass shakes in the air flow, six-speed automatic transmissions shift too sharply or freeze in high gears. Serial headlights are very dim, but if you find such a car with xenon, you will immediately have to take into account the cost of repairing the control unit. The question of choosing the lesser of two evils also arises in the case of engines. The basic rule here is: small gasoline engine in combination with manual transmission minimizes the risk of early repairs; and V6 - diesel or "automatic" - are more suitable for gambling enthusiasts.

    RESULT

    In the AUTO BILD TÜV report, the Peugeot 407 is ranked 123rd. Out of 125. And all because of its rattling suspension. But oil leaks also guarantee numerous expensive visits to service stations. You wouldn't recommend this car to your enemy. Neither its nine airbags nor its good road holding will make this diagnosis easier.
