Those who were more restrained stepped aside, others twirled their fingers at their temples: yes, for this money you can buy Ford Explorer, or Mitsubishi Pajero. The basic Prado is only a hundred thousand more expensive! Wait a minute, people, the H9 is better equipped. And what a comfortable suspension! But the people gave up: in two or three years a Japanese all-terrain vehicle can be sold with minimal loss of money, but a “Chinese” one will depreciate by half - and in five years you won’t be able to get rid of it at all.

Representatives of the Haval brand (this is the luxury division of Great Wall) do not think that they have gone too far with the price. For them, N9 is a kind of manifesto, a declaration that they have reached the coveted level when they can compete on equal terms with the leaders of the genre.

I remembered one story that happened to me six years ago in Shanghai. Half an hour before the dinner party, excuse me, my trousers tore. The ergonomics were carefully worked out; no obvious punctures were found. And visibility is good. But the picture from the rear view camera is too faded, the screen clearly lacks brightness. A luxurious-sounding audio system with Infinity acoustics, electrically adjustable seats with memory, adaptive headlights, a sunroof, three-zone climate control - all this is basic equipment. Living in the second row is also good. There is plenty of space, parts of the sofa divided in a ratio of 60:40 can be moved longitudinally and the angle of the backrests can be adjusted. There is an armrest, cup holders, air ducts in the door pillars and on the ceiling, and individual lighting with touch control. The third row of seats is included in the basic equipment of the Nine. You don’t feel particularly tight in them, but the comfort of fit is poor: the knees are pulled up to the chest.

AT LEAST TO THE END OF THE EARTH, AT LEAST TO THE EDGE

On the move, the H9 resembles American all-terrain dreadnoughts from the 1990s: a light steering wheel with ephemeral feedback, large rolls in turns. And a very, very soft ride. At the same time, the suspension holds up well to impacts and does not break even on serious gullies. Amazing energy intensity! To fully match the image, all that is missing is the multi-liter gurgling of the V8 engine. Under the hood there are only four cylinders and two liters of displacement. But - a twin-scroll turbocharger, thanks to which the “four” develops a quite decent 218 hp. Direct injection, two balancer shafts, variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust - the creators claim that they developed everything themselves. One way or another, this is the most powerful “Chinese” I’ve ever driven. If you drive at half pedal, no problems. The car accelerates confidently, giving rise to the feeling that there is still reserve. But if you press the pedal to the floor, there’s no one there, the H9 doesn’t go faster. There are no factory data on acceleration. It feels like the H9 accelerates to hundreds in about ten seconds.

The ZF six-speed automatic isn't very quick, but when you switch to sport mode, things pick up and the H9 drives more fun. However, the competitors mentioned above will be more dynamic. What I really didn't like was the brake drive setup. You press the pedal and press, but there is still no proper deceleration. And only at the very end of the pedal stroke, when the stomach has already sucked, the huge carcass begins to slow down sharply. Unlike other Haval cars, the big H9 can be safely called not a crossover, but an all-terrain vehicle: the body rests on a powerful frame, the rear suspension is a durable continuous axle. The front and rear overhangs are short, and the ground clearance reaches 206 mm. Not a bad arsenal.

I turn from the asphalt onto the dirt road. While it is level and relatively dry, the lion's share of engine traction goes to the rear axle. When slipping, up to 50% of the torque is redistributed to the front wheels via a multi-plate clutch. And here is a deep rut that has not yet dried out. I connected the downshift in advance. H9 overcame the obstacle effortlessly, not allowing for a second to doubt its capabilities. In general, Haval did not lose face off the asphalt. On it you can safely get out into moderate off-road conditions without denying yourself comfort. And in the city it is no slouch, although I would like the steering to be “more precise.” The Chinese succeeded decent car, which in terms of driving characteristics and equipment is quite comparable to its analogues from Korea and Japan. All that's missing is the magic of the brand. After all, what is Haval? For people from the market - an empty phrase. And for you?

Two steps forward

About ten years ago, when the first Chinese cars were brought to Russia, their build quality did not stand up to criticism. Iron that begins to rust within a month after purchase, loose nuts, crookedly fitted interior panels, and an unavoidable pungent smell in the cabin. But then the situation began to change, and now many Chinese cars no longer cause shock. Great Wall all-terrain vehicles are especially well assembled - we were convinced of this by the example of the editorial Hover. And what is its relative Haval H9 like? Our meticulous specialist Gennady Emelkin immediately noticed that the quality of painting and fitting of body parts is at the level of Japanese and European cars. The engine compartment also left a good impression: you can feel the production culture! There is a double seal around the perimeter, gas struts, neat wiring and generous sound insulation, which we found even under the motor decorative plastic cover. But there are still questions. Why is the fuse diagram in Chinese? Even a specialized service is unlikely to deal with this. And for some reason the apron of the gas tank neck does not have a drain groove - after the rain, water has accumulated in it.

The protective sticker in the trunk opening is installed in the wrong place and does not perform its function. In the underground compartment I was surprised by a drawer without a soft pad - but the rest of the niches have one. The interior is well assembled, but there is a fly in the ointment: the backs of the front seats are playful, and the headrests shake. The soft pad on the back of the chair is securely fastened on only one side.


Verdict: Haval H9 is assembled more carefully than mass-produced Chinese brands. And the materials are decent. But the Chinese have not yet achieved the ideal. In addition, the service life of the machine is not clear - only time will answer this question.

The largest and most expensive all-terrain vehicle in the range of the Chinese brand. It entered the Chinese market only two and a half years ago, but an updated version is already ready, and the modernization turned out to be far from cosmetic. The main news: the long-promised modification with a two-liter biturbodiesel engine, which produces 190 hp, has appeared in the range. and 420 Nm. For comparison: the 2.8 four-cylinder diesel engine of a similar-sized Toyota SUV Land Cruiser Prado produces 177 hp. and 450 Nm.

The previous 2.0-liter petrol turbo-four has been upgraded, its power increased from 218 to 251 hp, and torque from 324 to 355 Nm. Both engines are paired with a new ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the six-speed gearbox. The company promises that this will reduce the fuel consumption of a gasoline SUV by about 1-2 l/100 km. The all-wheel drive transmission is the same: with a multi-plate clutch driving the front wheels and a reduction gear.

On the outside, the Haval H9 remains almost unchanged: it has a new front bumper and a radiator grille with five chrome fins instead of three. The massive running boards have disappeared from the thresholds - instead, folding “steps” have appeared that move out from under the bottom when the doors are opened.

The interior at first glance is the same, but the driver now faces a new instrument cluster, the central place of which is occupied by a seven-inch color display: it displays the speedometer, data trip computer and other background information. The casing of the central tunnel has been changed: all buttons and switches are assembled into one block, and instead of the previous “automatic” lever, a non-locking selector is now installed, although this is rather a minus.

The list of options has been seriously expanded. Instead of a regular sunroof, there is a large glass insert with a sliding section, and the rear view camera is complemented by a surround view system. Automatic braking and lane marking monitoring systems, adaptive cruise control and a parking assistant have appeared.

The updated Haval H9 SUVs will arrive at Chinese dealers at the end of May. Pre-reform cars in China cost from 30 to 40 thousand dollars, but after modernization the prices will probably increase. Last year, 11.5 thousand cars were sold in the domestic market. In Russia, the “nine” is offered in a single fixed configuration for 2.3 million rubles. Demand is expectedly sluggish: last year 72 cars were registered with the traffic police. Nothing is known yet about the release date of the updated version on our market, although diesel could boost sales.
