Many people like this type of check valves more because of their miniature size. This is a very small cylinder with a rotary valve installed inside. It may consist of two parts, which are attached to the central rod, or it may look like a small plate, in one place attached to the wall of the housing using a spring.

Despite its compactness, it is better not to install this type of check valve on a sewer: this is plumbing equipment and it will not work well on a sewer. The second disadvantage is the impossibility of quick cleaning - the design is such that you can only get to the valve by disassembling the connection.

What are they made of and what sizes do they come in?

The most common sewer check valves are made of plastic (PVC) and cast iron. If your sewer pipes are plastic, it makes sense to install the same valve, choosing it according to size. Connection type

The product can be connected in two ways:

  • For a common sewer pipe - a valve with a diameter of 110 mm or more, with greater throughput;
  • for the outlet of each plumbing fixture. Internal wiring is usually made from pipes with a diameter of 50 mm. The valves should have the same dimensions. If the system circuit is assembled from pipes with a diameter of 32 mm or 40 mm, special adapters are used when connecting a device with DN = 50 mm.

The devices are installed at the junction of pipes, turning 90º both inside and outside buildings.


According to the method of connection to the process, they are divided into:

  • threaded;
  • coupling;
  • flanged;
  • for welding.

Device

The valve design consists of a hexagonal body, the cavity of which is divided into several zones:

  • the receiving part located before the shut-off organ. This area is intended to connect the inlet to the wastewater pipeline;
  • limiter. Provides unhindered passage of drain water in only one direction and locks the valve in case of reverse movement;
  • a locking device fixation system with an additional function of an inspection hatch;
  • graduation part. It is designed to ensure the exit of liquid from the restrictor area and the connection of the device to the outlet line.

The design of all working zones comes in different design options, but the operating principle is the same for all models of check valves.

Principle of operation

The principle of operation of a check valve is based on blocking the passage with a shutter element under the influence of a wastewater flow moving in the opposite direction.


If the flow of liquid stops, then the pressure of the medium in the inlet pipe is compared with the pressure in the outlet pipe of the device, and the shutter body, under the influence of gravity, the compression force of a spring or a lever-load mechanism, blocks the passage, closing the valve.

Types and designs

There are several types of check valves on sale that prevent wastewater from flooding the premises. They are divided by:

  • design features - lifting, ball, wafer;
  • material for manufacturing body parts - steel, cast iron, plastic;
  • the size of the inlet and outlet openings.

Air dampers are used to block unpleasant odors from pipes and stabilize air pressure in the system. They are installed in houses where there is no drain pipe, and are placed at the highest point of the system in a vertical position or at a height (h1) of at least 35 cm from the drain.

Rotary paddle

The working body of valves of this type is a spring-loaded membrane (plate). It has the shape of a round petal, which is why the device got its name. If the flow of wastewater moves towards the outlet in the direction of the sewer riser, the membrane rotates, simultaneously moving to the upper part of the housing, and opens the passage hole. When the water flow moves in the opposite direction, it is pressed against the rim in the body cavity, closing the passage hole tightly and hermetically.

Some models are equipped with a manual shutter - a second plate, which is controlled by a push-button system located on the body.

The upper part of the device body has a removable cover for quick cleaning of the internal walls and mechanisms.

Wafer

This type of locking device has small dimensions. The body is made in the form of a hollow cylinder, inside of which there is a butterfly valve. It may take the form of a small disk, which is attached in one place by a spring to the wall of the housing, or consist of two doors attached to a rod passing through the center of the device.


The presence of seals on the valve body allows installation of the device without the use of additional gaskets. The device can be placed on vertical and horizontal sections of pipelines.

Lifting

This model of check valve is named after the method of operation of the shut-off element, since when drainage flows from plumbing fixtures into the drainage system, the shut-off moves upward. This happens under the action of a compression spring, which is pressed against by wastewater. Stopping the movement of drains in the “correct” direction leads to the spring unclamping and blocking the passage. When liquid waste enters from the reverse side, the passage is only blocked more tightly due to the nonlinear shape of the housing.

Due to the complex configuration of the housing, the device is more susceptible to clogging and requires regular maintenance, which consists of removing the cover and unscrewing four bolts, cleaning or replacing the mechanism.

Ball

A device with a ball-shaped locking element, which, when the waste flows in the desired direction, moves into a special recess inside the body, opening the passage hole. When the flow stops, it returns to its place and blocks the cross section. When wastewater moves in the opposite direction, it blocks the lumen of the pipe.

However, due to this shape of the valve, liquid may leak during flooding, since the ball and the side wall do not always fit tightly to each other.

But it will be able to stop the main part of the reverse flow and will certainly prevent mass flooding.

Differences

Compact ball and rotary reed valves with a diameter of 50 mm are common in domestic systems. They can withstand quite a bit high pressure, arising in systems of multi-storey buildings.

Wafer products with a diameter of 160 millimeters or more have more impressive dimensions and are used primarily for working with large drainage and sewer systems of industrial enterprises.

Advantages and disadvantages

Such devices have the following advantages:

  • simple design;
  • simple installation and maintenance process;
  • efficiency;
  • the ability to prevent flooding of the premises with sewage;
  • reliability and durability.

The only downside is the rather high cost of the products and susceptibility to contamination.

You need to buy a device that has:

  • reliable design, made of durable materials that are resistant to aggressive environments and easy to maintain (have an easily removable cover for cleaning body parts);
  • automatic shut-off mechanism for reverse flow of wastewater;
  • manual adjustment in case of emergency.

In addition, the diameter of the valve bells must correspond to the diameter of the pipeline section where it will be installed.

The price of the product is influenced by:

  1. material used in production;
  2. design features;
  3. connection method;
  4. manufacturer company.

For example, a cast iron product with a diameter of 160 mm with a receiving type design can be purchased for $120 - $130, a PVC device with similar characteristics costs less, ranging from $70 - $90. The price of a PVC ball valve usually does not exceed $50 - $80.

Rules for installation and operation of the device

Check valves with a spring mechanism can be installed on the pipeline in any position; non-spring-loaded products are placed on a vertical pipe when the drains move from bottom to top or on a horizontal section of the system. In front of all types of devices, except for the ball valve, it is necessary to install a mesh filter to protect against large particles in the drains. If it is necessary to install such a product for a pressure sewer system, then it is placed after the pumping equipment.


The installation location must be chosen so that the device body is not exposed to bending, torsion, tension or compression loads from the connected pipes.

The device operates to pass flow in one direction only, the direction of which is indicated by an arrow on the body of the product. During installation, the valve must be placed in the specified direction.

You must work with the device carefully so as not to disturb paintwork body, which not only performs a decorative function, but also protects against corrosion.

Required tools and materials

To install a locking device with your own hands, the following tools and consumables are sufficient:

  • wrench or torque wrench;
  • roulette;
  • fum - ribbons and flax fiber;
  • special sealant.

Work progress

If you plan to install a check valve in a residential high-rise building, you must:

  • 24 hours before the start of installation, notify all residents about the upcoming work;
  • perform a shutdown using valves installed in the inlet section of the cold and hot water supply to prevent unauthorized entry of water into the sewerage system circuit;
  • notify all neighbors immediately about the very beginning of work to replace the device;
  • After completing installation of the product, turn on the water in the entrance.

The work itself on installing a device with a threaded connection type is carried out in the following sequence:

  • choose a location for installing the device and cut out a part of the pipe there that is equal in size to the length of the valve;
  • cut threads at the ends of the pipes;
  • clean the remaining chips;
  • take a strand of flax fiber of such length as to ensure the number of windings is 1.5 - 2 times greater than the number of thread turns and lay it clockwise, wrapping the entire length of the threaded section;
  • apply a layer of sealant over the wound flax;
  • Screw on the valve and tighten the fastening using a wrench or torque wrench.

Frequent errors and problems during installation

Among the most common mistakes when installing a shut-off device in a sewer are:

  • violation of the alignment of the pipeline at the installation site of the check valve, since any misalignment leads to a violation of the tightness during operation;
  • the direction of opening of the valves of the installed device does not correspond to the direction of flow of the transported medium;
  • lack of convenient access to the product for maintenance.
  • choose a valve based not on its lower price, but on its quality, since the costs of purchasing a device are not comparable to the costs of repairing a home if it is flooded with sewage;
  • Before installation, be sure to check the device for leaks. If it is not sealed enough, noise and vibration will be heard during operation. To fix the problem, you need to remove the cover and replace the edging or the shutter itself;
