The novelty has become a joint brainchild of the Japanese company Suzuki and the Italian automaker Fiat, while the ItalDesign studio worked on the design. It must be admitted that, despite this, it was the design that was the weakest point of the first SX4, and therefore in 2009 the car was subjected to a noticeable restyling, after which it appeared on the Russian market in 2010.

Recall that the Suzuki SX4 did not immediately become a crossover. Initially, the novelty was positioned as a front-wheel drive hatchback, but then it gradually retrained into an all-wheel drive model and even acquired a sedan version. Now, after a global update and transition to the next generation, the SX4 has finally established itself as a full-fledged subcompact crossover.

New SX4 noticeably "matured" in terms of appearance. The slightly absurd, "toy" pyramid body of the first generation has given way to a stylish, dynamic and modern look with hints of sportiness, thoughtful lines and aerodynamic contours. As for the diesel engine presented in Europe (118 hp power and 320 Nm of torque + 6-speed “mechanics”), its appearance on our market is possible only in the future, when all “fears” disappear from the Japanese manufacturer about the quality of Russian diesel fuel.

The Suzuki SX4 chassis concept has not changed. The front still uses an independent design based on MacPherson struts, and the rear uses a semi-independent suspension with a torsion beam. The suspension is quite energy-intensive and feels confident on dirt roads, but at the same time, the settings on the rear axle could be made softer. The all-wheel drive of the crossover is based on the redesigned AllGrip 4WD system, which has received an additional mode of operation, i.e. now there are four: "Auto", "Sport", "Snow / Mud" and "Lock". The rear axle, as before, is connected by a multi-plate friction clutch with an electromagnetic drive. At the same time, we note that for the Russian market, the clutch will be replaced with a more resistant to overheating, which often occurs when slipping in mud or snow. For the European market, a two-liter 135-horsepower turbodiesel with 320 Nm of torque is also available. Such a motor is offered exclusively with a 6-speed “mechanics”.

Petrol models are available in SZ3 or SZ4 2WD (front wheel drive) or 4x4 SZ5 format with non-permanent/automatic all wheel drive. Previously, the all-wheel drive version came only with a manual transmission - after restyling, they began to offer an automatic for it.

Remarkable is the fact that the SX4 is assembled in Japan and Hungary. The differences between these versions come down to trifles. In the "Hungarian" the back of the rear seat is folded in a ratio of 60:40, while in the "Japanese" it can only be folded in its entirety. The clearance of the all-wheel drive SX4 of the Hungarian assembly is 10 mm more and is 185 mm (for the Japanese - 175 mm). The “European” has a different front bumper and a set of color options, a two-tone upholstery, a battery with a capacity increased to 60 Ah, an antenna that has moved from the rear of the body to the front edge of the windshield, the orange color of the lower section of the rear lights (instead of white), the square shape of cup holders etc.

Standard equipment includes air conditioning, electric and heated mirrors, 4 power windows, CD / MP3 radio, heated seats, ABS and front airbags.

In addition to the hatchback, the Suzuki SX4 Sedan has also been updated. The changes are similar to the five-door car - a more powerful and high-torque engine (112 hp, 150 Nm), a different climate control unit and an additional speaker in the interior, as well as new 16-inch wheel disks, grille and aerodynamic body kit (in the Aero version).

In 2013, the new generation Suzuki SX4 compact crossover premiered at the Geneva Motor Show. The car is a production version of the concept S-Cross, first introduced in September 2012 at the Paris Motor Show. It is noteworthy that the S-Cross prefix has gained a foothold in European markets, in Russia the crossover was called the Suzuki New SX4. At the same time, the first generation crossovers will remain on sale until 2015, but already under the name Suzuki SX4 Classic.

The car is based on a radically redesigned predecessor platform, from which no more than 5% of old parts remain. The New SX4 is 4300mm long (150mm longer than its predecessor), 1765mm wide (+10mm), 1575mm high (+10mm) and has a wheelbase of 2600mm (+100mm) . But at the same time, compared to the previous SX4 new body lighter by 60 kg, due to the wider use of high-strength steels, of which the pillars and sills of the body are made, as well as the side members and part of the internal amplifiers. The curb weight of the car in the basic equipment is 1085 kg, in the top versions it increases to 1190 kg.

The exterior has become more stylish, dynamic and modern. With a touch of sportiness, thoughtful lines and aerodynamic contours. By the way, the drag coefficient is 0.33. The ground clearance of the crossover is 180 mm for cars with 16-inch wheels. Top versions decorated with alloy wheels, an inch more, the distance to the ground less than five millimeters. European Suzuki SX4 S-cross clearance 170 and 165 mm respectively.

The interior is simple, but high quality. Engineers and designers of the Japanese automaker tried to remove all unnecessary and make the front panel as ergonomic as possible in the spirit of modernity. All keys, including power window controls, are backlit. The steering column is adjustable in two directions. And in a wide range. Standard equipment includes: 16-inch wheels, roof rails, full power accessories, air conditioning, a standard audio system with 4 speakers, fabric interior, halogen optics, power mirrors, heated front seats, trip computer, cruise control and a full range of security systems, including ESP and seven airbags. Separate climate control is available starting with the intermediate GLX, and a navigation system and a two-piece panoramic sunroof measuring 800 x 560 mm are available in the more expensive GLX +.

The crossover is offered with one of two 1.6-liter engines to choose from - gasoline and diesel. The petrol engine can be paired with a five-speed “mechanics”, and the diesel engine can be paired with a six-speed one. For both motors, a CTV variator is also available, which has a seven-speed manual mode with a paddle shifter. The manufacturer claims that the emissions of the New SX4 are among the lowest in the class. The front-wheel-drive diesel crossover emits 110 grams of CO2 per kilometer, while the top-end petrol versions emit 136 grams per kilometer.

For the Russian market, only the petrol "four" is available. By the way, it has been thoroughly modernized. She has a lightweight crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons. The exhaust manifold has become lighter by 1.2 kg, and the radiator and exhaust system from attachments. In order to reduce fuel consumption, the stiffness of the valve actuator springs has been reduced, and the oil pump has new, narrower bearings. The updated engine complies with Euro-6 standards.

When equipped with a manual transmission gasoline engine, the maximum speed of the car is about 180 km / h, and the starting acceleration time from 0 to 100 km / h is about 11.0 seconds. In terms of efficiency, a gasoline engine with “mechanics” is quite good: on the highway, AI-95 gasoline consumption is about 5.0 liters, in the city, consumption increases to 6.8 liters, but in mixed mode, the crossover will need about 5.6 liters. Such a noticeable reduction in fuel consumption was achieved not only by upgrading the engine, but also by reconfiguring the manual transmission, which extended the gear ratios of 3, 4 and 5 steps.

Indicators gasoline engine paired with a variator is somewhat more modest. The upper speed limit is declared at around 170-175 km / h (165 km / h for 4WD). Starting acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is about 12.4 seconds. Fuel consumption on the highway is 5.0 liters per 100 km, in the city - 6.9 liters, and in mixed mode - 5.7 liters. For all-wheel drive versions of the crossover with any type of gearbox, an additional "increase" in fuel consumption will be approximately 0.3 liters for every 100 km.

Buyers will be able to purchase both front- and sub-wheel drive vehicles. Moreover, the latter is equipped with new generation ALLGRIP all-wheel drive technology with four operating modes. Auto mode prioritizes fuel economy under normal driving conditions by engaging the rear wheels when spinning. In Sport, a special engine management program pumps more fuel into the cylinders, sharpens the response of the accelerator, and also changes the algorithm for the CVT, ESP and power steering. The sport mode can be activated when driving on winding roads with a lot of turns. Snow mode (Snow) is designed for snowy, unpaved and slippery surfaces, and Lock (Lock) includes a differential lock and is necessary to rescue a car stuck in snow, mud or sand.

Suspension: front independent design based on McPherson struts, rear uses a semi-independent suspension with a torsion beam. And regardless of the type of drive. The differences between the 4x4 versions are only in different settings of the elastic elements and in a separate subframe on which the rear differential is mounted. To reduce the weight of unsprung parts, the floating brake calipers are cast from aluminum alloy.

In terms of driver and passenger safety, the Suzuki New SX4/SX4 S-cross offers a fairly serious package that includes seven airbags and a number of electronic systems at once, among which we highlight ABS, EBD, ESP and BAS. In addition, the developers have worked quite seriously on the bodywork, strengthening the design of the doors, as well as adding programmable deformation zones in the front of the car.
