Weak points of the Kia Sorento 2 restyling. What is the actual engine life of the Kia Sorento?

The first generation Kia Sorento entered the automobile market in 2002. Structurally, it was frame SUV. In 2006, the Kia Sorento underwent a restyling, during which the design was slightly changed and the engine range was adjusted. In 2009, it was replaced by a second generation model.

Kia Sorento for the Russian consumer was assembled both in Korea and in our homeland - at IzhAvto (since August 2005). Production of the SUV was suspended in 2009 due to a lack of working capital for the purchase of vehicle kits. From May to September 2011, an additional small batch of 800 cars was produced as part of a commitment to Kia Motors.

Engines

Before restyling, the Kia Sorento was equipped with a 2.5 CRDi turbodiesel (140 hp) and two naturally aspirated petrol engines of 2.4 liters (140 hp) and 3.5 liters (197 hp). After restyling, the turbodiesel power was increased to 170 hp, and the gasoline units were replaced by a 3.3-liter V6 (247 hp).

The diesel engine can confidently be considered the most unfavorable to operate. One of the main reasons for his capriciousness is low quality"diesel fuel", which often leads to failure of elements fuel system, and, as a result, to interruptions in operation and difficulty starting. Low-quality diesel fuel, often dry, not having sufficient lubricating properties, provokes the appearance of scuffing in the fuel injection pump. As a result, the resulting metal impurities enter the fuel rail, and from there into the tank and fuel injectors.

When replacing glow plugs after 100,000 km, problems associated with “sticking” may occur. This can lead to the spark plug body breaking off when unscrewing.

Difficulty starting diesel engine or spontaneous stopping while driving is caused by overflowing nozzles. The problem appears after 160 - 180 thousand km. In this case, the injectors will have to be replaced or repaired. A bulkhead will cost 6-7 thousand rubles per injector, and a new one costs about 8-11 thousand rubles. The difference is not that big, but a “fresh” injector will last much longer than a reconditioned one.

The diesel engine gave unpleasant surprises to the owners of the late 2008-early 2009 Sorento with a restyled engine of increased power. At speeds close to maximum, the connecting rod of one of the pistons broke, which, while rotating, “grinded” the engine. The power unit was due for replacement. The cases are not widespread, but occurred with runs of more than 20 - 90 thousand km.

On an updated turbodiesel, the injector mounting bolt often broke off, followed by its “shooting out” - more often than not the 4th injector. The “shooting” took place after a mileage of more than 70–90 thousand km. Kia did not deny the problem and tried to fix it by replacing the mounting bolt with a more durable one. As often happens, official services carried out the recall campaign in bad faith, and the cases of some owners were repeated more than once.

The turbine, in general, has no major complaints. On a modified diesel engine it fails more often. The first signs of the approaching “end” are a whistle, an increase in radial play, and the appearance of oil in the air duct behind the turbine (after 100,000 km). The turbine itself confidently maintains 150 – 170 thousand km. Further performance depends on operating conditions. Rebuilding it will cost about 15,000 rubles, replacing it with a new one will require about 30 thousand rubles, and work will cost 6–7 thousand rubles.

Timing chain drive on this engine official services recommend changing every 90 - 100 thousand km. The chain begins to stretch and “rattle” after 100 – 120 thousand km, and by 150,000 km, it, as a rule, has already stretched to unacceptable sizes. In addition, cases of its breakage after 90–120 thousand km have been recorded. Replacement work will cost 8-10 thousand rubles.

The reason for the unstable operation of the turbodiesel is Idling with a mileage of more than 160 - 200 thousand km, the fuel injection pump pressure reducing valve becomes used. The injection pump itself runs more than 200 - 220 thousand km.

Gasoline Kia engines Sorento is more unpretentious, but also has weak spots. These engines are equipped with a timing belt drive with a service replacement interval of 60 thousand km.

The atmospheric 2.4 liter has an amazing feature - a tendency to overheat in cold weather. The reason is the thermostat is not working properly. The average temperature of a warm engine in winter is about 98-100 degrees, while the lower pipe of the cooling system remains cold, and the fan “threats”, cooling the engine. KIA tried to solve this problem, but to no avail. Some craftsmen tried to find an analogue of the thermostat from other cars, but such attempts also did not lead to a positive result. With a mileage of more than 100–120 thousand km, a 2.4 liter gasoline engine begins to “eat up” the oil - up to 300–800 g. per 1000 km.

On 3.5 liter engines, after 100,000 km, the crankshaft drive belt pulley breaks due to the destruction of the fixing bolt. It all starts with runout on the old damper pulley as a result of wear. If the pulley is torn off, it is better to replace it with a new one (about 5 thousand rubles). Otherwise, the breakdown will soon recur.

Also, the 3.5 liter engine is characterized by air leaks in the intake manifold, which leads to unstable operation. After 100 - 120 thousand km, there were cases of the intake manifold flap breaking, which went straight into the cylinder. To eliminate the consequences, you will have to shell out about 30 thousand rubles. In 2005, KIA conducted a service campaign to eliminate a defect that could cause the damper to break.

The 3.3 liter petrol has not yet shown itself to be anything serious. Among the shortcomings, one can note “rattling” for 2-3 seconds after starting a cold engine, apparently associated with a lack of oil pressure for lubrication in the first seconds of operation.

Tension roller drive belt mounted units are handed over at a mileage of 120 - 150 thousand km. The reason is poor quality bearing lubrication. The simple procedure of removing old grease and filling with new one significantly extends the life of the bearing and eliminates the possibility of premature belt wear or rupture.

The service life of the pump (water cooling pump) is more than 100 - 120 thousand km. After 120 - 150 thousand km, the expansion tank may leak. The catalyst will most likely have to be replaced after 100 - 150 thousand km.

Transmission

Gearboxes, in general, are quite reliable and do not cause any complaints. The clutch life of a manual transmission is at least 100 – 120 thousand km. Replacing it along with the work will cost 9-10 thousand rubles for a non-specialized service and 18-20 thousand rubles for “officials”.

In rare cases, an automatic transmission begins to become very dull, which is mainly cured by flashing the ECU. On pre-restayling cars, incorrect readings of the mass air flow sensor can cause a disruption in the transmission algorithm and untimely gear shifting. Sensor resource mass flow air about 120 - 140 thousand km. The cost of a new one is about 1.5 - 2 thousand rubles, but it is often possible to revive it after careful cleaning.

When operating the Kia Sorento, do not forget to grout the crosspieces and splines of the rear propeller shaft, the front shaft crosspieces and the transfer case splines. Oil seals run for at least 120 – 140 thousand km.

Chassis

The Sorento's suspension is quite strong. The struts and bushings of the stabilizers are the first to go - after 80 - 100 thousand km. A little later, it’s the turn of the ball joints - with a mileage of 120 – 140 thousand km. Next come shock absorbers with a mileage of 140 - 150 thousand km. and silent blocks of levers. At the same time, the steering tips fit. Front wheel bearings(1 - 2 thousand rubles), most likely, will have to be replaced after 120 - 160 thousand km.

The steering rack is a problem area of an SUV, recognized by the officials. In a short time, the new rack develops the necessary play and begins to “snot” or tap. But at the same time, her condition rarely worsens. Play or “sweating” may appear after 140 – 160 thousand km. A repair kit will cost 2 thousand rubles, a new rail will cost 15-20 thousand rubles.

With a mileage of more than 150 - 190 thousand km, the power steering pump may fail, as a result of which the fluid will begin to foam, and when turning the steering wheel, the forces will change and a hum will appear.

Front brake pads They run more than 40 thousand km, the rear ones are twice as long - 80 – 100 thousand km. The front brake discs have a service life of 80–100 thousand km. The failure of the brake pedal to be pressed during a long stop is a common problem, and the brake cylinder is to blame. Replacing it will cost 5-6 thousand rubles. With a mileage of more than 100 - 120 thousand km, it may be necessary to replace the brake vacuum pump, which begins to leak. After 5-6 years, it is necessary to more carefully monitor the condition of the brake hoses, on the surface of which “hernias” may appear - more often on the front ones. Several owners found themselves in an unpleasant situation due to rupture of hoses in places where “hernias” formed.

Typical problems and malfunctions

The paintwork and body hardware begins to wear out on some units older than 9 years. Corrosion appears in chipped areas, on the trunk door and rear wheel arches covered by doors. Over time, the plastic body kit begins to peel off.

The interior can hardly be called creaky. Sometimes a squeak appears in the center between the dashboard and the windshield. As a rule, the source is noise insulation rubbing against metal. In cold weather, closed doors squeak. After 100,000 km, sometimes the driver's window begins to tap slightly.

Many people complain about the driver's side seat belt not being retractable. Replacing the belt and reel does not solve the problem.

Often, after trying to turn on the glass blowing with a separate button, clicks become audible in the ventilation system, which happens with a mileage of more than 70 - 90 thousand km and more often on “restyles”. They arise due to jamming of the windshield blower damper drive. Lubricating the unit will not help in this case. With further operation with a defect, the teeth on the gear or its guides may break off. To replace the damper drive actuator you will need to pay 2 - 3 thousand rubles and 500 rubles for the damper lever.

On the 2002 Sorento, a frankly weak heater radiator was installed, which could barely cope with Russian frosts. Later, in 2003, the radiator was modified, and the interior became noticeably warmer. But this is not enough for an SUV with a diesel engine; there is still not enough heat here in winter. Poor flow distribution results in the driver’s feet receiving little warm air, while the neighbor on the right has more than enough. In pursuit of comfort, do not forget that in most cases, warming up depends on the condition cabin filter, which needs to be changed more often here.

The generator “fails” after 160–180 thousand km - more often due to brush wear (1.5–2 thousand rubles) or diode bridge. The generator pulley bearing “falls apart” even earlier – after 120 – 140 thousand km.

Problems with the starter appear after a mileage of more than 100 thousand km. Mainly due to loss of contact at the solenoid relay terminal or wear of the brushes.

After 140 - 160 thousand km, the fuel level indicator sometimes begins to give incorrect readings, and the low fuel remaining lamp lights up prematurely. The reason is worn contacts on the fuel level sensor board. The cost of a new sensor is 1.5 - 2 thousand rubles.

One of the unresolved electrical problems is the lighting of the “AIR BAG” lamp and the appearance of the “high resistance of the driver’s airbag” error. More often this happens after a short circuit in the circuit or an “incorrect” alarm installation.

In rare cases, “glitches” appear in the power window control unit, accompanied by spontaneous lowering of the windows.

Conclusion

You should stay away from used diesel Kia Sorentos - due to the capriciousness of the fuel system and the cold interior in winter. However, everything can be fixed with additional investment. Big plus - reliability gasoline engines, transmissions, gearboxes and suspension survivability.

Advantages and disadvantages of Kia Sorento Prime 2018-2019 in a new body identified based on reviews real owners. More detailed pros and cons of the Kia Sorento 3 Prime petrol 2.4 and 3.3 and diesel 2.2D with automatic transmission can be found in the stories below.

Owner reviews

In the cabin of the new Sorento Prime, compared to the regular Sorento, there are seats with a large number of adjustments, and the shape itself is noticeably more comfortable. I'm a tall guy, it's often difficult to choose the settings, but here there's no problem. I really liked the music - the sound is soft and deep.

True, the car accelerates on the move on the highway, which is a little annoying when overtaking - you have to switch to manual transmission control mode. But the Prime eats about ten liters on the highway, which is a bit much for a modern diesel engine. Although, if we are talking about the premium class, then, of course, it has its own attitude to consumption.

On dirt and gravel roads, if you do not forcibly disable the clutch lock, the clutch discs close, and the car behaves very confidently. True, I don’t advise you to abuse this - although this system has a lot of advantages, it has a significant drawback: it is susceptible to overheating.

Video review

After 500 km I noticed a chip on the windshield, the automatic transmission was a bit brooding, very poor sound insulation - it simply wasn’t there! I paid about 40,000 rubles for sound insulation and anti-gravel treatment of the bottom, but it was no use - the noise was still very loud.

The floor covering under the front passenger seat has been cut through for viewing. car vin, the coating sticks out in different sides- very unpleasant!
The clock shows one hour ahead, the warranty engineer said that the firmware is outdated, and there is no new one yet. It turns out that they are selling cars with initially outdated firmware?!

The gearshift lever shifts with some unpleasant jerks! But the most important thing: by car for 2.3 million rubles high beam like the 1965 Zaporozhets!

Review of diesel Kia Sorento Prime 2.2d (200 hp) AT 2016

Comparing with the previous generation, which I drove since 2010, we note the following. Well, in general, these are two different cars.

Pros: the car has changed quite radically during appearance, comfort, interior decoration, dynamics. Average consumption is up to 8 liters, almost as stated (7.6). The acceleration dynamics are impressive. By the way, the 2.2 liter engine produces the same as, for example, a 3.2 liter diesel engine from Mitsubishi, and the appetite is almost one and a half times less.

When the doors are closed, they close the sills, so even if the street is a complete swamp, you will get into the car with clean trousers.

Where can I buy?

The consumption declared by the manufacturer in the city, as always, does not correspond to reality: in eco mode 19 liters (according to the computer).

In the cabin, after the engine warms up, there is a smell of some kind of burnt substance... plastic or something similar... When I contacted the dealer, I received the answer: “the engine is burning.” So, the “engine” is already burning for the sixth thousand... and it is burning, emitting the acrid smell of a chemically aggressive element. It becomes impossible to breathe in the cabin.

The passenger side mirror no longer folds out automatically after being parked for a long time (night or day).

Ugly navigation system. More precisely, not the system itself, but its software support - it simply does not exist (it is announced, but it is not there), it is not possible to update the cards (maps from 2006 are installed in a car manufactured in 2015).

Parking cameras are practically useless in our muddy conditions. Either you need to get out of the car and wipe them before each parking, or... use the mirrors, not paying attention to the cameras.

The owner drives a 2015 Kia Sorento Prime 2.4 automatic

I liked the new Sorento. I took the top-end package, I really wanted it high-quality acoustics, because this was not enough in the previous car, but I don’t want to farm collectively. So, on May 11, I picked up my swallow and drove a little over a thousand kilometers in a month. During the June holidays, I went to St. Petersburg with my family and regretted it... While driving through Tver, the Sorento stalled in motion, and when I tried to start it, there was a terrible knocking sound in the engine.

Result: 6 am, highway, and I have a broken car. Call Kia: Roadside Assistance. They say they are evacuating. They take it to the dealer in Tver, quickly determine that the repair is under warranty (of course!), but there are no replacement cars, no spare parts, come back in a week. All requests to evacuate the car to Moscow and figure out what the problem is there are answered with a refusal.

And somehow I can’t afford to abandon my car on a highway 200 km from home. With things, bicycles... In short, after six hours of negotiations, threats and strikes, I ordered a tow truck myself and paid for it out of my own pocket.

The other day they reported that this was a manufacturing defect in the third cylinder; they have not yet done a full defect detection; they will complete it tomorrow, after which they will send the results to KIA. Set up to return the car or replace the complete engine.

Review of Kia Sorento Prime 2.2d automatic 2017.

Convenient control: the response to the gas and brake pedals is the most correct. All control buttons for seat heating, steering wheel, seat ventilation - everything is convenient and in the right places.

The car is quite comfortable, you don’t get tired on a long trip. Large trunk volume, there is a third row, it is even suitable for an adult (up to 175 cm). Consumption is approximately 11.5 liters per hundred, and this is with 249 “horses”!

Among the shortcomings, I would like to mention the music. It is written that the acoustics are Infiniti, but they are so-so in comparison with the BMW, which I drove for 10 years, and there was Harman/Kardon.

The climate control is also so-so, again in comparison with BMW, where you set it once and forget it. The Bavarians' windows have never fogged up, but in Sorento Prime they start to sweat when it rains.

The air conditioner also automatically turns on with frosty air, rather than warm, dry air. However, it does not turn off itself and you have to completely turn off all climate control.

The owner drives a Kia Sorento Prime 3.3 (249 hp) automatic 2017

Exploiting this car 1 year. In general, the impressions are only positive, I am satisfied with the car. It has no competitors in this price category.

The Sorento handles the road well. The behavior is almost like that of a regular sedan or station wagon. Low consumption fuel, mixed - about 10 liters, highway - 7.5 liters.

Large trunk. Good diesel engine thrust. Large power reserve. In the cabin, the engine is not audible at all, and there is no vibration on the steering wheel. Good quality interior trim. Good body paint, not a single chip in a year, although the body was coated with liquid glass.

The “Lux” package does not have a rain sensor and memory settings for the driver’s seat. There were problems with the air conditioner. I replaced the chrome door trims under warranty. There were also problems with antifreeze consumption. It was not fixed under warranty (diagnostics did not reveal a leak, but the problem disappeared). The included Nexen tires do not grip the road well (replaced with Goodyear Efficientgrip SUV).

On Russian market cars KIA Sorento were supplied from the main factories of the Korean concern. In August 2005, assembly of this SUV was launched at the IzhAvto automobile plant. Four years later, production of the KIA Sorento in Russia was discontinued due to lack of funds to purchase car kits. In May-September 2011, the IzhAvto plant assembled 800 cars in order to fulfill its obligations to the KIA Motors concern.

In the KIA Sorento models of the first version, three types of power units were installed:

The restyling of the model in 2006 made it possible to increase the power of the diesel engine to 170 l/s. The range of power units was replenished with a 3.3 liter petrol engine with a power of 247 l/s.

Main malfunctions of the KIA Sorento diesel engine

Practice has shown that the most problematic thing in a KIA Sorento is the diesel engine. The components of the fuel supply system quickly become unusable, causing difficulties in starting the unit and interruptions in its operation. In the fuel injection pump, friction of parts is observed, which causes scuffing. Metal particles pass along the fuel rail into the tank and injectors.

The main factor in the premature occurrence of fuel system malfunctions and engine malfunctions is poor-quality “dry” diesel fuel, which does not contain sufficient lubricants.

In the KIA Sorento diesel, problems may arise when it is necessary to replace the spark plugs. With a mileage exceeding a hundred thousand km, they “stick”. When unscrewing, the housing may break off.

Owners of an SUV, after driving over 150,000 km, often have to deal with the fact that the engine stalls while driving or becomes capricious when starting. Overflow injectors create these problems. They need to be repaired or replaced. The cost of new elements ranges from 8-11 thousand rubles. You will have to pay about 7 thousand rubles to overhaul the injectors. Since the difference in amounts is negligible, it is worth investing in new items as they will last much longer.

Breakdowns in diesel engines of restyled models

The restyled models with a more powerful diesel unit were not without problems. There have been cases when, when working with a load of maximum speed The piston connecting rod broke. As a result, engine elements were broken during rotation. The power unit has to be changed. Such breakdowns cannot be called common, but still, the risk of this malfunction of the KIA Sorento diesel exists and appears after a mileage of over 20,000 km.

Often, owners of cars that have traveled more than 70,000 km are faced with such a problem as the “firing” of the valve due to a broken bolt. Most often, failure occurs on the 4th element. The manufacturer admits the defect; in order to eliminate it, the bolts were replaced with more durable options.

There are no particular complaints about the turbine. At normal conditions car operation, it flawlessly performs its functions up to 170 thousand. After hundreds of thousands of kilometers, symptoms of malfunctions may appear. The first “bell” is a whistle, radial play increases, and oil appears in the air duct. KIA repair in this case it will cost 15,000 rubles. The turbine can be replaced. It costs approximately 30,000 rubles. The service will charge 6-7 thousand rubles for installation.

The engine is equipped chain drive Timing belt According to the recommendation of experts, it needs to be replaced after hundreds of thousands of km have been traveled. Otherwise, the chain stretches, begins to rattle, and by 150,000 it acquires unacceptable dimensions. There were cases of drive failures after 120 thousand. Chain replacement work costs between 8-10 thousand rubles.

Life time fuel pump designed for 220,000 km. With a mileage of 140-180 thousand km, instability of its idle operation may be observed, associated with problems in the pressure reducing valve.

Problems with KIA Sorento gasoline engines

Atmospheric power units more stable. These motors are equipped with belt drives, which must be changed after traveling sixty thousand km.

The main problems with KS gasoline 2.4 are related to overheating in the winter months. The following picture is observed:

  • the engine warms up to 100°C;
  • the pipe in the cooling system does not heat up;
  • The fan runs to cool the motor.

The cause of the problem is a malfunction of the thermostat. The manufacturer was unable to fix this problem. Some owners have attempted to replace the thermostat with analogues from other models, but this does not bring results. Another problem with this engine is a significant increase in oil consumption after hundreds of thousands of mileage.

During operation, weak points were also identified in the 3.5 liter unit. The bolt securing the crankshaft drive pulley is destroyed. If the pulley breaks, it is advisable to replace it, otherwise the breakdown will soon appear again. This element costs about 5 thousand rubles.

Often, owners of these models are faced with unstable engine operation due to air leaks during intake manifold. In cars with mileage exceeding 100,000, there were breaks in the valve that penetrated the cylinder. This KIA Sorento malfunction can be repaired by a service center for 30 thousand rubles. The concern carried out a campaign to eliminate this deficiency in 2005.

The owners had no serious complaints about the 3.3 engine.

Maintenance of KIA Sorento

Extending the life of the car and eliminating many of the problems that arise with the KIA Sorento allows careful attention technical means, timely replacement of elements for which a certain service life is provided. Owners should know the lifespan of some important components and parts:

  1. Drive tension roller - 130 thousand km.
  2. Water cooling system pump - 110 thousand km.
  3. Catalyst - 120 thousand km.
  4. Steering rack - 150 thousand km.
  5. Generator - 170 thousand km.
  6. Fuel level sensor - 150 thousand km.

Those KIA service, like any other car, first of all includes preventive work With braking system. This is a guarantee of the safety of the driver and passengers. After a mileage of 40,000 km, the KIA pads on the front discs need to be replaced. The rear elements last longer and can be replaced after one hundred thousand mileage. At the same time, the vacuum pump may become unusable. It is necessary to check the integrity of the hoses on which hernia formations occur, creating a risk of rupture.

Periodically it is necessary to inject the splines of the transfer case and driveshaft, and the shaft crosspieces. The cycle for replacing oil seals is 110 thousand km. Many faults all-wheel drive Kia Sorento are associated with their wear and tear.

These SUVs feature durable, reliable suspension. In order to keep it in excellent condition, after ninety thousand kilometers you need to replace the bushings and stabilizer struts, after 120,000 you will have to replace the ball joints, and after another twenty thousand it will be time to install new silent blocks and shock absorbers.

Overall, owners and experts believe that the quality and cost of this SUV are in the ideal ratio. Many typical KIA Sorento breakdowns can be prevented and eliminated without exorbitant costs.

  6. Fuel level sensor - 150 thousand km.

Maintenance of a KIA, like any other car, primarily includes preventative work on the brake system.

Many malfunctions of the KIA Sorento all-wheel drive are associated with wear.

Overall, owners and experts believe that the quality and cost of this SUV are in an ideal balance. Many typical KIA Sorento breakdowns can be prevented and eliminated without exorbitant costs.

In 2009, Sorento began new life without reduction gear, with monocoque body, independent suspension and automatic all-wheel drive... Steep cliff. Breathtaking views of the Bay of Naples and the formidable Vesuvius.

From the speakers - the sweet voice of Robertino Loretti: “Come back to Sorrento, my love!” Now open your eyes. No, you are not in Italy in the “land of the sirens” in the Campania region. The company's region is now Korea, but you really managed to return to the Sorento - you are in the KIA Sorento, which has been bravely and skillfully crossing bays and conquering volcanoes since 2002. Although not as majestic as in the Apennines. Well, turn on the siren and get going!

In its first generation, the KIA Sorento is a typical universal SUV of the late 90s - early 2000s. Low profile frame design, continuous rear axle on springs and front independent suspension provided good handling on asphalt and acceptable cross-country ability off-road. After restyling in 2004, the Sorento began to be assembled in Izhevsk, and, according to the owners, this did not lead to any loss in quality. However, as if foreseeing a great future for the mid-size crossover, KIA management came to the decision not to update the outdated design, but to start from scratch. The KIA Sorento in its second generation took a decisive step onto the asphalt in 2009, and this action turned out to be both timely and promising.

Sorento started a new life with a monocoque body, without lowering, with a transverse engine, independent suspension and automatic all-wheel drive. This radically changed the behavior of the car on the asphalt, which alienated orthodox car enthusiasts, but in return brought many new supporters to the “Sorentists” camp.

YOU CAN'T PART UP WITH YOUR LOVED ONE

The Korean crossover, as is customary these days, shares its platform and units with its sister car, the Hyundai Santa Fe. Both, in turn, received the fifth-generation Sonata passenger platform. Our hero, who appeared three years later than the Santa Fe, managed to do without “childhood diseases” in this way, and after restyling in 2012, he became almost problem-free. The new generation is confidently expanding both in the primary and secondary markets. Price range - from 650,000 (2010 car) to 1,135,000 rubles. (year 2012). There are not too many offers; at the time of writing, 133 cars from 2009-2012 were sold in Moscow. On average, about 600 new crossovers were sold per year. Which clearly indicates that the owners are unwilling to “throw away” the car even in anticipation of updates, which the Koreans do quite often.

Off-roading is not its element, and it’s not worth torturing the Sorento like that...

CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM
The main problems with the car arose among those who somewhat overestimated the off-road capabilities of the Sorento, although the poetic name hinted at a certain softness rather than roughness of the road “songs” and at adventures along the way that were more romantic than brutal. In a word, it is clear that the most problems with new crossovers in the first years of production arose with the suspension and chassis. It was possible to get in to replace the support bearings of the front hubs not even after 50,000, but after 15,000 kilometers. But this run had to take place in such extreme conditions as, for example, that of the famous designer Artemy Lebedev, when the engine fell off of his “Moomusik” (Range Rover Vogue)... The suspension is completely independent: McPherson in front, multi-link in the rear. The rear one more often suffered from suspension diseases, and the front one mainly affected bearings, CV joints and other elements of the chassis. In a word, if you hear a knock from behind, you need to immediately inspect the shock absorbers - most likely they will need to be replaced. The Sorento suspension seems stiff to many, but in reality it is not the most energy-intensive and heavy loads force the shock absorbers to work in their full range. Replacing the rear ones will cost 3,200 rubles. a piece. You can replace the springs with softer ones, but with a progressive characteristic - 20,000 with installation. The front hub bearings are replaced as an assembly with the hub and, surprisingly, will cost only 5,500 rubles. It’s clear that the “bones” of stabilizers also fly: from 400 rubles, if you look for a non-original one. Some owners experienced a knocking sound in the steering wheel after the first serious cold weather. Replacing the power steering fluid helped. In general, the suspension and chassis last through the warranty period without any major complaints, and for careful drivers they last much longer.

BURN OR SQUEEZE?

The KIA Sorento R was equipped with two engines: a 2.4-liter gasoline and a 2.2-liter diesel (the Santa Fe New, by the way, also has a 3.5-liter V6). Although Russia has always been wary of diesel engines, the compression-ignition engine turned out to be only slightly less popular than the gasoline engine, despite the significant difference in price. For a turbodiesel you had to pay almost 80,000 extra! And if we throw another 60,000 on an automatic transmission, we get the recipe for the ideal Sorento - a diesel with an automatic transmission. And it’s not so much about efficiency, but about the weak dynamics of crossovers with a 2.4 engine. Moreover, if starting from a standstill is still quite tolerable, then the elasticity and acceleration dynamics at speeds above 60 km/h are upsetting. Especially for cars with manual transmission, the gears in which seem to be selected not for a heavy crossover, but for a small car.

A diesel engine develops a funny malfunction after three years of operation. In the area of the right front wheel there is a metallic knock... no, a grinding sound! After diagnosing the hubs, levers, balls and replacing half of the suspension, the sound, however, occurs again and again. Well, when suddenly the car loses its generator, power steering and the brake pedal “sticks,” it becomes clear that the belt drive is to blame. Specifically, the pulley on the crankshaft. The small rubber gasket that is there dries out under the influence of chemicals on the roads, and the pulley rotates. Replacement will cost 4,500 rubles. (pulley with gasket - 3500 and work - 1000), but the unforgettable sensations will remain for a lifetime. At the same time, diesel engines are generally as reliable as gasoline engines, and, what’s especially nice, they start easily in any frost if there is the “right” fuel in the tank.

Everything will fit. The luggage compartment is three-story and
in terms of volume - almost the leader in the class

SNAKE SKIN
Just like a snake periodically sheds its skin, your Sorento steering wheel can also become bald. The main dissatisfaction of KIA Sorento R owners is caused by finishing materials, durability paint coating body and plastic body kit. The body, in principle, is not the most rigid in the class. For example, on a hanging crossover, the fifth door may stop closing. When driving on uneven roads, you can hear creaking and crackling noises in the cabin, especially in the rear - near the second row of seats and the trunk curtain.

But the cargo compartment is the real pride of KIA in terms of capacity. It is divided into three levels, under the false floor there is a huge niche, under which there is another, technological one. In total, the trunk volume reaches 472 liters, which provided leadership in the class at the time of release. True, this only applies to 5-seater models; 7-seater models have no storage space, and behind the third row there is only room for a couple of bags. In Russia, four configuration options were offered. The most expensive version was equipped with full power accessories, navigation and automatic climate control. The only things that can disappoint are the old cards and the not very high-quality sound of the audio system. Failures of electrical equipment are not annoying, but there may be minor misunderstandings, such as a different tuning grid for the radio receiver of cars from the USA. But the instability of the paint of body panels and body parts is, alas, very typical. The second generation Sorento does not have any openly corrosive areas, but damage to the paintwork can become hotbeds for the spread of the “red plague”. And getting chips and scratches, as it turns out, is very easy. Body parts, however, are inexpensive - from 100 to 300 dollars, depending on the degree of eminence of the manufacturer and the completeness of the spare part. The rear bumper consists of two parts; the lower one is more often damaged; by the way, it is quite expensive - about 10,000 rubles. - and almost never found outside the original. In short, you need to be more careful when driving over rough terrain.

Numerical superiority.
Most engines on the aftermarket are gasoline

FACING THE ASPHALT

If the first generation Sorento could still do something on a fairly serious off-road, then the new generation can be called not off-road, but “all-weather”. Automatic all-wheel drive and ground clearance 185 mm, in principle, allows you to move carefully even on very rough roads, but it’s not worth the risk. And you need skill... Not only that geometric cross-country ability I’m not happy, because the drive coupling doesn’t provide enough force in difficult conditions. But there are also front-wheel drive Sorentos! Even the traction control system will not help here, no matter how much ESP you turn off. However, we must pay tribute to the KIA crossover: there are practically no breakdowns of the all-wheel drive clutch, and therefore it cannot be called helpless. It’s just important not to overestimate the capabilities of the car.

The KIA Sorento crossover is perfect for those who need, as they say, a lot four-wheel drive vehicle for little money. Since the brand at the time of the model’s release had not yet entered the category of prestigious ones, the prices for it are added up without taking into account the costs of reputation. Especially on the secondary market. Here you can find Sorento of Russian, Kazakh and American assembly. The vast majority are Russian (from Izhevsk and later from Kaliningrad). Since the assembly is “screwdriver”, we can say that all the Old World cars are Korean, which is good news. From the general recommendations, we can, as always, advise you to be extremely careful about the traces of an accident and possible body repairs so as not to encounter growing rust and cracks in the power elements of the body.

So, if everything is taken into account, feel free to drive - after all, old love does not grow old and does not rust. Therefore, it is never too late to return to Sorrento and return to Sorento.

Owner's opinion: Anton, KIA Sorento, gasoline 2.4, 2010.
I bought the car by chance at a very good price two years ago and I’m not going to change it, unless I come across the same diesel one. My Sorento is assembled in Kazakhstan, which can be identified by the VIN code, which begins with XWW. I have long dreamed of a big crossover, and this one fully meets my expectations. And by the way, it’s quite passable! My friends and I often go fishing on the Oka River, so my “Sorika” doesn’t give in even to the Pajero! Didn't do anything major official service refused immediately. I only changed Windshield- cracks started from a small stone. The expense is still disappointing. In the city, less than 16 liters is impossible. That's why I want a diesel...
