Hilux 8th generation. New Toyota Hilux vs old: guardian of heritage

On May 21, 2015, the legendary new generation pickup truck officially debuted in Bangkok Toyota Hilux.

The first generation of the model was released in 1968. Over the years, more than 16 million Hilux vehicles have been sold. This is one of the most popular Toyota models, which is sold in 180 countries. The currently presented generation is already the 8th, created taking into account the latest trends in ergonomics and design. The new Hilux is dynamic, refined and practical, offering great comfort and perfect for those who love to travel. The car interior has high-tech equipment and is finished with high-quality materials. This is an excellent SUV, not inferior in luxury to urban crossovers.

In order to offer their customers a truly functional pickup truck, the developers conducted extensive testing in real conditions. A team of testers traveled halfway around the world in a Toyota Hilux, evaluating the car in a wide variety of road and climate conditions. Thanks to the testing, as well as the large number of reviews received from the owners of the model, the developers were able to significantly improve the pickup.

Thus, a new frame and spring rear suspension were created for the Hilux 8, which increased comfort and safety while maintaining off-road performance, load capacity and strength.

The new generation of Toyota Hilux is equipped with a completely updated range of engines. These are D-4D turbocharged diesel engines. The first engine has a displacement of 2.4 liters and a power of 150 hp. (at 3400 rpm) and a torque of 400 Nm (at 1600-2000 rpm). The second is a 2.8-liter power unit with 177 hp. and a torque of 450 Nm. Both engines are paired with upgraded six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

“The Hilux is a symbol of durability, and we had to make it even more durable and at the same time give it new qualities modern car for active pastime, provide the level of comfort that drivers are looking for these days. We succeeded in achieving this goal,” says Rodrigo García De Paz, Senior Manager, Light Commercial Vehicles Group, Toyota Motor Europe, proudly.

In May two thousand and fifteen, a presentation of the new Toyota Hilux 2018-2019 (photo and price) took place in Thailand and Australia, which was transformed not only outside and inside, but also acquired many technical innovations.

Note that the 8th generation Toyota Hilux is one of the most popular pickup trucks in the world (including in Russian market) - over 47 years, more than sixteen million Hiluxes have been sold around the world (sales geography covers 180 countries, and the USA, with its love for pickup trucks, is not included in it).

The eighth generation of one of the most popular pickup trucks in the world, Toyota Hilux, officially debuted on May 21, 2015, simultaneously in Bangkok and Australia. The appearance of the new product has become more modern, but what is more important is that the technical component has undergone a thorough revision, from the frame to the power plants. If in Thailand sales of the car began on the day of the world premiere, then Australians will have to wait until October of this year, and Russians, most likely, until the spring of 2016.

The change of generation has had a positive effect on the appearance of the Hilux - the appearance of the car has become prettier and more modern, and in its style it is as close as possible to the cars of the Japanese brand. The designers were especially successful with the front part, which stands out for its narrow projector-type headlights with LED “garlands” (in the “top” versions, all the filling is based on diodes), a small radiator grille with chrome lining and a relief bumper with an air intake “mouth”.

The sides and rear part are designed more simply, although they are not without interesting details - large “rounded-square” wheel arches enclosing 16-18-inch wheel rims, stylish lights, a characteristic folding side and a neat bumper with “shiny” linings. In general, the pickup truck looks modern and interesting regardless of the type of cab (there are three in total - single, one and a half and double) and even in frankly working versions.

The length of the eighth generation Toyota Hilux in the Double Cab version is 5335 mm, height – 1820 mm, width – 1855 mm, wheelbase – 3085 mm. This means that it is 75mm longer and 20mm wider than its predecessor.

The maximum load, depending on the version, is 1240 kg, and the weight of the towed trailer can reach 3.5 tons, but provided that it is equipped with brakes.

The interior of the 8th generation Toyota Hilux evokes even more positive emotions than appearance. The front panel is designed in a minimalist, but at the same time elegant style, which is achieved through decorative metal elements.

The first thing that attracts attention is the 8-inch “tablet” of the multimedia complex in the center of the dashboard, which manages various functions. The climate control system is represented by rotary washers adjacent to large buttons and a separate display (in the basic versions, as before, there will be three “turns” for a simple air conditioner). The multifunctional steering wheel, made in the style of the latest models of the brand, fits well into the concept of the interior decoration, as does an expensive instrument cluster with a pair of main dials and an informative “display” in the middle.

The interior of the “eighth” Toyota Hilux is in every way reminiscent of passenger SUVs or crossovers and is distinguished not only by an increased level of comfort compared to its predecessor, but also by higher quality finishing materials, expressed by decent plastics, good leather and metal inserts.
The seats of the first row, in addition to a wide range of settings, have a competent profile with developed support on the sides. The rear sofa has a three-seater layout, and there is more than enough space on all fronts (compared to the 7th generation model, an additional 35 mm was carved out for the passengers’ legs).

Specifications. The 8th generation pickup truck is equipped with a line of two petrol and two diesel units, combined with 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions, rear-wheel drive or plug-in all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive transmission is equipped with a two-speed transfer case with a reduction gear and a rear differential lock and should serve as a good foundation for off-road use. By the way, most likely, only cars with diesel engines and four driving wheels will reach the Russian market.

  • The heavy fuel variants are four-cylinder GD series engines that feature the ESTEC (Economy and Thermally Efficient Combustion) concept. Both diesel engines are equipped with direct fuel supply Common Rail, exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head, variable geometry turbocharger and 32-bit controller. The “junior” unit with a volume of 2.4 liters produces 150 Horse power at 3400 rpm and 400 Nm of peak thrust at 1600-2000 rpm, the volume of the “senior” is 2.8 liters, and the potential is 177 “horses” at 3400 rpm and 450 Nm of torque at 1600-2400 rpm.
  • The gasoline part migrated to the 8th generation Toyota Hilux from its predecessor without any major changes. The basic versions sport a 2.7-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with direct injection, producing 166 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 246 Nm of thrust at 3800 rpm. More productive cars are equipped with a 4.0-liter V-shaped six with a power of 278 horsepower, which develops a maximum of 376 Nm of torque at 3700 rpm. Regarding the characteristics of dynamics, speed and fuel efficiency, then the Japanese automaker has not announced them at the moment.

The Eighth Hilux is built on a modernized seventh-generation pickup platform, which makes it boast a more rigid steel frame and improved chassis. The car is equipped with an independent double wishbone suspension with stabilizer lateral stability front and a spring design with two shock absorbers on each side at the rear.
For the “truck” there are three settings for shock absorbers and elastic elements: Standard – for all types of roads, Comfort – for asphalt, Heavy duty – for heavy loads.
Integrated into the steering structure hydraulic booster. The front wheels are equipped with ventilated brake discs, the rear wheels are equipped with drum brakes, and an anti-lock braking system is available on all versions.

Options and prices. In July 2015, pre-orders for the eighth generation Toyota Hilux began in Russia. The pickup truck is offered in three trim levels - “Standard”, “Comfort” and “Prestige”. As expected - only with diesel power units (the younger one with a “mechanics”, the older one with an “automatic”). The cost of the 8th generation Toyota Hilux in 2015 on the Russian market starts at 1 million 499 thousand rubles.

The eighth generation of the Japanese pickup truck debuted in the spring of 2015 in Thailand and Australia. The new generation of the car received a more modern appearance, high-quality interior trim and improved technical part. And already in the fall of 2017, the updated Toyota Hilux 2018-2019 model year was presented in Thailand. During the restyling, experts slightly adjusted the car’s exterior and also offered new equipment called Rocco.

The first generation of this Japanese pickup truck was introduced back in 1968. The model has been in production for almost 50 years. During this period, the company was able to sell over 12 million of these cars, and the car is sold in 180 countries around the world. These pickups can be seen in Russia, America and South Africa.

Improved appearance and Rocco version

The new Toyota Hilux 8 2018-2019 is still the same reliable and durable pickup truck with high levels of comfort and high-quality sound insulation of the interior. The key differences of the restyled Toyota Hilux are: a trapezoidal radiator grille (now it resembles the grille of the overseas brother of the Toyota Tacoma), a modernized front bumper and foglights of a new design with chrome inserts.

New Toyota equipment Hilux Rocco received additional pads on the wheel arches in black, 18-inch alloy wheels, all-terrain tires, as well as a radiator grille and rear bumper painted black (chrome is used in the base). The sides of the cargo platform of such a pickup truck have special designs indicating the version. Another difference between the Toyota Hilux Rocco pickup truck is the maximum set of equipment.

The Hilux now resembles the aforementioned Tacoma quite closely.

The profile of the car body looks quite standard for pickups, but the developers have done everything possible to ideally place accents: compact exterior mirror housings with integrated turn signal repeaters, massive arch stampings, stylish door panels. The rear of the updated Toyota Hilux is equipped with modern optics, a tailgate with a large chrome handle, and an additional LED brake light.

The new product is available in three cabin options:

  • single;
  • one and a half;
  • double

Overall dimensions of Toyota Hilux 2018-2019 (double cabin):

This was achieved through the use of thinner seat backs for the driver and front passenger.

The car's equipment includes a modern infotainment system with touch display 8-inch diagonal (audio system, navigator, telephone, rear-view camera), instrument panel with built-in multifunction display, climate control divided into two zones, hill start assistant, stabilization system, as well as seven airbags.
