Positioning

The line from Nokia is small, simple and logical. The lower the number, the cheaper the device. The higher, the more expensive and more interesting the filling. Some models can be conditionally called paired, such as Nokia 5 and 6, since they are close in cost. But if the first is a model with a 5.2-inch display, then the second offers a larger screen – 5.5 inches.

For Chinese manufacturers, which is what HMD Global is, despite all attempts to use a brand leased for 10 years and pretend to be a purebred Finn, the segment of devices with a diagonal of 5.5 inches is one of the most important. Here you can see a number of popular models, for example, from Xiaomi, Meizu, Huawei under the Honor brand. These are devices that offer an excellent price/quality ratio and, due to this, outperform A-brands, for example, Samsung.

HMD Global's positioning is somewhat confused in relation to the market. In the eyes of the manufacturer, the Nokia brand is already a sufficient reason for a person to pay more for a device; the premium, depending on the model, ranges from 15 to 25%, this is a markup for the brand’s popularity in the past. That is, the company does not rely on those characteristics that are accepted in the segment and that are offered by competitors. HMD Global is playing the old game - trying to create a catchy look and save on components in order to achieve high profitability for themselves. For a newcomer to the market, this strategy is understandable, but for the consumer it means purchasing devices with characteristics that are far from optimal at full price. For example, in Nokia 6, the manufacturer saved on the chipset and installed Qualcomm Snapdragon 430, which can safely be called occupying a place between the budget and mid-range segments. For example, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X has Snapdragon 625, which is a cut above, has better performance, and less load on the battery.

In Russia, sales of Nokia 6 have not become a noticeable phenomenon in its segment; this device is in moderate demand, it is a “difficult” position, it is difficult to sell. Too many competitors, too few advantages in terms of filling, but an interesting design.

Design, dimensions, control elements

For Nokia 6, HMD Global used a design that was popular several years ago: a metal frame, where the side edges are straight, with marks on the edges to see the texture of the metal. There are several color options, but the option with a glossy case is only available for the 4/64 GB model, which is called Arte Black. The device is not officially supplied to Russia; in the picture its back is turned towards you.

All other color options are very similar: dark matte body, bright metal marks on the side edge, black screen with 2.5D glass. It’s up to you to decide which color to choose, but in real life the difference is practically invisible; we’re talking about shades rather than bright, noticeable colors. Apparently, they tried to make the model universal.

The back panel of the device is made of metal, antenna inserts are visible. As for me, the device turned out to be heavy, although the weight is only 169 grams, which is typical for such models. The feeling of heaviness arises due to the fact that the body is rectangular, wide, and cuts into the hand. No particular thought was given to the ergonomics of the device; for example, the fingerprint sensor was moved to the bottom edge of the body, so you have to reach for it with your thumb. On the go, this can lead to the risk of you dropping the device; balancing the body is simply inconvenient. Therefore, you should carefully press the sensor and hold your smartphone tightly. And it’s important to say that I have big hands, but what about those with smaller hands? The answer is obvious - be careful with the device.

The dimensions of the smartphone are 154x75.8x7.85 mm, there is also a protruding camera bezel (8.4 mm), it does not interfere at all, and does not touch anything in your pocket, even when you take out the device. But the width plus the shape of the body make the smartphone not very convenient. Perhaps for me this is one of the biggest complaints about the model.

On the left side there is a slot for nanoSIM cards, it is combined (instead of the second card you can install a microSD card). On the right side there is a paired volume key, as well as an on/off button. At the top end there is a 3.5 mm jack, at the bottom end there is a microphone, speaker, and a microUSB connector. Why did HMD decide not to install USB Type C in a fairly recent model? Saving on matches, we thought that such a connector would be quite appropriate in 2017. They are not alone in this, so there is no point in scolding the Chinese for this.

The LED indicator has been removed from the device. It is surprising that it is present in the model for the Chinese market. It is not clear to me what the deep meaning of such a change in the apparatus is. Many people love such indicators, especially since in this device it would be appropriate in the absence of screen operating modes, when you can see missed notifications.

The smartphone does not have any protection against water, which is also typical for Chinese manufacturers and does not raise any questions. The touch keys on the sides of the fingerprint sensor are backlit and cannot be reassigned.

The device is well assembled, there are no complaints about it, but when it was created, no one thought about conducting any tests on how it would work in real life. For example, NFC was placed behind a metal plate, which led to the fact that with Nokia 6 you have to dance with a tambourine in order to pay for something using Android Pay - freeze with the device at the terminal, touch it closely, which is inconvenient and annoying. This is a miscalculation of the Chinese who designed the device; they have little experience working with NFC, and that’s why such “childish” errors appear.

Display

The screen characteristics are as follows: 5.5 inches, IPS, 1920x1080 pixels, 403 ppi, brightness up to 450 nits, Corning Gorilla Glass. In automatic mode, for some reason, the device was not added the ability to independently raise the brightness on the street; to do this, you need to go into the menu and enable the appropriate setting (it was added to the firmware obviously later, since the menu item was not even translated).

But if we talk about the properties of the screen, then it is not outstanding; outdoors it is dim even in not very bright sunlight (the same as in Nokia 5). Indoors, the brightness is sufficient, but the colors are not too expressive or vibrant. An ordinary screen for everyday use, without any claims to anything special. There are no additional screen settings to suit yourself and your ideas about beauty - everything is very ascetic.

Battery

Built-in Li-Ion battery capacity 3000 mAh. Unfortunately, HMD Global does not even indicate approximate operating modes and the expected time in each of them with a fully charged battery. Therefore, we can only focus on the results that we obtained in practice. So, at maximum brightness, playing unconverted HD video in MX Player will give approximately 7 hours of work. This is a good result for an IPS matrix; there are no records, but there are no failures either.

When using the device for calls for an hour, browsing the web, communicating in instant messengers and in social networks it is enough for one day of light. In this case, the screen backlight was set to 60%; with automatic backlight adjustment, the operating time did not change much. Total time The screen operation time was about 2.5 hours, the volume of transferred data was about 400 MB.

The battery charging time using standard charging (fast charging is not supported, wireless is also not supported) is about 3.5-4 hours. I couldn’t find out why the difference in charging time occurs, but this half hour is apparently due to the fact that the device can synchronize some data and therefore charges more slowly, as energy is consumed.

Thrifty users who use the device from time to time and do not actively use data transfer can achieve work in 1.5-2 days, but better results are no longer possible. In standby mode (without a SIM card), with data transfer disabled, the device quickly loses charge, I accidentally noticed this. Therefore, it is better to turn it off if you do not use it.

In gaming mode, the device discharges quickly, it will last for 3.5-4 hours at most.

There are no special power saving settings, only the one that is present as standard in Android and can be activated when the charge reaches 15%. In a word, this device is quite superior in this aspect.

Chipset, memory, memory cards, performance

Typically, Chinese companies offer a choice of the amount of internal memory (both RAM and regular), but HMD Global for Russia presented one version of the device with 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal memory, plus a 128 GB memory card. For the average consumer, this is enough for the eyes.

Snapdragon chipset 430, it has 8 cores and fairly decent performance, as can be seen in synthetic tests. I would like to see updated 400-series chipsets in this device, but it was designed a long time ago, hence the choice of this solution. In synthetic tests you can see the following results:

As for me, this device is not the fastest in its class, including in the interface, despite the fact that there are no shells here. Odnoklassniki from Huawei, Meizu, Xiaomi are faster, although this is not critical, but the difference is still there.

Communication capabilities

A budget solution, and that says it all, there is no USB Type C (it’s a few pennies more expensive), a regular microUSB, but it’s good that they left OTG. There is no second band for Wi-Fi, which immediately makes you a hostage good internet and absent neighbors transmitting a lot of data on their Wi-Fi networks.

NFC is supported, including for Android Pay. It works poorly, since the case shields the chip, I wrote about this above.

The device supports LTE Cat.4 and the following bands: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38, 40. The implementation of frequency support is very frivolous, there is no aggregation, which is understandable, but there is also no reliable operation at the declared frequencies in other countries. For example, my Nokia 5 in the USA refused to work in the AT&T LTE network (although it regularly received SMS messages when rebooting, that is, it clung to the network and then fell off). For those who travel to other countries, this can become a serious pitfall; it is impossible to check the performance of the device in other countries in advance.

Cameras

The front camera is 8-megapixel and does not offer any special image quality; it does have autofocus. For a device of this price, this is to be expected.

The main camera interface is simple, but there are additional and interesting settings hidden here. For example, you can activate the “Retouching” mode (in fact, blurring the skin is the main application of this mode). You can turn on the electronic compass, then it will be displayed on the screen while shooting. There is also a lighting detection mode, when the exposure is processed automatically, it works normally, plus or minus. You can set up watermarks, and then they will appear on every photo you take.

The resolution of the main camera is 16 megapixels (f/2.0), it has a two-section flash and autofocus. The time it takes to focus on an object is insignificant; I can’t say that the camera is fast, but it processes the scene in an acceptable time. The HDR mode doesn't work very well and turns off automatically when the flash is on.

Several reviews of this device praise it for its very high-quality camera, but it didn’t seem like it to me either in the first or second approximation. Regular camera for this kind of product, in the sun it produces more or less digestible images, but at night it takes very bad pictures. However, look at the examples of photos and videos and evaluate the quality of the camera yourself.

Software

The model was released on Android 7.1.1, almost all interface elements are similar to those we see in Android 7. I will not describe the standard Android functions, you can read about them in a detailed review.

Localization of the device is done well, but in some places where new functions were added, there are scraps English terms. For example, you can see an English menu item in the “Display” section. Such flaws occur, but they do not spoil the impression of the device; it is clear what this or that item means.

The built-in FM radio is normal, nothing special here.

The device's multimedia capabilities are modest, and the included headphones are of disgusting quality. It’s a shame to put something like this in a box, it spoils the impression - it’s better without headphones than with something like China.

There is support for Dolby Atmos, you can enable it in the Play Music settings.

There is no additional software as such, it is pure Android (moreover, Google actively supports Foxconn in this, and many updates arrive here first). All security updates arrive on time and quickly enough. Pure Android is not convenient in everything and is not convenient for everyone, but there is a small layer of those who consider this a plus.

Impression

There are no complaints about the quality of the connection, the call is quite loud, you can skip the vibration. In Moscow and Russia there are no problems with working in 4G, but in other countries the device does not see all LTE frequencies, although it has them (exactly the same problem in Nokia 5). It works on 4G, albeit slowly.

The quality of speech transmission has nothing in common with the previous Nokia, although in Nokia 8 they tried to restore this and installed several microphones and an advanced noise reduction system, but this is simply not there (the second microphone only works when recording video).

The price of Nokia 6 is 15,990 rubles (3/32 GB), which makes the device unbalanced, especially compared to its competitors.

A direct competitor to the Nokia 6 can be the Meizu M5 Note; it also has a metal body, a fingerprint sensor on the front panel, a similar screen, but a processor from MediaTek, which is rather an advantage here, since it is higher class. 4000 mAh battery, fast charging, cameras are comparable.

With a price of 14,990 rubles, it is also cheaper, which makes the device more interesting in the eyes of a potential buyer.

Quite interesting due to the dual camera Honor 6X, the model came out a long time ago, but is in demand, and the price is in the range of 12-15 thousand rubles, which is also cheaper than the offer from Nokia. It is possible that this device is inferior in aesthetics to the Nokia 6, but it is noticeably more comfortable in the hands and has better other characteristics.

I won’t talk about Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X, this is an outgoing model, but it is also in high demand. And among those listed, I mentioned only noticeable devices; this is the tip of the iceberg. There are dozens of real competitors to the Nokia 6, and compared to them, the device from HMD doesn’t look the best - it’s expensive, doesn’t have any distinctive features in its hardware, and is somewhat boring. A slow camera, lack of fast charging, not to mention wireless, and many other “little things” make us believe that the real price of the device is at least 20% too high.

Fans of the Finnish brand Nokia have been waiting for a long time for the return of their favorite electronics manufacturer to the market. This became possible only after HMD Global took up the matter. Several models entered the market at once. Among them, a special place was occupied by a confident middle peasant with excellent technical characteristics, the signature design and affordable price of the Nokia 6 smartphone, a review of the new product will help you understand what advantages and disadvantages are hidden under its stylish body.

If you believe the expression “choose by clothes,” then Nokia 6 has every chance of becoming a very popular and in-demand device. The matte all-metal body is pleasing to the eye and very pleasant to the touch. If from the front side it is difficult to immediately determine whether a smartphone belongs to the legendary brand, then from the design back cover he becomes recognizable. Thanks to the special location of the camera and flash, there is a vertical module that protrudes slightly above the general surface.

The logo is printed on the front of the smartphone. The fact that the inscription is shifted looks fresh and original. The only drawback of the front side is the rather wide frames around the display. But the touch button, beautiful in shape and appearance, smoothes out the impression of bulkiness.

Design and ergonomics

The Nokia 6 has no complaints about the design and placement of buttons. Below the display is a home button, a fingerprint scanner, and two sub-screen buttons. They are also sensory. When turned off, the buttons are not highlighted in any way; when turned on, they are softly illuminated.

The bottom end is standard, it houses a speaker and a MicroUSB input. The audio jack is located on top. On the right is the power button. A little higher are the so-called “rockers” - the volume button. It is difficult to palpate blindly, and also has a rather tight movement. On the left is a slot in which you can place two nano-sized SIM cards, or one memory card and one nano SIM. Nokia 6 reviews indicate that the ergonomics of the device leave much to be desired. Controlling with one hand is difficult, adjusting the volume also causes some inconvenience. But for standard everyday use, the device meets all the requirements.

Display

First the general characteristics:

  • diagonal size 5.5”;
  • resolution indicator 1920 x 1080;
  • point density indicator 401 ppi;
  • IPS LCD matrix.

Overall, the quality of the display leaves a positive impression. But we can’t help but note one strange phenomenon: when turned off, at an angle, the screen gives off an unpleasant purple color.

If we talk about the image, then there is a slight shift to blue-green tones. This can easily be fixed if you adjust the color rendering through the settings, adding yellow by the required amount. If you set the brightness to maximum, then in dim lighting or artificial light it starts to hurt your eyes. Outdoors in bright sunshine, this makes it possible to clearly distinguish all the details on the display. This is ensured by 24-bit color depth. The screen is capable of transmitting more than 16 million colors.

The screen sensor is very sensitive. Capacitive type. This display is characterized by excellent durability. The service life under standard operating conditions can last for decades. The screen is protected by Gorila Glass 3 glass. The display has a 2.5D curve.

The Nokia 6 screen is equipped with rotation sensors, which helps you view photos or watch videos without any problems. The proximity sensor is also very useful feature. During a conversation, when a person brings the device to his ear, the display turns off. This not only saves battery power, but also prevents accidental exposure to the sensor.

Equipment

Nokia 6 review shows that the manufacturer presents its product very solidly. A beautiful box makes an impression and inspires confidence that it contains a truly worthy thing. When you open the package, you don't feel disappointed. All components are divided into bags:

  • microUSB cable;
  • charging device 5V, 2A;
  • wired headphones;
  • a paperclip for removing a SIM card;
  • instructions and documentation.

The language of the instructions depends on the place of purchase, otherwise the package can be called standard.

Performance

Performance was not called the biggest advantage since the device was released. In this regard, Nokia 6's competitors have left it behind (if we talk about smartphones in the same price category). You should not hope that the gadget can be used as a gaming device. But if you need a reliable device for everyday tasks, then Nokia 6 is it. The softness of the shell is ensured by an eight-core processor. Applications open quickly. You can still play on your smartphone, but without choosing games on high level graphics.

Users note high performance and ease of working with several tasks at once. The built-in memory has a capacity of 64 GB, but the user has access to only 52 of them. This is quite enough for everyday tasks. If you start to run out of memory, you can always expand it using microSD. The maximum capacity of an additional memory card should not exceed 128 GB.

The Nokia 6 test results showed the following parameters:

  • Geekbench 4 (chip testing) - 2,912 points;
  • Ice Storm Unlimited from 3DMark (graphics test) - 9,541 points;
  • AnTuTu 6 (mixed testing) - 47,279 points.

Cameras

The main camera of Nokia 6 is equipped with a dual photodiode flash. This makes it possible to take fairly high-quality photos with minimal energy use. CMOS camera sensor. And although the type of matrix for mobile device cameras is not as important as for full-fledged photo and video equipment, this type of matrix is considered optimal for use in smartphones in this price category. The f/2 beam lets in enough light to produce decent quality images in low light conditions.

Camera settings work in both automatic and manual mode. For example, the flash, brightness, and illumination can be adjusted independently. Automated processes include the following: autofocus and phase focus improve the clarity of moving objects, the viewfinder and face detector make it possible to build the most correct composition, and autoexposure will determine the time and shutter speed for the perfect picture. The panoramic and continuous photography functions make it possible to take many photos of Nokia 6 in a certain period of time. In the first case, a panorama is created from these frames, in the second, a series of images.

Front – 8 MP CMOS BSI matrix type. The camera is designed for video recording with Ultra HD, Full HD image resolution formats.

Photo

The Nokia 6 smartphone is equipped with two pretty good cameras: 16 and 8 megapixels. The pictures are of high quality in terms of clarity and brightness. You can take photographs in natural or artificial light, but also in the dark. There are rarely any gaps when shooting, even if the photos are taken in bright sun.

Users' opinions were divided regarding brightness contrast. Some believe that the photos are reliable, that is, natural colors and shades are conveyed in daylight. Others claim that the pictures are dim and blurry, but this depends more on the quality of the image processing by the program rather than on the characteristics of the cameras themselves.

But it is definitely worth noting the good detail, which is lost when the shooting light conditions deteriorate. But the picture remains quite clear, the photo does not turn into continuous noise.

Video

You shouldn’t expect super-quality videos from smartphone cameras in the mid-price segment. Support for major formats allows you to view videos using different devices. When shooting video, you can use settings that help improve quality.

Sound and music playback quality

The characteristics of Nokia 6, which determine the sound quality, made it possible for this model to outperform competitors even from a higher price category. The total power of the speakers operating in stereo mode is 8 db. The speakers, supplemented with the TFA-9891 amplifier, produce excellent sound. Even bugged low frequencies. The smartphone's sound supply is excellent for listening to music and watching movies.

The gadget's hardware sounds can be set at a fairly high volume. User experiments have shown that even in very smart environments, the volume allows you to easily hear the call sound.

The smartphone supports the following audio formats: AMR, AMR-NB, FLAC, MIDI, MP3 (MPEG-1/2/2.5 Layer 3, .mp3), OGG, WMA, WAV.

The device allows you to make recordings using a voice recorder and leave voice notes.

Communication capabilities

The range of communication capabilities of the Nokia 6 can safely be called solid. The hybrid card slot has already been discussed above. In addition, the manufacturer offers the following functions:

  • bluetooth 4.1 LE;
  • GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS;
  • Wi-Fi Dual Band with Wi-Fi Direct;
  • FM radio;
  • USB On-The-Go;
  • accelerometer
  • compass.

The manufacturer claims to have NFC, short-range communication capabilities. But as practice shows, not all devices are equipped with this addition.

There may be problems with the phone's operation in other countries. Reviews suggest that those who frequently travel abroad should consider purchasing a different smartphone. The Nokia 6 tries to pick up a network like AT&T's LTE, but its communications capabilities aren't enough to hold onto it.

operating system

Nokia 6 is the first smartphone from the Finnish brand to be released on the Android operating system. The manufacturer chose version 7.0 to return to the light. The OS is not overloaded with software; the choice of add-ons is left to the user. One Support application has been added to help the user. It was created for direct communication with support.

Otherwise everything is standard. The interface is convenient, beautiful, carefully thought out. Android manufacturers, Google, are generally famous for their desire to create colorful pictures. In this new OS, their fussing about interface design calmed down a bit, so the product turned out to be harmonious and concise.

The desktop and application menu are well known to all users of smartphones running this OS. The lock screen has been improved somewhat in this version. It became possible to choose a separate theme for it, not the same as on the desktop. The quality of the animation has improved, and the notification line now does not have to be opened from the top line of the screen, but simply swipe it from top to bottom anywhere. Nokia 6 is equipped with a fingerprint scanner, which is built into the home button. Some users claim that it is a little narrow, but it seems that this is just nitpicking. There is an alternative unlocking method, which the device offers to use after 5 unsuccessful attempts to scan the fingerprint.

The smartphone copes well with multiple tasks simultaneously, which is ensured by its RAM; working in multi-window mode is also not inconvenient. The settings menu is intuitive even for those who have never encountered Android and for whom Nokia 6 was the first smartphone.

Autonomy

The battery capacity of this model is 11.4 Wh or 3000 mAh. Although looking at the rather massive body, one would like to expect more. The autonomous operation of the device will not evoke any special feelings in the user. It can withstand the whole day under standard load, so it won’t get rid of the habit of charging the device in the evening for Nokia 6.

When it comes to energy saving, Nokia 6 can be called an interesting device. It adjusts the screen layout not depending on the lighting, but on what picture is currently on the screen. This function cannot be changed. Perhaps the manufacturers thus wanted to save a little energy by extending the smartphone's operating session. And they succeeded, with Wi-Fi turned on and auto-update, watching video in HD quality lasts 13 hours, but the picture is quite dim, which, in general, does not interfere with a full movie viewing.

Charging is carried out via a microUSB port. From the original device and cord, the battery is completely filled with charge in 2.5 hours. Moreover, this process is uniform; you should not expect that the battery will be half charged in 20 minutes. A non-native charger slows down the charging process significantly.

Pros and cons of a smartphone

Summarizing this, we can highlight both the advantages of this smartphone and its disadvantages. Let's start with the pleasant things. The logo of the legendary brand on the case is in itself an advantage. Nokia is a guarantee of quality, which is reflected in this device.

Whether design and ergonomics is a debatable issue. But the build quality appearance and the materials used are what the Finnish brand has always been famous for.

TO positive characteristics you can safely include the camera as well. Good quality pictures and videos. Additional features expand capabilities and automate the process. For professional photography, the quality is, of course, far from good, but for everyday use and selfies it is absolutely enough.

The advantages of Nokia 6 include the operating system. The manufacturer deliberately did not overload it, so there is enough space for all user programs. In addition, the OS is constantly updated, which is good news.

The sound can also be considered an advantage. Pure, deep, good quality The headset makes it possible to hear every note. The frequencies do not fall through, do not go up or down.

Speaking of shortcomings, we can only highlight weak performance. After analyzing several reviews of Nokia 6, we can conclude that there is no clear opinion about the pros and cons of this model. There are only subjective criteria for evaluating authors who don’t like the design, the scanner is too narrow, or the frames are too wide.

Comparison with competitors

If we make a comparison, Nokia 6 cannot be called a leader in its price segment. Many companies have released worthy devices that give a head start to the product of the famous brand. Xiomi has raised the bar with its budget models, so now many smartphones are compared with these Chinese ones. In this aspect, Nokia loses to them in many ways, but not in everything. The camera and body of the Finn are definitely better, as is the amount of built-in memory.

Conclusions and feedback

Overall, the Nokia 6 turned out to be very good. Nokia managed to maintain its corporate identity both in the design and in the contents of the smartphone. But the fact is that this price segment is crowded, and the brand managed to stand out among a number of similar devices only by its name. It didn’t surprise anyone, it didn’t defeat its competitors, it didn’t win over its users. But let's hope this was just the beginning. That in its first device in a series of Android smartphones, the company did not want to give up all its trump cards. Most likely, they saved a couple of pleasant surprises for their flagships, and this device is just testing the market. Although it was received warmly by fans of the brand.

Nokia 6 is a mid-class smartphone with a proprietary design, high performance, pure Android and regular updates, priced from $180 (RUR 10,500).

Can a resurgent Nokia make its way in a market crowded with affordable smartphones?

The Nokia 6 has a much sleeker design than most of its competitors. The phone is milled from a single piece of aluminum, the unibody body is combined with Corning Gorilla Glass, the edges are rounded, the profile is thin, and the proprietary form factor is preserved. Even BlackBerry and iPhone fans will like the all-black phone.

On the front panel there is a selfie camera, a fingerprint scanner, touch buttons and a Nokia mark, all built-in sensors are hidden.

The polished edges of this Nokia phone cast a bright reflection when held in the sun. The right side of the case houses the power/lock button and dual volume rocker - both are made of black metal with silver accents, like the case. The keys are easy to reach if you hold the phone with one hand, and they click pleasantly when pressed.

Module rear camera not too convex, although on a flat surface the back of the phone will still rest on it. There is no protection against water ingress here.

Nokia 6 is available in several color options: Arte Black, Matte Black, Tempered Blue, Silver and Copper - all of them look good.

Interface and functionality

operating system Android in Nokia 6 is free of unnecessary software and retains the original interface. Only the Support app has been added, providing direct communication with support - the same feature is also available on the Google Pixel.

To help the user there are instructions, warranty, FAQ, forum and Nokia community chat. Regular software updates are promised.

Processor and performance

The system does not freeze, although there is a slight lag when navigating the interface. The 1.4 GHz octa-core Snapdragon 430 processor and 3 GB of RAM provide average but stable performance in the Nokia 6.

Switching between applications is smooth, loading takes 1-2 seconds. When working with large applications or in dual-screen mode, the smartphone begins to freeze constantly.

This is sufficient for everyday use, although a more powerful processor would speed up loading times and improve frame rates in games.

The fingerprint scanner built into the Home button quickly and accurately recognizes the owner. The scanner is narrow, so it does not always detect the fingerprint the first time. You have to press the button twice: once to “wake you up”, the second time for the scanner to recognize you.

Communication support

The quality of communication in Nokia 6 is good, the interlocutor will clearly hear the owner of the phone. The two speakers with Dolby Atmos technology produce decent sound, although I was hoping for more volume.

NFC support allows you to use a number of services, including Android Pay and Beam; many competitors do not have this technology. There is a microUSB connector for charging.

The 16-megapixel camera app has few controls—you can't adjust white balance, ISO level, or other settings. There is only a timer, flash, video recording, HDR mode and switching to the front camera. When Nokia released Windows Phone-based smartphones, applications were much more feature-rich.

In normal lighting, indoors, excellent pictures are obtained, but the sensor is too sensitive to movement - because of this, the image is blurred. Outdoors, colors will remain rich and accurate, but skies and bright objects will struggle due to overexposure. Detail is reduced due to insufficient dynamic range. This may be fixed with updates.

The auto-HDR mode of the Nokia 6 camera is too passive and does not always turn on in scenes where it would be appropriate. To get detailed and balanced photos, you should leave it on all the time - but then you have to wait about three seconds before each shot. The sensor captures light well, which is especially useful in low light. The flash illuminates the subjects sufficiently while darkening the background.

When shooting video in 1080p format, high color quality and detail are preserved even if you zoom in. Nokia does not have video stabilization, so picture twitching will be noticeable. The focusing system sometimes loses the subject, but quickly automatically finds it and continues tracking. Video can be shot at a variety of speeds, including 3x, 2x, 1/2 and 1/3. For Slow-mo you will need to reduce the resolution to at least 720p.

Battery endurance

The Nokia 6 battery with a capacity of 3000 mAh is enough for most users to last a whole day without recharging, however, under intense load it will run out faster. A full charge takes less than 3 hours, indicating high energy efficiency.

Bottom line

Nokia 6 is one of the best modern smartphones from Nokia. Pleasant tactile sensations, an excellent screen and a 16-megapixel camera sensor create the impression of premium quality, but the lack of performance proves that the Nokia 6 belongs to the mid-range devices.

The iPhone SE is much faster, the Moto G5 Plus has similar specifications, but the shooting quality is worse. Honor 6X boasts a powerful processor and dual camera. All these four smartphones their strengths and weak sides, although Android fans should already think about returning to the Nokia brand and wait for software fixes.

Nokia 6 benefits

  • Vivid and detailed image
  • Good photos in any lighting
  • High build quality
  • Dual Dolby Atmos speakers
  • Quickly switch between applications
  • Pure Android
  • Accurate fingerprint scanner

We offer a review of Nokia 6, prepared based on materials from GSMArena. The conclusions of the experts of the authoritative resource were preserved and supplemented by comments from the Five-Inches editors.

A brand that ten years ago was the undisputed leader in the market mobile phones, is returning after many years of decline and oblivion. Cooperation with Microsoft did not go well, but it is in the past. HMD Global has started new round Nokia's evolution on a positive note - on January 19, 2017 in China, all of them were sold in just 60 seconds, and this despite the fact that buyers had to pre-order on a paid basis.

The new Nokia 6 is expected to hit the global market in the near future. There will be minor differences from the version for China - 3/32 GB configuration will be added, Nokia 6 will be controlled by updated Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Before the world debut of the Finnish-Chinese new product, we offer detailed review technical characteristics and real capabilities of the smartphone.

In the first part of the Nokia 6 review we talk about:

  • Battery and operating time on a single charge in different modes.
  • Display test results - brightness, black depth, contrast and color reproduction.
  • Nokia 6 phone camera and photo quality.
  • Sound quality in headphones.

Nokia 6 battery: operating time in various modes

Battery capacity of the new Nokia 6 total 3000 mAh. For a smartphone with a diagonal of 5.5 inches and not a new one, which is produced using 28 nm technology, such a battery capacity seems almost a death sentence. But testing in various operating modes refutes pessimistic forecasts - Nokia 6 is able to survive an eventful day.

Autonomy rating75 hours

In talk mode, the Nokia 6's operating time exceeds 22 hours. When watching videos and surfing the web, the phone is predictably inferior to the leaders in the autonomy rating, but still shows good results - about 10 hours of screen activity today it is considered the norm not only for state employees, but also for flagships.

For readers for whom smartphone autonomy is one of the key selection criteria, Five-Inches recommends paying attention to. A review of Redmi Note 4 has been published on the website, and this particular smartphone can be considered the record holder for operating time on a single charge.

Nokia 6 display: characteristics and test results

The new Nokia 6 has an IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. With a diagonal of 5.5 inches, this gives a pixel density of around 400. In terms of dry characteristics, the display is good - it meets the standards of the budget and mid-price segment.

The results of testing the Nokia 6 display add points - the image quality can be considered an asset for the phone. We note the high brightness and contrast by IPS standards. The black color is really black, although we see problems with color reproduction that are typical for modern smartphones.

With default settings, the color gamut of the new Nokia 6's display falls into the blue part of the spectrum, although the average color accuracy factor (DeltaE) is quite good - 5.3. To correct the situation, just turn on the warm screen mode; DeltaE drops to an acceptable 3.3. There is also a cool mode, but in this case the image will have a strong blue cast, and the color accuracy factor will increase to 7.5 (the lower the better).

If picture quality is of fundamental importance, you can take a closer look - it produces amazing contrast with deep blacks and high brightness. The situation with color reproduction is the same as in Nokia 6. As for readability in the sun, the display of Nokia 6 is in the top half of the rating and does not cause any complaints.

Readability in the sun

Nokia 6 camera

Nokia 6 camera resolution is 16 MP, but physical size pixels leave much to be desired (1 micron). Auto focus phase, aperture 2.0, there is panoramic shooting and HDR. Of course, there is no optical stabilization. The front camera has a similar aperture with a resolution of 8 megapixels and a slightly larger pixel size.

The Nokia 6 smartphone takes so-so photographs... the detail is good, but there are shortcomings, and there are many of them. GSMArena experts noted a loss of sharpness at the edges of the frame, low contrast and slightly muted colors. In poor lighting there is too much noise. Examples are in front of you, and 100% crop can be found at the link.

The Nokia 6 camera can record videos at Full HD @ 30fps. If you want to shoot video with increased frequency frame, you will have to reduce the resolution to 720p or 480p. The video quality is very good - excellent detail, realistic picture, although the colors could be more saturated.

Nokia 6: sound quality in headphones

Few people expect from budget phones High Quality sound, and completely in vain. Tests show that some inexpensive models are not only not inferior to, but even ahead of other flagships in terms of noise level and other measurable sound parameters.

So Nokia 6 can join the ranks of inexpensive smartphones for audiophiles. There are a pair of speakers for stereo sound with Dolby Atmos support, but more importantly, intermodulation and harmonic distortion are minimal, both when connecting an external amplifier and in the headset. Moreover, headphones reduce fluctuations in signal amplification at different frequencies and expand the dynamic range.

ZTE Axon 7 (headphones)+0.03, -0.11 -92.3 92.3 0.0011 0.012

Nokia 6 sounds a little worse, at least according to testing results. An excellent result, since Axon 7 in 2017 was included in almost all ratings, and in many even took second place.

First results

The picture on the display and the sound in the headphones are the obvious advantages of the new Nokia 6. The operating time of the Nokia 6 on a single charge is higher than one would expect from a phone with an old 5.5-diagonal processor and a 3000 mAh battery. The main drawback at this stage of testing is the camera, which lacks color saturation, contrast and clarity at the edges of the frame.

We are talking about such things:

  • Checking speed in major benchmarks.
  • Design, build quality and case materials.
  • Interfaces, operating system.
  • Conclusions: advantages and disadvantages.

Nokia 6 marks the return to the market of the once leading manufacturer of mobile devices in the world. The company lost its leading position with the beginning of the smartphone era, initially abandoning the use of the Android OS in favor of its own Symbian operating system, and later, after moving under the wing of Windows, it failed with the Windows Mobile platform.

Nokia now belongs to the HMD Global brand, founded by former employees of the Finnish company, who see China as their main target market. That is why Nokia 6, designed to resurrect the cult brand, is so far sold exclusively in the Middle Kingdom. But the manufacturer is already promising a European version, similar to the one we received for review. Let's figure out how successful the new product turned out to be and whether it can compete with popular smartphones in its price segment and which others can please us.

Price and main characteristics

Nokia 6 went on sale at the official price of $255, but due to the increased excitement, all Internet sites (Aliexpress, JD.com) raised the price to $300-330, which will not drop until the first month or two of deliveries of the device.

Nokia 6 specifications

  • display: 5.5”, IPS LCD Full HD 1920*1080 px;
  • processor: Snapdragon 430 (1.4 GHz) + Adreno 505 video accelerator;
  • RAM: 4 GB;
  • internal memory: 64 GB + micro SD memory cards up to 128 GB;
  • camera: main – 16 MP, front – 8 MP;
  • communication: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, LTE;
  • battery: 3000 mAh.

At the first glance at the characteristics of the gadget, the question involuntarily arises: what is there to pay $250 for? Indeed, smartphones from Xiaomi, ZTE, Le Eco and Meizu with similar technical characteristics are much cheaper, around 150 bucks. However, let's not draw hasty conclusions.

Equipment and appearance

Nokia 6 comes in a fairly large cardboard box, on the front of which there is an image of clasped hands and the Nokia company logo. The box is durable, the cardboard is thick - there is no need to worry about damage to the packaging when delivering from China.

The smartphone comes with:

  • Micro-USB cable;
  • charging adapter (5V, 2A);
  • wired headset;
  • clip;
  • documentation.

The device was presented well, opening the packaging and the many bags containing each of the accessories was really nice.

The design of Nokia 6 is the strong point of the smartphone; the gadget is made really well. It is made in a black all-metal case with almost invisible plastic inserts for the antennas. The metal surface is matte, has a tactilely pleasant rough finish, does not slip in the hand and does not collect fingerprints.

The camera block protrudes slightly beyond the surface of the housing cover, which raises concerns about the safety of the optics. Nokia does not say what kind of glass the camera module is covered with; if it is not sapphire glass, you should expect scratches to appear on the camera during use.

The glass on the front side of the case is made using 2.5D technology; it is a tempered impact-resistant material Corning Gorilla Glass 3, resistant to scratches and mechanical stress. Under the screen there are touch navigation buttons, there is a backlight, but their layout is somewhat non-standard: return is on the left, on the right is calling running applications. The central Home button is combined with a fingerprint scanner; it works stably, but does not break performance records.

Above the display is the company logo, front camera, earpiece and notification indicator.

The side frame is made of aluminum; it protrudes slightly beyond the boundaries of the main surfaces, which does not impair the ergonomics of the smartphone. The arrangement of functional elements on the side frame of the smartphone is standard: on the left there is a hybrid slot for 2 Nano and Micro-SIM cards or one SIM card and Micro-SD (up to 128 GB).

On the right is a mechanical volume rocker and a screen lock key. The button travel is smooth, with good feedback.

At the bottom there is a Micro-USB 2.0 port, a hole for the main speaker and a second microphone for noise reduction.

On top is a 3.5 mm headphone output.

Overall, the Nokia 6 build is excellent. When you hold a smartphone in your hand, you feel like you are holding a flagship device, and not just another mid-price gadget, similar to thousands of similar devices.

Screen

Nokia 6 is equipped with a 5.5-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1920*1080 pixels and a pixel density of 403 ppi. The display is made using inCell technology, there is no air gap. The screen is good in all respects; it has correct color reproduction, high contrast and sufficient brightness for comfortable use of the smartphone in the sun. Automatic brightness adjustment also works adequately.

The display is covered with protective glass Gorilla Glass 3, which did not show a single scratch during several days of testing. The oleophobic coating is good, the screen collects fingerprints in small quantities and can be wiped off without any problems.

Performance

The greatest public outrage after the presentation of the new product was caused by the performance of Nokia 6, which is seriously inferior to competitive solutions in its price segment. Of course, the smartphone does not pretend to be a gaming smartphone, but for people who are indifferent to gaming, its power is enough.

Thus, the 8-core Snapdragon 430 (1.4 GHz, 64 Bits) ensures fast and smooth operation of the interface, Internet scrolling and the operation of any applications, and you can play all games on your smartphone, even the most demanding ones, just not at maximum graphics settings .

Now to the positives. Memory – there is as much as 4 GB of RAM, which allows the smartphone not to experience problems with performance and keeping running applications in the cache, built-in memory 64 GB (52 GB available out of the box), it is possible to expand the storage with cards up to 128 GB. The characteristics are sensible and balanced for comfortable everyday use of the phone.

Camera

We liked the Nokia 6 camera. The main 16 MP module with an f/2.0 aperture and a pixel size of 1 micron produces images with excellent detail and sharpness, the dynamic range of the matrix is wide - overexposure is extremely rare even in bright sun. The only complaint is about color rendering, sometimes the picture turns out to be too faded and low-contrast, but these are already software problems and, most likely, they will be resolved with the release of a firmware update.

The quality sags only when shooting in poor lighting, you can feel the lack of optical stabilization and the aperture of the optics is not the highest, but the image does not turn into a noisy soap and the quality remains quite acceptable.

The camera can record video in FHD 60fps format, digital stabilization works very well here, and autofocus performance when recording video can be called one of the fastest on the market. In general, in terms of photo capabilities, Nokia 6 does not disappoint and receives a well-deserved 4+.

Speaker, sound quality

The device is equipped with high-quality stereo speakers with a total power of 8 db, the volume of which is controlled by paired TFA-9891 sound amplifiers. The sound of the smartphone is really cool - there is no metallic color to the sound, there are noticeable low frequencies. It’s nice to listen to music and watch movies from your phone, and thanks to the large volume reserve, incoming signals and notifications can be heard even in noisy places.

The sound in the Nokia 6 headphones is good, but not outstanding. The audio path of the Snapdragon 430 processor produces clear sound with adequate frequency range, which allows you to achieve good results when using high-quality headphones. And thanks to the presence of a dedicated amplifier, the smartphone is able to drive any equipment - from in-ear headphones to professional closed-type headphones.

Battery

The Nokia 6 has a 3000 mAh non-removable battery. At first glance, this is a very modest indicator, but in practice, the smartphone confidently survives the working day. Not the most powerful hardware and adequate screen resolution have an effect. The smartphone supports Quick Charge 3.0 technology; fast charging from zero to maximum takes no more than 60 minutes. Charging using a standard adapter takes 100-110 minutes.

Communication and Internet

The Chinese version of Nokia 6 supports most common GSM, WCDMA and CDMA bands. The smartphone works without problems with all domestic operators and reliably picks up communication signals, 3G and LTE Internet. For wireless interfaces, everything is standard - Wi-Fi at 2.4 5 GHz, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS and Baidu navigation.

What is not encouraging is the use of outdated USB 2.0 instead of USB Type-C. To connect external storage devices and peripherals to your smartphone, you will have to additionally use an OTG adapter.

Video review of Nokia 6

Competitors, conclusion

Nokia 6 is a good smartphone, but it would be even better if it cost $150-200. We can state a fact - the price of the gadget is clearly overpriced, however, as we see, this does not prevent it from being sold successfully. According to the manufacturer, the first batch of 1 million smartphones was sold in one minute.

Many people were waiting for the return of Nokia and, by and large, got what they wanted - a well-made device with an interesting design, a cool camera and performance that can fully satisfy the needs of the average user.

Add to this the strength and reliability of the gadget (the description of the above video is unnecessary - Nokia 6 is going through something after which not every secure phone will work), the presence of the latest Android 7.0, as well as a potentially large community of owners in which many custom firmware will appear. As a result, we have a cool device, the only serious drawback of which is the price.
