We show you how to change the engine oil and oil filter with your own hands on Honda Civic 4D and 5D cars with a 1.8 (R18A1) engine.

Place the machine on a lift, overpass or inspection hole. Warm up the engine until operating temperature. Unscrew the oil filler cap; if this cannot be done by hand, use a 14 mm spanner. Remove the crankcase protection, if it is installed on the car. Unscrew the drain bolt using a socket or 17mm spanner:

Drain the old engine oil into a prepared container. From my own experience, I can say that about 3.5 liters are poured out. After draining the oil, screw the drain bolt back and install a new sealing washer on it. Washer article number for ordering: 94109-140-00. If you have a torque wrench, the tightening torque will be 39 Hm. Do not overtighten the drain bolt to avoid damaging the threads in the oil pan.

Remove the oil filter using a special wrench or puller:

Make sure the seal from the old filter is not stuck to the seating surface on the engine block. Wipe the seating surface dry with a clean rag. Apply a small amount of new oil to the rubber seal of the new filter. Screw the filter in by hand, after the O-ring is seated, tighten the filter clockwise with a tightening torque of 12 Hm. Article number of the new original filter to order: 15400-RTA-003.

Pour new engine oil into the engine using a funnel, ours is homemade from an old bottle. The volume of oil to be filled, taking into account oil filter equal to 3.7 liters.

Screw the oil filler cap back on. Start the engine and let it run for at least 3 minutes, then turn it off. Check the level on the dipstick, it should be between the min and max marks. Make sure there are no oil leaks in the lower part of the engine compartment. After this, install engine protection. According to the data technical regulations manufacturer, the engine oil must be changed once a year or every 15 thousand km. mileage, under standard operating conditions. If the car operates in “difficult” conditions, this figure must be reduced to 7.5 thousand km. mileage

Conclusion

The Honda Civic manufacturer insists on using original motor oils throughout the entire operating period of the vehicle. The recommended engine oil for Honda Civic stabilizes engine performance and extends its service life. When selecting a lubricant, you need to take into account the thickness of the oil and the tolerances on the canister. For winter, pour more fluid oil than for summer. All-season lubricants should be used at moderate temperatures outside the car.

The oil base plays an important role when selecting a lubricant. Synthetics and semi-synthetics are purchased to operate the car at very high or low temperatures. Mineral motor oil is not capable of operating in a wide temperature range; it is poured for moderate operating temperatures.

I have a question. I come to the store, and they shove the first thing on the shelf at me. They say this oil will suit you. I would like to learn how to navigate oils myself. How to choose the right engine oil for a Honda Civic?
(Belyalov Reshat)

The operation of engines of certain car brands with the same brands of oil may differ. Some engines respond well to certain oils, while others show less encouraging results.

When choosing oil for Honda cars, it is worth noting important criteria. The manufacturer itself recommends fluid classes SL, SJ, SM. Each lubricating fluid corresponds to certain parameters. The Honda manufacturer recommends using motor oils with viscosity parameters 0w20, 5w20, 5w30 and 10w30 for its engines. Let's take a closer look at what each of the parameters means.

In the inscription 5w20 - the first digit “5” is an indicator of the viscosity of the oil in frosty weather. The lower this figure, the greater the fluidity of the liquid in negative temperature conditions. For comparison: oils with 0w20 values begin to thicken at temperatures from -42 to -45C 0 . The same thing happens with liquids that have a reading of 10w30 at temperatures from -35 C 0. When a lubricant becomes thick, it loses its performance properties.

The second digit “20” determines the viscosity of the oil at high temperatures. The higher the number, the higher the temperature at which the oil viscosity remains normalized.

Honda also depends on engine wear. For engines whose mileage has not yet exceeded 100,000 kilometers, it is still worth filling in oils with the parameters recommended by the manufacturer - 5w30 or 0w20. For engines that have exceeded this limit, it is better to pour oils with a higher second parameter, for example, 5w40.

However, this applies to motors operating with timing belt. For chain construction they remain relevant even for long runs.

An important reason why certain brands of motors do not work well with Hondas is burnout.

“Flammable” liquids include such as Shell, Castrol, and oils from domestic manufacturers. Not because they are of poor quality, but precisely because of the high percentage of waste in Honda engines. The highest compatibility indicators were for oils from Mobil 1 and LiquiMoly.

One of the options when carefully selecting motor oils for Honda cars is to consult a specialist who carries out technical diagnostics your car. You can also check the details with official dealer your brand.

Some engine models running on motor lubricant with identical characteristics exhibit different parameters. And this fact must be taken into account when choosing oil for a Honda car engine. In addition, the Japanese automaker indicates tolerances and specifications in the operating instructions, according to which it is recommended to fill in oils corresponding to categories SJ, SL, SM.

The parameters of different brands of lubricants differ from each other. Each type has certain properties and characteristics. For Honda cars, the automaker recommends using compounds with viscosities of 5w30, 10w30, 5w20, 0w20, depending on the climate.

Choosing oil for a Japanese car

When choosing what to pour into a Honda engine, you need to take into account its current condition. If it is worn out and the mileage has exceeded 100,000 km, then it is preferable to fill in oil according to the service instructions, with a viscosity of 0w20 and 5w30.

With a mileage over 120,000, it is optimal to pour 5w40 compounds. However, such a product may only be suitable for those car models that have timing belts installed.

If the motor system is equipped with a chain mechanism, then it is better to use branded oils from the manufacturer or alternative analogues that meet Honda approvals.

On a note! Some types of oils are not suitable for Honda cars, even though the technical characteristics and viscosity parameters are consistent. For example, Castrol and Shell motor oils burn out in motor system Honda.

This is due to the fact that power units of Japanese cars are characterized by a large amount of waste. Therefore, it is recommended to use Liquid Moly or Mobile.

Honda SRV engine oil

The replacement frequency is 10-15,000 mileage, depending on operating conditions. Alternatively, ZIC XF or Idemitzu Zepro.

For the 3rd generation of Honda SRV engines 2007-2012, the original Honda Motor Oil is recommended.

According to ACEA standardization, the oil must correspond to group A1/B1/A3/B3 or A5/B5. According to the viscosity characteristics, 5w30, 0w30, 0w20 are applicable at temperature conditions from -30°C to + 40°C.

By API classifications the liquid must comply with category SL. Car enthusiasts use Honda SRV 3 motor lubricants, meeting the manufacturer’s tolerances:

  • Honda 5w30;
  • Shell Ultra Helix;
  • Idemitsu Zepro;
  • Liqui Moly;
  • ProFix SN GF-5.

  • Idemitsu Zepro;
  • Liquid Moly;
  • Honda 5w20.

Filling volume – 3.7 liters. For replacement - 3.5 l. The service interval is 10-12 thousand kilometers. In more difficult operating conditions, it is recommended to change the lubricant after 7-8 thousand km.

Honda Civic 4D 2006-2012

By classification SAE oil selected according to the climate of the region where the car is operated. From -30°C to +40°C, it is optimal to fill oils with a viscosity of 5w40, 5w30, 0w30, 0w40. For warmer climates with temperatures from -20 to +40 - with a viscosity of 10w40,10w30.

Honda Civic 5d (Honda Civic hatchback)

For the Honda 5D internal combustion engine, Honda 0W20/30, Honda 5W20 are applicable. Replacement requires 3.4 liters. Frequency: 5-7.5 thousand km.

Viscosity parameters are the most important information for an unmistakable choice. If the oil is too thick, the engine will be less efficient and difficult to start. But if it flows too easily, it will not seal and lubricate the engine properly.

Every vehicle, including the Honda Civic, needs regular maintenance, and the durability of the engine will directly depend on what kind of oil is poured into the Honda Civic.

Honda Fit engine oil

Under the name Fit, the model is popular in Japan, China, South and North America. As Jazz is known in Europe, Australia, Africa, the Middle East and certain Asian countries.

Viscosity parameters are selected based on operating weather conditions vehicle. Motor oils with viscosity indices 0w20, 5w40, 0w40, 5w30, 0w30 are recommended at temperatures from -30°C +40°C. Lubricants 10w40 and 10w30 – at temperatures from -15°C to +40°C.

According to the recommendations from the Japanese manufacturer, it is necessary to use lubricants for Honda cars of the first modification according to API classification SJ, SG, SH. For 2nd generation cars produced since 2009 with Honda GX390 engines - with a viscosity level of 5w30, 0w30.

You can also use Honda Motor oils. According to ACEA standardization, motor oils must comply with A3/B3, A1/B1. They increase the service life of the internal combustion engine system and reduce fuel consumption.

According to the API classification, compliance with the SL category is required. Depending on climatic conditions, you can use lubricants with viscosity 5w40, 0w30, 0w40, 0w20, 10w40, 0w30.

Honda Fit 2001-2008

For the first generation Honda Fit, under standard operating conditions, the interval between replacements is a year or 15,000 km. If the car is driven in difficult conditions, the interval is reduced to 7.5 thousand kilometers or six months.

Honda Fit 2007-2013

In the second generation Fit models produced in Thailand, Indonesia or Brazil, the manufacturer recommends changing the lubricant every 10 thousand km, but at least once every 12 months (or up to 5 thousand km or six months - in heavy conditions).

The 2nd generation Honda Fit, made in China, Japan or Taiwan, needs to be replaced every 20 thousand km, or once a year (every 10 thousand km, or once every six months).

What does "difficult conditions" mean?

  • long distances at low speeds;
  • if the engine often idles for a long time;
  • temperature changes;
  • mountain passes;
  • moving through dirt/dust;
  • increased overloads: towing trailers, transporting goods.

For 2nd generation Honda Fit cars - branded lubricants for improved engine performance and fuel efficiency. According to the API classification, they must comply with the SL category.

These vehicles are not equipped with a maintenance warning system. Therefore, for such versions it is recommended to fill according to the ACEA A5/B5 standard.
