History of the vaz brand. Postmodernism supplanted the classics Suspended accelerator pedal and windshield washer

By the beginning of the sixties, "Zaporozhtsy", "Muscovite", "Volga" and "Pobeda" were driving along the roads of the USSR. However, the huge developing country lacked passenger cars. Cars were almost impossible to buy - they were only distributed according to lists at factories. Therefore, in July 1966, the CPSU Central Committee decided to build a new car plant. He should have become the largest automaker in the country to satisfy the Soviet citizen's need for a private car. This is how the history of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant began. The plant was built in record time. It took only three years out of the allotted six. Production equipment for VAZ was manufactured at 844 factories in the USSR, 900 factories in other socialist countries, as well as in Europe and the United States.

History of creation

Italians, friendly to the Soviet Union, were instructed to build a new modern automobile plant in Togliatti. The agreement signed by the Ministry of the Automotive Industry of the USSR with the Fiat concern in August 1966 meant not only the construction of a full-cycle enterprise, but also equipping it with equipment, as well as personnel training. The new production was named "VAZ" - the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. To name it by analogy with other factories in the country, for example, Gorkovskiy and Ulyanovskiy, was not allowed by considerations of political correctness and naming rules: inappropriate jokes would have been inevitable.

The emblem for the VAZ models was to be invented by Soviet designers. The idea to place a boat on the badge, like the sketch of the future logo itself, belongs to the employee of the capital's management of the plant, Alexander Dekalenkov. Italians were commissioned to make emblems for cars. Incidentally, an incident was connected with this. The first three dozen logos were issued by Fiat with an error - instead of the letter "I" in the word "Togliatti", the Italians wrote "R". The curiosity did without scandals - the defective logos were urgently replaced.

Ups and downs

From the first days of work, the Volga auto giant did not experience any problems. The demand for cars was such that sales were limited only to production volumes. After about a year of operation, the plant produced 100,000 "kopecks", and after another two and a half years, the millionth "VAZ" rolled off the assembly line.

In 1973, the "kopeck" began to be delivered abroad. Then the "export" brand "Lada" appeared. As it turned out, the name "Zhiguli", which was worn by all VAZ cars, is consonant among the French with the word "Gigolo", that is, "a man dancing for money." Therefore, it was necessary to rename the export "Zhiguli" in "Lada". Subsequently, cars for the domestic market were also labeled with Ladas, and subsequently the name Zhiguli was banned altogether.

With the arrival of the nineties and the collapse of the USSR, the plant faced a previously unheard-of concept - "competition". Against the background of criminal wars for control over VAZ, which claimed hundreds of lives, a stream of used foreign cars poured into the country. Decades of existence without competition hampered the development of the automobile giant, and VAZ cars hopelessly lagged behind foreign ones. The Russians lost interest in Zhiguli, and the plant had to reduce the volume of car production. The state tried to solve the problem by raising customs duties on the import of used foreign cars, but this did not help.

After years of searching for a way out of the crisis, he was found in collaboration with Renault-Nissan. In 2008, the alliance became the owner of a 25% stake in AvtoVAZ. In the same year, AvtoVAZ got a new chief designer - Steve Mattin. Previously, he held similar positions at Mercedes and Volvo.

From "Classics" to modern

The first car that rolled off the VAZ assembly line in 1970 was a slightly revised Fiat. It was a Fiat 124 sedan, adapted for Soviet operating conditions. The model received an increased ground clearance from 110 to 175 mm, reinforced suspension and brakes, as well as the designation VAZ 2101, for which it was popularly nicknamed "Kopeyka". It was a symbol of the Soviet automotive era and the founder of a whole family of rear-wheel drive sedans and station wagons - "classics". "Kopeyka" has gone through more than one reincarnation in subsequent models of AvtoVAZ. One of the heirs of "Kopeyka", VAZ 2104, was taken out of production only in 2012.

Following the "Kopeyka" in 1971, the VAZ 2102 station wagon was launched into production. Then the "Troika" VAZ 2103 appeared - the "luxury" model of the VAZ. In fact, it was a thoroughly revised Kopeyka. Four headlights, chrome, a nifty dashboard. It was replaced by the VAZ 2106, which went down in history as the auto giant's best-selling model. For 30 years of life on the assembly line, 4.3 million "Sixes" were sold. After a serious restyling of "Kopeyka", VAZ 2105, VAZ 2107 and VAZ 2104 appeared. The cars received rectangular headlights, an updated interior and modernized engines. At the present time "Troika" is extremely popular among lovers of antiquity, and "Six" - among taxi drivers from warm countries.

By the end of the seventies, the auto giant began to produce the first model. off-road VAZ 2121 "Niva" (since 2006 - Lada 4x4). Design elements and details from the "Six" were widely used in its construction, and the interior was taken almost unchanged at all. VAZ 2121 was the only in-house development of AvtoVAZ and the first crossover in the world.

An absolutely new generation of cars ("Sputnik") appeared at VAZ only in the mid-1980s. For the index 2108 he was nicknamed "Eight", and for the wedge-shaped front end - "Chisel". The new engine, gearbox, aerodynamics, power structure of the body, front-wheel drive, MacPherson suspension and much more are the result of close cooperation of Togliatti with Porsche and the Fiat division (UTS). As part of this partnership, work was carried out to create the "Eight" on all fronts except design. He was not entrusted to the Germans. Later, versions of the "Eight" with five-door hatchback and sedan bodies went into production. The latter, in parallel with the VAZ 2108, were prepared by the Togliatti residents themselves.

By the end of the eighties, VAZ launched the production of the cheap Oka minicar. The Togliatti people borrowed ideas and technical solutions from the 1980 Daihatsu Cuore. For 20 years, starting in 1988, "" produced first AvtoVAZ, and then KAMAZ and SeAZ.

In the early nineties, the plant appeared in the model range. The sedan, developed on the G8 chassis, received an original body and interior. It was followed by a hatchback and station wagon. After that, for almost 10 years, the plant did not try to put new items on the conveyor.

In 2003, production began at the joint venture GM-AvtoVAZ. The following year, Togliatti residents set up production of the compact Kalina family (sedan, hatchback and station wagon). And in 2007, VAZ produced a deeply modernized "top ten" -. At the end of 2011, the Kalina sedan was replaced by its cheaper and revised modification, which was named Grant. And in 2012, a station wagon built on the basis of the conveyor was put on the conveyor.

In the near future, it is planned to start production of several more models on the platform of the Renault-Nissan alliance. But the company assures that AvtoVAZ's own cars will be modernized and the conveyor will not be abandoned.

About 70% of the details of Grant's new sedan came from Kalina.

The developer of Niva, Pyotr Mikhailovich Prusov, claims that the car was named after his children Natalia and Irina and the children of the first chief designer of VAZ, Solovyov Vadim and Andrey.

VAZ 2121 "Niva" was the only Soviet model ever officially sold in Japan.

Initially, the city of Togliatti was named Stavropol. However, on August 28, 1964, by decision of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, it was renamed in honor of the General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party Palmiro Togliatti, who died a week earlier while visiting the children's camp "Artek".

In 1966, construction began in the city of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant, the largest in Russia, for the production of passenger cars... In parallel with the construction of the plant, a new residential area of Togliatti was also being erected

From Soviet times to our days, Lada has been a favorite tuning object. It all started with brake fluid splashing in the round headlights of classic models and continues to this day. Over the years, the trends in tuning VAZ cars have repeatedly changed.

In 1977, AvtoVAZ received the USSR State Prize in the field of art, literature and architecture.

For a long time, lifting on the rear of the roof of the models 2108 and 2109 was considered a "sabotage" by Porsche specialists, because it greatly contaminated the rear window and increased the drag coefficient. Later it turned out that this "tail" is necessary for greater stability of the car at speed.

In the summer of 2010, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin drove more than 300 km along the new Amur highway from Khabarovsk to Chita, driving a bright yellow sedan Lada Kalina. This body color was soon renamed from Sport to Premier. By the way, during this trip for Putin's motorcade, just in case, there were two more exactly the same spare Kalinas. One under its own power, and the second on a tow truck.

A year after the rally, the plant began production of modern wheelchairs.

The last representative of the domestic "classic" VAZ 2107 (or "Seven") since 2006 and is still being produced at the Egyptian plant Lada-Egypt.

The first "Kopeyka" with serial number 0000001, issued in 1970, was in the hands of one owner in Samara for 30 years. In 2000, the plant bought it for its museum. The millionth VAZ 2103 is also stored nearby.

The chief designer of AvtoVAZ, Steve Mattin, until 2005, participated in the development of the appearance of Mercedes A-class, S-class, M and GL-class. After that, until 2009, he was involved in the design of the Volvo S60, V60 and XC60 models.

VAZ-2101 or simply "Zhiguli" is one of the most famous Soviet-made cars, the descendants of which were produced right up to 2012. During its existence, it has undergone quite serious changes and received several awards and prizes, so let's talk about what the life of this car was like.

Union with Fiat

The very first VAZ 2101 was produced at the Volga Automobile Plant. This happened thanks to the signing in 1966 of an agreement between the Italian firm Fiat and the Soviet "Vneshnetorg" on cooperation in the development of passenger cars. It was within the framework of this agreement that the project for the construction of a plant for cars on the territory of the USSR was adopted.

According to preliminary agreements, several cars were to be produced at this plant at once. It had to be 2 cars with a sedan body in the standard configuration, and one station wagon in a luxury configuration. If we talk about where the concept of cars of the class norm came from, then the Fiat 124 was identified as a prototype, which literally next year received the title of "Car of the Year"

Why Fiat 124 did not fit

When Soviet scientists and specialists took up the study and testing of the car, which was taken as the basis for the development of their own car, several shortcomings were identified at once, which had to be eliminated when developing a car, which in the future will be called nothing but the VAZ-2101. First of all, experts drew attention to the fact that the Fiat 124 is not suitable for our roads due to the extremely small ground clearance and the complete absence of towing eyes, without which the car would be difficult to use off-road.
In addition, the car body itself was not sufficiently reliable and strong and could hardly withstand the intensity of operation that was expected for a Soviet car.

How the VAZ-2101 became better than the Fiat 124

Italian engineers took into account all the wishes of Soviet researchers and future Zhiguli got drum brakes on the rear axle, an improved front and a fundamentally new suspension on the rear axle and an improved gearbox. This is not a complete list of modifications that were made to the Fiat124R, a Russian-language model of the Italian Fiat.
In total, there were more than 800 changes, and some of these comments were subsequently used personally by Fiat when developing new cars of its series. These requirements of Soviet engineers and researchers helped Fiat to collect unique information about the reliability and passability of cars of its brand in off-road conditions.

The first six VAZ-2101

The very first six cars rolled off the assembly line on April 19, 1970, so this very day can be called the birthday of the Zhiguli. It is worth noting that the first cars were only in two color options and 2 blue and 4 red cars were produced.

These first 6 prototypes showed excellent results on tests and improvements were minimal, so that already in August 1970 the plant started working in full power... And the plant's capacity was really impressive. By the end of the year, 21530 cars were produced at the newly built plant in Togliatti
The plant gradually increased its turnover and by 1973 managed to produce 379,007 “Zhiguli.

Why exactly "Zhiguli"

In fact, the name of the VAZ-2101 could have been completely different. According to one version, the name was born at the plant, and was approved back in 1976, and according to the other, it was invented on a competitive basis. In 1970, the magazine Za Rulem wrote about the intermediate result of the competition. A list of 1,812 names was also published there, which were selected by the commission for consideration. In total, about 55,000 titles were sent, some of which were funny, some were funny, and some were simply ridiculous.
What could the VAZ-2101 be called:

  • Violet
  • Falcon
  • Pervorozhets
  • Memorial
  • Youth
  • Dream
  • Directive
  • Falcon

One way or another, but the final name was precisely "Zhiguli", and a little later the people called this car nothing but "Kopeyka" per unit at the end of the model number.

Modern motorists adapt the VAZ-2101 even for drifts:

Classifications and numbering

It is worth mentioning that, in addition to significant improvements compared to the Italian prototype, domestic Zhiguli became the first car produced in the USSR, which received such a document as normal OH 025370-66. This document regulated the classification and designation system of rolling stock.

Now, each new car of a series or trailer was assigned a four-digit number, the first two digits of which indicated the class of the car or trailer, and the last two - its model. Sometimes the fifth digit was also used, which said that this car was a modification of a certain model and one could immediately understand what changes were made to this particular car.

Additional digits in the number were also sometimes used. The sixth digit could show what climate the car is intended for and whether it was intended for import. In rare cases, additional numbers were added with a hyphen, which showed that this car was an intermediate modification of the car.

Comparison of VAZ-2101 (1970) and Lada Granta (2012)

It is thanks to this that, looking at the inscription VAZ-21011, one can immediately understand that this car was made at the Volga Automobile Plant (VAZ), belongs to a small class of car with an engine from 1200 to 1800 cubic centimeters (21) and is the first model of this car in this class (01) with the first version of the modification, which differs from the original by installing the engine at 1300 cubic centimeters (1).

Modifications of the VAZ-2101

Throughout the history of the existence of this car, many different modifications have been released. Among them were cars designed exclusively for the needs of the plant where Lada was produced, and even such interesting solutions as Lada limousines, which were used abroad for a long time.

VAZ-2101

This is the very first version of "Kopeyka", which was very popular both among motorists and among the developers themselves. It is not surprising that this car became the basis for future modifications, because it was extremely successful. It is worth noting that the VAZ-2101 was equipped with a 1.2-liter engine.

The first modification we mentioned above. The main difference from the traditional "Kopeyka" in this model is the engine. It was much more powerful than the previous version of the car, and its volume was increased to 1.3 liters.
The car has also undergone quite strong changes in terms of design. Basically, these changes concerned improved ventilation of the cooling radiator - four additional slots appeared in front and the shape of the radiator grill was changed. Also, reversing lights were installed on this modification from 1974 to 1983 inclusive.

The main difference between this modification and the VAZ-21011 is a less powerful engine, identical to that installed on the original "Kopeyka" (1.2 liters); otherwise, the changes made in 21011 were preserved in version 21013.

Lada was also produced for export, and these cars were known under the name Lada 1200 in almost all countries of the Socialist Commonwealth. First of all, they appeared in Czechoslovakia, the German Democratic Republic, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Hungary, and the total number of such cars totaled more than 57 thousand cars.
Over time, the Lada 1200 earned respect among foreign motorists, and very soon these cars could be seen on the roads of Germany, Austria, France and even Nigeria.

VAZ-21012 and VAZ-21014

The glory of the Zhiguli was not limited The Soviet Union... Especially for countries with left-hand traffic, two modifications of the Zhiguli were released at once. First of all, they differed in the right-hand steering and reinforced spring suspension right front wheel. The fact is that when the controls were moved to the other side, the mass of the car began to be distributed unevenly and it was necessary to organize such a compensation system. In total, these cars were produced from 1974 to 1982.

Nothing in the Soviet Union was wasted, and even defective Zhiguli. Instead of being written off due to body defects, they were converted into pickups and later used for the needs of the factory. The entire rear part of the roof just behind the front seats was simply cut off and a new cab wall was installed. The rear doors were welded to increase the rigidity of the structure, and as a result, the carrying capacity of such pickups could be 300 kg.
Of course, such cars did not go into series production, but some amateurs even independently carried out such improvements over their "Kopeks".

"Limousine" VAZ 2101

No matter how comical it sounds, but cars of this modification not only existed, but also enjoyed immense popularity in Cuba. Here they were used as route taxis and coped with this task quite easily.

There are many interesting stories about this car, which has managed to fall in love with domestic motorists, but the most unusual of these facts should be described separately, because Kopeyka, although already out of production, is still often found on our roads.

Starter and starting handle

The Soviet auto industry cannot be accused of lack of foresight. In the repair tool bag that came with the car, one could find starting handle... Of course, this could horrify foreigners, but the instructions said that it was intended solely for starting the car in very cold winters or after a long parking. According to the compilers of the instructions, it was necessary to turn the handle several times with neutral gear and the ignition off, after which it was possible to carry out a normal start using the starter

Suspended accelerator pedal and washer

An accessory such as a suspended accelerator pedal appeared only in the VAZ-21011. Before that, in the traditional kopeck, the gas pedal was with a floor installation. The floor washer button also appeared along with the first modification of the car, because before that it was located on the dashboard next to the washer mode switch and the light switch.

Foreign spare parts in the VAZ-2101

Naturally, not all the parts used for the production of the first Zhiguli were domestic. Under the hoods of some Kopeks, one could find Weber carburetors, some cars were equipped with non-collapsible foreign-made shock absorbers, which were much more reliable and durable than domestic ones. The same situation happened with spark plugs.

Curiosities with the logo

In total, there were three types of emblems for the Zhiguli. The most famous of them was a silvery boat on a ruby background, which has flaunted on all VAZ-2101s since 1971. But the fact is that on 1970 cars the issued badge was also supplemented with the inscription "Togliatti". There were very few such emblems, since a year later it was ordered to remove the inscription unmasking the location of the automobile plant, which at that time was considered an extremely important strategic object. A car with such a logo is a real rarity.

However, an even rarer logo is a mistakenly made logo with the Cyrillic letter "I" replaced by the Latin "R". This happened due to the fact that the first batch of emblems was ordered at the Fiat plant in Turin, and there the Italians, through an oversight, simply confused the letters. All the emblems, and there were about 30 of them, were simply dismantled by VAZ employees for souvenirs and now this emblem is very much appreciated, but it is almost impossible to get it.

Overall rating of the VAZ-2101

According to the general assessments of motorists and experts, the VAZ-2101 became a real breakthrough and triumph in the Soviet automotive industry. Even young motorists, who received a license quite recently, could use this car practically without restrictions. The limitations concerned only the speeds during the running-in of the car. Thanks to Kopeyka, Soviet motorists realized that even in a small car one can feel comfortable, stay warm in winter and talk in the cabin without raising their voices. Of course, in many respects it was the merit of our Italian partners, because our Zhiguli took a lot from Fiat 124.

Starting the engine in winter no longer turned into a ritual with blowtorches and buckets of hot water, as it used to be. With the advent of the VAZ-2101, motorists even managed without a starter handle, which for the most part became possible thanks to the Weber 32 DCR two-chamber carburetor, which were more advanced than their Soviet counterparts of that era.
These carburetors began later to be produced in the Soviet Union under the DAAZ-2101 marking and eventually even migrated under the hoods of the Volga and other domestic cars, where they were carefully installed by the hands of motorists.

In general, the appearance of the VAZ-2101 was a real breakthrough in the car market in the Soviet Union, and even now not everyone has abandoned this car and they can still be found on the streets of cities.

"Lada - the key to the roads of Russia"- this is how the motto of the AvtoVAZ company sounds.
AvtoVAZ OJSC is the largest Russian company in the automotive industry. Also, this company is the largest manufacturer of passenger cars road transport in Eastern Europe. Relatively recently, the controlling stake in this company passed into the hands of the Renault-Nissan alliance, which gave a new round of development for AvtoVAZ.

Today, the official name of the company sounds like Open Joint Stock Company "AvtoVAZ", but this was not always the case. In the period from 1966 to 1971, the company was called the Volzhsky Automobile Plant, and from 1971 until the entry into the Renault-Nissan alliance, the Volga Association for the production of passenger cars "AvtoVAZ" was called.

In addition to the change of names, it is full of many other interesting events. The most interesting of them were the releases and closings of car production. HISTORY of AvtoVAZ

For the first time, they started talking about the need to build a new modern automobile plant in the USSR in 1966, it was in this year that the history of AvtoVAZ began. At the next congress of the Central Committee of the CPSU, which took place on July 20, it was approved that a new production facility would be built in the city of Togliatti, which would produce the most modern cars. In order for these cars to be competitive in the world market, to the technical equipment and training of personnel, the Soviet government decided to involve the friendly Italian automobile concern Fiat in those years.

The new plant began operations in 1969, when its first labor brigades were formed. The first cars rolled off the assembly line a year later. These were cars that were designed on the basis of the Italian FIAT-124. Below, we will tell you more about this and many other cars that have ever rolled off the assembly line of AvtoVAZ.

VAZ 2101

This is a four-door sedan, which, as we said above, was built on the basis of the Fiat 124. To adapt to Soviet roads, the car has undergone more than 800 changes. So, he was equipped with a larger carburetor engine - 1200 cubic centimeters, plus, the car received a higher ground clearance, and its body and wheel system were reinforced.

A little later, on the basis of this car, the so-called series of classic cars was released: VAZ 21011, which received an even larger engine - 1.3 liters, 21013 - an analogue of 21011, but with an engine from VAZ 2101, as well as a special model for the needs of the police: car VAZ 2101-34, which was equipped with the most powerful engine in this family.

VAZ 2102

The history of AvtoVAZ and its cooperation with the Italian concern Fiat did not stop at the VAZ 2101 model, just a year after the appearance of this car on the market, a new car appeared: which was a licensed version of the Fiat 124 Familiare.

The main modification, in comparison with the VAZ 2101, was the trunk, which was at floor level. This was done in order to facilitate loading and unloading procedures. Unfortunately, because of this refinement, the car had a serious drawback: a weak level of sealing of the interior from the side of the rear door, which caused dust to enter the interior, as well as vapors that came out of the neck of the gas tank.

Another problem with the refinement was the increased weight of the car, which required making the shock absorbers and suspension more rigid. This, of course, allowed us to maintain an acceptable carrying capacity: up to 250 kilograms with 2 passengers and up to 55 kilograms with five passengers, but made the car very stiff when driving.

In 1978, a special model was released: VAZ 21021, which was intended for export. Changes were made to the engine, which was taken from the VAZ 21011 model, as well as the rear luggage glass, which was equipped with a washer and wipers.

Later, for five years, the car was constantly modernized, but did not change its name. A more reliable ignition system was installed in it, an even more powerful engine, and other, less significant adjustments were made, but all this could no longer save the car and in 1985 it was discontinued.

VAZ 2103

The VAZ 2103 car is a modified version of the VAZ 2101, which was all based on the same Fiat 124. It appeared on the market in 1972. The main differences were a more powerful engine: 72 horsepower, and a more spacious cabin: the space above the head of passengers and the driver was increased by 15 millimeters. Also, it should be noted that the VAZ 2103 became the first domestic car on which a vacuum amplifier was installed. brake system as well as a "sports" panel.

In 1980, this car was equipped with a new carburetor, which made the VAZ 2103 more reliable, but just like in the case of the VAZ 2102, the innovations did not save the model. It was discontinued in 1984.

VAZ 2104

The history of AvtoVAZ, as the official manufacturer of station wagons, began with the VAZ 2104 car. This car was released to replace the VAZ 2102 and was intended to absorb all the best from this car, but leave in the past all its shortcomings. For the first time, this car was released in 1984 and was produced until 2012. During this huge lifespan for a car, a lot of modifications of this car appeared on the market:

VAZ 21041 is a special, cheaper version, with a smaller engine.

VAZ 21042 - this modification was released specifically for countries with right-hand traffic

VAZ 21043 - an updated, more modern interior and a new five-speed gearbox.

VAZ 21044 - an updated, larger engine - 1700 cubic centimeters.

VAZ 21045 - an updated, larger engine - 1800 cubic centimeters.

VAZ 21045D is an analogue of VAZ 21044, but with a diesel engine.

VAZ 21047 is an export version of this model.

VAZ 21048 is an analogue of VAZ 21045, but with a diesel engine.

VAZ 21041 is the first and only modification of this car with an injection engine, which had a volume of 1.7 liters.

VAZ 2105

The VAZ 2105 car was the basis of the export line of AvtoVAZ cars. Its design was based on the fashion of the 80s of Europe, but it found quite good popularity in its native country. During the entire production of this car, it, like many other cars of that time, underwent many changes, which became more and more new modifications, but by and large, there was only one serious one, which took place in the early 2000s, when VAZ 2105 began to install injection engines.

Another interesting fact about this car, which is worth mentioning, is that the VAZ 2105 is the first car in the history of AvtoVAZ, which began to have a complete set, and was not produced in only one version.

VAZ 2106

The car is a more modern version of the VAZ 2103. It had a more pleasant design for those years, as well as a more powerful engine, which was comparable to the engines that were installed on the later versions of the VAZ 2103.

Like the previous models of AvtoVAZ, the "six" has received many modifications in its life, but VAZ 21067 became really interesting when the plant first produced a car that met environmental European standards. At that time it was the Euro 2 standard.

VAZ 2107

This vehicle became the first AvtoVAZ car that ran on gasoline higher than AI-76. Another interesting point was the fact that for the first time the special services approached the plant for a car. For them, a special modification of the VAZ 21079 was released, which was equipped with an engine of 140 Horse power.

And of course, one cannot fail to mention the fact that this is the first VAZ car on which a mono-spray system was installed, albeit for an export modification.

VAZ 2108

The VAZ 2108 is the first front-wheel drive car in the history of AvtoVAZ. Initially, the car had a bunch of shortcomings (many associate this with an unusual body for designers: a three-door hatchback), which is why it was not very popular on the market, but after a couple of years, most of them were fixed, consumers were presented with three configurations: "Standard", "Norma" and "Lux", and also equipped the car with a more powerful engine, which breathed new life into the car, which lasted until 2003.

VAZ 2109

The VAZ 2109 car is a five-door hatchback with front-wheel drive. It was produced at AvtoVAZ from 1987 to 2004, and after that, with a larger 1.6-liter engine, it continued to be produced in Ukraine for the domestic market.
Like other AvtoVAZ cars, many modifications of this car were produced, but no critical changes occurred, even the change from a carburetor engine to an injection engine became typical of its time.

VAZ 21099

The car is the same VAZ 2109, but with a rear overhang increased by 200 millimeters. Even the modifications of these cars came out similar. The only major difference was the more thoughtful and relevant security system VAZ 21099, which was the best among domestic cars that time.

VAZ 2110

The car was presented to the management and the general public five times. The first four times, it did not receive approval, as it looked either faceless or strongly resembled cars from other manufacturers, which would have made it difficult to enter foreign markets. Only after specialists from Porsche were involved in the design development in 1988, the designers managed to create a car, which nevertheless entered production and replaced the VAZ 2106 line, which by that time was morally obsolete.

Over the years, this car has undergone major changes in the area of the engine and exhaust system several times. This was due to the fact that it sold well for export, but it was necessary to strictly observe the environmental standards that were often changing in those years. Thus, “tens” were issued, which corresponded to Euro 2, Euro 3, and even Euro 4.

VAZ 2111

This is a family station wagon, which was released on the market for the consistent replacement of the VAZ 2104, but could not really achieve the desired result. At the same time, under the export name Lada 111, he found considerable popularity among foreign buyers. It was all about a very large trunk, which, depending on the position of the rear seats, had a volume of 490 to 1420 liters.

Like other cars that the history of AvtoVAZ knows, it has come a long way, during which more than a dozen modifications of the VAZ 2111 were produced.

VAZ 2113

The VAZ 2113 car became the successor to the AvtoVAZ line of small cars with front-wheel drive in the back of a three-door hatchback. The decision to resume production of such cars was made under pressure from consumers who wanted to see an analogue of the VAZ 2108 on the market.

The car was equipped with a 1.5-liter engine, and it immediately corresponded to the Euro 2 standard, and later, it was modified and began to comply with the Euro 3 standard.

VAZ 2114

The VAZ 2114 car is a decision that was made immediately after the delivery of the VAZ 2113 cars to the conveyor. In fact, the VAZ 2114 replaced the VAZ 2109 cars that were very popular at the time on the market.

To the surprise of many AvtoVAZ fans, this car has received only one modification over the years of its existence, and the difference from the basic version was only in a larger engine.

VAZ 2115

The VAZ 2115 car is a four-door front-wheel drive sedan, which was launched into production as the heir to the market of the previously very popular VAZ 21099 car.
The designers released two modifications, but unlike in previous years, they did not change the name of the car in any way, and also, instead of strengthening the engine, experimented with installing smaller engines. So, they first tried to put a 1.1 liter engine, and when the idea failed - 1.3 liters, but this option did not gain popularity and the plant was forced to return to the original 1.5 liter engine.

VAZ 2112

A VAZ 2112 car is, in fact, a VAZ 2110 in the back of a hatchback. The car was very popular in its time due to its attractive appearance and low price. The same factors made its export modification Lada 112 popular in the foreign market as well.

After the success of the five-door version, the three-door VAZ 2112 Coupe was released, but it did not become popular, which is most likely due to the fact that fans of three-door domestic cars had already gotten used to the VAZ 2108 and VAZ 2113.

Lada Kalina

The car went on sale in 2006. A car was produced in the sedan body and in the hatchback body, and a little later a station wagon body appeared. In 2007, the car was finalized, it began to comply with the Euro 3 standard, and also became more economical.

For the first time in the history of AvtoVAZ, the plant's designers have developed a special version of the car - Lada Kalina GTI, which was intended for fans of high-speed and dynamic driving. The car was much more maneuverable than the base model, and also had better dynamics, but clearly did not reach the GTI class of other manufacturers.

Lada priora

The car is, at the moment, one of the most popular cars in the AvtoVAZ family. For the first time, the history of AvtoVAZ received a car that even picky car magazines called good for its time.

This car is available in sedan, station wagon, three-wheel hatchback and five-door hatchback bodies.

VAZ 2121 and VAZ 2131 Niva

Cars of the series are the only off-road vehicles that are produced by AvtoVAZ independently. They are popular among both domestic consumers and foreign buyers. Undoubtedly, this car has a minimum of comfort, but on the other hand, it shows excellent cross-country ability, and together with the low price it becomes the only representative of the segment of truly budget SUVs.

The difference between VAZ 2121 and VAZ 2131 is that the first car is three-door, and the second is five-door.

Chevrolet NIVA

The Chevrolet Niva car is a modified VAZ 2131, which is assembled in a more modern body and adapted to urban conditions. This car is more comfortable than the classic Niva, but less passable.

Lada granta

A car is a car that is built on the platform of the Renault Logan car, which is very popular in our country. This car is the most budgetary car currently produced by AvtoVAZ and is almost the most popular model in the history of AvtoVAZ.

Lada Largus

A car is a car that replaced the once produced VAZ 2102, later - VAZ 2104, and even later - VAZ 2111. But unlike the previous station wagons, this car received a seven-seat family modification, as well as a "van" modification, which was developed specifically for commercial segment.

The history of the car, which is now known as the VAZ-2110 (Lada 2110), began in 1983 when the first model of the sedan appeared, which strongly resembles the Opel Ascona and Ford Record cars of that time. This car had a rear-wheel drive and, according to plans, it was to be called VAZ-2112, but it did not receive approval for further development.

Development continued, at the beginning of 1984 another unsuccessful layout was built, which was also abandoned. The matter got off the ground only when the development of a new sedan of the Samara family with the VAZ-21099 index began. The first prototype, released at the end of 1984, already bore the factory index VAZ-2110. It was a prototype of the so-called "Series 0", during its manufacture almost all parts were taken from the cars of the first "Samara" family (/ /). The prototype VAZ-2110 "zero series" strongly resembled the VAZ-21099, in its design there was only one left rear-view mirror and a single wiper.

The first prototypes of the future VAZ-2110

A year later, after further improvements and changes in the design, the so-called 100th series of the VAZ-2110 car was born, which was named "Afalina. After the hundredth series, the next and next came out in increments of one hundred, the more the series was marked with, the more it looked like a production car. With each new series, the car less and less resembled the original rear-wheel drive project, for example, in the 300 series project, it was already possible to easily recognize the top ten that went into mass production. It is worth noting that the aerodynamic refinement of the 300 series was carried out with the participation of Porsche.

The prototype, which was almost ready for serial production, was shown in 1992 to Russian President Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin during his visit to the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. This copy was recommended for serial production, however, due to the economic crisis, serial production was postponed, and only in June 1995 was the first pilot batch of VAZ-2110 cars produced, and full-fledged serial production was launched only for the next 1996.

Prototypes of the VAZ-2110 series 0, 100, 200 and 300

The serial car VAZ-2110 for its time (in the mid-90s at the time it was released) had a modern design, both exterior and interior and a spacious trunk with a volume of 480 liters. Throughout the entire production period, the appearance of the car practically did not change and in this form in Russia it was produced until 2007, after which the car was completely replaced by the new Lada Priora sedan.

The VAZ-2110 sedan was produced not only in Russia, but also in Egypt and Ukraine by the Bogdan corporation. The Ukrainian “ten” bore its own name “Bogdan” and was produced until 2014. During the production of the VAZ-2110, it had many modifications, these were models with both a carburetor and an injection engine, both 8 and 16-valve, both 4 and 2-door coupe and even sports modifications.

Design and construction

In the cars of the 10th family, new developments were laid in comparison with the previous models. So the parts that were most exposed to corrosion began to be made of galvanized metal; gas stops were used to hold the hood in the open position. An on-board control system, an immobilizer, and a system for capturing gasoline vapors appeared. The brake discs are steel ventilated. Some production cars were equipped with air conditioning.

The first production cars VAZ-2110 received a VAZ-21083 carburetor 8-valve engine with a volume of 1.5 liters and a power of 69 horsepower. At the same time, the maximum speed was 162 km / h, and the average fuel consumption was 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers. Even if we take into account the fact that the engines on the VAZ-2110 and VAZ-21099 cars were the same "ten" in terms of acceleration and speed dynamics showed a 12% higher result. This was due primarily to the reduced drag coefficient.

The carburetor engine was replaced by an injection engine. The new 8-valve injection engine with a volume of 1.5 liters remained the same, but the power increased to 79 horsepower, the maximum speed also increased, now it was 170 km / h. Later, 16-valve engine models were developed.

The exterior of the car was not as angular as that of the cars of the "Samara" family (which were called "chisel" for a reason), the body lines were smoother and more modern. The car received completely different optics, taillights, a different grille, completely different bumpers (both front and rear). In general, it was a completely different car, and it makes no sense to compare it with the "ninety-ninth", although the cars were developed in parallel.

The interior of the VAZ-2110 car was also completely different, a new panel and instrument panel, a new steering wheel, door cards and much more. The dashboard featured a speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge and engine temperature gauge. "Ten" was completed with anatomical seats with head restraints, which can be adjusted both in the angle of inclination and in length.

The story began back in 1983.
Then the engineers of the Togliatti Automobile Plant began developing a new car under the VAZ 2110 brand.
At first it was supposed to be a rear-wheel drive sedan, but some forces prevented this.

Then it was decided to create new car based on the VAZ 2108.
Development was in full swing and with great enthusiasm. A lot of technological innovations were introduced, a large number of parts and assemblies were redone.

And in the end (1987), this development was suspended, due to the fact that it poured into a lumpy sum and would be reflected in the price of the car.
We decided to start the project from scratch, and what we had developed during this time later turned into VAZ 21099.

Many parts have been tested in Germany, France and other European countries.

The fine-tuning of the VAZ 2110 was carried out jointly with German engineers at the Porcshe test site.

The release of the top ten was planned for 1992, but due to unrest in the country it was postponed until 1995.
The birthday of the dozens is June 27, 1995. On this day, the first VAZ 2110 rolled off the assembly line.

Serial production began in 1996.
By this time, the car was already morally obsolete - this is in comparison with the world auto industry.

But in comparison with Russian cars, it was a clear leader.

The following innovations were applied at the VAZ 2110:

Electronic engine management system
- on-board computer
- galvanized body parts
- new technology of body painting
- the ability to install power windows and power steering on the steering wheel

"Ten" was produced for 12 years, in 2007 the release was discontinued. It was replaced by a new model - Lada Priora.
Modifications of the VAZ 2110 in the hatchback and station wagon bodies were produced for some time.

At the moment, "ten" is produced from AvtoVAZ car sets, in the city of Cherkassy (Ukraine), and bears the name "Bogdan".

During the production of the VAZ 2110, many modifications were released, for example

VAZ 21106 is a "charged" version of the VAZ 2110 sedan, with an Opel engine with a capacity of 150 hp.
"People's" modification had a power of 136 hp.
And the hydraulic booster of the company "ZF" was installed. Also, at first, some Volkswagen parts were used, but they were eventually replaced by domestic counterparts.
