More about KIA

Founded in 1944 Kia company Motors is the oldest Korean automaker. Its name stands for “come out of Asia into the whole world.” Kia produced passenger and trucks under license from other manufacturers until 1986, when it began developing its own models in partnership with Ford and Mazda. During the crisis in the late 1990s, the company went through bankruptcy and found itself partially owned by another Korean auto corporation, Hyundai Motors Company. Subsequently, thanks to mutually beneficial cooperation, the two companies managed to gain a foothold in the automotive markets of Asia, Europe and North America, while constantly improving their product range.

In Russia, Kia cars have gained popularity among buyers due to their high reliability, as well as a favorable price/quality ratio. Kia Motors has launched the production of individual models at Russian production sites - from 2005 to 2011, the Kia Spectra was assembled at the IzhAvto plant, and since 2011, the third generation Rio has been produced at the corporation's own plant. In addition, several Kia models are assembled by Kaliningrad Avtotor using the large-unit assembly method.

Greetings my dear readers. The need to write this article arose because a good friend of mine, when he was undergoing scheduled maintenance, was filled with oil with an SAE viscosity, which is not entirely suitable for this car.

This article is primarily addressed to the owners of the popular Kia Rio car in Russia, and in it you will highlight a lot of necessary and interesting things on the topic: Kia Rio oil ( Kia Rio).
We all understand perfectly well that in order for our car to serve for a long time and make us happy, we need to pay special attention to the engine because it is the “heart” of the car.

The manufacturer for all generations, and there are three of them at the time of writing, indicates at least once a year or after 15,000 kilometers. This is not always correct. I think that you will agree with me, because the car has been running for quite a long time. Idling, this is especially true in winter when warming up. The engine runs, and the mileage on the odometer does not increase, although the oil also performs its functions while idling. You can calculate the replacement interval in several ways, but without going into unnecessary details, I will say this: I made a conclusion for myself and I recommend that you do the same, namely, tie the replacement interval to the average speed. The average driving speed can be easily found in the readings of your car’s trip computer.

So, when to change:

  • at an average speed of more than 50 km/h, you can stick to the 15,000 km mark.
  • at an average speed of about 30 km/h, the interval decreases to 10,000 km.
  • at an average speed of less than 20 km/h, replacement must be carried out more often, after 7000 km.

A little later I plan to write a separate article where I will talk in detail about replacement intervals motor oil.

Approval and classes of motor oils

When selecting a motor lubricant, you need to know which class is suitable for your engine. Because it is the class and tolerance, and not the manufacturer, that is decisive here. It is indicated in the technical documentation for your car.

As I wrote above, in our country three were sold generation Kia Rio. How more modern car, the more stringent the requirements for oil quality:

And I would also not add various additives. Improvements in engine performance are unlikely to be noticeable, and if they are, they will be short-lived.

Viscosity

A design feature of modern power units is the presence of very small gaps in piston group and in order to prevent so-called “dry” friction and remove heat from heated engine elements, low-viscosity oil is needed. Therefore, for new cars, the viscosity index recommended by the manufacturer is constantly decreasing from 40 to 30, and currently to 20. If an engine designed for motor oil with a viscosity of SAE 5W-20 is filled with 5W-40, the most loaded parts will begin to experience oil starvation, resulting in increased wear of elements.

Engines internal combustion, installed on Kia Rio from the Gamma line, have a lubrication system adapted for the use of engine oil with SAE viscosity 5W-20 And 5W-30. This is confirmed by the vehicle's instruction manual.

Oil fill volume

To the question of how much to fill, you, dear reader, will get the answer by looking at the table.

There is one caveat: when you wake up, don’t expect that it will pour out exactly as much as indicated in the table. It is not possible to completely drain it and approximately 5 to 10% will remain in the engine.

By following these simple rules, the Kia Rio will work for a long time and make you happy. You don’t need to listen to any advice, you just need to correctly calculate the mileage between changes and fill in the oil of the class recommended by the manufacturer, and also don’t forget to check the oil level.

I hope that the information received will be useful to you when operating your car. There is very interesting material about what kind of oil I filled when I owned cars

The need for using engine oil in all cars is the same - to ensure constant lubrication of rubbing parts, promptly removing heat and preventing frictional wear processes. However, different engines have different specifics of operation, which is reflected in the need to use oils of strictly defined classes and tolerances. In this article, the editors of Expertology, together with in-house experts, tried to understand the issues of which of the commercially available oils are the best for the Kia Rio - Korean car small class.

Factory requirements for engine oil for Kia Rio

The first and most important requirement for engine maintenance is a timely oil change after a certain mileage. For Kia Rio, the recommended interval is 10 thousand kilometers, but professionals recommend making a change upon reaching 80-90% of the service life (that is, every 8-9 thousand kilometers).

Among other things, you should understand that when choosing an oil, you need to focus not only on the name, but also on the quality class. At the present stage of production of Kia Rio, manufacturers require the use of oil in the lubrication system of a quality not lower than API SN and ILSAC GF-5 - these are optimal tolerances that guarantee long-term and stable operation of the engine throughout its entire service life.

The remaining characteristics specified in the car manual are as follows:

  1. recommended brand of motor oil – SHELL Helix;
  2. filling volume – from 3.30 to 3.49 liters;
  3. optimal operating temperatures for recommended viscosity classes are from -30 to +50 °C (the given values are typical for oils from 5W20 to 20W50);
  4. level, according to API classifications Service (American motor oil classification system) – from 4 and above.

The best synthetic oils for Kia Rio

As prescribed by the recommendations, the leader among synthetic oil becomes another product produced by SHELL. Helix Ultra Professional AM-L 5W-30 is a composition developed by using a special technology for the distillation of natural gas, without the content of impurity elements and the negative properties of petroleum products. The base base is supplemented by a whole package of active additives, an important role among which is given to detergent components. The emphasis on them is the main feature of the oil, the task of which is to impeccably maintain the cleanliness of the inside of the engine.

According to technical specifications SHELL Helix Ultra Professional AM-L 5W-30 works perfectly in low temperatures (freezes at -45 °C), due to which it ensures easier engine starting even in severe frosts. It has optimal viscosity indicators (69.02 mm 2 /sec at 40 °C) and thereby increases the efficiency of the engine, although not much (the increase in power is not higher than 1.7-2.1%). Fully compliant with API SN/SF standards and thus ideal for use in the Kia Rio.

Advantages

  • contributes to an increase in power in Kia Rio engines (1.7-2.1%);
  • withstands up to -45 °C;
  • has pronounced cleaning functions;
  • provides a reliable mechanism for lubrication of parts with the formation of a durable oil film.

Flaws

  • not detected.

The second contender for leadership in the ranking is low-viscosity synthetics with a predominance of mechanisms for reducing the harmfulness of exhaust gases and the function of cleaning the engine. Thanks to the fine and most complete purification of the composition from sulfur and phosphorus, the oil has an optimizing effect on the catalyst, thereby reducing the rate of its production and the release of harmful compounds into the atmosphere.

Among other things, the structure of TOTAL Quartz 9000 Future EcoB 5W-20 allows you to reduce fuel consumption by an average of 3.35% (ACEA M111FE test indicator), which gives a good economic effect when used over a long period of time. According to users, despite the reduced viscosity, the oil provides easier engine starting in cold periods, but signs of solidification begin to appear already at -30 ° C. In this regard, the effectiveness of its use is questionable, but not all regions of Russia are exposed to such severe frosts. Based on the totality of its positive features, it is a good alternative to the line of oils from SHELL, with comparable indicators of working life and market value.

Advantages

  • clear emphasis on environmental friendliness;
  • reduction in fuel consumption by more than 3% (compared to reference oil);
  • pronounced detergent-dispersant function (comprehensive protection against the formation of solid deposits);
  • The service life is comparable to oils from the SHELL line.

Flaws

We awarded the third line of the rating to the oil of the Castrol Magnatec line, created using CM Intelligent Molecules technology, which affects the synthetic composition at the molecular level. Ultimately, Professional E 5W-20 has a complex effect on the motor, expressed not only in lubricating, cleaning and cooling properties, but also in creating a dense modified film on the surface of metal parts that is resistant to thermochemical influences. This film provides engine protection at the most vulnerable moment of its operation - during startup, when the lubricant rests in the oil pan.

Despite decreased performance viscosity Castrol Magnatec Professional E 5W-20 performs well when working in cold conditions, freezing completely only at a temperature of -45 ° C. An excellent indicator that makes it easier to start the engine in cold weather. According to users, this composition perfectly withstands 10 thousand runs, giving, with moderate use of the car, the opportunity to drive another 1-2 thousand kilometers without loss useful properties. This is an excellent oil that has been successfully used in American and Korean-made cars (including Kia Rio).

Advantages

  • high stability of the composition when changing temperature;
  • Castrol Magnatec Inteligent Molecules core technology;
  • allows you to cover more than the calculated interval on one fill (without losing the properties of the cleaning and protective effect).

Flaws

  • high price per liter.

The fourth line of the rating goes to the traditionally high-quality product of the Liqui Moly company. Under other circumstances, it could have aspired to a higher place, but in comparison with its competitors, its manifestation is somewhat… standard. All performance characteristics were balanced, and the producers did not intend to place any obvious emphasis on anything. However, a couple of points can still be mentioned: for example, a very large reserve of working resource (about 12-13 thousand kilometers). Thanks to the expanded package of additives, the oil ages extremely slowly, is practically resistant to oxidation and is not wasted, which is a rather sore subject for the engines of the new Kia Rio.

Good viscosity parameters in Synthoil High Tech 5W-30 are interspersed with resistance to temperature changes, and starting the engine is quite easy in both cold and hot weather. Synthetics feel great in the cold, freezing only at -45 °C. In general, there is nothing more to say here: consumers are very satisfied with the operating process, in particular, the large working resource. As for the price parameters... let's conclude this: in terms of quality, it is quite adequate.

Advantages

  • extended replacement interval (12-13 thousand kilometers);
  • a very balanced composition that effectively solves the entire range of problems of motor oil;
  • optimal viscosity parameters (11.6 mm2/sec at 100 °C).

Flaws

  • high price, offset by the quality of the product.

The development of this synthetic was carried out taking into account the characteristics of Ford engines, by order of which, in fact, the entire development process was initiated. However, the end result turned out to be very versatile: Motul Specific 948B 5W20 began to be successfully used in both Jaguar engines and the line Land Rover, and in a number of budget small-class cars, which is our main model Kia Rio.

Unlike competitors in the rating, this synthetic is allowed to be mixed with other types of oils, including mineral ones (however, we still do not recommend doing this). The composition is distinguished by a high degree of purification from impurities (sulfate ash content does not exceed 0.78% of the total mass of the oil), an almost neutral alkaline number (pH 8), and also good resistance to work in cold weather. When heated to 150 °C, the HTHS viscosity of the oil, according to ASTM D4741 tests, is 2.6 mPa. The condition is very borderline, and if the temperature changes upward, there is a high probability of breaking the integrity of the oil film. Be that as it may, in normal condition Motul Specific 948B 5W20 works perfectly, and is a popular choice among owners of Kia Rio and cars of a similar class.

Advantages

  • high quality manufacturing;
  • the oil development process was authorized by Ford (special order);
  • fine cleaning composition from impurity elements;
  • optimal parameters for engine lubrication and cleaning.

Flaws

  • high price per liter.

Synthetic universal-purpose oil suitable for use in diesel and gasoline engines. It implements and includes many functions to ensure acceptable working conditions, which negatively (and these are the words of users) affects the size of the resource.

However, if you want to show off, and 8 thousand kilometers is an acceptable figure for you, then MOBIL 1 ESP 5W-30 is perfect. Tailored for difficult operating conditions (with catalysts, turbocharging and particulate filters) has a positive effect on power indicators (1.9% increase in power), and also contributes to small fuel savings (2.43%) due to reduced friction losses in components. Like Motul Specific, this oil boasts a high degree of purification: the proportion of sulfate ash in its mass does not exceed 0.8%, which protects the engine from residual sediment. Another strong point of MOBIL 1 ESP 5W-30 is its pour point. Loss of fluidity is observed at -48 °C, and this indicator is very good in Siberian conditions. The product has earned a number of rave reviews from owners of small cars, with minor complaints regarding the high price.

Advantages

  • enhanced formula developed for use in diesel and gasoline engines;
  • hardens at -48 °C;
  • high degree of purification from impurities (the share of sulfate ash is 0.8% by weight of the oil);
  • increase in power and efficiency due to reduced friction losses.

Flaws

  • less labor resource than competitors;
  • high price factor due to versatility.

The best semi-synthetic oils for Kia Rio

According to all the canons of recommendations from manufacturers, the semi-synthetic SHELL Helix HX7 5W-30, whose operating potential is estimated at 6 thousand kilometers, falls into the first step of the oil rating for the Kia Rio. It is perfect for working in used engines of older models, as it contains a mineral base, and will not become superfluous in new cars, the engines of which have not yet been affected by the destructive wear mechanism.

The temperature range of the theoretical operation of this “universal” product is limited to -48 and 244 °C, which is the point of complete freezing and flash point in an open crucible, respectively. In addition to approval from the Korean automaker, SHELL Helix HX7 5W-30 is recommended for use in Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz cars, and also meets the requirements of four specifications (including the API SN that interests us). This is very good oil, which is suitable for all connoisseurs of reliability, economy and does not overdo it with an aggressive driving style.

The semi-synthetic LIQUI MOLY Molygen New Generation 5W-20, based on HC synthesis technology, has stopped one step away from leadership (due to the lack of a manufacturer’s recommendation). In addition, the range of additives has been supplemented by a special development from Mlygen, aimed at improving methods for cleaning the engine from solid sediment compounds, corrosion and other pollutants.

Despite the fact that the pH value of the oil is at a neutral level (pH 7.2), the additive complex contains components that neutralize the effects of acids. The lubricating functions of Molygen New Generation 5W-20 help to significantly reduce the coefficient of friction between parts, increasing fuel economy and increasing power (unfortunately, specific research data on these points is not provided). The final point is the presence of 15 permits and approvals from automakers: American (Chrysler, General Motors, Ford), Japanese (Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, Subaru) and Korean (Hyundai, Kia).

Advantages

  • acceptable cost indicators;
  • high quality composition based on HC synthesis;
  • the additive package contains the Molygen component, which improves engine cleaning processes;
  • up to 6 thousand kilometers;
  • 15 tolerances and approvals from American and Asian manufacturers.

Flaws

  • not found.

It just so happened that Motul 6100 SAVE-lite 5W20 became the third representative of semi-synthetic oils suitable for use in engines Kia car Rio. The development of this composition was sanctioned by a number of American manufacturers, who, in fact, gave approval for its use in their cars (Chrysler, General Motors and Ford).

The prefix “SAVE” in the name of the oil indicates that it is designed to preserve the working life of the engine through timely cleaning of solid deposits and neutralization of aggressive environments and corrosion processes. Low temperature solidification of Motul 6100 SAVE-lite 5W20 does not make it possible to use the composition in severe frost conditions, but to some extent it still provides easier engine starting (up to about -20 ° C). Of course, it cannot be compared with its opponents, either in terms of the indirect indicator of the number of approvals and approvals, or in terms of technical characteristics. However, Rio owners fell in love with this oil. And popular assessment (opinion) often means much more than the notorious comparison indicators.

Advantages

  • a composition that provides an integrated approach to protecting the motor in order to preserve its working life;
  • high popularity among Kia Rio owners;
  • good oxidation stability and wear resistance;
  • the working resource is estimated at 6 thousand kilometers.

Flaws

  • narrow operating temperature range;
  • quite high price.

Attention! This rating is subjective in nature, does not constitute an advertisement and does not serve as a purchase guide. Before purchasing, consultation with a specialist is required.

If you are the owner of a 2011-2015 Kia Rio, then you are in luck - these models are equipped with very reliable and modern engines. However, it should be noted that without proper care, any motor will soon begin to fail and its capabilities will need to be forgotten.

One of the most important aspects in servicing power units on Kia Rio (including 2013 and 2014) is regular oil changes, and you can do this even more often than the manufacturer recommends. In our article we will look at what better oil fill in your car, what options are there and compare their pros and cons.

It is absolutely obvious that the oil must be changed regularly and in a timely manner. This is especially true for cars of 2011, 2012 and 2013, since they have been in operation for some time and the engine receives a serious load. The main indicator of an oil is its viscosity, which helps determine the degree of fluidity. By using the right oil, you can completely protect your engine from premature wear. For engines installed on Kia Rio, you need to use a product with a viscosity of 5W-30 or 5W-40. It is also advisable to always monitor the oil filter and change it at the same time as the oil, no matter what the condition.

Choosing engine oil

Before you run to the store and purchase a product from a specific company, you need to find out what characteristics the oil should have for use in the 2011-2015 Kia Rio. Taking these features into account, we have selected several suitable options that we will consider:

  • Shell Helix Ultra.
  • Total Quartz.
  • Divinol.
  • ZIC XQ LS.

The first option is one of best oils in terms of price-quality ratio. Analysis showed that this product has the required set of necessary substances and additives, and therefore its use for Kia motor Rio makes perfect sense. Moreover, Shell Helix Ultra oil does not lose its qualities for a long time and retains its protective properties, which is also a definite plus for this option.

Total Quartz also has impressive performance and is capable of keeping all engine components in excellent condition. The price of this product is small, but at the same time it works 100%. As with the previous option, the oil retains its characteristics even with fairly high mileage.

Divinol oil boasts low consumption. It should be noted that this brand is little known, but this does not affect its quality. Therefore, this option is perfect for your Kia Rio and will perform all its functions.

Another good product with affordable price is ZIC XQ LS. It has an impressive list of additives, and this directly affects the protection of the engine from wear. You can also safely pour it into the engine of your car.

It’s hard to say which oil is better, because they are all good. Of course, you can choose another oil, more expensive, but the options we presented are the most optimal for Kia Rio 2011-2015. The first replacement should be made after 3000 km, as this is enough to break in the engine. Subsequent replacements should be at least once every 10,000 km. In this case, you need to fill in approximately 3 liters of liquid, then check its level, and it should not be higher than the F mark.

Replacement process

You can change the oil either at a service station or do it yourself. The first option is much simpler, but it involves financial costs. If you don't want to pay, you can do everything yourself. To do this, you need to drive the car into the “pit” and unscrew the plug located on the engine pan. You need to be very careful here because the oil has high temperature and may harm you. When it has completely drained, you need to remove the filter.

After all these procedures have been completed, it is recommended to remove any remaining dirty oil from the pan. To do this, you can use a syringe with a curved tube on it. It should be noted that this is an optional procedure, but it certainly won’t be superfluous. Next, you need to pour fresh product into the Kia Rio engine and the car will not let you down.

Among other things, you will need to prepare the following tools and materials in advance:

  • 1. Rubber gloves.
  • 2. Newspapers and rags.
  • 3. Bucket (to drain old oil into).
  • 4. End wrench(to remove the plug from the pan).
  • 5. Open-end wrench (for removing the filter).

So, we tried to give some advice on which oil to choose for the Kia Rio. As you can see, doing this and replacing it is not difficult. The main thing is to clearly know what characteristics are necessary for your engine and purchase only high-quality and suitable oil. Whichever one you choose from our list, you can be sure of its reliability.

If you bought a car, then you probably dream of an engine that can serve your “iron friend” for as long as possible. Therefore use lubricant for the engine - the most important question that worries any car enthusiast.

The best engine oil for Kia Rio

Viscosity, which is the main and main indicator of motor oil, can determine the degree of its fluidity. For any car, changing the engine oil must be timely. Engine oil for the Kia Rio 2014 provides complete protection of almost all internal engine components.

Do not forget that in Kia Rio 2013, 2012, 2014, as in other models, it is worth replacing the lubricant and oil filter.

Engine oil for Kia Rio is selected based on the data contained in the vehicle’s operating instructions.

Lubricants for Kia Rio 2013, 2012, 2014 can be considered budget and affordable options.

Shell Helix Ultra

Shell Helix Ultra can be called a leader among oils that have shown excellent results.
The liquid contains an optimal set of additives, which allows the use of motor oil in aggressive environments.

Starting the engine showed that the lubricant retained the properties declared by the manufacturer, which makes it possible to protect the engine.

Total Quartz

It has an equally worthy composition. In addition, this is an oil that is ready to cope with fuel to such an extent that a high percentage of sulfur will not interfere with it. It can be praised for both quality and price.

High mileage cannot destroy the working properties of the lubricant.

Divinol

Divinol is an engine oil that offers the lowest consumption as well as excellent engine wear protection. The level of alkalinity and acidity also attracts attention.

One can, of course, complain about the not-so-good promotion of the brand, however, one can note the fact that owners of Rio 2013, 2012, 2014 are increasingly using the appropriate composition of this product.

ZIC XQ LS

LS is a product with a reasonable price and good quality. The oil has quite a considerable resource of additives and sufficient reliable protection from engine wear.
However, there is a fact that the substance is not approved.

How much to fill

In a new car, the first lubricant change is made after three thousand kilometers, since during this period the engine is run-in and run-in, as a result of which abrasive particles appear in it, which must be removed.

In the future, the lubricating fluid is replaced at intervals of every 10 thousand kilometers.

As a rule, during the procedure, approximately 3 liters of petroleum product are poured into the engine.

You should check the lubricant level, which should not exceed the “F” mark.

Replacement steps

Before you start changing the lubricant, you must be sure that you are using a lubricant product recommended by the Kia Rio manufacturer. Do not forget that along with the purchase of a lubricant you must purchase an oil filter, since using an old filter is not recommended!

For self-replacement It is convenient to use the inspection hole for lubricant. In its absence, jack up your Kia Rio.

What tools will you need?

  • When changing engine oil, use rubber gloves;
  • you will need a socket wrench, which is necessary in order to open the drain plug;
  • an open-end wrench is suitable for replacing the oil filter;
  • dirty lubricant must flow into some container, which can be a bucket or bottle;
  • stock up on newspapers and rags.

How to drain oil correctly

During such a procedure, care is important to avoid getting burned by hot oil.

  1. An automatic transmission requires the “Parking” mode to be set, and a manual transmission requires the handbrake to be engaged.
  2. The key will help you loosen the crankcase plug. The plug gasket should not stick to the pan. Installing a plug without a gasket risks that the working substance will gradually leak in the future.
  3. Next, you need to unscrew the engine sump plug, and then allow the used lubricating fluid to drain, for which you must place a container under the drain hole.
  4. Use a syringe to pump out any remaining dirty grease from the pan.

How to fill

As soon as the fluid has drained, unscrew the oil filter, pour fresh lubricant into the new one, and then tighten the filter.

If you cannot unscrew the old filter by hand, then it is better to do it using a special puller or other convenient and accessible way.

Lubricate the filter rubber with oil.

A new gasket for the pan plug is also needed.

After opening the hood of the car, pour 3 liters of lubricant into the engine through the neck, then start the car for a few seconds, and make sure that dashboard The oil can went out.

You can look under the car with the engine running and make sure that the substance is not leaking.
